When the multitude heard these things, they were greatly provoked at Jonathan, and his colleagues that were with him, and were going to attack them, and kill them; and this they had certainly done, unless I had restrained the anger of the Galileans, and said, that I forgave Jonathan and his colleagues what was past, if they would repent, and go to their own country, and tell those who sent them the truth, as to my conduct. When I had said this, I let them go, although I knew they would do nothing of what they had promised. But the multitude were very much enraged against them, and entreated me to give them leave to punish them for their insolence; yet did I try all methods to persuade them to spare the men; for I knew that every instance of sedition was pernicious to the public welfare. But the multitude was too angry with them to be dissuaded, and all of them went immediately to the house in which Jonathan and his colleagues abode. However, when I perceived that their rage could not be restrained, I got on horseback, and ordered the multitude to follow me to the village Sogane, which was twenty furlongs off Gabara; and by using this stratagem, I so managed myself, as not to appear to begin a civil war ,amongst them.

52

But when I was come near Sogane, I caused the multitude to make a halt, and exhorted them not to be so easily provoked to anger, and to the inflicting such punishments as could not be afterwards recalled: I also gave order, that a hundred men, who were already in years, and were principal men among them, should get themselves ready to go to the city of Jerusalem, and should .make a complaint before the people of such as raised seditions in the country. And I said to them, that in case they be moved with what you say, you shall desire the community to write to me, and to enjoin me to continue in Galilee, and to order Jonathan and his colleagues to depart out of it. When I had suggested these instructions to them, and while they were getting themselves ready as fast as they could, I sent them on this errand the third day after they had been assembled: I also sent five hundred armed men with them [as a guard]. I then wrote to my friends in Samaria, to take care that they might safely pass through the country: for Samaria was already under the Romans, and it was absolutely necessary for those that go quickly [to Jerusalem] to pass through that country; for in that road you may, in three days time, go from Galilee to Jerusalem. I also went myself, and conducted the old men as far as the bounds of Galilee, and set guards in the roads, that it might not be easily known by any one that these men were gone. And when I had thus done, I went and abode at Japha.

53

Now Jonathan and his colleagues, having failed of accomplishing what they would have done against me, sent John back to Gischala, but went themselves to the city of Tiberias, expecting it would submit itself to them; and this was founded on a letter which Jesus, their then governor, had written them, promising that, if they came, the multitude would receive them, and choose to be under their government; so they went their ways with this expectation. But Silas, who, as I said, had been left curator of Tiberias by me, informed me of this, and desired me to make haste thither. Accordingly, I complied with his advice immediately, and came thither; but found myself in danger of my life, from the following occasion: Jonathan and his colleagues had been at Tiberias, and had persuaded a great many of such as had a quarrel with me to desert me; but when they heard of my coming, they were in fear for themselves, and came to me; and when they had saluted me, they said, that I was a happy man in having behaved myself so well in the government of Galilee; and they congratulated me upon the honors that were paid me: for they said that my glory was a credit to them, since they had been my teachers and fellow citizens; and they said further, that it was but just that they should prefer my friendship to them rather than Johns, and that they would have immediately gone home, but that they staid that they might deliver up John into my power; and when they said this they took their oaths of it, and those such as are most tremendous amongst us, and such as I did not think fit to disbelieve. However, they desired me to lodge some where else, because the next day was the sabbath, and that it was not fit the city of Tiberias should be disturbed [on that day].

54

So I suspected nothing, and went away to Tarichese; yet did I withal leave some to make inquiry in the city how matters went, and whether any thing was said about me: I also set many persons all the way that led from Tarichese to Tiberias, that they might communicate from one to another, if they learned any news from those that were left in the city. On the next day, therefore, they all came into the Proseucha; [*] it was a large edifice, and capable of receiving a great number of people; thither Jonathan went in, and though he durst not openly speak of a revolt, yet did he say that their city stood in need of a better governor than it then had. But Jesus, who was the ruler, made no scruple to speak out, and said openly, O fellow citizens! it is better for you to be in subjection to four than to one; and those such as are of high birth, and not without reputation for their wisdom; and pointed to Jonathan and his colleagues. Upon his saying this, Justus came in and commended him for what he had said, and persuaded some of the people to be of his mind also. But the multitude were not pleased with what was said, and had certainly gone into a tumult, unless the sixth hour, which was now come, had dissolved the assembly, at which hour our laws require us to go to dinner on sabbath days; so Jonathan and his colleagues put off their council till the next day, and went off without success. When I was informed of these affairs, I determined to go to the city of Tiberias in the morning. Accordingly, on the next day, about the first hour of the day, I came from Tarichee, and found the multitude already assembled in the Proseucha; but on what account they were gotten together, those that were assembled did not know. But when Jonathan and his colleagues saw me there unexpectedly, they were in disorder; after which they raised a report of their own contrivance, that Roman horsemen were seen at a place called Union, in the borders of Galilee, thirty furlongs distant from the city. Upon which report, Jonathan and his colleagues cunningly exhorted me not to neglect this matter, nor to suffer the land to be spoiled by the enemy. And this they said with a design to remove me out of the city, under the pretense of the want of extraordinary assistance, while they might dispose the city to be my enemy.

55

As for myself, although I knew of their design, yet did I comply with what they proposed, lest the people of Tiberias should have occasion to suppose that I was not careful of their security. I therefore went out; but, when I was at the place, I found not the least footsteps of any enemy, so I returned as fast as ever I could, and found the whole council assembled, and the body of the people gotten together, and Jonathan and his colleagues bringing vehement accusations against me, as one who had no concern to ease them of the burdens of war, and as one that lived luxuriously. And as they were discoursing thus, they produced four letters, as written to them from some people that lived at the borders of Galilee, imploring that they would come to their assistance, for that there was an army of Romans, both horsemen and footmen, who would come and lay waste the country on the third day; they desired them also to make haste, and not to overlook them. When the people of Tiberias heard this, they thought they spake truth, and made a clamor against me, and said I ought not to sit still, but to go away to the assistance of their countrymen. Hereupon I said (for I understood the meaning of Jonathan and his colleagues) that I was ready to comply with what they proposed, and without delay to march to the war which they spake of, yet did I advise them, at the same time, that since these letters declared that the Romans would make their assault in four several places, they should part their forces into five bodies, and make Jonathan and his colleagues generals of each body of them, because it was fit for brave men, not only to give counsel, but to take the place of leaders, and assist their countrymen when such a necessity pressed them; for, said I, it is not possible for me to lead more than one party. This advice of mine greatly pleased the multitude; so they compelled them to go forth to the war. But their designs were put into very much disorder, because they had not done what they had designed to do, on account of my stratagem, which was opposite to their undertakings.

if 2 w 2473
they 12 w 2477
came 1 w 2481
the 68 w 2485
multitude 6 w 2494
would 5 w 2499

their 5 w 2534

so 8 w 2547
they 13 w 2551
went 6 w 2555
their 6 w 2560
ways 1 w 2564
with 5 w 2568
this 6 w 2572

But 4 w 2587
Silas 1 w 2592

informed 1 w 2646
me 22 w 2648
of 13 w 2650
this 7 w 2654

Accordingly 1 w 2697
I 23 w 2699
complied 1 w 2707
with 6 w 2711
his 13 w 2714
advice 1 w 2720
immediately 2 w 2731
and 31 w 2735
came 2 w 2739
thither 2 w 2746
but 2 w 2750
found 2 w 2755
myself 3 w 2761
in 36 w 2763
danger 1 w 2769
of 14 w 2771
my 6 w 2773
life 1 w 2777
from 2 w 2782
the 75 w 2785

Jonathan 6 w 2811
and 32 w 2814
his 14 w 2817

had 10 w 2830
been 3 w 2834
at 34 w 2836
Tiberias 3 w 2844
and 33 w 2848
had 11 w 2851

with 7 w 2893
me 26 w 2895

me 27 w 2905
but 3 w 2909
when 4 w 2913
they 14 w 2917
heard 2 w 2922
of 16 w 2924
my 7 w 2926
coming 1 w 2932
they 15 w 2937
were 9 w 2941
in 39 w 2943
fear 1 w 2947
for 9 w 2950
themselves 4 w 2960
and 34 w 2964
came 3 w 2968
to 42 w 2970
me 29 w 2972

when 5 w 2980
they 16 w 2984
had 13 w 2987
saluted 1 w 2994
me 30 w 2996
they 17 w 3001
said 5 w 3005
that 14 w 3010
I 24 w 3011
was 9 w 3014
a 263 w 3015
happy 1 w 3020
man 4 w 3023
in 40 w 3025
having 2 w 3031
behaved 1 w 3038
myself 4 w 3044
so 9 w 3046
well 1 w 3050
in 42 w 3052
the 81 w 3055
government 2 w 3065
of 17 w 3067
Galilee 4 w 3074
and 36 w 3078
they 18 w 3082
congratulated 1 w 3095
me 32 w 3097
upon 1 w 3101
the 83 w 3104
honors 1 w 3110
that 15 w 3114
were 10 w 3118
paid 1 w 3122
me 33 w 3124
for 10 w 3128
they 19 w 3132
said 6 w 3136
that 16 w 3140
my 9 w 3142
glory 1 w 3147
was 10 w 3150
a 277 w 3151
credit 1 w 3157
to 43 w 3159
them 25 w 3163
since 1 w 3169
they 20 w 3173
had 14 w 3176
been 4 w 3180
my 10 w 3182
teachers 1 w 3190
and 37 w 3193
fellow 1 w 3199
citizens 1 w 3207
and 38 w 3211
they 21 w 3215
said 7 w 3219
further 1 w 3226
that 17 w 3231
it 31 w 3233
was 11 w 3236
but 4 w 3239
just 1 w 3243
that 18 w 3247
they 22 w 3251
should 3 w 3257
prefer 1 w 3263
my 11 w 3265
friendship 1 w 3275
to 44 w 3277
them 26 w 3281
rather 1 w 3287
than 7 w 3291
John 2 w 3295
s 175 w 3297
and 39 w 3301
that 19 w 3305
they 23 w 3309
would 6 w 3314
have 3 w 3318
immediately 3 w 3329
gone 2 w 3333
home 1 w 3337
but 5 w 3341
that 20 w 3345
they 24 w 3349
staid 1 w 3354
that 21 w 3358
they 25 w 3362
might 3 w 3367
deliver 1 w 3374
up 2 w 3376
John 3 w 3380
into 1 w 3384
my 12 w 3386
power 1 w 3391
and 40 w 3395
when 6 w 3399
they 26 w 3403
said 8 w 3407
this 8 w 3411
they 27 w 3415
took 1 w 3419
their 7 w 3424
oaths 1 w 3429
of 18 w 3431
it 32 w 3433
and 41 w 3437
those 3 w 3442
such 4 w 3446
as 37 w 3448
are 4 w 3451
most 1 w 3455
tremendous 1 w 3465
amongst 2 w 3472
us 12 w 3474
and 42 w 3478
such 5 w 3482
as 38 w 3484
I 25 w 3485
did 2 w 3488
not 7 w 3491
think 1 w 3496
fit 1 w 3499
to 47 w 3501
disbelieve 1 w 3511
However 2 w 3519
they 28 w 3524
desired 2 w 3531
me 37 w 3533
to 48 w 3535
lodge 1 w 3540
some 1 w 3544
where 1 w 3549
else 1 w 3553
because 1 w 3561
the 99 w 3564
next 1 w 3568
day 3 w 3571
was 12 w 3574
the 100 w 3577
sabbath 1 w 3584
and 43 w 3588
that 22 w 3592
it 34 w 3594
was 13 w 3597
not 8 w 3600
fit 2 w 3603
the 101 w 3606

be 21 w 3628
disturbed 1 w 3637
on 31 w 3640
that 23 w 3644
day 4 w 3647
So 3 w 3651
I 26 w 3652
suspected 1 w 3661
nothing 2 w 3668
and 44 w 3672
went 7 w 3676
away 1 w 3680
to 49 w 3682
Tarichese 1 w 3691
yet 2 w 3695
did 3 w 3698
I 27 w 3699
withal 1 w 3705
leave 2 w 3710
some 2 w 3714
to 50 w 3716

in 48 w 3729
the 102 w 3732

how 1 w 3739

whether 1 w 3761

about 1 w 3781

to 51 w 3834
Tiberias 5 w 3842
that 25 w 3847
they 29 w 3851

if 4 w 3886
they 30 w 3890

any 5 w 3900

of 35 w 5147
these 4 w 5152

I 33 w 5259
came 6 w 5263
from 6 w 5267
Tarichee 1 w 5275
and 59 w 5279
found 3 w 5284
the 140 w 5287

already 3 w 5303
assembled 2 w 5312

lived 2 w 6449
at 86 w 6451

lay 1 w 6586

not 20 w 6652

the 183 w 6674

of 52 w 6682
Tiberias 9 w 6690
heard 3 w 6695
this 12 w 6699
they 42 w 6704
thought 1 w 6711
they 43 w 6715
spake 1 w 6720
truth 2 w 6725
and 71 w 6729
made 2 w 6733
a 542 w 6734
clamor 1 w 6740
against 4 w 6747
me 59 w 6749
and 72 w 6753
said 14 w 6757
I 42 w 6758
ought 2 w 6763
not 21 w 6766
to 82 w 6768
sit 1 w 6771
still 1 w 6776
but 8 w 6780
to 83 w 6782
go 20 w 6784
away 2 w 6788
to 84 w 6790
the 186 w 6793
assistance 3 w 6803
of 53 w 6805
their 16 w 6810
countrymen 1 w 6820
Hereupon 1 w 6829
I 43 w 6830
said 15 w 6834
for 19 w 6838
I 44 w 6839
understood 1 w 6849
the 188 w 6852
meaning 1 w 6859
of 54 w 6861
Jonathan 13 w 6869
and 73 w 6872
his 27 w 6875
colleagues 12 w 6885
that 38 w 6890
I 45 w 6891
was 25 w 6894
ready 6 w 6899
to 86 w 6901
comply 2 w 6907
with 15 w 6911
what 9 w 6915
they 44 w 6919
proposed 2 w 6927
and 74 w 6931
without 3 w 6938
delay 1 w 6943
to 87 w 6945
march 1 w 6950
to 88 w 6952
the 190 w 6955
war 4 w 6958
which 8 w 6963
they 45 w 6967
spake 2 w 6972
of 55 w 6974
yet 5 w 6978
did 7 w 6981
I 46 w 6982
advise 1 w 6988
them 33 w 6992
at 92 w 6995
the 193 w 6998
same 1 w 7002
time 2 w 7006
that 39 w 7011
since 2 w 7016
these 5 w 7021
letters 2 w 7028
declared 1 w 7036
that 40 w 7040
the 195 w 7043
Romans 3 w 7049
would 9 w 7054
make 6 w 7058
their 17 w 7063
assault 1 w 7070
in 87 w 7072
four 3 w 7076
several 1 w 7083
places 1 w 7089
they 46 w 7094
should 6 w 7100
part 2 w 7104
their 18 w 7109
forces 1 w 7115
into 4 w 7119
five 2 w 7123
bodies 1 w 7129
and 75 w 7133
make 7 w 7137
Jonathan 14 w 7145
and 76 w 7148
his 28 w 7151
colleagues 13 w 7161
generals 1 w 7169
of 56 w 7171
each 2 w 7175
body 2 w 7179
of 57 w 7181
them 34 w 7185
because 2 w 7193
it 66 w 7195
was 26 w 7198
fit 3 w 7201
for 21 w 7204
brave 1 w 7209
men 17 w 7212
not 22 w 7216
only 1 w 7220
to 90 w 7222
give 2 w 7226
counsel 1 w 7233
but 9 w 7237
to 91 w 7239
take 2 w 7243
the 200 w 7246
place 5 w 7251
of 58 w 7253
leaders 1 w 7260
and 77 w 7264
assist 4 w 7270
their 19 w 7275
countrymen 2 w 7285
when 9 w 7289
such 8 w 7293
a 596 w 7294
necessity 1 w 7303
pressed 1 w 7310
them 35 w 7314
for 22 w 7318
said 16 w 7323
I 47 w 7324
it 69 w 7327
is 55 w 7329
not 23 w 7332
possible 1 w 7340
for 23 w 7343
me 66 w 7345
to 92 w 7347
lead 2 w 7351
more 1 w 7355
than 18 w 7359
one 12 w 7362
party 1 w 7367
This 1 w 7372
advice 2 w 7378
of 59 w 7380
mine 2 w 7384
greatly 2 w 7391
pleased 2 w 7398
the 203 w 7401
multitude 9 w 7410
so 24 w 7413
they 47 w 7417
compelled 1 w 7426
them 36 w 7430
to 93 w 7432
go 21 w 7434
forth 1 w 7439
to 94 w 7441
the 206 w 7444
war 5 w 7447
But 8 w 7451
their 20 w 7456
designs 1 w 7463
were 19 w 7467
put 3 w 7470
into 5 w 7474
very 3 w 7478
much 2 w 7482
disorder 2 w 7490
because 3 w 7498
they 48 w 7502
had 20 w 7505
not 24 w 7508
done 4 w 7512
what 10 w 7516

had 21 w 7523
designed 1 w 7531
to 96 w 7533
do 8 w 7535
on 67 w 7538
account 2 w 7545
of 60 w 7547
my 19 w 7549
stratagem 2 w 7558
which 9 w 7564
