Socrates.
427
427a
Therefore he imitates the nature of ἰέναι (go) and ἵεσθαι (hasten) by means of iota, just as he has imitated all such notions as ψυχρόν (cold, shivering), ζέον (seething), σείεσθαι (shake), and σεισμός (shock) by means of phi, psi, sigma, and zeta, because those letters are pronounced with much breath. Whenever he imitates that which resembles blowing, the giver of names always appears to use for the most part such letters. And again he appears to have thought that the compression and pressure of the tongue in the pronunciation of delta and tau was naturally fitted
427b
to imitate the notion of binding and rest. And perceiving that the tongue has a gliding movement most in the pronunciation of lambda, he made the words λεῖα (level), ὀλισθάναιν (glide) itself, λιπαρόν (sleek), κολλῶδες (glutinous), and the like to conform to it. Where the gliding of the tongue is stopped by the sound of gamma he reproduced the nature of γλισχρόν (glutinous), γλυκύ (sweet), and γλοιῶδες (gluey).
427c
And again, perceiving that nu is an internal sound, he made the words ἔνδον (inside) and ἐντός (within), assimilating the meanings to the letters, and alpha again he assigned to greatness, and eta to length, because the letters are large. He needed the sign Ο for the expression of γόγγυλον (round), and made it the chief element of the word. And in this way the lawgiver appears to apply the other letters, making by letters and syllables a name for each and every thing, and from these names he compounds all the rest by imitation.
427d
This, Hermogenes, appears to me to be the theory of the correctness of names, unless, indeed, Cratylus has some other view.

Hermogenes. Truly, Socrates, as I said in the beginning, Cratylus often troubles me a good deal; he declares that there is such a thing as correctness of names, but does not say clearly what it is; and so I cannot tell whether he speaks so obscurely about it on any given occasion intentionally or unintentionally.
427e
So now, Cratylus, tell me, in the presence of Socrates, do you like what Socrates says about names, or have you a better theory to propose? And if you have, tell us about it; then you will either learn from Socrates or instruct both him and me.

Cratylus. But, Hermogenes, do you think it is an easy matter to learn or teach any subject so quickly, especially so important an one as this, which appears to me to be one of the most important?

be 3 w 1302
the 29 w 1305

of 14 w 1313
the 31 w 1316
correctness 1 w 1327
of 15 w 1329
names 3 w 1334
unless 1 w 1341
indeed 1 w 1348
Cratylus 1 w 1357
has 4 w 1360
some 1 w 1364
other 2 w 1369
view 1 w 1373
Hermogenes 2 w 1384
Truly 1 w 1390
Socrates 2 w 1399
as 10 w 1402
I 1 w 1403
said 1 w 1407
in 26 w 1409
the 33 w 1412
beginning 1 w 1421
Cratylus 2 w 1430
often 1 w 1435
troubles 1 w 1443
me 12 w 1445
a 107 w 1446
good 1 w 1450
deal 1 w 1454
he 46 w 1457
declares 1 w 1465
that 5 w 1469
there 1 w 1474
is 5 w 1476
such 3 w 1480
a 111 w 1481
thing 3 w 1486
as 11 w 1488
correctness 2 w 1499
of 17 w 1501
names 4 w 1506
but 1 w 1510
does 1 w 1514
not 3 w 1517
say 1 w 1520
clearly 1 w 1527
what 1 w 1531
it 12 w 1533
is 6 w 1535
and 16 w 1539
so 4 w 1541
I 2 w 1542
cannot 1 w 1548
tell 1 w 1552
whether 1 w 1559
he 50 w 1561
speaks 1 w 1567
so 5 w 1569
obscurely 1 w 1578
about 1 w 1583
it 13 w 1585
on 15 w 1587
any 1 w 1590
given 1 w 1595
occasion 1 w 1603
intentionally 1 w 1616
or 12 w 1618
unintentionally 1 w 1633
So 3 w 1636
now 1 w 1639
Cratylus 3 w 1648
tell 2 w 1653
me 14 w 1655
in 32 w 1658
the 36 w 1661
presence 1 w 1669
of 18 w 1671
Socrates 3 w 1679
do 2 w 1682
you 1 w 1685
like 2 w 1689
what 2 w 1693
Socrates 4 w 1701
says 1 w 1705
about 2 w 1710
names 5 w 1715
or 13 w 1718
have 2 w 1722
you 2 w 1725
a 133 w 1726
better 1 w 1732
theory 2 w 1738
to 16 w 1740
propose 1 w 1747
And 5 w 1751
if 1 w 1753
you 3 w 1756
have 3 w 1760
tell 3 w 1765
us 10 w 1767
about 3 w 1772
it 14 w 1774
then 1 w 1779
you 4 w 1782
will 1 w 1786
either 1 w 1792
learn 1 w 1797
from 2 w 1801
Socrates 5 w 1809
or 15 w 1811
instruct 1 w 1819
both 1 w 1823
him 1 w 1826
and 17 w 1829
me 16 w 1831
Cratylus 4 w 1840
But 1 w 1844
Hermogenes 3 w 1855
do 3 w 1858
you 5 w 1861
think 1 w 1866
it 16 w 1868
is 7 w 1870
an 24 w 1872
easy 1 w 1876
matter 1 w 1882
to 17 w 1884
learn 2 w 1889
or 16 w 1891
teach 1 w 1896
any 2 w 1899
subject 1 w 1906
so 6 w 1908
quickly 1 w 1915
especially 1 w 1926
so 7 w 1928
important 1 w 1937
an 27 w 1939
one 1 w 1942
as 14 w 1944
this 2 w 1948
which 2 w 1954
appears 5 w 1961
to 18 w 1963
me 17 w 1965
to 19 w 1967
be 6 w 1969
one 2 w 1972
of 19 w 1974
the 40 w 1977
most 3 w 1981
important 2 w 1990
