Hermogenes. No, by Zeus, I do not. But I think Hesiod is right in saying:
If you can only add little to little, it is worth while.
Hes. WD 359 So now if you can make even a little progress, do not shirk the trouble, but oblige Socratesyou owe it to himand me.

Socrates. For that matter, Cratylus, I would not positively affirm any of the things I have said. I merely expressed the opinions which I reached with the help of Hermogenes. So far as I am concerned, you need not hesitate,
428b
and if your view is better than mine, I will accept it. And I should not be at all surprised if it were better; for I think you have not only investigated such matters yourself but have been taught about them by others. So if you have any better theory to propound, put me down as one of your pupils in the course on the correctness of names.

Cratylus. Yes, Socrates, I have, as you say, paid attention to these matters, and perhaps I might make you my pupil. However, I am afraid the opposite is the case,
428c
and I am impelled to say to you what Achilles says in the Prayers to Ajax. He says:
Ajax, descendant of Zeus, son of Telamon, chief of thy people,
All thou hast uttered is good in my sight and pleases my spirit.
Hom. Il. 9.644 f And so, Socrates, your oracular utterances seem to me to be much to my mind, whether you are inspired by Euthyphro or some other Muse has dwelt within you all along without our knowing it.
428d

Socrates. My excellent Cratylus, I myself have been marvelling at my own wisdom all along, and I cannot believe in it. So I think we ought to reexamine my utterances. For the worst of all deceptions is self-deception. How can it help being terrible, when the deceiver is always present and never stirs from the spot? So I think we must turn back repeatedly to what we have said and must try, as the poet says, to look
both forwards and backwards.
Hom. Il. 1.343; 3.109
428e
Then let us now see what we have said. Correctness of a name, we say, is the quality of showing the nature of the thing named. Shall we call that a satisfactory statement?

Cratylus. I am perfectly satisfied with it, Socrates.

Socrates. Names, then, are given with a view to instruction?

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. Shall we, then; say that this instruction is an art and has its artisans?

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. Who are they?

429
429a

Cratylus. The lawgivers, as you said in the beginning.

Socrates. Shall we declare that this art arises in men like the other arts, or not? What I mean is this: Some painters are better, and others worse, are they not?

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. And the better produce better worksthat is, their paintingsand the others worse works? And likewise some builders build better houses and others worse?

Cratylus. Yes.
429b

Socrates. Then do some lawgivers produce better, and others worse works?

Cratylus. No; at that point I cease to agree.

Socrates. Then you do not think that some laws are better, and some worse?

Cratylus. No, I do not.

Socrates. And you do not, it appears, think that one name is better, and another worse?

Cratylus. No, I do not.

Socrates. Then all names are correct?

Cratylus. All that are really names.

Socrates. How about the name of our friend Hermogenes,
429c
which was mentioned a while ago? Shall we say that it is not his name at all, unless he belongs to the race of Hermes, or that it is his name, but is incorrect?

Cratylus. I think, Socrates, that it is not his name at all; it appears to be his, but is really the name of some one else who possesses the nature that makes the name clear.

Socrates. And when anyone says that our friend is Hermogenes, is he not even speaking falsely? For perhaps it is not even possible to say that he is Hermogenes, if he is not.

Cratylus. What do you mean?

Socrates. Do you mean to say that it is impossible to speak falsehood at all?
429d
For there are, my dear Cratylus, many who do so, and who have done so in the past.

Cratylus. Why, Socrates, how could anyone who says that which he says, say that which is not? Is not falsehood saying that which is not?

Socrates. Your reasoning is too clever for me at my age, my friend. However, tell me this: Do you think it is possible to speak falsehood,
429e
but not to say it?

Cratylus. Neither to speak nor to say it.

Socrates. Nor utter it or use it as a form of address? For instance, if some one should meet you in hospitable fashion, should grasp your hand and say, Well met, my friend from Athens, son of Smicrion, Hermogenes, would he be saying or speaking or uttering or addressing these words not to you, but to Hermogenesor to nobody?

Cratylus. I think, Socrates, the man would be producing sounds without sense.

Socrates. Even that reply is welcome;
430
430a
for I can ask whether the words he produced would be true, or false, or partly true and partly false. Even that would suffice.

Cratylus. I should say that the man in such a case was merely making a noise, going through purposeless motions, as if he were beating a bronze pot.

Socrates. Let us see, Cratylus, if we cannot come to terms somehow. You would agree, would you not, that the name is one thing and the thing of which it is the name is another?

Cratylus. Yes, I should.

Socrates. And you agree that the name is an imitation
430b
of the thing named?

Cratylus. Most assuredly.

Socrates. And you agree that paintings also are imitations, though in a different way, of things?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. Well thenfor perhaps I do not understand, and you may be rightcan both of these imitations, the paintings and the names, be assigned and applied to the things which they imitate, or not?
430c

Cratylus. They can.

Socrates. First, then, consider this question: Can we assign the likeness of the man to the man and that of the woman to the woman, and so forth?

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. And can we conversely attribute that of the man to the woman, and the womans to the man?

Cratylus. That is also possible.

Socrates. And are these assignments both correct, or only the former?

Cratylus. The former.

Socrates. The assignment, in short, which attributes to each that which belongs to it and is like it.

Cratylus. That is my view.

Socrates. To put an end to contentious argument between you and me,
430d
since we are friends, let me state my position. I call that kind of assignment in the case of both imitations paintings and namescorrect, and in the case of names not only correct, but true; and the other kind, which gives and applies the unlike imitation, I call incorrect and, in the case of names, false.

Cratylus. But it may be, Socrates, that this incorrect assignment is possible in the case of paintings, and not in the case of names,
430e
which must be always correctly assigned.

Socrates. What do you mean? What difference is there between the two? Can I not step up to a man and say to him, This is your portrait, and show him perhaps his own likeness or, perhaps, that of a woman? And by show I mean bring before the sense of sight.

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. Well, then, can I not step up to the same man again and say, This is your name? A name is an imitation, just as a picture is.
431
431a
Very well; can I not say to him, This is your name, and then bring before his sense of hearing perhaps the imitation of himself, saying that it is a man, or perhaps the imitation of the female of the human species, saying that it is a woman? Do you not believe that this is possible and sometimes happens?

Cratylus. I am willing to concede it, Socrates, and grant that you are right.

Socrates. That is a good thing for you to do, my friend, if I am right; for now we need no longer argue about the matter.
431b
If, then, some such assignment of names takes place, we will call one kind speaking truth, and the other speaking falsehood. But if this is accepted, and if it is possible to assign names incorrectly and to give to objects not the names that befit them, but sometimes those that are unfitting, it would be possible to treat verbs in the same way. And if verbs and nouns can be assigned in this way, the same must be true of sentences; for sentences are, I conceive, a combination of verbs and nouns.
431c
What do you say to that, Cratylus?

Cratylus. I agree; I think you are right.

Socrates. If, then, we compare the earliest words to sketches, it is possible in them, as in pictures, to reproduce all the colors and shapes, or not all; some may be wanting, and some may be added, and they may be too many or too large. Is not that true?

Cratylus. Yes, it is.

Socrates. Then he who reproduces all, produces good sketches and pictures, and he who adds or takes away produces also sketches and pictures, but bad ones?
431d

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. And how about him who imitates the nature of things by means of letters and syllables? By the same principle, if he gives all that is appropriate, the imagethat is to say, the namewill be good, and if he sometimes omits a little, it will be an image, but not a good one; and therefore some names are well and others badly made. Is that not true?

Cratylus. Perhaps.
431e

Socrates. Perhaps, then, one artisan of names will be good, and another bad?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. The name of such an artisan was lawgiver?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. Perhaps, then, by Zeus, as is the case in the other arts, one lawgiver may be good and another bad, if we accept our previous conclusions.

Cratylus. That is true. But you see, Socrates, when by the science of grammar we assign these lettersalpha, beta, and the restto names,
432
432a
if we take away or add or transpose any letter, it is not true that the name is written, but written incorrectly; it is not written at all, but immediately becomes a different word, if any such thing happens to it.

Socrates. Perhaps we are not considering the matter in the right way.

Cratylus. Why not?

Socrates. It may be that what you say would be true of those things which must necessarily consist of a certain number or cease to exist at all, as ten, for instance, or any number you like,
432b
if you add or subtract anything is immediately another number; but this is not the kind of correctness which applies to quality or to images in general; on the contrary, the image must not by any means reproduce all the qualities of that which it imitates, if it is to be an image. See if I am not right. Would there be two things, Cratylus and the image of Cratylus, if some god should not merely imitate your color and form, as painters do, but should also make all the inner parts like yours, should reproduce
432c
the same flexibility and warmth, should put into them motion, life, and intellect, such as exist in you, and in short, should place beside you a duplicate of all your qualities? Would there be in such an event Cratylus and an image of Cratylus, or two Cratyluses?

Cratylus. I should say, Socrates, two Cratyluses.

Socrates. Then dont you see, my friend, that we must look for some other principle of correctness in images and in names, of which we were speaking, and must not insist that they are no longer images
432d
if anything be wanting or be added? Do you not perceive how far images are from possessing the same qualities as the originals which they imitate?

Cratylus. Yes, I do.

Socrates. Surely, Cratylus, the effect produced by the names upon the things of which they are the names would be ridiculous, if they were to be entirely like them in every respect. For everything would be duplicated, and no one could tell in any case which was the real thing and which the name.

Cratylus. Quite true.

Socrates. Then do not be faint-hearted, but have the courage to admit that one name may be correctly and another incorrectly given;
432e
do not insist that it must have all the letters and be exactly the same as the thing named, but grant that an inappropriate letter may be employed. But if a letter, then grant that also a noun in a clause, and if a noun, then also a clause in a sentence may be employed which is not appropriate to the things in question, and the thing may none the less be named and described, so long as the intrinsic quality of the thing named is retained,
433
433a
as is the case in the names of the letters of the alphabet, if you remember what Hermogenes and I were saying a while ago.

beginning 1 w 1930
Socrates 10 w 1939
Shall 3 w 1945
we 12 w 1947
declare 1 w 1954
that 4 w 1958
this 2 w 1962
art 3 w 1965
arises 1 w 1971
in 31 w 1973
men 2 w 1976
like 1 w 1980
the 27 w 1983
other 3 w 1988
arts 1 w 1992
or 13 w 1995
not 8 w 1998
What 1 w 2003
I 23 w 2004
mean 1 w 2008
is 18 w 2010
this 3 w 2014
Some 1 w 2019
painters 1 w 2027
are 5 w 2030
better 4 w 2036
and 11 w 2040
others 2 w 2046
worse 1 w 2051
are 6 w 2055
they 2 w 2059
not 9 w 2062
Cratylus 8 w 2071
Certainly 3 w 2081
Socrates 11 w 2090
And 3 w 2094
the 31 w 2097
better 5 w 2103
produce 1 w 2110
better 6 w 2116
works 1 w 2121
that 5 w 2126
is 20 w 2128
their 1 w 2134
paintings 1 w 2143
and 12 w 2147
the 33 w 2150
others 3 w 2156
worse 2 w 2161
works 2 w 2166
And 4 w 2170
likewise 1 w 2178
some 2 w 2182
builders 1 w 2190
build 2 w 2195
better 7 w 2201
houses 1 w 2207
and 13 w 2210
others 4 w 2216
worse 3 w 2221
Cratylus 9 w 2230
Yes 2 w 2234
Socrates 12 w 2243
Then 2 w 2248
do 5 w 2250
some 3 w 2254
lawgivers 2 w 2263
produce 2 w 2270
better 8 w 2276
and 14 w 2280
others 5 w 2286
worse 4 w 2291
works 3 w 2296
Cratylus 10 w 2305
No 2 w 2308
at 45 w 2311
that 6 w 2315
point 1 w 2320
I 24 w 2321
cease 1 w 2326
to 16 w 2328
agree 1 w 2333
Socrates 13 w 2342
Then 3 w 2347
you 17 w 2350
do 6 w 2352
not 10 w 2355
think 5 w 2360
that 7 w 2364
some 4 w 2368
laws 1 w 2372
are 7 w 2375
better 9 w 2381
and 15 w 2385
some 5 w 2389
worse 5 w 2394
Cratylus 11 w 2403
No 3 w 2406
I 25 w 2408
do 7 w 2410
not 11 w 2413
Socrates 14 w 2422
And 5 w 2426
you 18 w 2429
do 8 w 2431
not 12 w 2434
it 23 w 2437
appears 1 w 2444
think 6 w 2450
that 8 w 2454
one 2 w 2457
name 4 w 2461
is 22 w 2463
better 10 w 2469
and 16 w 2473
another 1 w 2480
worse 6 w 2485
Cratylus 12 w 2494
No 4 w 2497
I 26 w 2499
do 9 w 2501
not 14 w 2504
Socrates 15 w 2513
Then 4 w 2518
all 9 w 2521
names 2 w 2526
are 8 w 2529
correct 2 w 2536
Cratylus 13 w 2545
All 2 w 2549
that 9 w 2553
are 9 w 2556
really 1 w 2562
names 3 w 2567
Socrates 16 w 2576
How 3 w 2580
about 2 w 2585
the 38 w 2588
name 7 w 2592
of 12 w 2594
our 7 w 2597
friend 1 w 2603
Hermogenes 3 w 2613
which 2 w 2619
was 1 w 2622
mentioned 1 w 2631
a 202 w 2632
while 2 w 2637
ago 1 w 2640
Shall 4 w 2646
we 13 w 2648
say 9 w 2651
that 10 w 2655
it 24 w 2657
is 23 w 2659
not 15 w 2662
his 4 w 2665
name 8 w 2669
at 58 w 2671
all 12 w 2674
unless 1 w 2681
he 50 w 2683
belongs 1 w 2690
to 17 w 2692
the 39 w 2695
race 1 w 2699
of 13 w 2701
Hermes 1 w 2707
or 24 w 2710
that 11 w 2714
it 25 w 2716
is 25 w 2718
his 5 w 2721
name 9 w 2725
but 3 w 2729
is 27 w 2731
incorrect 1 w 2740
Cratylus 14 w 2749
I 27 w 2751
think 7 w 2756
Socrates 17 w 2765
that 12 w 2770
it 26 w 2772
is 28 w 2774
not 16 w 2777
his 6 w 2780
name 10 w 2784
at 63 w 2786
all 13 w 2789
it 27 w 2792
appears 2 w 2799
to 18 w 2801
be 19 w 2803
his 7 w 2806
but 4 w 2810
is 31 w 2812
really 2 w 2818
the 40 w 2821
name 11 w 2825
of 14 w 2827
some 6 w 2831
one 4 w 2834
else 1 w 2838
who 1 w 2841
possesses 1 w 2850
the 41 w 2853
nature 2 w 2859
that 13 w 2863
makes 1 w 2868
the 42 w 2871
name 12 w 2875
clear 1 w 2880
Socrates 18 w 2889
And 6 w 2893
when 2 w 2897
anyone 1 w 2903
says 4 w 2907
that 14 w 2911
our 8 w 2914
friend 2 w 2920
is 32 w 2922
Hermogenes 4 w 2932
is 33 w 2935
he 56 w 2937
not 17 w 2940
even 2 w 2944
speaking 1 w 2952
falsely 1 w 2959
For 3 w 2963
perhaps 2 w 2970
it 28 w 2972
is 34 w 2974
not 18 w 2977
even 3 w 2981
possible 1 w 2989
to 19 w 2991
say 11 w 2994
that 15 w 2998
he 57 w 3000
is 35 w 3002
Hermogenes 5 w 3012
if 5 w 3015
he 58 w 3017
is 36 w 3019
not 19 w 3022
Cratylus 15 w 3031
What 2 w 3036
do 10 w 3038
you 19 w 3041
mean 2 w 3045
Socrates 19 w 3054
Do 1 w 3057
you 20 w 3060
mean 3 w 3064
to 20 w 3066
say 12 w 3069
that 16 w 3073
it 29 w 3075
is 37 w 3077
impossible 1 w 3087
to 21 w 3089
speak 2 w 3094
falsehood 1 w 3103
at 73 w 3105
all 15 w 3108
For 4 w 3112
there 1 w 3117
are 10 w 3120
my 8 w 3123
dear 1 w 3127
Cratylus 16 w 3135
many 1 w 3140
who 2 w 3143
do 11 w 3145
so 9 w 3147
and 17 w 3151
who 3 w 3154
have 9 w 3158
done 1 w 3162
so 10 w 3164
in 42 w 3166
the 44 w 3169
past 1 w 3173
Cratylus 17 w 3182
Why 1 w 3186
Socrates 20 w 3195
how 2 w 3199
could 1 w 3204
anyone 2 w 3210
who 4 w 3213
says 5 w 3217
that 17 w 3221
which 3 w 3226
he 61 w 3228
says 6 w 3232
say 15 w 3236
that 18 w 3240
which 4 w 3245
is 38 w 3247
not 20 w 3250
Is 1 w 3253
not 21 w 3256
falsehood 2 w 3265
saying 2 w 3271
that 19 w 3275
which 5 w 3280
is 39 w 3282
not 22 w 3285
Socrates 21 w 3294
Your 1 w 3299
reasoning 1 w 3308
is 40 w 3310
too 1 w 3313
clever 1 w 3319
for 3 w 3322
me 32 w 3324
at 81 w 3326
my 9 w 3328
age 1 w 3331
my 10 w 3334
friend 3 w 3340
However 2 w 3348
tell 1 w 3353
me 33 w 3355
this 4 w 3359
Do 2 w 3362
you 21 w 3365
think 8 w 3370
it 30 w 3372
is 42 w 3374
possible 3 w 3382
to 23 w 3384
speak 3 w 3389
falsehood 3 w 3398
but 5 w 3402
not 23 w 3405
to 24 w 3407
say 17 w 3410
it 31 w 3412
Cratylus 18 w 3421
Neither 1 w 3429
to 25 w 3431
speak 4 w 3436
nor 1 w 3439
to 26 w 3441
say 18 w 3444
it 33 w 3446
Socrates 22 w 3455
Nor 1 w 3459
utter 4 w 3464
it 34 w 3466
or 31 w 3468
use 3 w 3471
it 35 w 3473
as 15 w 3475
a 278 w 3476
form 1 w 3480
of 15 w 3482
address 1 w 3489
For 5 w 3493
instance 1 w 3501
if 6 w 3504
some 7 w 3508
one 8 w 3511
should 2 w 3517
meet 1 w 3521
you 22 w 3524
in 47 w 3526
hospitable 1 w 3536
fashion 1 w 3543
should 3 w 3550
grasp 1 w 3555
your 5 w 3559
hand 1 w 3563
and 19 w 3566
say 19 w 3569
Well 1 w 3574
met 1 w 3577
my 11 w 3580
friend 4 w 3586
from 2 w 3590
Athens 1 w 3596
son 3 w 3600
of 16 w 3602
Smicrion 1 w 3610
Hermogenes 6 w 3621
would 2 w 3627
he 64 w 3629
be 20 w 3631
saying 3 w 3637
or 34 w 3639
speaking 2 w 3647
or 35 w 3649
uttering 1 w 3657
or 36 w 3659
addressing 1 w 3669
these 2 w 3674
words 1 w 3679
not 24 w 3682
to 27 w 3684
you 24 w 3687
but 6 w 3691
to 28 w 3693
Hermogenes 7 w 3703
or 38 w 3706
to 29 w 3708
nobody 1 w 3714
Cratylus 19 w 3723
I 29 w 3725
think 9 w 3730
Socrates 23 w 3739
the 48 w 3743
man 2 w 3746
would 3 w 3751
be 21 w 3753
producing 1 w 3762
sounds 1 w 3768
without 2 w 3775
sense 1 w 3780
Socrates 24 w 3789
Even 1 w 3794
that 20 w 3798
reply 1 w 3803
is 43 w 3805
welcome 1 w 3812
for 5 w 3816
I 30 w 3817
can 5 w 3820
ask 1 w 3823
whether 2 w 3830
the 50 w 3833
words 2 w 3838
he 70 w 3840
produced 1 w 3848
would 4 w 3853
be 22 w 3855
true 1 w 3859
or 41 w 3862
false 5 w 3867
or 42 w 3870
partly 1 w 3876
true 2 w 3880
and 20 w 3883
partly 2 w 3889
false 6 w 3894
Even 2 w 3899
that 21 w 3903
would 5 w 3908
suffice 1 w 3915
Cratylus 20 w 3924
I 31 w 3926
should 4 w 3932
say 21 w 3935
that 22 w 3939
the 51 w 3942
man 3 w 3945
in 54 w 3947
such 2 w 3951
a 307 w 3952
case 2 w 3956
was 2 w 3959
merely 2 w 3965
making 1 w 3971
a 311 w 3972
noise 1 w 3977
going 1 w 3983
through 1 w 3990
purposeless 1 w 4001
motions 1 w 4008
as 21 w 4011
if 7 w 4013
he 72 w 4015
were 2 w 4019
beating 1 w 4026
a 314 w 4027
bronze 1 w 4033
pot 2 w 4036
Socrates 25 w 4045
Let 1 w 4049
us 29 w 4051
see 3 w 4054
Cratylus 21 w 4063
if 8 w 4066
we 17 w 4068
cannot 2 w 4074
come 2 w 4078
to 30 w 4080
terms 1 w 4085
somehow 1 w 4092
You 2 w 4096
would 6 w 4101
agree 2 w 4106
would 7 w 4112
you 25 w 4115
not 26 w 4118
that 23 w 4123
the 52 w 4126
name 13 w 4130
is 45 w 4132
one 9 w 4135
thing 3 w 4140
and 21 w 4143
the 53 w 4146
thing 4 w 4151
of 17 w 4153
which 6 w 4158
it 38 w 4160
is 46 w 4162
the 54 w 4165
name 14 w 4169
is 47 w 4171
another 2 w 4178
Cratylus 22 w 4187
Yes 3 w 4191
I 32 w 4193
should 5 w 4199
Socrates 26 w 4208
And 7 w 4212
you 26 w 4215
agree 3 w 4220
that 24 w 4224
the 56 w 4227
name 15 w 4231
is 48 w 4233
an 47 w 4235
imitation 1 w 4244
of 18 w 4246
the 57 w 4249
thing 5 w 4254
named 2 w 4259
Cratylus 23 w 4268
Most 1 w 4273
assuredly 1 w 4282
Socrates 27 w 4291
And 8 w 4295
you 27 w 4298
agree 4 w 4303
that 25 w 4307
paintings 2 w 4316
also 1 w 4320
are 11 w 4323
imitations 1 w 4333
though 1 w 4340
in 63 w 4342
a 341 w 4343
different 1 w 4352
way 2 w 4355
of 19 w 4358
things 2 w 4364
Cratylus 24 w 4373
Yes 4 w 4377
Socrates 28 w 4386
Well 2 w 4391
then 4 w 4395
for 6 w 4399
perhaps 3 w 4406
I 33 w 4407
do 13 w 4409
not 28 w 4412
understand 1 w 4422
and 23 w 4426
you 28 w 4429
may 1 w 4432
be 24 w 4434
right 2 w 4439
can 7 w 4443
both 2 w 4447
of 20 w 4449
these 3 w 4454
imitations 2 w 4464
the 60 w 4468
paintings 3 w 4477
and 24 w 4480
the 61 w 4483
names 4 w 4488
be 25 w 4491
assigned 1 w 4499
and 25 w 4502
applied 1 w 4509
to 31 w 4511
the 62 w 4514
things 3 w 4520
which 7 w 4525
they 3 w 4529
imitate 1 w 4536
or 44 w 4539
not 29 w 4542
Cratylus 25 w 4551
They 1 w 4556
can 8 w 4559
Socrates 29 w 4568
First 1 w 4574
then 5 w 4579
consider 1 w 4588
this 5 w 4592
question 1 w 4600
Can 1 w 4604
we 18 w 4606
assign 2 w 4612
the 65 w 4615
likeness 1 w 4623
of 21 w 4625
the 66 w 4628
man 4 w 4631
to 32 w 4633
the 67 w 4636
man 5 w 4639
and 26 w 4642
that 26 w 4646
of 22 w 4648
the 68 w 4651
woman 1 w 4656
to 33 w 4658
the 69 w 4661
woman 2 w 4666
and 27 w 4670
so 17 w 4672
forth 1 w 4677
Cratylus 26 w 4686
Certainly 4 w 4696
Socrates 30 w 4705
And 9 w 4709
can 9 w 4712
we 19 w 4714
conversely 1 w 4724
attribute 1 w 4733
that 27 w 4737
of 23 w 4739
the 70 w 4742
man 8 w 4745
to 34 w 4747
the 71 w 4750
woman 3 w 4755
and 28 w 4759
the 72 w 4762
woman 4 w 4767
s 358 w 4769
to 35 w 4771
the 73 w 4774
man 11 w 4777
Cratylus 27 w 4786
That 1 w 4791
is 50 w 4793
also 2 w 4797
possible 4 w 4805
Socrates 31 w 4814
And 10 w 4818
are 12 w 4821
these 4 w 4826
assignments 1 w 4837
both 3 w 4841
correct 4 w 4848
or 47 w 4851
only 3 w 4855
the 75 w 4858
former 1 w 4864
Cratylus 28 w 4873
The 7 w 4877
former 2 w 4883
Socrates 32 w 4892
The 8 w 4896
assignment 2 w 4906
in 69 w 4909
short 1 w 4914
which 8 w 4920
attributes 1 w 4930
to 36 w 4932
each 2 w 4936
that 28 w 4940
which 9 w 4945
belongs 2 w 4952
to 37 w 4954
it 43 w 4956
and 29 w 4959
is 51 w 4961
like 4 w 4965
it 44 w 4967
Cratylus 29 w 4976
That 2 w 4981
is 52 w 4983
my 12 w 4985
view 3 w 4989
Socrates 33 w 4998
To 1 w 5001
put 2 w 5004
an 68 w 5006
end 6 w 5009
to 38 w 5011
contentious 1 w 5022
argument 1 w 5030
between 1 w 5037
you 29 w 5040
and 30 w 5043
me 51 w 5045
since 1 w 5051
we 21 w 5053
are 13 w 5056
friends 1 w 5063
let 2 w 5067
me 52 w 5069
state 2 w 5074
my 13 w 5076
position 1 w 5084
I 34 w 5086
call 2 w 5090
