402a

Socrates. It sounds absurd, but I think there is some probability in it.

Hermogenes. What is this probability?

Socrates. I seem to have a vision of Heracleitus saying some ancient words of wisdom as old as the reign of Cronus and Rhea, which Homer said too.

Hermogenes. What do you mean by that?

Socrates. Heracleitus says, you know, that all things move and nothing remains still, and he likens the universe to the current of a river, saying that you cannot step twice into the same stream.

Hermogenes. True.
402b

Socrates. Well, dont you think he who gave to the ancestors of the other gods the names Rhea and Cronus had the same thought as Heracleitus? Do you think he gave both of them the names of streams merely by chance? Just so Homer, too, says
Ocean the origin of the gods, and their mother Tethys;
Hom. Il. 14.201, 302 and I believe Hesiod says that also. Orpheus, too, says
Fair-flowing Ocean was the first to marry,
402c
and he wedded his sister Tethys, daughter of his mother.
Orpheus FrSee how they agree with each other and all tend towards the doctrine of Heracleitus.

Hermogenes. I think there is something in what you say, Socrates; but I do not know what the name of Tethys means.

Socrates. Why, the name itself almost tells that it is the name of a spring somewhat disguised; for that which is strained (διαττώμενον)
402d
and filtered (ἠθούμενον) represents a spring, and the name Tethys is compounded of those two words.

Hermogenes. That is very neat, Socrates.

Socrates. Of course it is. But what comes next? Zeus we discussed before.

Hermogenes. Yes.

Socrates. Let us, then, speak of his brothers, Poseidon and Pluto, including also the other name of the latter.

Hermogenes. By all means.

Socrates. I think Poseidons name was given by him who first applied it,
402e
because the power the sea restrained him as he was walking and hindered his advance; it acted as a bond (δεσμός) of his feet (ποδῶν). So he called the lord of this power Poseidon, regarding him as a foot-bond (ποσί-δεσμον). The e is inserted perhaps for euphony.

Socrates. But possibly that may not be right; possibly two lambdas were originally pronounced instead of the sigma, because the god knew (εἰδότος) many (πολλά) things.
403
403a
Or it may be that from his shaking he was called the Shaker ( σείων), and the pi and delta are additions. As for Pluto, he was so named as the giver of wealth (πλοῦτος), because wealth comes up from below out of the earth. And HadesI fancy most people think that this is a name of the Invisible (ἀειδής), so they are afraid and call him Pluto.
403b

Hermogenes. And what do you think yourself, Socrates?

Socrates. I think people have many false notions about the power of this god, and are unduly afraid of him. They are afraid because when we are once dead we remain in his realm for ever, and they are also terrified because the soul goes to him without the covering of the body. But I think all these facts, and the office and the name of the god, point in the same direction.

Hermogenes. How so?
403c

Socrates. I will tell you my own view. Please answer this question: Which is the stronger bond upon any living being to keep him in any one place, desire, or compulsion?

Hermogenes. Desire, Socrates, is much stronger.

Socrates. Then do you not believe there would be many fugitives from Hades, if he did not bind with the strongest bond those who go to him there?

Hermogenes. Of course there would.

Socrates. Apparently, then, if he binds them with the strongest bond, he binds them by some kind of desire, not by compulsion.

Hermogenes. Yes, that is plain.

Socrates. There are many desires, are there not?

Hermogenes. Yes.
403d

Socrates. Then he binds with the desire which is the strongest of all, if he is to restrain them with the strongest bond.

Hermogenes. Yes.

Socrates. And is there any desire stronger than the thought of being made a better man by association with some one?

Hermogenes. No, by Zeus, Socrates, there certainly is not.

Socrates. Then, Hermogenes, we must believe that this is the reason why no one has been willing to come away from that other world, not even the Sirens, but they and all others have been overcome by his enchantments,
403e
so beautiful, as it appears, are the words which Hades has the power to speak; and from this point of view this god is a perfect sophist and a great benefactor of those in his realm, he who also bestows such great blessings upon us who are on earth; such abundance surrounds him there below, and for this reason he is called Pluto.

Socrates. Then, too, he refuses to consort with men while they have bodies, but only accepts their society
404
404a
when the soul is pure of all the evils and desires of the body. Do you not think this shows him to be a philosopher and to understand perfectly that under these conditions he could restrain them by binding them with the desire of virtue, but that so long as they are infected with the unrest and madness of the body, not even his father Cronus could hold them to himself, though he bound them with his famous chains?

Hermogenes. There seems to be something in that, Socrates.
404b

Socrates. And the name Hades is not in the least derived from the invisible (ἀειδές), but far more probably from knowing (εἰδέναι) all noble things, and for that reason he was called Hades by the lawgiver.

Hermogenes. Very well; what shall we say of Demeter, Hera, Apollo, Athena, Hephaestus, Ares, and the other gods

Socrates. Demeter appears to have been called Demeter, because like a mother (μήτηρ) she gives the gift of food,
404c
and Hera is a lovely one (ἐρατή), as indeed, Zeus is said to have married her for love. But perhaps the lawgiver had natural phenomena in mind, and called her Hera (Ἥρα) as a disguise for ἀήρ (air), putting the beginning at the end. You would understand, if you were to repeat the name Hera over and over. And Pherephatta!—How many people fear this name, and also Apollo! I imagine it is because they do not know about correctness of names. You see they change the name to Phersephone and its aspect frightens them. But really the name indicates that the goddess is wise;
404d
for since things are in motion (φερόμενα), that which grasps (ἐφαπτόμενον) and touches (ἐπαφῶν) and is able to follow them is wisdom. Pherepapha, or something of that sort, would therefore be the correct name of the goddess, because she is wise and touches that which is in motion (ἐπαφὴ τοῦ φερομένου)—and this is the reason why Hades, who is wise, consorts with her, because she is wisebut people have altered her name, attaching more importance to euphony than to truth, and they call her Pherephatta. Likewise in the case of Apollo,
404e
as I say, many people are afraid because of the name of the god, thinking that it has some terrible meaning. Have you not noticed that?

Hermogenes. Certainly; what you say is true.

Socrates. But really the name is admirably appropriate to the power of the god.

Hermogenes. How is that?

Socrates 16 w 2655
Then 1 w 2660
do 10 w 2662
you 10 w 2665
not 6 w 2668
believe 2 w 2675
there 3 w 2680
would 1 w 2685
be 13 w 2687
many 3 w 2691
fugitives 1 w 2700
from 3 w 2704
Hades 2 w 2709
if 2 w 2712
he 71 w 2714
did 1 w 2717
not 7 w 2720
bind 1 w 2724
with 3 w 2728
the 55 w 2731
strongest 1 w 2740

those 2 w 2749

go 7 w 2754
to 16 w 2756
him 8 w 2759
there 4 w 2764
Hermogenes 11 w 2775
Of 2 w 2778
course 2 w 2784
there 5 w 2789
would 2 w 2794
Socrates 17 w 2803
Apparently 1 w 2814
then 2 w 2819
if 3 w 2822
he 76 w 2824
binds 1 w 2829
them 2 w 2833
with 4 w 2837
the 60 w 2840

he 79 w 2856
binds 2 w 2861
them 3 w 2865
by 4 w 2867
some 5 w 2871
kind 1 w 2875
of 27 w 2877
desire 2 w 2883
not 8 w 2887
by 5 w 2889
compulsion 2 w 2899
Hermogenes 12 w 2910
Yes 2 w 2914
that 10 w 2919
is 32 w 2921
plain 1 w 2926
Socrates 18 w 2935
There 1 w 2941
are 8 w 2944
many 4 w 2948
desires 1 w 2955
are 9 w 2959
there 6 w 2964
not 9 w 2967
Hermogenes 13 w 2978
Yes 3 w 2982
Socrates 19 w 2991
Then 2 w 2996
he 84 w 2998
binds 3 w 3003
with 5 w 3007
the 63 w 3010
desire 4 w 3016
which 3 w 3021
is 33 w 3023
the 64 w 3026
strongest 3 w 3035
of 28 w 3037
all 9 w 3040
if 4 w 3043
he 87 w 3045
is 34 w 3047
to 17 w 3049
restrain 2 w 3057
them 4 w 3061
with 6 w 3065
the 66 w 3068
strongest 4 w 3077
bond 6 w 3081
Hermogenes 14 w 3092
Yes 4 w 3096
Socrates 20 w 3105
And 3 w 3109
is 35 w 3111
there 7 w 3116
any 7 w 3119
desire 5 w 3125
stronger 3 w 3133
than 1 w 3137
the 68 w 3140
thought 2 w 3147
of 29 w 3149
being 2 w 3154
made 1 w 3158
a 213 w 3159
better 1 w 3165
man 5 w 3168
by 6 w 3170
association 1 w 3181
with 7 w 3185
some 6 w 3189
one 2 w 3192
Hermogenes 15 w 3203
No 1 w 3206
by 7 w 3209
Zeus 2 w 3213
Socrates 21 w 3222
there 8 w 3228
certainly 1 w 3237
is 36 w 3239
not 10 w 3242
Socrates 22 w 3251
Then 3 w 3256
Hermogenes 16 w 3267
we 12 w 3270
must 1 w 3274
believe 3 w 3281
that 11 w 3285
this 6 w 3289
is 38 w 3291
the 70 w 3294
reason 1 w 3300
why 1 w 3303
no 14 w 3305
one 3 w 3308
has 1 w 3311
been 1 w 3315
willing 1 w 3322
to 18 w 3324
come 3 w 3328
away 1 w 3332
from 4 w 3336
that 12 w 3340
other 7 w 3345
world 1 w 3350
not 11 w 3354
even 1 w 3358
the 72 w 3361
Sirens 1 w 3367
but 3 w 3371
they 4 w 3375
and 20 w 3378
all 10 w 3381
others 2 w 3387
have 3 w 3391
been 2 w 3395
overcome 1 w 3403
by 8 w 3405
his 14 w 3408
enchantments 1 w 3420
so 18 w 3423
beautiful 1 w 3432
as 18 w 3435
it 23 w 3437
appears 1 w 3444
are 10 w 3448
the 75 w 3451
words 3 w 3456
which 4 w 3461
Hades 3 w 3466
has 2 w 3469
the 76 w 3472
power 4 w 3477
to 19 w 3479
speak 2 w 3484
and 21 w 3488
from 5 w 3492
this 7 w 3496
point 2 w 3501
of 30 w 3503
view 2 w 3507
this 8 w 3511
god 6 w 3514
is 42 w 3516
a 239 w 3517
perfect 1 w 3524
sophist 1 w 3531
and 22 w 3534
a 241 w 3535
great 1 w 3540
benefactor 1 w 3550
of 31 w 3552
those 3 w 3557
in 55 w 3559
his 18 w 3562
realm 2 w 3567
he 101 w 3570
who 4 w 3573
also 4 w 3577
bestows 1 w 3584
such 1 w 3588
great 2 w 3593
blessings 1 w 3602
upon 2 w 3606
us 20 w 3608
who 5 w 3611
are 11 w 3614
on 37 w 3616
earth 2 w 3621
such 2 w 3626
abundance 1 w 3635
surrounds 1 w 3644
him 9 w 3647
there 9 w 3652
below 2 w 3657
and 23 w 3661
for 6 w 3664
this 9 w 3668
reason 2 w 3674
he 103 w 3676
is 46 w 3678
called 3 w 3684
Pluto 4 w 3689
Socrates 23 w 3698
Then 4 w 3703
too 4 w 3707
he 105 w 3710
refuses 1 w 3717
to 24 w 3719
consort 1 w 3726
with 8 w 3730
men 2 w 3733
while 1 w 3738
they 5 w 3742
have 4 w 3746
bodies 1 w 3752
but 4 w 3756
only 1 w 3760
accepts 1 w 3767
their 2 w 3772
society 1 w 3779
when 2 w 3783
the 80 w 3786
soul 2 w 3790
is 47 w 3792
pure 1 w 3796
of 32 w 3798
all 12 w 3801
the 81 w 3804
evils 1 w 3809
and 24 w 3812
desires 2 w 3819
of 33 w 3821
the 82 w 3824
body 2 w 3828
Do 2 w 3831
you 11 w 3834
not 12 w 3837
think 10 w 3842
this 10 w 3846
shows 1 w 3851
him 10 w 3854
to 25 w 3856
be 23 w 3858
a 259 w 3859
philosopher 1 w 3870
and 25 w 3873
to 26 w 3875
understand 1 w 3885
perfectly 1 w 3894
that 13 w 3898
under 2 w 3903
these 2 w 3908
conditions 1 w 3918
he 114 w 3920
could 1 w 3925
restrain 3 w 3933
them 5 w 3937
by 9 w 3939
binding 1 w 3946
them 6 w 3950
with 9 w 3954
the 86 w 3957
desire 7 w 3963
of 34 w 3965
virtue 1 w 3971
but 5 w 3975
that 14 w 3979
so 26 w 3981
long 1 w 3985
as 21 w 3987
they 6 w 3991
are 12 w 3994
infected 1 w 4002
with 10 w 4006
the 88 w 4009
unrest 1 w 4015
and 27 w 4018
madness 1 w 4025
of 35 w 4027
the 89 w 4030
body 3 w 4034
not 13 w 4038
even 2 w 4042
his 21 w 4045
father 1 w 4051
Cronus 3 w 4057
could 2 w 4062
hold 1 w 4066
them 7 w 4070
to 27 w 4072
himself 1 w 4079
though 3 w 4086
he 123 w 4088
bound 1 w 4093
them 8 w 4097
with 11 w 4101
his 22 w 4104
famous 1 w 4110
chains 1 w 4116
Hermogenes 17 w 4127
There 2 w 4133
seems 1 w 4138
to 28 w 4140
be 24 w 4142
something 2 w 4151
in 64 w 4153
that 15 w 4157
Socrates 24 w 4166
Socrates 25 w 4175
And 4 w 4179
the 93 w 4182
name 12 w 4186
Hades 4 w 4191
is 51 w 4193
not 14 w 4196
in 65 w 4198
the 94 w 4201
least 1 w 4206
derived 1 w 4213
from 6 w 4217
the 95 w 4220
invisible 1 w 4229
ἀειδές 1 w 4236
but 6 w 4241
far 1 w 4244
more 1 w 4248
probably 1 w 4256
from 7 w 4260
knowing 1 w 4267
εἰδέναι 1 w 4275
all 13 w 4279
noble 1 w 4284
things 3 w 4290
and 28 w 4294
for 7 w 4297
that 16 w 4301
reason 3 w 4307
he 129 w 4309
was 6 w 4312
called 4 w 4318
Hades 5 w 4323
by 10 w 4325
the 96 w 4328
lawgiver 1 w 4336
Hermogenes 18 w 4347
Very 1 w 4352
well 1 w 4356
what 6 w 4361
shall 1 w 4366
we 15 w 4368
say 8 w 4371
of 36 w 4373
Demeter 1 w 4380
Hera 5 w 4385
Apollo 1 w 4392
Athena 1 w 4399
Hephaestus 1 w 4410
Ares 1 w 4415
and 29 w 4419
the 98 w 4422
other 9 w 4427
gods 3 w 4431
Socrates 26 w 4439
Demeter 2 w 4447
appears 2 w 4454
to 29 w 4456
have 5 w 4460
been 3 w 4464
called 5 w 4470
Demeter 3 w 4477
because 6 w 4485
like 2 w 4489
a 301 w 4490
mother 3 w 4496
μήτηρ 1 w 4502
she 1 w 4506
gives 1 w 4511
the 101 w 4514
gift 1 w 4518
of 37 w 4520
food 1 w 4524
and 30 w 4528
Hera 6 w 4532
is 53 w 4534
a 304 w 4535
lovely 1 w 4541
one 4 w 4544
ἐρατή 1 w 4550
as 25 w 4554
indeed 1 w 4560
Zeus 3 w 4565
is 54 w 4567
said 2 w 4571
to 30 w 4573
have 6 w 4577
married 1 w 4584
her 24 w 4587
for 8 w 4590
love 2 w 4594
But 4 w 4598
perhaps 2 w 4605
the 102 w 4608
lawgiver 2 w 4616
had 2 w 4619
natural 1 w 4626
phenomena 1 w 4635
in 70 w 4637
mind 1 w 4641
and 31 w 4645
called 6 w 4651
her 25 w 4654
Hera 7 w 4658
Ἥρα 1 w 4662
as 26 w 4665
a 319 w 4666
disguise 2 w 4674
for 9 w 4677
ἀήρ 1 w 4680
air 2 w 4684
putting 1 w 4693
the 103 w 4696
beginning 1 w 4705
at 59 w 4707
the 104 w 4710
end 2 w 4713
You 1 w 4717
would 3 w 4722
understand 2 w 4732
if 7 w 4735
you 12 w 4738
were 2 w 4742
to 31 w 4744
repeat 1 w 4750
the 105 w 4753
name 13 w 4757
Hera 8 w 4761
over 3 w 4765
and 33 w 4768
over 4 w 4772
And 5 w 4776
Pherephatta 1 w 4787
How 2 w 4792
many 5 w 4796
people 3 w 4802
fear 1 w 4806
this 11 w 4810
name 14 w 4814
and 34 w 4818
also 5 w 4822
Apollo 2 w 4828
I 14 w 4830
imagine 1 w 4837
it 29 w 4839
is 58 w 4841
because 7 w 4848
they 7 w 4852
do 11 w 4854
not 15 w 4857
know 4 w 4861
about 2 w 4866
correctness 1 w 4877
of 38 w 4879
names 3 w 4884
You 2 w 4888
see 3 w 4891
they 8 w 4895
change 1 w 4901
the 108 w 4904
name 16 w 4908
to 32 w 4910
Phersephone 1 w 4921
and 35 w 4924
its 2 w 4927
aspect 1 w 4933
frightens 1 w 4942
them 9 w 4946
But 5 w 4950
really 1 w 4956
the 110 w 4959
name 17 w 4963
indicates 1 w 4972
that 17 w 4976
the 111 w 4979
goddess 1 w 4986
is 59 w 4988
wise 1 w 4992
for 10 w 4996
since 1 w 5001
things 4 w 5007
are 13 w 5010
in 79 w 5012
motion 1 w 5018
φερόμενα 1 w 5027
that 18 w 5033
which 5 w 5038
grasps 1 w 5044
ἐφαπτόμενον 1 w 5056
and 36 w 5060
touches 1 w 5067
ἐπαφῶν 1 w 5074
and 37 w 5078
is 61 w 5080
able 1 w 5084
to 34 w 5086
follow 1 w 5092
them 10 w 5096
is 62 w 5098
wisdom 2 w 5104
Pherepapha 1 w 5115
or 24 w 5118
something 3 w 5127
of 39 w 5129
that 19 w 5133
sort 2 w 5137
would 4 w 5143
therefore 1 w 5152
be 29 w 5154
the 114 w 5157
correct 2 w 5164
name 18 w 5168
of 40 w 5170
the 115 w 5173
goddess 2 w 5180
because 8 w 5188
she 2 w 5191
is 64 w 5193
wise 2 w 5197
and 38 w 5200
touches 2 w 5207
that 20 w 5211
which 6 w 5216
is 66 w 5218
in 81 w 5220
motion 2 w 5226
ἐπαφὴ 1 w 5232
τοῦ 1 w 5235
φερομένου 1 w 5244
and 39 w 5249
this 12 w 5253
is 68 w 5255
the 116 w 5258
reason 4 w 5264
why 2 w 5267
Hades 6 w 5272
who 6 w 5276
is 69 w 5278
wise 3 w 5282
consorts 1 w 5291
with 12 w 5295
her 30 w 5298
because 9 w 5306
she 3 w 5309
is 71 w 5311
wise 4 w 5315
but 7 w 5319
people 4 w 5325
have 7 w 5329
altered 1 w 5336
her 31 w 5339
name 19 w 5343
attaching 1 w 5353
more 2 w 5357
importance 1 w 5367
to 36 w 5369
euphony 2 w 5376
than 2 w 5380
to 37 w 5382
truth 1 w 5387
and 40 w 5391
they 9 w 5395
call 8 w 5399
her 32 w 5402
Pherephatta 2 w 5413
Likewise 1 w 5422
in 83 w 5424
the 118 w 5427
case 1 w 5431
of 41 w 5433
Apollo 3 w 5439
as 31 w 5442
I 15 w 5443
say 9 w 5446
many 6 w 5451
people 5 w 5457
are 14 w 5460
afraid 4 w 5466
because 10 w 5473
of 42 w 5475
the 119 w 5478
name 20 w 5482
of 43 w 5484
the 120 w 5487
god 10 w 5490
thinking 1 w 5499
that 21 w 5503
it 32 w 5505
has 3 w 5508
some 9 w 5512
terrible 1 w 5520
meaning 1 w 5527
Have 1 w 5532
you 13 w 5535
not 16 w 5538
noticed 1 w 5545
that 22 w 5549
Hermogenes 19 w 5560
Certainly 1 w 5570
what 7 w 5575
you 14 w 5578
say 10 w 5581
is 74 w 5583
true 1 w 5587
Socrates 27 w 5596
But 6 w 5600
really 2 w 5606
the 121 w 5609
name 21 w 5613
is 75 w 5615
admirably 1 w 5624
appropriate 1 w 5635
to 38 w 5637
the 122 w 5640
power 5 w 5645
of 44 w 5647
the 123 w 5650
god 11 w 5653
Hermogenes 20 w 5664
How 3 w 5668
is 76 w 5670
that 23 w 5674
