Now there was one whose name was Ananias (a wicked man he was, and very mischievous); he proposed that a general religious fast [*] should be appointed the next day for all the people, and gave order that at the same hour they should come to the same place, without any weapons, to make it manifest before God, that while they obtained his assistance, they thought all these weapons useless. This he said, not out of piety, but that they might catch me and my friends unarmed. Now, I was hereupon forced to comply, lest I should appear to despise a proposal that tended to piety. As soon, therefore, as we were gone home, Jonathan and his colleagues wrote to John to come to them in the morning, and desiring him to come with as many soldiers as he possibly could, for that they should then be able easily to get me into their hands, and to do all they desired to do. When John had received this letter, he resolved to comply with it. As for myself, on the next day, I ordered two of the guards of my body, whom I esteemed the most courageous and most faithful, to hide daggers under their garments, and to go along with me, that we might defend ourselves, if any attack should be made upon us by our enemies. I also myself took my breastplate, and girded on my sword, so that it might be, as far as it was possible, concealed, and came into the Proseucha.

57

Now Jesus, who was the ruler, commanded that they should exclude all that came with me, for he kept the door himself, and suffered none but his friends to go in. And while we were engaged in the duties of the day, and had betaken ourselves to our prayers, Jesus got up, and inquired of me what was become of the vessels that were taken out of the kings palace, when it was burnt down [and] of that uncoined silver; and in whose possession they now were? This he said, in order to drive away time till John should come. I said that Capellus, and the ten principal men of Tiberias, had them all; and I told him that they might ask them whether I told a lie or not. And when they said they had them, he asked me, What is become of those twenty pieces of gold which thou didst receive upon the sale of a certain weight of uncoined money? I replied, that I had given them to those ambassadors of theirs, as a maintenance for them, when they were sent by them to Jerusalem. So Jonathan and his colleagues said that I had not done well to pay the ambassadors out of the public money. And when the multitude were very angry at them for this, for they perceived the wickednes of the men, I understood that a tumult was going to arise; and being desirous to provoke the people to a greater rage against the men, I said, But if I have not done well in paying our ambassadors out of the public stock, leave off your anger at me, for I will repay the twenty pieces of gold myself.

58

When I had said this, Jonathan and his colleagues held their peace; but the people were still more irritated against them, upon their openly showing their unjust ill-will to me. When Jesus saw this change in file people, he ordered them to depart, but desired the senate to stay; for that they could not examine things of such a nature in a tumult: and as the people were crying out that they would not leave me alone, there came one and told Jesus and his friends privately, that John and his armed men were at hand: whereupon Jonathan and his colleagues, being able to contain themselves no longer, (and perhaps the providence of God hereby procuring my deliverance, for had not this been so, I had certainly been destroyed by John,) said, O you people of Tiberias! leave off this inquiry about the twenty pieces of gold; for Josephus hath not deserved to die for them; but he hath deserved it by his desire of tyrannizing, and by cheating the multitude of the Galileans with his speeches, in order to gain the dominion over them. When he had said this, they presently laid hands upon me, and endeavored to kill me: but as soon as those that were with me saw what they did, they drew their swords, and threatened to smite them, if they offered any violence to me. The people also took up stones, and were about to throw them at Jonathan; and so they snatched me from the violence of my enemies.

59

But as I was gone out a little way, I was just upon meeting John, who was marching with his armed men. So I was afraid of him, and turned aside, and escaped by a narrow passage to the lake, and seized on a ship, and embarked in it, and sailed over to Tarichese. So, beyond my expectation, I escaped this danger. Whereupon I presently sent for the chief of the Galileans, and told them after what manner, against all faith given, I had been very near to destruction from Jonathan and his colleagues, and the people of Tiberias. Upon which the multitude of the Galileans were very. angry, and encouraged me to delay no longer to make war upon them, but to permit them to go against John, and utterly to destroy him, as well as Jonathan and his colleagues. However, I restrained them, though they were in such a rage, and desired them to tarry a while, till we should be informed what orders those ambassadors, that were sent by them to the city of Jerusalem, should bring thence; for I told them that it was best for them to act according to their determination; whereupon they were prevailed on. At which time, also, John, when the snares he had laid did not take effect, returned back to Gischala.

60

Now, in a few days, those ambassadors whom he had sent, came back again and informed us, that the people were greatly provoked at Ananus, and Simon the son of Gamaliel, and their friends; that, without any public determination, they had sent to Galilee, and had done their endeavors that I might be turned out of the government. The ambassadors said further, that the people were ready to burn their houses. They also brought letters, whereby the chief men of Jerusalem, at the earnest petition of the people, confirmed me in the government of Galilee, and enjoined Jonathan and his colleagues to return home quickly. When I had gotten these letters, I came to the village Arbela, where I procured an assembly of the Galileans to meet, and bid the ambassadors declare to them the anger of the people of Jerusalem at what had been done by Jonathan and his colleagues, and how much they hated their wicked doings, and how they had confirmed me in the government of their country, as also what related to the order they had in writing for Jonathan and his colleagues to return home. So I immediately sent them the letter, and bid him that carried it to inquire, as well as he could, how they intended to act [on this occasion.]

upon 5 w 2560
their 5 w 2565
openly 1 w 2571
showing 1 w 2578
their 6 w 2583
unjust 1 w 2589
ill-will 1 w 2597
to 34 w 2599
me 27 w 2601
When 3 w 2606
Jesus 3 w 2611
saw 1 w 2614
this 5 w 2618
change 1 w 2624
in 28 w 2626
file 1 w 2630
people 4 w 2636
he 81 w 2639
ordered 2 w 2646
them 10 w 2650
to 35 w 2652
depart 1 w 2658
but 5 w 2662
desired 2 w 2669
the 62 w 2672
senate 1 w 2678
to 36 w 2680
stay 1 w 2684
for 12 w 2688
that 19 w 2692
they 14 w 2696
could 2 w 2701
not 6 w 2704
examine 1 w 2711
things 1 w 2717
of 21 w 2719
such 1 w 2723
a 211 w 2724
nature 1 w 2730
in 31 w 2732
a 213 w 2733
tumult 2 w 2739
and 24 w 2743
as 33 w 2745
the 64 w 2748
people 5 w 2754
were 8 w 2758
crying 1 w 2764
out 7 w 2767
that 20 w 2771
they 15 w 2775
would 1 w 2780
not 7 w 2783
leave 2 w 2788
me 28 w 2790
alone 1 w 2795
there 3 w 2801
came 3 w 2805
one 9 w 2808
and 25 w 2811
told 3 w 2815
Jesus 4 w 2820
and 26 w 2823
his 13 w 2826
friends 3 w 2833
privately 1 w 2842
that 21 w 2847
John 4 w 2851
and 27 w 2854
his 14 w 2857
armed 2 w 2862
men 5 w 2865
were 9 w 2869
at 39 w 2871
hand 2 w 2875
whereupon 1 w 2885
Jonathan 4 w 2893
and 29 w 2896
his 15 w 2899
colleagues 4 w 2909
being 2 w 2915
able 2 w 2919
to 38 w 2921
contain 1 w 2928
themselves 1 w 2938
no 10 w 2940
longer 1 w 2946
and 30 w 2951
perhaps 1 w 2958
the 68 w 2961
providence 1 w 2971
of 22 w 2973
God 2 w 2976
hereby 1 w 2982
procuring 1 w 2991
my 8 w 2993
deliverance 1 w 3004
for 13 w 3008
had 8 w 3011
not 8 w 3014
this 6 w 3018
been 1 w 3022
so 6 w 3024
I 17 w 3026
had 9 w 3029
certainly 1 w 3038
been 2 w 3042
destroyed 1 w 3051
by 4 w 3053
John 5 w 3057
said 8 w 3063
O 2 w 3065
you 2 w 3068
people 6 w 3074
of 23 w 3076
Tiberias 3 w 3084
leave 3 w 3090
off 2 w 3093
this 7 w 3097
inquiry 1 w 3104
about 1 w 3109
the 69 w 3112
twenty 3 w 3118
pieces 3 w 3124
of 25 w 3126
gold 3 w 3130
for 14 w 3134
Josephus 1 w 3142
hath 1 w 3146
not 9 w 3149
deserved 1 w 3157
to 39 w 3159
die 2 w 3162
for 15 w 3165
them 12 w 3169
but 6 w 3173
he 94 w 3175
hath 2 w 3179
deserved 2 w 3187
it 15 w 3189
by 5 w 3191
his 18 w 3194
desire 3 w 3200
of 26 w 3202
tyrannizing 1 w 3213
and 31 w 3217
by 6 w 3219
cheating 1 w 3227
the 71 w 3230
multitude 2 w 3239
of 27 w 3241
the 72 w 3244
Galileans 1 w 3253
with 6 w 3257
his 19 w 3260
speeches 1 w 3268
in 40 w 3271
order 5 w 3276
to 40 w 3278
gain 3 w 3282
the 73 w 3285
dominion 1 w 3293
over 1 w 3297
them 13 w 3301
When 4 w 3306
he 102 w 3308
had 10 w 3311
said 9 w 3315
this 8 w 3319
they 16 w 3324
presently 1 w 3333
laid 1 w 3337
hands 2 w 3342
upon 7 w 3346
me 32 w 3348
and 33 w 3352
endeavored 1 w 3362
to 41 w 3364
kill 1 w 3368
me 33 w 3370
but 7 w 3374
as 35 w 3376
soon 2 w 3380
as 36 w 3382
those 3 w 3387
that 22 w 3391
were 10 w 3395
with 7 w 3399
me 34 w 3401
saw 2 w 3404
what 2 w 3408
they 17 w 3412
did 2 w 3415
they 18 w 3420
drew 1 w 3424
their 7 w 3429
swords 1 w 3435
and 34 w 3439
threatened 1 w 3449
to 42 w 3451
smite 1 w 3456
them 14 w 3460
if 4 w 3463
they 19 w 3467
offered 1 w 3474
any 4 w 3477
violence 1 w 3485
to 43 w 3487
me 35 w 3489
The 1 w 3493
people 7 w 3499
also 2 w 3503
took 3 w 3507
up 9 w 3509
stones 1 w 3515
and 35 w 3519
were 11 w 3523
about 2 w 3528
to 46 w 3530
throw 1 w 3535
them 15 w 3539
at 47 w 3541
Jonathan 5 w 3549
and 36 w 3553
so 9 w 3555
they 20 w 3559
snatched 1 w 3567
me 36 w 3569
from 1 w 3573
the 83 w 3576
violence 2 w 3584
of 29 w 3586
my 9 w 3588
enemies 2 w 3595
But 2 w 3599
as 37 w 3601
I 18 w 3602
was 13 w 3605
gone 2 w 3609
out 10 w 3612
a 276 w 3613
little 1 w 3619
way 2 w 3622
I 19 w 3624
was 14 w 3627
just 2 w 3631
upon 8 w 3635
meeting 1 w 3642
John 6 w 3646
who 5 w 3650
was 15 w 3653
marching 1 w 3661
with 8 w 3665
his 21 w 3668
armed 3 w 3673
men 6 w 3676
So 2 w 3679
I 20 w 3680
was 16 w 3683
afraid 1 w 3689
of 30 w 3691
him 5 w 3694
and 37 w 3698
turned 1 w 3704
aside 1 w 3709
and 38 w 3713
escaped 1 w 3720
by 7 w 3722
a 289 w 3723
narrow 1 w 3729
passage 1 w 3736
to 47 w 3738
the 84 w 3741
lake 1 w 3745
and 39 w 3749
seized 1 w 3755
on 38 w 3757
a 295 w 3758
ship 1 w 3762
and 40 w 3766
embarked 1 w 3774
in 45 w 3776
it 22 w 3778
and 41 w 3782
sailed 1 w 3788
over 2 w 3792
to 48 w 3794
Tarichese 1 w 3803
So 3 w 3806
beyond 1 w 3813
my 10 w 3815
expectation 1 w 3826
I 21 w 3828
escaped 2 w 3835
this 9 w 3839
danger 1 w 3845
Whereupon 1 w 3855
I 22 w 3856
presently 2 w 3865
sent 4 w 3869
for 16 w 3872
the 85 w 3875
chief 1 w 3880
of 31 w 3882
the 86 w 3885
Galileans 2 w 3894
and 42 w 3898
told 4 w 3902
them 16 w 3906
after 1 w 3911
what 3 w 3915
manner 1 w 3921
against 3 w 3929
all 6 w 3932
faith 2 w 3937
given 2 w 3942
I 23 w 3944
had 11 w 3947
been 3 w 3951
very 3 w 3955
near 1 w 3959
to 50 w 3961
destruction 1 w 3972
from 2 w 3976
Jonathan 6 w 3984
and 43 w 3987
his 23 w 3990
colleagues 5 w 4000
and 44 w 4004
the 88 w 4007
people 8 w 4013
of 32 w 4015
Tiberias 4 w 4023
Upon 1 w 4028
which 2 w 4033
the 89 w 4036
multitude 3 w 4045
of 33 w 4047
the 90 w 4050
Galileans 3 w 4059
were 12 w 4063
very 4 w 4067
angry 2 w 4073
and 45 w 4077
encouraged 1 w 4087
me 40 w 4089
to 51 w 4091
delay 1 w 4096
no 13 w 4098
longer 2 w 4104
to 52 w 4106
make 2 w 4110
war 1 w 4113
upon 10 w 4117
them 17 w 4121
but 8 w 4125
to 53 w 4127
permit 1 w 4133
them 18 w 4137
to 54 w 4139
go 10 w 4141
against 4 w 4148
John 7 w 4152
and 46 w 4156
utterly 1 w 4163
to 55 w 4165
destroy 2 w 4172
him 6 w 4175
as 45 w 4178
well 3 w 4182
as 46 w 4184
Jonathan 7 w 4192
and 47 w 4195
his 24 w 4198
colleagues 6 w 4208
However 1 w 4216
I 24 w 4218
restrained 1 w 4228
them 19 w 4232
though 3 w 4239
they 21 w 4243
were 13 w 4247
in 49 w 4249
such 2 w 4253
a 340 w 4254
rage 4 w 4258
and 48 w 4262
desired 3 w 4269
them 20 w 4273
to 56 w 4275
tarry 1 w 4280
a 344 w 4281
while 3 w 4286
till 3 w 4291
we 28 w 4293
should 8 w 4299
be 20 w 4301
informed 1 w 4309
what 4 w 4313
orders 1 w 4319
those 4 w 4324
ambassadors 4 w 4335
that 23 w 4340
were 14 w 4344
sent 5 w 4348
by 8 w 4350
them 21 w 4354
to 57 w 4356
the 97 w 4359
city 1 w 4363
of 34 w 4365
Jerusalem 2 w 4374
should 9 w 4381
bring 1 w 4386
thence 1 w 4392
for 18 w 4396
I 25 w 4397
told 5 w 4401
them 22 w 4405
that 24 w 4409
it 27 w 4411
was 17 w 4414
best 1 w 4418
for 19 w 4421
them 23 w 4425
to 59 w 4427
act 1 w 4430
according 1 w 4439
to 60 w 4441
their 8 w 4446
determination 1 w 4459
whereupon 2 w 4469
they 22 w 4473
were 15 w 4477
prevailed 1 w 4486
on 50 w 4488
At 1 w 4491
which 3 w 4496
time 2 w 4500
also 3 w 4505
John 8 w 4510
when 5 w 4515
the 103 w 4518
snares 1 w 4524
he 138 w 4526
had 12 w 4529
laid 2 w 4533
did 3 w 4536
not 10 w 4539
take 3 w 4543
effect 1 w 4549
returned 1 w 4558
back 1 w 4562
to 61 w 4564
Gischala 1 w 4572
Now 4 w 4576
in 54 w 4579
a 365 w 4580
few 1 w 4583
days 1 w 4587
those 5 w 4593
ambassadors 5 w 4604
whom 2 w 4608
he 139 w 4610
had 13 w 4613
sent 6 w 4617
came 4 w 4622
back 2 w 4626
again 5 w 4631
and 49 w 4634
informed 2 w 4642
us 17 w 4644
that 25 w 4649
the 104 w 4652
people 9 w 4658
were 16 w 4662
greatly 1 w 4669
provoked 1 w 4677
at 60 w 4679
Ananus 1 w 4685
and 50 w 4689
Simon 1 w 4694
the 105 w 4697
son 1 w 4700
of 35 w 4702
Gamaliel 1 w 4710
and 51 w 4714
their 9 w 4719
friends 4 w 4726
that 26 w 4731
without 2 w 4739
any 5 w 4742
public 3 w 4748
determination 2 w 4761
they 23 w 4766
had 14 w 4769
sent 7 w 4773
to 62 w 4775
Galilee 1 w 4782
and 52 w 4786
had 15 w 4789
done 3 w 4793
their 10 w 4798
endeavors 1 w 4807
that 27 w 4811
I 26 w 4812
might 5 w 4817
be 22 w 4819
turned 3 w 4825
out 12 w 4828
of 36 w 4830
the 109 w 4833
government 1 w 4843
The 2 w 4847
ambassadors 6 w 4858
said 10 w 4862
further 1 w 4869
that 28 w 4874
the 111 w 4877
people 10 w 4883
were 17 w 4887
ready 1 w 4892
to 63 w 4894
burn 2 w 4898
their 11 w 4903
houses 1 w 4909
They 1 w 4914
also 4 w 4918
brought 1 w 4925
letters 1 w 4932
whereby 1 w 4940
the 113 w 4943
chief 2 w 4948
men 8 w 4951
of 37 w 4953
Jerusalem 3 w 4962
at 65 w 4965
the 114 w 4968
earnest 1 w 4975
petition 1 w 4983
of 38 w 4985
the 115 w 4988
people 11 w 4994
confirmed 1 w 5004
me 48 w 5006
in 58 w 5008
the 116 w 5011
government 2 w 5021
of 39 w 5023
Galilee 2 w 5030
and 53 w 5034
enjoined 1 w 5042
Jonathan 8 w 5050
and 54 w 5053
his 25 w 5056
colleagues 7 w 5066
to 64 w 5068
return 2 w 5074
home 2 w 5078
quickly 1 w 5085
When 5 w 5090
I 27 w 5091
had 16 w 5094
gotten 1 w 5100
these 2 w 5105
letters 2 w 5112
I 28 w 5114
came 5 w 5118
to 65 w 5120
the 118 w 5123
village 1 w 5130
Arbela 1 w 5136
where 4 w 5142
I 29 w 5143
procured 1 w 5151
an 86 w 5153
assembly 1 w 5161
of 40 w 5163
the 119 w 5166
Galileans 4 w 5175
to 66 w 5177
meet 2 w 5181
and 55 w 5185
bid 1 w 5188
the 120 w 5191
ambassadors 7 w 5202
declare 1 w 5209
to 67 w 5211
them 24 w 5215
the 122 w 5218
anger 3 w 5223
of 41 w 5225
the 123 w 5228
people 12 w 5234
of 42 w 5236
Jerusalem 4 w 5245
at 67 w 5247
what 5 w 5251
had 17 w 5254
been 4 w 5258
done 4 w 5262
by 10 w 5264
Jonathan 9 w 5272
and 56 w 5275
his 26 w 5278
colleagues 8 w 5288
and 57 w 5292
how 2 w 5295
much 1 w 5299
they 24 w 5303
hated 1 w 5308
their 12 w 5313
wicked 3 w 5319
doings 1 w 5325
and 58 w 5329
how 3 w 5332
they 25 w 5336
had 18 w 5339
confirmed 2 w 5348
me 54 w 5350
in 61 w 5352
the 127 w 5355
government 3 w 5365
of 43 w 5367
their 13 w 5372
country 1 w 5379
as 53 w 5382
also 5 w 5386
what 6 w 5390
related 1 w 5397
to 68 w 5399
the 129 w 5402
order 7 w 5407
they 26 w 5411
had 19 w 5414
in 62 w 5416
writing 1 w 5423
for 21 w 5426
Jonathan 10 w 5434
and 59 w 5437
his 27 w 5440
colleagues 9 w 5450
to 69 w 5452
return 3 w 5458
home 3 w 5462
So 4 w 5465
I 30 w 5466
immediately 1 w 5477
sent 8 w 5481
them 25 w 5485
the 132 w 5488
letter 4 w 5494
and 60 w 5498
bid 2 w 5501
him 7 w 5504
that 29 w 5508
carried 1 w 5515
it 31 w 5517
to 70 w 5519
inquire 2 w 5526
as 54 w 5529
well 4 w 5533
as 55 w 5535
he 174 w 5537
could 3 w 5542
how 4 w 5546
they 27 w 5550
intended 1 w 5558
to 71 w 5560
act 2 w 5563
on 62 w 5566
this 10 w 5570
occasion 1 w 5578
