κνημίς -ῖδος, ἡ [κνήμη.] 1 A gaiter or legging, doubtless of leather or stuff (in Il. 18.613, Il. 21.592 tin being used as the most pliable metal) worn by warriors on the lower leg as a protection against chafing by the edge of the shield: κνημῖδας περὶ κνήμῃσιν ἔθηκεν Il. 3.330=Il. 11.17=Il. 16.131=Il. 19.369.
