When Caesar saw that his soldiers could fight no more vigorously, and yet that little headway was being made owing to the difficulty of their positions, and when he noticed that the Alexandrians had neglected their stronghold's most elevated position both because it provided its own defense and because, in their eagerness in some cases to fight, in others to look on, the men had rushed down to the position in which there was fighting, he ordered three cohorts to encircle the stronghold and to attack the most elevated position, and he put Carfulenus in command of them, a man outstanding in both greatness of spirit and knowledge of military affairs.
