Come, I see you need enlightenment; I will show you how lamentation ought to be done. Makea fresh start, thus: Alas, my son! Hunger and thirst and cold are his no longer! He is gone, gone beyond the reach of sickness; he fears not fever any more, nor enemies nor tyrants. Never again, my son, shall love disturb your peace, impair your health, make hourly inroads on your purse; oh, heavy change! Never can you reach contemptible old age, never be an eyesore to your juniors!—

Confess, now, that my lamentation has the advantage of yours, in veracity, as in absurdity.

Perhaps it is the pitchy darkness of the infernal regions that runs in your head? is that the trouble? Are you afraid I shall be suffocated in the confinement of the tomb? You should reflect that my eyes will presently decay, or (if such is your good pleasure) be consumed with fire; after which I shall have no occasion to notice either light or darkness. However, let that pass.

But all this lamentation, now; this fluting

and beating of breasts; these wholly disproportionate wailings: how am I the better for it all? And what do I want with a garlanded column over my grave? And what good do you suppose you are going to do by pouring wine on it? do you expect it to filter through all the way to Hades? As to the victims, you must surely see for yourselves that all the solid nutriment is whisked away heavenwards in the form of smoke, leaving us Shades precisely as we were; the residue, being dust, is useless; or is it your theory that Shades batten on ashes? Plutos realm is not so barren, nor asphodel so scarce with us, that we must apply to you for provisions.—What with this winding-sheet and these woollen bandages, my jaws have been effectually sealed up, or, by Tisiphone, I should have burst out laughing long before this at the stuff you talk and the things you do.’

And at the word Death sealed his lips for ever.

Thus far our corpse, leaning on one side, supported on an elbow. Can we doubt that he is in the right of it? And yet these simpletons, not content with their own noise, must call in professional assistance: an artist in grief, with a fine repertoire of cut-and-dried sorrows at his command, assumes the direction of this inane choir, and supplies a theme for their woful acclamations.

the 4 w 502

that 4 w 629
my 4 w 631

But 1 w 784
all 4 w 787
this 1 w 791
lamentation 3 w 802

this 2 w 811
fluting 1 w 818

beating 1 w 828
of 5 w 830

these 1 w 843
wholly 1 w 849
disproportionate 1 w 865
wailings 1 w 873
how 3 w 877

I 5 w 880

for 1 w 892
it 7 w 894

And 1 w 901
what 1 w 905
do 2 w 907
I 6 w 908
want 1 w 912
with 2 w 916
a 70 w 917
garlanded 1 w 926

over 1 w 936
my 5 w 938

suppose 1 w 967
you 13 w 970
are 2 w 973
going 1 w 978
to 5 w 980
do 4 w 982
by 1 w 984
pouring 1 w 991
wine 1 w 995
on 19 w 997
it 9 w 999
do 5 w 1002
you 14 w 1005
expect 1 w 1011
it 10 w 1013
to 6 w 1015
filter 1 w 1021
through 1 w 1028
all 6 w 1031
the 11 w 1034
way 1 w 1037
to 7 w 1039
Hades 1 w 1044
As 1 w 1047
to 8 w 1049
the 12 w 1052
victims 1 w 1059
you 15 w 1063
must 1 w 1067
surely 1 w 1073
see 2 w 1076
for 2 w 1079
yourselves 1 w 1089
that 6 w 1093
all 7 w 1096
the 13 w 1099
solid 1 w 1104
nutriment 1 w 1113
is 10 w 1115
whisked 1 w 1122
away 1 w 1126
heavenwards 1 w 1137
in 15 w 1139
the 14 w 1142
form 1 w 1146
of 6 w 1148
smoke 1 w 1153
leaving 1 w 1161
us 3 w 1163
Shades 1 w 1169
precisely 1 w 1178
as 8 w 1180
we 2 w 1182
were 1 w 1186
the 15 w 1190
residue 1 w 1197
being 1 w 1203
dust 1 w 1207
is 13 w 1210
useless 1 w 1217
or 12 w 1220
is 14 w 1222
it 11 w 1224
your 9 w 1228
theory 1 w 1234
that 7 w 1238
Shades 2 w 1244
batten 1 w 1250
on 20 w 1252
ashes 1 w 1257
Pluto 1 w 1263
s 88 w 1265
realm 1 w 1270
is 15 w 1272
not 3 w 1275
so 5 w 1277
barren 1 w 1283
nor 3 w 1287
asphodel 1 w 1295
so 6 w 1297
scarce 1 w 1303
with 3 w 1307
us 6 w 1309
that 8 w 1314
we 4 w 1316
must 2 w 1320
apply 1 w 1325
to 10 w 1327
you 18 w 1330
for 4 w 1333
provisions 1 w 1343
What 1 w 1349
with 4 w 1353
this 3 w 1357
winding-sheet 1 w 1370
and 5 w 1373
these 2 w 1378
woollen 1 w 1385
bandages 1 w 1393
my 6 w 1396
jaws 1 w 1400
have 2 w 1404
been 1 w 1408
effectually 1 w 1419
sealed 1 w 1425
up 2 w 1427
or 16 w 1430
by 2 w 1433
Tisiphone 1 w 1442
I 7 w 1444
should 2 w 1450
have 3 w 1454
burst 1 w 1459
out 1 w 1462
laughing 1 w 1470
long 2 w 1474
before 1 w 1480
this 4 w 1484
at 19 w 1486
the 18 w 1489
stuff 1 w 1494
you 19 w 1497
talk 1 w 1501
and 7 w 1504
the 19 w 1507
things 1 w 1513
you 20 w 1516
do 6 w 1518
And 3 w 1523
at 20 w 1525
the 20 w 1528
word 1 w 1532
Death 1 w 1537
sealed 2 w 1543
his 7 w 1546
lips 1 w 1550
for 6 w 1553
ever 6 w 1557
Thus 1 w 1562
far 1 w 1565
our 12 w 1568
corpse 1 w 1574
leaning 1 w 1582
on 24 w 1584
one 5 w 1587
side 1 w 1591
supported 1 w 1601
on 26 w 1603
an 16 w 1605
elbow 1 w 1610
Can 1 w 1614
we 5 w 1616
doubt 1 w 1621
that 9 w 1625
he 28 w 1627
is 21 w 1629
in 23 w 1631
the 21 w 1634
right 1 w 1639
of 7 w 1641
it 14 w 1643
And 4 w 1647
yet 1 w 1650
these 3 w 1655
simpletons 1 w 1665
not 4 w 1669
content 1 w 1676
with 5 w 1680
their 1 w 1685
own 1 w 1688
noise 1 w 1693
must 3 w 1698
call 1 w 1702
in 24 w 1704
professional 1 w 1716
assistance 1 w 1726
an 19 w 1729
artist 1 w 1735
in 25 w 1737
grief 1 w 1742
with 6 w 1747
a 125 w 1748
fine 2 w 1752
repertoire 1 w 1762
of 9 w 1764
cut-and-dried 1 w 1777
sorrows 1 w 1784
at 23 w 1786
his 8 w 1789
command 1 w 1796
assumes 1 w 1804
the 24 w 1807
direction 1 w 1816
of 10 w 1818
this 5 w 1822
inane 1 w 1827
choir 1 w 1832
and 10 w 1836
supplies 1 w 1844
a 132 w 1845
theme 1 w 1850
for 7 w 1853
their 2 w 1858
