First of all, as Prodicus says, you have to learn about the correct use of wordsthe very point that our two visitors are making plain to you, namely, that you were unaware that learning is the name which people apply on the one hand to the case of a man who, having originally no knowledge about some matter, in course of time receives such knowledge;

278
278a
and on the other hand the same word is applied when, having the knowledge already, he uses that knowledge for the investigation of the same matter whether occurring in action or in speech. It is true that they tend rather to call it understanding than learning, but occasionally they call it learning too; and this point, as our friends are demonstrating, has escaped your noticehow the same word is used for people who are in the opposite conditions of knowing and not knowing. A similar point underlay the second question, where they asked you
278b
whether people learn what they know, or what they do not. Such things are the sport of the sciencesand that is why I tell you these men are making game of you; I call it sport because, although one were to learn many or even all of such tricks, one would be not a whit the wiser as to the true state of the matters in hand, but only able to make game of people, thanks to the difference in the sense of the words, by tripping them up and overturning them; just as those who slyly pull stools away from persons who are about to sit down
278c
make merry and laugh when they see one sprawling on ones back. So far, then, you are to regard these gentlemens treatment of you as mere play: but after this they will doubtless display to you their own serious object, while I shall keep them on the track and see that they fulfil the promise they gave me. They said they would exhibit their skill in exhortation; but instead, I conceive, they thought fit to make sport with you first. So now, Euthydemus and Dionysodorus,
278d
let us have done with your sport: I daresay you have had as much as you want. What you have next to do is to give us a display of exhorting this youth as to how he should devote himself to wisdom and virtue. But first I shall explain to you how I regard this matter and how I desire to hear it dealt with. If I strike you as treating it in a crude and ridiculous manner, do not laugh me to scorn; for in my eagerness
278e
to listen to your wisdom I shall venture to improvise in your presence. So both you and your disciples must restrain yourselves and listen without laughing; and you, son of Axiochus, answer me this:
Do all we human beings wish to prosper? Or is this question one of the absurdities I was afraid of just now? For I suppose it is stupid merely to ask such things, since every man must wish to prosper.

far 1 w 1231
then 1 w 1236
you 8 w 1240
are 8 w 1243

regard 1 w 1251
these 2 w 1256

them 3 w 1374
on 19 w 1376
the 40 w 1379

and 11 w 1387
see 2 w 1390
that 7 w 1394
they 8 w 1398
fulfil 1 w 1404
the 42 w 1407
promise 1 w 1414
they 9 w 1418
gave 1 w 1422
me 15 w 1424
They 1 w 1429
said 1 w 1433
they 10 w 1437
would 2 w 1442
exhibit 1 w 1449
their 2 w 1454
skill 1 w 1459
in 29 w 1461
exhortation 1 w 1472
but 4 w 1476
instead 1 w 1483
I 5 w 1485
conceive 1 w 1493
they 11 w 1498
thought 1 w 1505
fit 1 w 1508
to 15 w 1510
make 3 w 1514
sport 3 w 1519
with 1 w 1523
you 11 w 1526
first 1 w 1531
So 3 w 1534
now 8 w 1537
Euthydemus 1 w 1548
and 12 w 1551
Dionysodorus 1 w 1563
let 1 w 1567
us 10 w 1569
have 2 w 1573
done 1 w 1577
with 2 w 1581
your 2 w 1585
sport 4 w 1590
I 6 w 1592
daresay 1 w 1599
you 13 w 1602
have 3 w 1606
had 1 w 1609
as 10 w 1611
much 1 w 1615
as 11 w 1617
you 14 w 1620
want 1 w 1624
What 1 w 1629
you 15 w 1632
have 4 w 1636
next 1 w 1640
to 16 w 1642
do 6 w 1644
is 12 w 1646
to 17 w 1648
give 1 w 1652
us 11 w 1654
a 124 w 1655
display 2 w 1662
of 14 w 1664
exhorting 1 w 1673
this 3 w 1677
youth 1 w 1682
as 12 w 1684
to 18 w 1686
how 2 w 1689
he 54 w 1691
should 1 w 1697
devote 1 w 1703
himself 1 w 1710
to 19 w 1712
wisdom 1 w 1718
and 13 w 1721
virtue 1 w 1727
But 1 w 1731
first 2 w 1736
I 7 w 1737
shall 2 w 1742
explain 1 w 1749
to 20 w 1751
you 17 w 1754
how 3 w 1757
I 8 w 1758
regard 2 w 1764
this 4 w 1768
matter 4 w 1774
and 14 w 1777
how 4 w 1780
I 9 w 1781
desire 1 w 1787
to 21 w 1789
hear 1 w 1793
it 13 w 1795
dealt 1 w 1800
with 3 w 1804
If 1 w 1807
I 11 w 1808
strike 1 w 1814
you 18 w 1817
as 13 w 1819
treating 1 w 1827
it 15 w 1829
in 34 w 1831
a 137 w 1832
crude 1 w 1837
and 15 w 1840
ridiculous 1 w 1850
manner 1 w 1856
do 8 w 1859
not 5 w 1862
laugh 2 w 1867
me 16 w 1869
to 22 w 1871
scorn 1 w 1876
for 3 w 1880
in 35 w 1882
my 1 w 1884
eagerness 1 w 1893
to 23 w 1895
listen 1 w 1901
to 24 w 1903
your 3 w 1907
wisdom 2 w 1913
I 12 w 1914
shall 3 w 1919
venture 1 w 1926
to 25 w 1928
improvise 1 w 1937
in 36 w 1939
your 4 w 1943
presence 1 w 1951
So 4 w 1954
both 1 w 1958
you 21 w 1961
and 16 w 1964
your 5 w 1968
disciples 1 w 1977
must 1 w 1981
restrain 1 w 1989
yourselves 1 w 1999
and 17 w 2002
listen 2 w 2008
without 1 w 2015
laughing 1 w 2023
and 18 w 2027
you 24 w 2030
son 2 w 2034
of 15 w 2036
Axiochus 1 w 2044
answer 1 w 2051
me 17 w 2053
this 5 w 2057

all 11 w 2063
we 4 w 2065
human 1 w 2070

this 6 w 2098
question 2 w 2106
one 7 w 2109
of 16 w 2111
the 47 w 2114

I 13 w 2126
was 1 w 2129

now 9 w 2144

I 14 w 2149
suppose 1 w 2156
it 18 w 2158
is 26 w 2160
stupid 1 w 2166
merely 1 w 2172

such 3 w 2181
things 2 w 2187
since 1 w 2193
every 1 w 2198
