And I can mention to you many others, some one of whom Meletus ought certainly to have produced as a witness in his speech; but if he forgot it then, let him do so now; I yield the floor to him, and let him say, if he has any such testimony. But you will find that the exact opposite is the case, gentlemen, and that they are all ready to aid me, the man who corrupts and injures their relatives, as Meletus and Anytus say.

34b
Now those who are themselves corrupted might have some motive in aiding me; but what reason could their relatives have, who are not corrupted and are already older men, unless it be the right and true reason, that they know that Meletus is lying and I am speaking the truth?
Well, gentlemen, this, and perhaps more like this, is about all I have to say in my defence. Perhaps some one among you may be offended
34c
when he remembers his own conduct, if he, even in a case of less importance than this, begged and besought the judges with many tears, and brought forward his children to arouse compassion, and many other friends and relatives; whereas I will do none of these things, though I am, apparently, in the very greatest danger. Perhaps some one with these thoughts in mind may be harshly disposed toward me and may cast his vote in anger. Now if any one of you is so disposed
34d
I do not believe there is such a personbut if there should be, I think I should be speaking fairly if I said to him, My friend, I too have relatives, for I am, as Homer has it,
not born of an oak or a rock,
[*]but of human parents, so that I have relatives and, men of Athens, I have three sons, one nearly grown up, and two still children; but nevertheless I shall not bring any of them here and beg you to acquit me. And why shall I not do so? Not because I am stubborn, Athenians,
34e
or lack respect for you. Whether I fear death or not is another matter, but for the sake of my good name and yours and that of the whole state, I think it is not right for me to do any of these things in view of my age and my reputation, whether deserved or not; for at any rate the opinion prevails that Socrates
35
35a
is in some way superior to most men.

And 1 w 3
I 1 w 4
can 1 w 7
mention 1 w 14
to 1 w 16
you 1 w 19
many 1 w 23
others 1 w 29
some 1 w 34
one 1 w 37
of 1 w 39
whom 1 w 43
Meletus 1 w 50
ought 1 w 55
certainly 1 w 64
to 2 w 66
have 1 w 70
produced 1 w 78
as 1 w 80
a 6 w 81
witness 1 w 88
in 2 w 90
his 1 w 93
speech 1 w 99
but 1 w 103
if 1 w 105
he 2 w 107
forgot 1 w 113
it 2 w 115
then 1 w 119
let 2 w 123
him 1 w 126
do 1 w 128
so 2 w 130
now 1 w 133
I 2 w 135
yield 1 w 140
the 3 w 143
floor 1 w 148
to 3 w 150
him 2 w 153
and 1 w 157
let 3 w 160
him 3 w 163
say 1 w 166
if 2 w 169
he 5 w 171
has 1 w 174
any 2 w 177
such 1 w 181
testimony 1 w 190
But 1 w 194
you 2 w 197
will 1 w 201
find 1 w 205
that 1 w 209
the 4 w 212
exact 1 w 217
opposite 1 w 225
is 2 w 227
the 5 w 230
case 1 w 234
gentlemen 1 w 244
and 2 w 248
that 2 w 252
they 1 w 256
are 1 w 259
all 1 w 262
ready 1 w 267
to 4 w 269
aid 1 w 272
me 4 w 274
the 7 w 278
man 2 w 281
who 2 w 284
corrupts 1 w 292
and 3 w 295
injures 1 w 302
their 1 w 307
relatives 1 w 316
as 4 w 319
Meletus 2 w 326
and 4 w 329
Anytus 1 w 335
say 2 w 338
Now 1 w 342
those 1 w 347
who 3 w 350
are 2 w 353
themselves 1 w 363
corrupted 1 w 372
might 1 w 377
have 2 w 381
some 2 w 385
motive 1 w 391
in 5 w 393
aiding 1 w 399
me 6 w 401
but 2 w 405
what 1 w 409
reason 1 w 415
could 1 w 420
their 2 w 425
relatives 2 w 434
have 3 w 438
who 4 w 442
are 3 w 445
not 1 w 448
corrupted 2 w 457
and 5 w 460
are 4 w 463
already 1 w 470
older 1 w 475
men 3 w 478
unless 1 w 485
it 4 w 487
be 1 w 489
the 11 w 492
right 1 w 497
and 6 w 500
true 1 w 504
reason 2 w 510
that 3 w 515
they 2 w 519
know 1 w 523
that 4 w 527
Meletus 3 w 534
is 3 w 536
lying 1 w 541
and 7 w 544
I 3 w 545
am 1 w 547
speaking 1 w 555
the 13 w 558
truth 1 w 563
Well 1 w 568
gentlemen 2 w 578
this 1 w 583
and 8 w 587
perhaps 1 w 594
more 1 w 598
like 1 w 602
this 2 w 606
is 6 w 609
about 1 w 614
all 2 w 617
I 4 w 618
have 4 w 622
to 5 w 624
say 3 w 627
in 9 w 629
my 1 w 631
defence 1 w 638
Perhaps 1 w 646
some 3 w 650
one 2 w 653
among 1 w 658
you 3 w 661
may 1 w 664
be 2 w 666
offended 1 w 674
when 1 w 678
he 17 w 680
remembers 1 w 689
his 4 w 692
own 1 w 695
conduct 1 w 702
if 3 w 705
he 18 w 707
even 1 w 712
in 10 w 714
a 54 w 715
case 2 w 719
of 3 w 721
less 2 w 725
importance 1 w 735
than 1 w 739
this 3 w 743
begged 1 w 750
and 9 w 753
besought 1 w 761
the 14 w 764
judges 1 w 770
with 1 w 774
many 2 w 778
tears 1 w 783
and 10 w 787
brought 1 w 794
forward 1 w 801
his 6 w 804
children 1 w 812
to 6 w 814
arouse 1 w 820
compassion 1 w 830
and 11 w 834
many 3 w 838
other 2 w 843
friends 1 w 850
and 12 w 853
relatives 3 w 862
whereas 1 w 870
I 5 w 871
will 2 w 875
do 2 w 877
none 1 w 881
of 4 w 883
these 1 w 888
things 1 w 894
though 1 w 901
I 6 w 902
am 3 w 904
apparently 1 w 915
in 12 w 918
the 17 w 921
very 1 w 925
greatest 1 w 933
danger 1 w 939
Perhaps 2 w 947
some 4 w 951
one 4 w 954
with 2 w 958
these 2 w 963
thoughts 1 w 971
in 13 w 973
mind 1 w 977
may 2 w 980
be 6 w 982
harshly 1 w 989
disposed 1 w 997
toward 1 w 1003
me 12 w 1005
and 13 w 1008
may 3 w 1011
cast 1 w 1015
his 7 w 1018
vote 1 w 1022
in 15 w 1024
anger 2 w 1029
Now 2 w 1033
if 4 w 1035
any 5 w 1038
one 5 w 1041
of 5 w 1043
you 4 w 1046
is 12 w 1048
so 9 w 1050
disposed 2 w 1058
I 7 w 1060
do 3 w 1062
not 2 w 1065
believe 1 w 1072
there 1 w 1077
is 14 w 1079
such 2 w 1083
a 84 w 1084
person 1 w 1090
but 3 w 1094
if 5 w 1096
there 2 w 1101
should 1 w 1107
be 8 w 1109
I 8 w 1111
think 1 w 1116
I 9 w 1117
should 2 w 1123
be 9 w 1125
speaking 2 w 1133
fairly 1 w 1139
if 6 w 1141
I 10 w 1142
said 1 w 1146
to 8 w 1148
him 4 w 1151
My 1 w 1154
friend 2 w 1160
I 11 w 1162
too 1 w 1165
have 5 w 1169
relatives 4 w 1178
for 3 w 1182
I 12 w 1183
am 4 w 1185
as 11 w 1188
Homer 1 w 1193
has 2 w 1196
it 7 w 1198
not 3 w 1202
born 1 w 1206
of 6 w 1208
an 25 w 1210
oak 1 w 1213
or 11 w 1215
a 95 w 1216
rock 1 w 1220
Hom 2 w 1224
Od 1 w 1227
19 1 w 1230
163 1 w 1234
but 4 w 1238
of 7 w 1240
human 1 w 1245
parents 1 w 1252
so 11 w 1255
that 5 w 1259
I 13 w 1260
have 6 w 1264
relatives 5 w 1273
and 14 w 1276
men 5 w 1280
of 8 w 1282
Athens 1 w 1288
I 14 w 1290
have 7 w 1294
three 1 w 1299
sons 1 w 1303
one 6 w 1307
nearly 1 w 1313
grown 1 w 1318
up 4 w 1320
and 15 w 1324
two 1 w 1327
still 1 w 1332
children 2 w 1340
but 5 w 1344
nevertheless 1 w 1356
I 15 w 1357
shall 1 w 1362
not 4 w 1365
bring 1 w 1370
any 6 w 1373
of 9 w 1375
them 2 w 1379
here 4 w 1383
and 16 w 1386
beg 2 w 1389
you 5 w 1392
to 10 w 1394
acquit 1 w 1400
me 15 w 1402
And 2 w 1406
why 1 w 1409
shall 2 w 1414
I 16 w 1415
not 5 w 1418
do 4 w 1420
so 13 w 1422
Not 1 w 1426
because 1 w 1433
I 17 w 1434
am 5 w 1436
stubborn 1 w 1444
Athenians 1 w 1454
or 13 w 1457
lack 1 w 1461
respect 1 w 1468
for 4 w 1471
you 6 w 1474
Whether 1 w 1482
I 18 w 1483
fear 1 w 1487
death 1 w 1492
or 15 w 1494
not 6 w 1497
is 15 w 1499
another 1 w 1506
matter 1 w 1512
but 6 w 1516
for 5 w 1519
the 27 w 1522
sake 1 w 1526
of 10 w 1528
my 2 w 1530
good 1 w 1534
name 1 w 1538
and 17 w 1541
yours 1 w 1546
and 18 w 1549
that 6 w 1553
of 11 w 1555
the 28 w 1558
whole 1 w 1563
state 1 w 1568
I 19 w 1570
think 2 w 1575
it 9 w 1577
is 16 w 1579
not 8 w 1582
right 2 w 1587
for 6 w 1590
me 17 w 1592
to 11 w 1594
do 5 w 1596
any 7 w 1599
of 12 w 1601
these 3 w 1606
things 2 w 1612
in 21 w 1614
view 1 w 1618
of 13 w 1620
my 3 w 1622
age 1 w 1625
and 19 w 1628
my 4 w 1630
reputation 1 w 1640
whether 1 w 1648
deserved 1 w 1656
or 18 w 1658
not 9 w 1661
for 7 w 1665
at 18 w 1667
any 8 w 1670
rate 1 w 1674
the 31 w 1677
opinion 1 w 1684
prevails 1 w 1692
that 7 w 1696
Socrates 1 w 1704
is 17 w 1706
in 23 w 1708
some 5 w 1712
way 1 w 1715
superior 1 w 1723
to 12 w 1725
most 1 w 1729
men 6 w 1732
