Socrates. And his father also, who is said to be Zeus, appears to have a very excellent name, but it is not easy to understand;
396
396a
for the name of Zeus is exactly like a sentence; we divide it into two parts, and some of us use one part, others the other; for some call him Zena (Ζῆνα), and others Dia (Δία); but the two in combination express the nature of the god, which is just what we said a name should be able to do. For certainly no one is so much the author of life (ζῆν) for us and all others as the ruler and king of all.
396b
Thus this god is correctly named, through whom (δι ὅν) all living beings have the gift of life (ζῆν). But, as I say, the name is divided, though it is one name, into the two parts, Dia and Zena. And it might seem, at first hearing, highly irreverent to call him the son of Cronus and reasonable to say that Zeus is the offspring of some great intellect; and so he is, for κόρος (for Κρόνος) signifies not child, but the purity (καθαρόν) and unblemished nature of his mind. And Cronus, according to tradition, is the son of Uranus; but the upward gaze is rightly called by the name urania (οὐρανία),
396c
looking at the things above (ὁρῶ τὰ ἄνω), and the astronomers say, Hermogenes, that from this looking people acquire a pure mind, and Uranus is correctly named. If I remembered the genealogy of Hesiod and the still earlier ancestors of the gods he mentions, I would have gone on examining the correctness of their names until I had made a complete trial whether this wisdom which has suddenly come to me, I know not whence,
396d
will fail or not.

Hermogenes. Indeed, Socrates, you do seem to me to be uttering oracles, exactly like an inspired prophet.

Socrates. Yes, Hermogenes, and I am convinced that the inspiration came to me from Euthyphro the Prospaltian. For I was with him and listening to him a long time early this morning. So he must have been inspired, and he not only filled my ears but took possession of my soul with his superhuman wisdom. So I think this is our duty:
396e
we ought today to make use of this wisdom and finish the investigation of names, but tomorrow, if the rest of you agree, we will conjure it away and purify ourselves, when we have found some one, whether priest or sophist,
397
397a
who is skilled in that kind of purifying.

Hermogenes. I agree, for I should be very glad to hear the rest of the talk about names.

Socrates. Very well. Then since we have outlined a general plan of investigation, where shall we begin, that we may discover whether the names themselves will bear witness that they are not at all distributed at haphazard, but have a certain correctness?
397b
Now the names of heroes and men might perhaps prove deceptive; for they are often given because they were names of ancestors, and in some cases, as we said in the beginning, they are quite inappropriate; many, too, are given as the expression of a prayer, such as Eutychides (fortunate), Sosias (saviour), Theophilus (beloved of God), and many others. I think we had better disregard such as these; but we are most likely to find the correct names in the nature of the eternal and absolute; for there the names ought to have been given with the greatest care,
397c
and perhaps some of them were given by a power more divine than is that of men.

Hermogenes. I think you are right, Socrates.

Socrates. Then is it not proper to begin with the gods and see how the gods are rightly called by that name?

Hermogenes. That is reasonable.

Socrates. Something of this sort, then, is what I suspect: I think the earliest men in Greece believed only in those gods in whom many foreigners believe today
397d
sun, moon, earth, stars, and sky. They saw that all these were always moving in their courses and running, and so they called them gods (θεούς) from this running (θεῖν) nature; then afterwards, when they gained knowledge of the other gods, they called them all by the same name. Is that likely to be true, or not?

Hermogenes. Yes, very likely.

Socrates. What shall we consider next?
397e

Hermogenes. Spirits, obviously.

Socrates. Hermogenes, what does the name spirits really mean? See if you think there is anything in what I am going to say.

Hermogenes. Go on and say it.

Socrates. Do you remember who Hesiod says the spirits are?

Hermogenes. I do not recall it.

Socrates. Nor that he says a golden race was the first race of men to be born?

Hermogenes. Yes, I do know that.

Socrates. Well, he says of it:
But since Fate has covered up this race,
398
398a
They are called holy spirits under the earth,
Noble, averters of evil, guardians of mortal men.
Hes. WD 122 ff

Hermogenes. What of that?

Socrates. Why, I think he means that the golden race was not made of gold, but was good and beautiful. And I regard it as a proof of this that he further says we are the iron race.

Hermogenes. True.

Socrates. Dont you suppose that if anyone of our day is good,
398b
Hesiod would say he was of that golden race?

Hermogenes. Quite likely.

Socrates. But the good are the wise, are they not?

Hermogenes. Yes, they are the wise.

Socrates. This, then, I think, is what he certainly means to say of the spirits: because they were wise and knowing (δαήμονες) he called them spirits (δαίμονες) and in the old form of our language the two words are the same. Now he and all the other poets are right, who say that when a good man dies
398c
he has a great portion and honor among the dead, and becomes a spirit, a name which is in accordance with the other name of wisdom. And so I assert that every good man, whether living or dead, is of spiritual nature, and is rightly called a spirit.

Hermogenes. And I, Socrates, believe I quite agree with you in that. But what is the word hero?

Socrates. That is easy to understand; for the name has been but slightly changed, and indicates their origin from love (ἔρως).

Hermogenes. What do you mean?
398d

Socrates. Why, they were all born because a god fell in love with a mortal woman, or a mortal man with a goddess. Now if you consider the word hero also in the old Attic pronunciation,[*] you will understand better; for that will show you that it has been only slightly altered from the name of love (Eros), the source from which the heroes spring, to make a name for them. And either this is the reason why they are called heroes, or it is because they were wise and clever orators and dialecticians, able to ask questions (ἐρωτᾶν), for εἴρειν is the same as λέγειν (speak). Therefore, when their name is spoken in the Attic dialect, which I was mentioning just now, the heroes turn out to be orators and askers of questions,
398e
so that the heroic race proves to be a race of orators and sophists. That is easy to understand, but the case of men, and the reason why they are called men (ἄνθρωποι), is more difficult. Can you tell me what it is?

Hermogenes. No, my friend, I cannot; and even if I might perhaps find out, I shall not try, because I think you are more likely to find out than I am.

Hermogenes 3 w 1384
and 13 w 1388
I 8 w 1389
am 11 w 1391
convinced 1 w 1400
that 3 w 1404
the 30 w 1407

I 9 w 1458

So 4 w 1513
he 39 w 1515

he 40 w 1541

the 51 w 2517
eternal 1 w 2524
and 21 w 2527
absolute 1 w 2535
for 9 w 2539
there 1 w 2544
the 53 w 2547
names 8 w 2552
ought 2 w 2557
to 24 w 2559
have 8 w 2563
been 2 w 2567
given 3 w 2572
with 3 w 2576
the 54 w 2579
greatest 1 w 2587
care 1 w 2591
and 22 w 2595
perhaps 2 w 2602
some 6 w 2606
of 28 w 2608
them 2 w 2612
were 2 w 2616
given 4 w 2621
by 2 w 2623
a 191 w 2624
power 1 w 2629
more 1 w 2633
divine 1 w 2639
than 1 w 2643
is 35 w 2645
that 7 w 2649
of 29 w 2651
men 3 w 2654
Hermogenes 5 w 2665
I 14 w 2667
think 3 w 2672
you 3 w 2675
are 7 w 2678
right 2 w 2683
Socrates 5 w 2692
Socrates 6 w 2701
Then 2 w 2706
is 36 w 2708
it 13 w 2710
not 7 w 2713
proper 1 w 2719
to 25 w 2721
begin 3 w 2726
with 4 w 2730
the 56 w 2733
gods 2 w 2737
and 23 w 2740
see 3 w 2743
how 1 w 2746
the 57 w 2749
gods 3 w 2753
are 8 w 2756
rightly 2 w 2763
called 2 w 2769
by 3 w 2771
that 8 w 2775
name 17 w 2779
Hermogenes 6 w 2790
That 1 w 2795
is 37 w 2797
reasonable 2 w 2807
Socrates 7 w 2816
Something 1 w 2826
of 30 w 2828
this 7 w 2832
sort 1 w 2836
then 1 w 2841
is 39 w 2844
what 2 w 2848
I 15 w 2849
suspect 1 w 2856
I 16 w 2858
think 4 w 2863
the 59 w 2866
earliest 1 w 2874
men 4 w 2877
in 51 w 2879
Greece 1 w 2885
believed 1 w 2893
only 2 w 2897
in 52 w 2899
those 1 w 2904

in 53 w 2910
whom 2 w 2914
many 3 w 2918
foreigners 1 w 2928
believe 2 w 2935
today 2 w 2940

earth 1 w 2955
stars 1 w 2961
and 24 w 2965

They 1 w 2973
saw 1 w 2976
that 9 w 2980
all 10 w 2983
these 2 w 2988
were 3 w 2992
always 1 w 2998
moving 1 w 3004
in 55 w 3006
their 2 w 3011
courses 1 w 3018
and 25 w 3021
running 1 w 3028
and 26 w 3032
so 18 w 3034
they 5 w 3038
called 3 w 3044
them 3 w 3048
gods 5 w 3052
θεούς 1 w 3058
from 3 w 3063
this 8 w 3067
running 2 w 3074
θεῖν 1 w 3079
nature 4 w 3086
then 2 w 3091
afterwards 1 w 3101
when 3 w 3106
they 6 w 3110
gained 1 w 3116
knowledge 1 w 3125
of 31 w 3127
the 66 w 3130
other 6 w 3135
gods 6 w 3139
they 7 w 3144
called 4 w 3150
them 4 w 3154
all 13 w 3157
by 4 w 3159
the 70 w 3162

Is 1 w 3173
that 10 w 3177
likely 2 w 3183

be 18 w 3187
true 1 w 3191
or 29 w 3194
not 8 w 3197
Hermogenes 7 w 3208
Yes 2 w 3212
very 3 w 3217
likely 3 w 3223
Socrates 8 w 3232
What 1 w 3237
shall 2 w 3242
we 17 w 3244
consider 1 w 3252
next 1 w 3256
Hermogenes 8 w 3267
Spirits 1 w 3275

Socrates 9 w 3294
Hermogenes 9 w 3305
what 3 w 3310
does 1 w 3314
the 71 w 3317
name 19 w 3321
spirits 1 w 3328
really 1 w 3334

See 1 w 3342
if 8 w 3344
you 4 w 3347
think 5 w 3352
there 2 w 3357
is 41 w 3359
anything 1 w 3367
in 61 w 3369
what 4 w 3373
I 18 w 3374
am 24 w 3376
going 1 w 3381

say 4 w 3386
Hermogenes 10 w 3397
Go 2 w 3400
on 29 w 3402
and 27 w 3405
say 5 w 3408
it 17 w 3410
Socrates 10 w 3419
Do 1 w 3422
you 5 w 3425
remember 2 w 3433
who 5 w 3436
Hesiod 2 w 3442
says 1 w 3446
the 73 w 3449
spirits 2 w 3456
are 9 w 3459
Hermogenes 11 w 3470
I 19 w 3472
do 7 w 3474
not 9 w 3477
recall 1 w 3483
it 19 w 3485
Socrates 11 w 3494
Nor 1 w 3498
that 11 w 3502
he 94 w 3504
says 2 w 3508
a 251 w 3509

was 2 w 3522
the 74 w 3525

Hermogenes 12 w 3558
Yes 3 w 3562
I 20 w 3564
do 8 w 3566
know 3 w 3570
that 12 w 3574
Socrates 12 w 3583
Well 1 w 3588
he 96 w 3591
says 3 w 3595
of 33 w 3597
it 20 w 3599
But 2 w 3603
since 2 w 3608
Fate 1 w 3612
has 2 w 3615
covered 1 w 3622
up 3 w 3624
this 9 w 3628
race 3 w 3632
They 2 w 3637
are 10 w 3640
called 5 w 3646
holy 1 w 3650

Hes 3 w 3716
WD 1 w 3719
122 1 w 3722
ff 2 w 3724
Hermogenes 13 w 3734
What 2 w 3739
of 36 w 3741
that 13 w 3745
Socrates 13 w 3754
Why 1 w 3758
I 21 w 3760
think 6 w 3765
he 99 w 3767
means 1 w 3772
that 14 w 3776
the 76 w 3779
golden 2 w 3785
race 4 w 3789
was 3 w 3792
not 10 w 3795
made 2 w 3799
of 37 w 3801
gold 3 w 3805
but 10 w 3809
was 4 w 3812
good 1 w 3816
and 28 w 3819
beautiful 1 w 3828
And 4 w 3832
I 22 w 3833
regard 2 w 3839
it 22 w 3841
as 19 w 3843
a 281 w 3844
proof 1 w 3849
of 39 w 3851
this 10 w 3855
that 15 w 3859
he 101 w 3861
further 1 w 3868
says 4 w 3872
we 18 w 3874
are 11 w 3877
the 78 w 3880
iron 1 w 3884
race 5 w 3888
Hermogenes 14 w 3899
True 1 w 3904
Socrates 14 w 3913
Don 1 w 3917
t 324 w 3919
you 6 w 3922
suppose 1 w 3929
that 16 w 3933
if 10 w 3935
anyone 1 w 3941
of 40 w 3943
our 5 w 3946
day 3 w 3949
is 44 w 3951
good 2 w 3955
Hesiod 3 w 3962
would 2 w 3967
say 10 w 3970
he 104 w 3972
was 5 w 3975
of 41 w 3977
that 17 w 3981
golden 3 w 3987
race 6 w 3991
Hermogenes 15 w 4002
Quite 1 w 4008
likely 4 w 4014
Socrates 15 w 4023
But 3 w 4027
the 79 w 4030
good 3 w 4034
are 12 w 4037
the 80 w 4040
wise 1 w 4044
are 13 w 4048
they 8 w 4052
not 11 w 4055
Hermogenes 16 w 4066
Yes 4 w 4070
they 9 w 4075
are 14 w 4078
the 83 w 4081
wise 2 w 4085
Socrates 16 w 4094
This 1 w 4099
then 3 w 4104
I 23 w 4106
think 7 w 4111
is 48 w 4114
what 5 w 4118
he 111 w 4120
certainly 2 w 4129
means 2 w 4134
to 30 w 4136
say 11 w 4139
of 42 w 4141
the 85 w 4144
spirits 4 w 4151
because 2 w 4159
they 10 w 4163
were 4 w 4167
wise 3 w 4171
and 29 w 4174
knowing 1 w 4181

called 6 w 4199
them 5 w 4203
spirits 5 w 4210
δαίμονες 1 w 4219
and 30 w 4223
in 68 w 4225
the 88 w 4228
old 5 w 4231
form 1 w 4235
of 43 w 4237
our 6 w 4240
language 1 w 4248
the 89 w 4251
two 4 w 4254
words 1 w 4259
are 15 w 4262
the 90 w 4265
same 2 w 4269
Now 2 w 4273
he 119 w 4275
and 31 w 4278
all 19 w 4281
the 91 w 4284
other 7 w 4289
poets 1 w 4294
are 16 w 4297
right 4 w 4302
who 6 w 4306
say 12 w 4309
that 18 w 4313
when 4 w 4317
a 316 w 4318
good 4 w 4322
man 5 w 4325
dies 1 w 4329
he 123 w 4331
has 3 w 4334
a 319 w 4335
great 3 w 4340
portion 1 w 4347
and 32 w 4350
honor 1 w 4355
among 1 w 4360
the 93 w 4363
dead 1 w 4367
and 33 w 4371
becomes 1 w 4378
a 325 w 4379
spirit 6 w 4385
a 326 w 4387
name 20 w 4391
which 3 w 4396
is 50 w 4398
in 69 w 4400
accordance 1 w 4410
with 5 w 4414
the 94 w 4417
other 8 w 4422
name 21 w 4426
of 44 w 4428
wisdom 4 w 4434
And 5 w 4438
so 19 w 4440
I 24 w 4441
assert 1 w 4447
that 19 w 4451
every 1 w 4456
good 5 w 4460
man 6 w 4463
whether 4 w 4471
living 2 w 4477

dead 2 w 4483
is 52 w 4486
of 45 w 4488
spiritual 1 w 4497

and 34 w 4507
is 53 w 4509
rightly 3 w 4516
called 7 w 4522
a 339 w 4523

Hermogenes 17 w 4540
And 6 w 4544
I 25 w 4545
Socrates 17 w 4554
believe 3 w 4562
I 26 w 4563
quite 2 w 4568
agree 3 w 4573
with 6 w 4577
you 7 w 4580
in 71 w 4582
that 20 w 4586
But 4 w 4590
what 6 w 4594
is 54 w 4596
the 97 w 4599
word 2 w 4603
hero 2 w 4607
Socrates 18 w 4616
That 2 w 4621
is 55 w 4623
easy 2 w 4627
to 31 w 4629
understand 2 w 4639
for 12 w 4643
the 98 w 4646
name 22 w 4650
has 4 w 4653
been 3 w 4657
but 11 w 4660

Why 2 w 4751
they 11 w 4756

because 3 w 4774
