Socrates. You have faith in the inspiration of Euthyphro, it seems.

Hermogenes. Evidently.

Socrates. And you are right in having it; for just at this very moment I think I have had a clever thought, and if I am not careful, before the day is over I am likely to be wiser than I ought to be. So pay attention. First we must remember in regard to names that we often put in or take out letters, making the names different from the meaning we intend, and we change the accent.
399b
Take, for instance, Διὶ φίλος; to change this from a phrase to a name, we took out the second iota and pronounced the middle syllable with the grave instead of the acute accent (Diphilus). In other instances, on the contrary, we insert letters and pronounce grave accents as acute.

Hermogenes. True.

Socrates. Now it appears to me that the name of men (ἄνθρωπος) underwent a change of that sort. It was a phrase, but became a noun when one letter, alpha, was removed and the accent of the last syllable was dropped.

Hermogenes. What do you mean?
399c

Socrates. I will tell you. The name man (ἄνθρωπος) indicates that the other animals do not examine, or consider, or look up at (ἀναθρεῖ) any of the things that they see, but man has no sooner seenthat is, ὄπωπεthan he looks up at and considers that which he has seen. Therefore of all the animals man alone is rightly called man (ἄνθρωπος), because he looks up at (ἀναθρεῖ) what he has seen (ὄπωπε).

Hermogenes. Of course. May I ask you about the next word I should like to have explained?

Socrates. Certainly.
399d

Hermogenes. It seems to me to come naturally next after those you have discussed. We speak of mans soul and body.

Socrates. Yes, of course.

Hermogenes. Let us try to analyze these, as we did the previous words.

Socrates. You mean consider soul (ψυχή) and see why it is properly called by that name, and likewise body (σῶμα)?

Hermogenes. Yes.

Socrates. To speak on the spur of the moment, I think those who gave the soul its name had something of this sort in mind: they thought when it was present in the body it was the cause of its living,
399e
giving it the power to breathe and reviving it (ἀναψῦχον), and when this revivifying force fails, the body perishes and comes to an end therefore, I think, they called it ψυχή. Butplease keep still a moment. I fancy I see something which will carry more conviction
400
400a
to Euthyphro and his followers; for I think they would despise this attempt and would consider it cheap talk. Now see if you like the new one.

Hermogenes. I am listening.

Socrates. Do you think there is anything which holds and carries the whole nature of the body, so that it lives and moves, except the soul?

Hermogenes. No; nothing.

Socrates. Well, and do you not believe the doctrine of Anaxagoras, that it is mind or soul which orders and holds the nature of all things?

Hermogenes. I do.
400b

Socrates. Then there would be an admirable fitness in calling that power which carries and holds (ἔχει) nature (φύσιν) φυσέχη and this may be refined and pronounced ψυχή.

Hermogenes. Certainly; and I think this is a more scientific explanation than the other.

Socrates. Yes, it is. But it seems actually absurd that the name was given with such truth.

Hermogenes. Now what shall we say about the next word?

Socrates. You mean body (σῶμα)?

Hermogenes. Yes.

Socrates. I think this admits of many explanations, if a little, even very little, change is made; for some say it is the tomb (σῆμα) of the soul,
400c
their notion being that the soul is buried in the present life; and again, because by its means the soul gives any signs which it gives, it is for this reason also properly called sign (σῆμα). But I think it most likely that the Orphic poets gave this name, with the idea that the soul is undergoing punishment for something; they think it has the body as an enclosure to keep it safe, like a prison, and this is, as the name itself denotes, the safe (σῶμα) for the soul, until the penalty is paid, and not even a letter needs to be changed.
400d

Hermogenes. I think, Socrates, enough has been said about these words; but might we not consider the names of the gods in the same way in which you were speaking about that of Zeus a few minutes ago, and see what kind of correctness there is in them?

Socrates. By Zeus, Hermogenes, we, if we are sensible, must recognize that there is one most excellent kind, since of the gods we know nothing, neither of them nor of their names, whatever they may be, by which they call themselves, for it is clear that they use the true names. But there is a second kind of correctness,
400e
that we call them, as is customary in prayers, by whatever names and patronymics are pleasing to them, since we know no other.
401
401a
Now I think that is an excellent custom.

Socrates. So, if you like, let us first make a kind of announcement to the gods, saying that we are not going to investigate about themfor we do not claim to be able to do thatbut about men, and let us inquire what thought men had in giving them their names; for in that there is no impiety.

Hermogenes. I think, Socrates, you are right; let us do as you say.
401b

Socrates. Shall we, then, begin with Hestia, according to custom?

Hermogenes. That is the proper thing.

Socrates. Then what would you say the man had in mind who gave Hestia her name?

Hermogenes. By Zeus, I think that is no more easy question than the other.

Socrates. At any rate, my dear Hermogenes, the first men who gave names were no ordinary persons, but high thinkers and great talkers.

Hermogenes. What then?

Socrates. I am sure the names were given by men of that kind; and if foreign names are examined,
401c
the meaning of each of them is equally evident. Take, for instance, that which we call οὐσία (reality, essence); some people call it ἐσσία, and still others ὠσία. First, then, in connection with the second of these forms, it is reasonable that the essence of things be called Hestia; and moreover, because we ourselves say of that which partakes of reality it is, (ἔστιν), the name Hestia would be correct in this connection also; for apparently we also called οὐσία (reality) ἐσσία in ancient times. And besides, if you consider it in connection with sacrifices,
401d
you would come to the conclusion that those who established them understood the name in that way; for those who called the essence of things ἐσσία would naturally sacrifice to Hestia first of all the gods. Those on the other hand, who say ὠσία would agree, well enough with Heracleitus that all things move and nothing remains still. So they would say the cause and ruler of things was the pushing power (ὠθοῦν), wherefore it had been rightly named ὠσία. But enough of this, considering that we know nothing.
401e
After Hestia it is right to consider Rhea and Cronus. The name of Cronus, however, has already been discussed. But perhaps I am talking nonsense.

Hermogenes. Why, Socrates?

Socrates. My friend, I have thought of a swarm of wisdom.

Hermogenes. What is it?

But 2 w 2559
it 19 w 2561
seems 3 w 2566
actually 1 w 2574
absurd 1 w 2580
that 12 w 2584
the 45 w 2587
name 8 w 2591
was 6 w 2594
given 1 w 2599
with 2 w 2603
such 1 w 2607
truth 1 w 2612
Hermogenes 12 w 2623
Now 3 w 2627
what 2 w 2631
shall 1 w 2636
we 12 w 2638
say 1 w 2641
about 2 w 2646
the 46 w 2649
next 3 w 2653
word 3 w 2657
Socrates 13 w 2666
You 3 w 2670
mean 4 w 2674
body 6 w 2678
σῶμα 2 w 2683
Hermogenes 13 w 2695
Yes 4 w 2699
Socrates 14 w 2708
I 20 w 2710
think 7 w 2715
this 8 w 2719
admits 1 w 2725
of 17 w 2727
many 1 w 2731
explanations 1 w 2743
if 6 w 2746
a 206 w 2747
little 1 w 2753
even 1 w 2758
very 2 w 2762
little 2 w 2768
change 4 w 2775
is 24 w 2777
made 1 w 2781
for 8 w 2785
some 3 w 2789
say 2 w 2792
it 24 w 2794
is 25 w 2796
the 47 w 2799
tomb 1 w 2803
σῆμα 1 w 2808
of 18 w 2811
the 48 w 2814
soul 6 w 2818
their 1 w 2824
notion 1 w 2830
being 1 w 2835
that 13 w 2839
the 50 w 2842
soul 7 w 2846
is 26 w 2848
buried 1 w 2854
in 46 w 2856
the 51 w 2859
present 2 w 2866
life 1 w 2870
and 23 w 2874
again 1 w 2879
because 2 w 2887
by 2 w 2889
its 4 w 2892
means 1 w 2897
the 52 w 2900
soul 8 w 2904
gives 1 w 2909
any 4 w 2912
signs 1 w 2917
which 6 w 2922
it 26 w 2924
gives 2 w 2929
it 27 w 2932
is 27 w 2934
for 9 w 2937
this 9 w 2941
reason 1 w 2947
also 1 w 2951
properly 2 w 2959
called 4 w 2965
sign 2 w 2969
σῆμα 2 w 2974
But 3 w 2979
I 21 w 2980
think 8 w 2985
it 28 w 2987
most 1 w 2991
likely 2 w 2997
that 14 w 3001
the 53 w 3004
Orphic 1 w 3010
poets 1 w 3015
gave 2 w 3019
this 10 w 3023
name 9 w 3027
with 3 w 3032
the 54 w 3035
idea 1 w 3039
that 15 w 3043
the 55 w 3046
soul 9 w 3050
is 30 w 3052
undergoing 1 w 3062
punishment 1 w 3072
for 10 w 3075
something 3 w 3084
they 5 w 3089
think 9 w 3094
it 30 w 3096
has 4 w 3099
the 57 w 3102
body 7 w 3106
as 20 w 3108
an 55 w 3110
enclosure 1 w 3119
to 16 w 3121
keep 2 w 3125
it 31 w 3127
safe 1 w 3131
like 6 w 3136
a 229 w 3137
prison 1 w 3143
and 24 w 3147
this 11 w 3151
is 34 w 3153
as 21 w 3156
the 58 w 3159
name 10 w 3163
itself 1 w 3169
denotes 1 w 3176
the 59 w 3180
safe 2 w 3184
σῶμα 3 w 3189
for 11 w 3193
the 60 w 3196
soul 10 w 3200
until 1 w 3206
the 61 w 3209
penalty 1 w 3216
is 35 w 3218
paid 1 w 3222
and 25 w 3226
not 7 w 3229
even 2 w 3233
a 237 w 3234
letter 4 w 3240
needs 1 w 3245
to 17 w 3247
be 12 w 3249
changed 1 w 3256
Hermogenes 14 w 3267
I 22 w 3269
think 10 w 3274
Socrates 15 w 3283
enough 1 w 3290
has 5 w 3293
been 1 w 3297
said 1 w 3301
about 3 w 3306
these 2 w 3311
words 2 w 3316
but 3 w 3320
might 1 w 3325
we 13 w 3327
not 8 w 3330
consider 5 w 3338
the 63 w 3341
names 3 w 3346
of 19 w 3348
the 64 w 3351
gods 1 w 3355
in 53 w 3357
the 65 w 3360
same 1 w 3364
way 1 w 3367
in 54 w 3369
which 7 w 3374
you 9 w 3377
were 1 w 3381
speaking 1 w 3389
about 4 w 3394
that 16 w 3398
of 20 w 3400
Zeus 1 w 3404
a 249 w 3405
few 1 w 3408
minutes 1 w 3415
ago 2 w 3418
and 26 w 3422
see 11 w 3425
what 3 w 3429
kind 1 w 3433
of 21 w 3435
correctness 1 w 3446
there 4 w 3451
is 36 w 3453
in 58 w 3455
them 1 w 3459
Socrates 16 w 3468
By 1 w 3471
Zeus 2 w 3475
Hermogenes 15 w 3486
we 15 w 3489
if 8 w 3492
we 16 w 3494
are 3 w 3497
sensible 1 w 3505
must 2 w 3510
recognize 1 w 3519
that 17 w 3523
there 5 w 3528
is 37 w 3530
one 5 w 3533
most 2 w 3537
excellent 1 w 3546
kind 2 w 3550
since 1 w 3556
of 22 w 3558
the 69 w 3561
gods 2 w 3565
we 17 w 3567
know 1 w 3571
nothing 2 w 3578
neither 1 w 3586
of 23 w 3588
them 2 w 3592
nor 1 w 3595
of 24 w 3597
their 2 w 3602
names 4 w 3607
whatever 1 w 3616
they 6 w 3620
may 2 w 3623
be 14 w 3625
by 3 w 3628
which 8 w 3633
they 7 w 3637
call 6 w 3641
themselves 1 w 3651
for 12 w 3655
it 34 w 3657
is 38 w 3659
clear 1 w 3664
that 18 w 3668
they 8 w 3672
use 4 w 3675
the 77 w 3678
true 1 w 3682
names 5 w 3687
But 4 w 3691
there 6 w 3696
is 39 w 3698
a 263 w 3699
second 2 w 3705
kind 3 w 3709
of 25 w 3711
correctness 2 w 3722
that 19 w 3727
we 18 w 3729
call 7 w 3733
them 4 w 3737
as 23 w 3740
is 40 w 3742
customary 1 w 3751
in 63 w 3753
prayers 1 w 3760
by 4 w 3763
whatever 2 w 3771
names 6 w 3776
and 27 w 3779
patronymics 1 w 3790
are 4 w 3793
pleasing 1 w 3801
to 19 w 3803
them 5 w 3807
since 2 w 3813
we 19 w 3815
know 2 w 3819
no 19 w 3821
other 4 w 3826
Now 4 w 3830
I 23 w 3831
think 11 w 3836
that 20 w 3840
is 41 w 3842
an 61 w 3844
excellent 2 w 3853
custom 2 w 3859
Socrates 17 w 3868
So 19 w 3871
if 9 w 3874
you 10 w 3877
like 7 w 3881
let 5 w 3885
us 16 w 3887
first 1 w 3892
make 1 w 3896
a 279 w 3897
kind 4 w 3901
of 26 w 3903
announcement 1 w 3915
to 21 w 3917
the 82 w 3920
gods 3 w 3924
saying 1 w 3931
that 21 w 3935
we 20 w 3937
are 5 w 3940
not 10 w 3943
going 2 w 3948
to 22 w 3950
investigate 1 w 3961
about 5 w 3966
them 6 w 3970
for 13 w 3974
we 21 w 3976
do 6 w 3978
not 11 w 3981
claim 1 w 3986
to 23 w 3988
be 15 w 3990
able 4 w 3994
to 24 w 3996
do 7 w 3998
that 22 w 4002
but 4 w 4006
about 6 w 4011
men 7 w 4014
and 28 w 4018
let 6 w 4021
us 17 w 4023
inquire 1 w 4030
what 6 w 4034
thought 3 w 4041
men 8 w 4044
had 3 w 4047
in 72 w 4049
giving 2 w 4055
them 7 w 4059
their 3 w 4064
names 7 w 4069
for 14 w 4073
in 74 w 4075
that 23 w 4079
there 7 w 4084
is 42 w 4086
no 23 w 4088
impiety 1 w 4095
Hermogenes 16 w 4106
I 24 w 4108
think 12 w 4113
Socrates 18 w 4122
you 11 w 4126
are 6 w 4129
right 3 w 4134
let 7 w 4138
us 18 w 4140
do 8 w 4142
as 25 w 4144
you 12 w 4147
say 4 w 4150
Socrates 19 w 4159
Shall 1 w 4165
we 22 w 4167
then 1 w 4172
begin 1 w 4178
with 4 w 4182
Hestia 1 w 4188
according 1 w 4198
to 25 w 4200
custom 3 w 4206
Hermogenes 17 w 4217
That 1 w 4222
is 43 w 4224
the 88 w 4227
proper 3 w 4233
thing 9 w 4238
Socrates 20 w 4247
Then 2 w 4252
what 7 w 4256
would 4 w 4261
you 13 w 4264
say 5 w 4267
the 89 w 4270
man 7 w 4273
had 4 w 4276
in 79 w 4278
mind 3 w 4282
who 3 w 4285
gave 3 w 4289
Hestia 2 w 4295
her 14 w 4298
name 16 w 4302
Hermogenes 18 w 4313
By 2 w 4316
Zeus 3 w 4320
I 25 w 4322
think 13 w 4327
that 24 w 4331
is 44 w 4333
no 24 w 4335
more 3 w 4339
easy 1 w 4343
question 1 w 4351
than 4 w 4355
the 90 w 4358
other 5 w 4363
Socrates 21 w 4372
At 1 w 4375
any 5 w 4378
rate 22 w 4382
my 1 w 4385
dear 1 w 4389
Hermogenes 19 w 4399
the 92 w 4403
first 2 w 4408
men 9 w 4411
who 4 w 4414
gave 4 w 4418
names 8 w 4423
were 2 w 4427
no 25 w 4429
ordinary 1 w 4437
persons 1 w 4444
but 5 w 4448
high 1 w 4452
thinkers 1 w 4460
and 29 w 4463
great 1 w 4468
talkers 1 w 4475
Hermogenes 20 w 4486
What 2 w 4491
then 2 w 4495
Socrates 22 w 4504
I 26 w 4506
am 24 w 4508
sure 2 w 4512
the 94 w 4515
names 9 w 4520
were 3 w 4524
given 2 w 4529
by 5 w 4531
men 10 w 4534
of 27 w 4536
that 25 w 4540
kind 5 w 4544
and 30 w 4548
if 10 w 4550
foreign 1 w 4557
names 10 w 4562
are 7 w 4565
examined 1 w 4573
the 95 w 4577
meaning 2 w 4584
of 28 w 4586
each 1 w 4590
of 29 w 4592
them 8 w 4596
is 45 w 4598
equally 1 w 4605
evident 1 w 4612
Take 2 w 4617
for 16 w 4621
instance 3 w 4629
that 26 w 4634
which 9 w 4639
we 25 w 4641
call 8 w 4645
οὐσία 1 w 4650
reality 1 w 4658
essence 1 w 4666
some 5 w 4672
people 1 w 4678
call 9 w 4682
it 37 w 4684
ἐσσία 1 w 4689
and 31 w 4693
still 2 w 4698
others 1 w 4704
ὠσία 1 w 4708
First 2 w 4714
then 3 w 4719
in 88 w 4722
connection 1 w 4732
with 5 w 4736
the 99 w 4739
second 3 w 4745
of 30 w 4747
these 3 w 4752
forms 1 w 4757
it 39 w 4760
is 46 w 4762
reasonable 1 w 4772
that 27 w 4776
the 101 w 4779
essence 2 w 4786
of 31 w 4788
things 3 w 4794
be 17 w 4796
called 5 w 4802
Hestia 3 w 4808
and 32 w 4812
moreover 1 w 4820
because 3 w 4828
we 26 w 4830
ourselves 1 w 4839
say 6 w 4842
of 32 w 4844
that 28 w 4848
which 10 w 4853
partakes 1 w 4861
of 33 w 4863
reality 2 w 4870
it 41 w 4872
is 47 w 4874
ἔστιν 1 w 4881
the 102 w 4886
name 20 w 4890
Hestia 4 w 4896
would 5 w 4901
be 19 w 4903
correct 3 w 4910
in 90 w 4912
this 12 w 4916
connection 2 w 4926
also 2 w 4930
for 18 w 4934
apparently 1 w 4944
we 27 w 4946
also 3 w 4950
called 6 w 4956
οὐσία 2 w 4961
reality 3 w 4969
ἐσσία 2 w 4975
in 91 w 4977
ancient 1 w 4984
times 1 w 4989
And 2 w 4993
besides 1 w 5000
if 11 w 5003
you 14 w 5006
consider 6 w 5014
it 43 w 5016
in 92 w 5018
connection 3 w 5028
with 6 w 5032
sacrifices 1 w 5042
you 15 w 5046
would 6 w 5051
come 3 w 5055
to 27 w 5057
the 103 w 5060
conclusion 1 w 5070
that 29 w 5074
those 3 w 5079
who 5 w 5082
established 1 w 5093
them 9 w 5097
understood 1 w 5107
the 105 w 5110
name 21 w 5114
in 93 w 5116
that 30 w 5120
way 2 w 5123
for 19 w 5127
those 4 w 5132
who 6 w 5135
called 7 w 5141
the 106 w 5144
essence 3 w 5151
of 34 w 5153
things 4 w 5159
ἐσσία 3 w 5164
would 7 w 5169
naturally 2 w 5178
sacrifice 2 w 5187
to 29 w 5189
Hestia 5 w 5195
first 3 w 5200
of 35 w 5202
all 21 w 5205
the 107 w 5208
gods 4 w 5212
Those 1 w 5218
on 42 w 5220
the 108 w 5223
other 7 w 5228
hand 1 w 5232
who 7 w 5236
say 7 w 5239
ὠσία 2 w 5243
would 8 w 5248
agree 1 w 5253
well 1 w 5258
enough 2 w 5264
with 7 w 5268
Heracleitus 1 w 5279
that 31 w 5283
all 22 w 5286
things 5 w 5292
move 3 w 5296
and 34 w 5299
nothing 3 w 5306
remains 1 w 5313
still 3 w 5318
So 25 w 5321
they 9 w 5325
would 9 w 5330
say 8 w 5333
the 111 w 5336
cause 5 w 5341
and 35 w 5344
ruler 1 w 5349
of 36 w 5351
things 6 w 5357
was 7 w 5360
the 112 w 5363
pushing 1 w 5370
power 3 w 5375
ὠθοῦν 1 w 5381
wherefore 1 w 5392
it 47 w 5394
had 5 w 5397
been 2 w 5401
rightly 2 w 5408
named 1 w 5413
ὠσία 3 w 5417
But 5 w 5421
enough 3 w 5427
of 37 w 5429
this 13 w 5433
considering 1 w 5445
that 32 w 5449
we 30 w 5451
know 3 w 5455
nothing 4 w 5462
After 1 w 5468
Hestia 6 w 5474
it 48 w 5476
is 51 w 5478
right 5 w 5483
to 30 w 5485
consider 8 w 5493
Rhea 1 w 5497
and 36 w 5500
Cronus 1 w 5506
The 5 w 5510
name 23 w 5514
of 38 w 5516
Cronus 2 w 5522
however 1 w 5530
has 6 w 5534
already 1 w 5541
been 3 w 5545
discussed 2 w 5554
But 6 w 5558
perhaps 1 w 5565
I 27 w 5566
am 32 w 5568
talking 1 w 5575
nonsense 1 w 5583
Hermogenes 21 w 5594
Why 1 w 5598
Socrates 23 w 5607
Socrates 24 w 5616
My 1 w 5619
friend 1 w 5625
I 28 w 5627
have 5 w 5631
thought 4 w 5638
of 39 w 5640
a 405 w 5641
swarm 1 w 5646
of 40 w 5648
wisdom 1 w 5654
Hermogenes 22 w 5665
What 3 w 5670
is 54 w 5672
it 49 w 5674
