Lycinus Now, can you tell me the difference between setting and sitting,’ or between be seated and sit’?

Purist No; but I have heard you say that sit yourself is a barbarism,;

Lycinus Yes, quite so; but now I tell you that be seated is not the same as sit.’

Purist Why, what may the difference be?

Lycinus When a man is on his legs, you can only tell him to be seated; but if he is seated already, you can tell him to sit still.

v.4.p.190
Sit where thou art; we find us seats: elsewhere. It means remain sitting,’ you see. Here again we have to say that it is a mistake to reverse the expressions. And as to set and sit,’ surely it is the whole difference between transitive and intransitive?

Purist That is clear enough; go on; this is the way to teach.

Lycinus Or the only way you can learn? Well, do you know what a historian is? [*]

Purist Oh, yes, I quite see, after your lucid explanation.

Lycinus Now I daresay you think servility and servitude are the same; but I am aware of a considerable difference between them.

Purist Namely—?

Lycinus The first depends on yourself, the other on some one else.

Purist Quite right.

Lycinus Oh, you will pick up all sorts of information, if you give up thinking you know more than you do.

Purist I give it up from this moment.

Lycinus Then we will break off for the present, and take the rest another time H. and

Lycinus 1 w 7
Now 1 w 10
can 1 w 14
you 1 w 17
tell 1 w 21
me 1 w 23
the 1 w 26
difference 1 w 36
between 1 w 43
setting 1 w 51
and 1 w 55
sitting 1 w 63
or 1 w 67
between 2 w 74
be 3 w 77
seated 1 w 83
and 2 w 87
sit 2 w 91
Purist 1 w 99
No 2 w 101
but 1 w 105
I 1 w 106
have 1 w 110
heard 1 w 115
you 2 w 118
say 1 w 121
that 1 w 125
sit 3 w 129
yourself 1 w 137
is 2 w 140
a 9 w 141
barbarism 1 w 150
Lycinus 2 w 159
Yes 1 w 162
quite 1 w 168
so 1 w 170
but 2 w 174
now 1 w 177
I 2 w 178
tell 2 w 182
you 4 w 185
that 2 w 189
be 4 w 192
seated 2 w 198
is 4 w 201
not 1 w 204
the 2 w 207
same 1 w 211
as 1 w 213
sit 4 w 217
Purist 2 w 225
Why 1 w 228
what 1 w 233
may 1 w 236
the 3 w 239
difference 2 w 249
be 5 w 251
Lycinus 3 w 259
When 1 w 263
a 18 w 264
man 1 w 267
is 6 w 269
on 1 w 271
his 1 w 274
legs 1 w 278
you 5 w 282
can 2 w 285
only 1 w 289
tell 3 w 293
him 1 w 296
to 1 w 298
be 6 w 300
seated 3 w 306
but 3 w 310
if 3 w 312
he 6 w 314
is 8 w 316
seated 4 w 322
already 1 w 329
you 6 w 333
can 3 w 336
tell 4 w 340
him 2 w 343
to 2 w 345
sit 5 w 348
still 1 w 353
Sit 1 w 357
where 1 w 362
thou 1 w 366
art 1 w 369
we 3 w 372
find 1 w 376
us 4 w 378
seats 1 w 383
elsewhere 1 w 393
It 1 w 396
means 1 w 401
remain 1 w 408
sitting 2 w 415
you 7 w 420
see 1 w 423
Here 1 w 428
again 1 w 433
we 4 w 435
have 2 w 439
to 3 w 441
say 2 w 444
that 3 w 448
it 9 w 450
is 9 w 452
a 35 w 453
mistake 1 w 460
to 4 w 462
reverse 1 w 469
the 4 w 472
expressions 1 w 483
And 1 w 487
as 2 w 489
to 5 w 491
set 2 w 495
and 3 w 499
sit 7 w 503
surely 1 w 511
it 11 w 513
is 11 w 515
the 5 w 518
whole 1 w 523
difference 3 w 533
between 3 w 540
transitive 1 w 550
and 4 w 553
intransitive 1 w 565
Purist 3 w 572
That 1 w 576
is 13 w 578
clear 1 w 583
enough 1 w 589
go 1 w 592
on 4 w 594
this 1 w 599
is 15 w 601
the 6 w 604
way 1 w 607
to 6 w 609
teach 1 w 614
Lycinus 4 w 622
Or 1 w 624
the 7 w 627
only 2 w 631
way 2 w 634
you 8 w 637
can 4 w 640
learn 1 w 645
Well 1 w 650
do 1 w 653
you 9 w 656
know 1 w 660
what 2 w 664
a 50 w 665
historian 1 w 674
is 17 w 676
The 1 w 680
explanation 1 w 691
of 1 w 693
this 2 w 697
point 1 w 702
appears 1 w 709
to 8 w 711
have 3 w 715
dropped 1 w 722
out 1 w 725
of 2 w 727
the 8 w 730
MSS 1 w 733
Translators 1 w 746
Purist 4 w 753
Oh 1 w 755
yes 1 w 759
I 4 w 761
quite 2 w 766
see 2 w 769
after 1 w 775
your 2 w 779
lucid 1 w 784
explanation 2 w 795
Lycinus 5 w 803
Now 2 w 806
I 5 w 807
daresay 1 w 814
you 11 w 817
think 1 w 822
servility 1 w 831
and 5 w 834
servitude 1 w 843
are 2 w 846
the 9 w 849
same 2 w 853
but 4 w 857
I 6 w 858
am 3 w 860
aware 1 w 865
of 3 w 867
a 70 w 868
considerable 1 w 880
difference 4 w 890
between 4 w 897
them 1 w 901
Purist 5 w 908
Namely 1 w 914
Lycinus 6 w 923
The 2 w 926
first 1 w 931
depends 1 w 938
on 9 w 940
yourself 2 w 948
the 11 w 952
other 1 w 957
on 10 w 959
some 1 w 963
one 1 w 966
else 2 w 970
Purist 6 w 977
Quite 1 w 982
right 1 w 987
Lycinus 7 w 995
Oh 2 w 997
you 13 w 1001
will 1 w 1005
pick 1 w 1009
up 1 w 1011
all 1 w 1014
sorts 1 w 1019
of 4 w 1021
information 1 w 1032
if 6 w 1035
you 14 w 1038
give 1 w 1042
up 2 w 1044
thinking 1 w 1052
you 15 w 1055
know 2 w 1059
more 1 w 1063
than 1 w 1067
you 16 w 1070
do 2 w 1072
Purist 7 w 1079
I 7 w 1080
give 2 w 1084
it 18 w 1086
up 3 w 1088
from 1 w 1092
this 3 w 1096
moment 1 w 1102
Lycinus 8 w 1110
Then 1 w 1114
we 7 w 1116
will 2 w 1120
break 1 w 1125
off 1 w 1128
for 2 w 1131
the 13 w 1134
present 1 w 1141
and 6 w 1145
take 2 w 1149
the 14 w 1152
rest 1 w 1156
another 1 w 1163
time 1 w 1167
H 2 w 1168
and 7 w 1172
