When, Caesar, the victor, was pursuing Cn. Pompeius in the most extreme opposite part of the earth and heard that numerous adversaries, after collecting those left after the flight, had arrived in Illyricum, owing to its proximity to Macedonia, he sent a message to Gabinius, [bidding him] that he set out with his legions of recruits, which had been conscripted just recently, for Illyricum. After joining his forces with Q. Cornificus, he was to dispel any danger inflicted on the province; if, however, the province could not be secured with forces that were not large, he was to lead his legions into Macedonia.
