Soc.

Certainly, I said: the former mine,
298
298a
the latter his.
Then surely,
he went on,
Chaeredemus was other than father?
Than mine, at any rate, I said.
Why then, he was father while being other than father. Or are you the same as the stone?
[*]
I fear you may prove that of me, I said, though I do not feel like it.
Then are you other than the stone?
Other, I must say.
Then of course,
he went on,
if you are other than stone, you are not stone? And if you are other than gold, you are not gold?
Quite so.
Hence Chaeredemus,
he said,
being other than father,
298b
cannot be father.
It seems, I said, that he is not a father.
No, for I presume,
interposed Euthydemus,
that if Chaeredemus is a father Sophroniscus in his turn, being other than a father, is not a father; so that you, Socrates, are fatherless.
Here Ctesippus took it up, observing:
And your father too, is he not in just the same plight? Is he other than my father?
Not in the slightest
, said Euthydemus.
What,
asked the other,
is he the same?
The same, to be sure.
I should not like to think he was: but tell me, Euthydemus,
298c
is he my father only, or everybody elses too?
Everybody elses too,
he replied;
or do you suppose that the same man, being a father, can be no father?
I did suppose so,
said Ctesippus.
Well,
said the other,
and that a thing being gold could be not gold? Or being a man, not man?
Perhaps, Euthydemus,
said Ctesippus,
you are knotting flax with cotton,[*] as they say: for it is a strange result that you state, if your father is father of all.
He is, though,
was the reply.
Of all men, do you mean?
asked Ctesippus,
or of horses too,
298d
and all other animals?
Of all,
he said.
And is your mother a mother in the same way?
My mother too.
And is your mother a mother of sea-urchins?
Yes, and yours is also,
he replied.
So then you are a brother of the gudgeons and whelps and porkers.
Yes, and so are you,
he said.
Then your father is a boar and a dog.
And so is yours,
he said.
Yes,
said Dionysodorus,
and it will take you but a moment, if you will answer me, Ctesippus, to acknowledge all this. Just tell me, have you a dog?
Yes, a real rogue,
said Ctesippus.
298e
Has he got puppies?
Yes, a set of rogues like him.
Then is the dog their father?
Yes, indeed; I saw him with my own eyes covering the bitch.
Well now, is not the dog yours?
Certainly,
he said.
Thus he is a father, and yours, and accordingly the dog turns out to be your father, and you a brother of whelps.
Hereupon Dionysodorus struck in again quickly, lest Ctesippus should get a word in before him:
Answer me just one more little point: do you beat this dog?
Ctesippus laughed and said:
My word, yes; since I cannot beat you!
So you beat your own father?
299
299a
he said.

Soc.

There would be much more justice, though,
he replied,
in my beating yours, for being so ill-advised as to beget clever sons like you. Yet I doubt,
Ctesippus went on,
if your father, Euthydemusthe puppies fatherhas derived much good from this wisdom of yours.
Why, he has no need of much good, Ctesippus, neither he nor you.
And have you no need either, yourself, Euthydemus?
he asked.
No, nor has any other man. Just tell me, Ctesippus,
299b
whether you think it good for a sick man to drink physic when he wants it, or whether you consider it not good; or for a man to go to the wars with arms rather than without them.
With them, I think,
he replied:
and yet I believe you are about to utter one of your pleasantries.
You will gather that well enough,
he said:
only answer me. Since you admit that physic is good for a man to drink when necessary, surely one ought to drink this good thing as much as possible; and in such a case it will be well to pound and infuse in it a cart-load of hellebore?
To this Ctesippus replied:
Quite so,
299c
to be sure, Euthydemus, at any rate if the drinker is as big as the Delphian statue.
Then, further, since in war,
he proceeded,
it is good to have arms, one ought to have as many spears and shields as possible, if we agree that it is a good thing?
Yes, I suppose,
said Ctesippus;
and you, Euthydemus, do you take the other view, that it should be one shield and one spear?
Yes, I do.
What,
he said,
and would you arm Geryon also and Briareus[*] in this way? I thought you more of an expert than that, considering you are a man-at-arms, and your comrade here too!
At this Euthydemus was silent; then Dionysodorus
299d
asked some questions on Ctesippus previous answers, saying:
Well now, gold is in your opinion a good thing to have?
Certainly, andhere I agreeplenty of it too,
said Ctesippus.
Well then, do you not think it right to have good things always and everywhere?
Assuredly,
he said.
Then do you admit that gold is also a good?
Why, I have admitted it,
he replied.
Then we ought always to have it, and everywhere, and above all, in oneself?
299e
And one will be happiest if one has three talents of gold in ones belly, a talent in ones skull, and a stater of gold in each eye?
Well, Euthydemus,
replied Ctesippus,
they say that among the Scythians those are the happiest and best men who have a lot of gold in their own skullssomewhat as you were saying a moment ago that dog is father; and a still more marvellous thing is told, how they drink out of their skulls when gilded, and gaze inside them, holding their own headpiece in their hands.

as 13 w 2397
to 17 w 2399
beget 1 w 2404
clever 1 w 2410
sons 1 w 2414
like 4 w 2418
you 34 w 2421
Yet 1 w 2425
I 15 w 2426
doubt 1 w 2431
Ctesippus 9 w 2441
went 3 w 2445
on 17 w 2447
if 9 w 2450
your 13 w 2454
father 23 w 2460
Euthydemus 5 w 2471
the 67 w 2475
puppies 2 w 2482
father 24 w 2489
has 1 w 2493
derived 1 w 2500
much 2 w 2504
good 1 w 2508
from 1 w 2512
this 3 w 2516
wisdom 1 w 2522
of 11 w 2524
yours 6 w 2529
Why 2 w 2533
he 100 w 2536
has 2 w 2539
no 17 w 2541
need 1 w 2545
of 12 w 2547
much 3 w 2551
good 2 w 2555
Ctesippus 10 w 2565
neither 1 w 2573
he 102 w 2575
nor 1 w 2578
you 37 w 2581
And 6 w 2585
have 2 w 2589
you 38 w 2592
no 19 w 2594
need 2 w 2598
either 2 w 2604
yourself 1 w 2613
Euthydemus 6 w 2624
he 104 w 2627
asked 3 w 2632
No 3 w 2635
nor 2 w 2639
has 3 w 2642
any 2 w 2645
other 19 w 2650
man 4 w 2653
Just 2 w 2658
tell 3 w 2662
me 18 w 2664
Ctesippus 11 w 2674
whether 1 w 2682
you 40 w 2685
think 2 w 2690
it 13 w 2692
good 3 w 2696
for 6 w 2699
a 188 w 2700
sick 1 w 2704
man 5 w 2707
to 18 w 2709
drink 1 w 2714
physic 1 w 2720
when 1 w 2724
he 109 w 2726
wants 1 w 2731
it 14 w 2733
or 23 w 2736
whether 2 w 2743
you 41 w 2746
consider 1 w 2754
it 15 w 2756
not 14 w 2759
good 4 w 2763
or 24 w 2766
for 7 w 2769
a 191 w 2770
man 6 w 2773
to 19 w 2775
go 10 w 2777
to 20 w 2779
the 74 w 2782
wars 1 w 2786
with 4 w 2790
arms 1 w 2794
rather 1 w 2800
than 9 w 2804
without 2 w 2811
them 1 w 2815
With 1 w 2820
them 2 w 2824
I 16 w 2826
think 3 w 2831
he 116 w 2834
replied 4 w 2841
and 13 w 2845
yet 1 w 2848
I 17 w 2849
believe 1 w 2856
you 42 w 2859
are 11 w 2862
about 1 w 2867
to 21 w 2869
utter 1 w 2874
one 7 w 2877
of 13 w 2879
your 16 w 2883
pleasantries 1 w 2895
You 1 w 2899
will 3 w 2903
gather 1 w 2909
that 8 w 2913
well 1 w 2917
enough 1 w 2923
he 118 w 2926
said 18 w 2930
only 2 w 2935
answer 2 w 2941
me 19 w 2943
Since 1 w 2949
you 44 w 2952
admit 1 w 2957
that 9 w 2961
physic 2 w 2967
is 27 w 2969
good 5 w 2973
for 8 w 2976
a 208 w 2977
man 7 w 2980
to 22 w 2982
drink 2 w 2987
when 2 w 2991
necessary 1 w 3000
surely 2 w 3007
one 8 w 3010
ought 1 w 3015
to 23 w 3017
drink 3 w 3022
this 4 w 3026
good 6 w 3030
thing 3 w 3035
as 19 w 3037
much 4 w 3041
as 20 w 3043
possible 1 w 3051
and 14 w 3055
in 42 w 3057
such 1 w 3061
a 214 w 3062
case 1 w 3066
it 20 w 3068
will 4 w 3072
be 21 w 3074
well 2 w 3078
to 24 w 3080
pound 1 w 3085
and 15 w 3088
infuse 1 w 3094
in 44 w 3096
it 21 w 3098
a 217 w 3099
cart-load 1 w 3108
of 14 w 3110
hellebore 1 w 3119
To 1 w 3122
this 5 w 3126
Ctesippus 12 w 3135
replied 5 w 3142
Quite 2 w 3148
so 11 w 3150
to 25 w 3153
be 22 w 3155
sure 5 w 3159
Euthydemus 7 w 3170
at 48 w 3173
any 3 w 3176
rate 3 w 3180
if 10 w 3182
the 79 w 3185
drinker 1 w 3192
is 30 w 3194
as 22 w 3196
big 1 w 3199
as 23 w 3201
the 80 w 3204
Delphian 1 w 3212
statue 1 w 3218
Then 6 w 3223
further 1 w 3231
since 2 w 3237
in 47 w 3239
war 2 w 3242
he 125 w 3245
proceeded 1 w 3254
it 23 w 3257
is 31 w 3259
good 7 w 3263
to 26 w 3265
have 3 w 3269
arms 2 w 3273
one 9 w 3277
ought 2 w 3282
to 27 w 3284
have 4 w 3288
as 24 w 3290
many 1 w 3294
spears 1 w 3300
and 16 w 3303
shields 1 w 3310
as 25 w 3312
possible 2 w 3320
if 11 w 3323
we 9 w 3325
agree 1 w 3330
that 10 w 3334
it 24 w 3336
is 32 w 3338
a 238 w 3339
good 8 w 3343
thing 4 w 3348
Yes 7 w 3352
I 18 w 3354
suppose 3 w 3361
said 19 w 3366
Ctesippus 13 w 3375
and 17 w 3379
you 45 w 3382
Euthydemus 8 w 3393
do 15 w 3396
you 46 w 3399
take 2 w 3403
the 82 w 3406
other 20 w 3411
view 1 w 3415
that 11 w 3420
it 25 w 3422
should 3 w 3428
be 23 w 3430
one 10 w 3433
shield 2 w 3439
and 18 w 3442
one 11 w 3445
spear 2 w 3450
Yes 8 w 3454
I 19 w 3456
do 16 w 3458
What 2 w 3463
he 128 w 3466
said 20 w 3470
and 19 w 3474
would 2 w 3479
you 47 w 3482
arm 3 w 3485
Geryon 1 w 3491
also 2 w 3495
and 20 w 3498
Briareus 1 w 3506
Two 1 w 3509
fabulous 1 w 3517
giants 1 w 3523
Geryon 2 w 3530
had 1 w 3533
three 1 w 3538
Briareus 2 w 3547
fifty 1 w 3552
pairs 1 w 3558
of 15 w 3560
arms 3 w 3564
in 49 w 3568
this 6 w 3572
way 2 w 3575
I 20 w 3577
thought 1 w 3584
you 48 w 3587
more 3 w 3591
of 16 w 3593
an 54 w 3595
expert 1 w 3601
than 10 w 3605
that 12 w 3609
considering 1 w 3621
you 49 w 3624
are 14 w 3627
a 263 w 3628
man-at-arms 1 w 3639
and 21 w 3643
your 17 w 3647
comrade 1 w 3654
here 3 w 3658
too 7 w 3661
At 1 w 3664
this 7 w 3668
Euthydemus 9 w 3678
was 5 w 3681
silent 1 w 3687
then 3 w 3692
Dionysodorus 3 w 3704
asked 4 w 3709
some 1 w 3713
questions 1 w 3722
on 30 w 3724
Ctesippus 14 w 3733
previous 1 w 3742
answers 1 w 3749
saying 1 w 3756
Well 3 w 3761
now 3 w 3764
gold 5 w 3769
is 35 w 3771
in 52 w 3773
your 18 w 3777
opinion 1 w 3784
a 273 w 3785
good 9 w 3789
thing 5 w 3794
to 29 w 3796
have 5 w 3800
Certainly 3 w 3810
and 22 w 3814
here 4 w 3819
I 21 w 3820
agree 2 w 3825
plenty 1 w 3832
of 17 w 3834
it 26 w 3836
too 8 w 3839
said 21 w 3844
Ctesippus 15 w 3853
Well 4 w 3858
then 4 w 3862
do 18 w 3865
you 52 w 3868
not 15 w 3871
think 4 w 3876
it 27 w 3878
right 1 w 3883
to 31 w 3885
have 6 w 3889
good 10 w 3893
things 2 w 3899
always 1 w 3905
and 23 w 3908
everywhere 1 w 3918
Assuredly 1 w 3928
he 134 w 3931
said 22 w 3935
Then 7 w 3940
do 19 w 3942
you 53 w 3945
admit 2 w 3950
that 13 w 3954
gold 6 w 3958
is 36 w 3960
also 3 w 3964
a 287 w 3965
good 11 w 3969
Why 3 w 3973
I 22 w 3975
have 7 w 3979
admitted 1 w 3987
it 30 w 3989
he 136 w 3992
replied 6 w 3999
Then 8 w 4004
we 11 w 4006
ought 4 w 4011
always 2 w 4017
to 32 w 4019
have 8 w 4023
it 31 w 4025
and 24 w 4029
everywhere 2 w 4039
and 25 w 4043
above 1 w 4048
all 6 w 4051
in 58 w 4054
oneself 1 w 4061
And 7 w 4065
one 13 w 4068
will 5 w 4072
be 24 w 4074
happiest 1 w 4082
if 13 w 4084
one 14 w 4087

in 61 w 4159
each 1 w 4163

Well 5 w 4171
Euthydemus 10 w 4182
replied 7 w 4190
Ctesippus 16 w 4199
they 2 w 4204
say 4 w 4207
that 14 w 4211
among 1 w 4216
the 87 w 4219

a 318 w 4315
moment 2 w 4321
