Hermogenes. Certainly.

Socrates. And what will you call him who can do this, as you called the others musician and painter? What will you call this man?

Hermogenes. I think, Socrates, he is what we have been looking for all along, the name-maker.

Socrates. If that is the case, is it our next duty to consider whether in these names about which you were askingflow, motion, and restraintthe namemaker grasps with his letters and syllables the reality
424b
of the things named and imitates their essential nature, or not?

Hermogenes. Certainly.

Socrates. Well now, let us see whether those are the only primary names, or there are others.

Hermogenes. I think there are others.

Socrates. Yes, most likely there are. Now what is the method of division with which the imitator begins his imitation? Since the imitation of the essential nature is made with letters and syllables, would not the most correct way be for us to separate the letters first,
424c
just as those who undertake the practice of rhythms separate first the qualities of the letters, then those of the syllables, and then, but not till then, come to the study of rhythms?

Hermogenes. Yes.

Socrates. Must not we, too, separate first the vowels, then in their several classes the consonants or mutes, as they are called by those who specialize in phonetics, and also the letters which are neither vowels nor mutes, as well as the various classes that exist among the vowels themselves?
424d
And when we have made all these divisions properly, we must in turn give names to the things which ought to have them, if there are any names to which they can all, like the letters, be referred, from which it is possible to see what their nature is and whether there are any classes among them, as there are among letters. When we have properly examined all these points, we must know how to apply each letter with reference to its fitness, whether one letter is to be applied to one thing or many are to be combined; just as painters, when they wish to produce an imitation, sometimes use only red,
424e
sometimes some other color, and sometimes mix many colors, as when they are making a picture of a man or something of that sort, employing each color, I suppose, as they think the particular picture demands it. In just this way we, too, shall apply letters to things, using one letter for one thing, when that seems to be required, or many letters together, forming syllables, as they are called, and in turn combining syllables,
425
425a
and by their combination forming nouns and verbs. And from nouns and verbs again we shall finally construct something great and fair and complete. Just as in our comparison we made the picture by the art of painting, so now we shall make language by the art of naming, or of rhetoric, or whatever it be.

are 6 w 1115
neither 1 w 1122

nor 1 w 1131

well 1 w 1143
as 9 w 1145

that 2 w 1166
exist 1 w 1171
among 1 w 1176
the 40 w 1179

themselves 1 w 1195
And 2 w 1199
when 1 w 1203
we 8 w 1205
have 2 w 1209
made 2 w 1213
all 6 w 1216
these 2 w 1221
divisions 1 w 1230
properly 1 w 1238
we 9 w 1241
must 1 w 1245
in 15 w 1247
turn 1 w 1251
give 1 w 1255
names 3 w 1260
to 6 w 1262
the 43 w 1265

there 4 w 1299

referred 1 w 1353
from 1 w 1358
which 6 w 1363
it 12 w 1365
is 13 w 1367
possible 1 w 1375
to 9 w 1377
see 2 w 1380
what 4 w 1384
their 3 w 1389
nature 3 w 1395
is 14 w 1397
and 8 w 1400
whether 3 w 1407
there 5 w 1412
are 8 w 1415
any 2 w 1418
classes 3 w 1425
among 2 w 1430
them 3 w 1434
as 12 w 1437
there 6 w 1442
are 9 w 1445
among 3 w 1450
letters 7 w 1457
When 1 w 1462
we 10 w 1464
have 4 w 1468
properly 2 w 1476
examined 1 w 1484
all 8 w 1487
these 3 w 1492
points 1 w 1498
we 11 w 1501
must 2 w 1505
know 1 w 1509
how 1 w 1512
to 10 w 1514
apply 1 w 1519
each 1 w 1523
letter 8 w 1529
with 4 w 1533
reference 1 w 1542
to 11 w 1544
its 1 w 1547
fitness 1 w 1554
whether 4 w 1562
one 2 w 1565
letter 9 w 1571
is 15 w 1573
to 12 w 1575

applied 1 w 1584
to 13 w 1586
one 3 w 1589
thing 3 w 1594

just 2 w 1620
as 13 w 1622
painters 1 w 1630
when 2 w 1635
they 3 w 1639
wish 1 w 1643
to 15 w 1645
produce 1 w 1652
an 17 w 1654
imitation 3 w 1663
sometimes 1 w 1673
use 1 w 1676
only 2 w 1680
red 2 w 1683
sometimes 2 w 1693
some 3 w 1697
other 4 w 1702
color 1 w 1707
and 9 w 1711
sometimes 3 w 1720
mix 1 w 1723
many 2 w 1727
colors 1 w 1733
as 14 w 1736
when 3 w 1740
they 4 w 1744
are 11 w 1747
making 1 w 1753
a 125 w 1754
picture 1 w 1761
of 8 w 1763
a 126 w 1764
man 4 w 1767
or 12 w 1769
something 1 w 1778
of 9 w 1780
that 3 w 1784
sort 1 w 1788
employing 1 w 1798
each 2 w 1802
color 3 w 1807
I 4 w 1809
suppose 1 w 1816
as 15 w 1819
they 5 w 1823
think 3 w 1828
the 59 w 1831
particular 1 w 1841
picture 2 w 1848
demands 1 w 1855
it 17 w 1857
In 1 w 1860
just 3 w 1864
this 3 w 1868
way 2 w 1871
we 12 w 1873
too 2 w 1877
shall 1 w 1883
apply 2 w 1888
letters 8 w 1895
to 17 w 1897
things 3 w 1903
using 1 w 1909
one 4 w 1912
letter 11 w 1918
for 3 w 1921
one 5 w 1924
thing 6 w 1929
when 4 w 1934
that 4 w 1938
seems 1 w 1943
to 18 w 1945
be 7 w 1947
required 1 w 1955
or 16 w 1958
many 3 w 1962
letters 9 w 1969
together 1 w 1977
forming 1 w 1985
syllables 4 w 1994
as 16 w 1997
they 6 w 2001
are 12 w 2004
called 3 w 2010
and 11 w 2014
in 30 w 2016
turn 2 w 2020
combining 1 w 2029
syllables 5 w 2038
and 12 w 2042
by 2 w 2044
their 4 w 2049
combination 1 w 2060
forming 2 w 2067
nouns 1 w 2072
and 13 w 2075
verbs 1 w 2080
And 3 w 2084
from 2 w 2088
nouns 2 w 2093
and 14 w 2096
verbs 2 w 2101
again 1 w 2106
we 13 w 2108
shall 2 w 2113
finally 1 w 2120
construct 1 w 2129
something 2 w 2138
great 1 w 2143
and 15 w 2146
fair 1 w 2150
and 16 w 2153
complete 1 w 2161
Just 1 w 2166
as 17 w 2168
in 38 w 2170
our 2 w 2173

we 14 w 2185
made 3 w 2189

by 3 w 2201
the 64 w 2204
art 2 w 2207
of 10 w 2209
painting 1 w 2217
so 11 w 2220
now 3 w 2223
we 15 w 2225
shall 3 w 2230
make 3 w 2234
language 1 w 2242
by 4 w 2244
the 65 w 2247
art 3 w 2250
of 11 w 2252

of 12 w 2263
