ἄν

I εἰ, regularly with the subjunctive. In Attic εἰ ἄν is contracted into ἐάν, ἤν, or ἄν ( ᾱ) (q. v.): Hom. has generally εἴ κε (or αἴ κε), sts. ἤν, once εἰ δʼ ἄν Il. 3.288, twice εἴπερ ἄν 5.224, 232. The protasis expresses either future condition (with apod. of fut. time) or general condition (with apod. of repeated action): εἰ δέ κεν ὣς ἔρξῃς καί τοι πείθωνται Ἀχαιοί, γνώσῃ ἔπειθʼ ὅς . . if thus thou shalt do . . , ib. 2.364; ἢν ἐγγὺς ἔλθῃ θάνατος, οὐδεὶς βούλεται θνῄσκειν if death (ever) come near . . , E. Alc. 671.

τιμή

III compensation, satisfaction, penalty, τιμὴν ἀρνύμενοι Μενελάῳ . . πρὸς Τρώων Il. 1.159, cf. 5.552; ἀποτινέμεν, τίνειν τιμήν τινι, pay or make it, 3.286, 288; τιμὴν ἄγειν Od. 22.57; Πάτροκλον, ὃς κεῖται ἐμῆς ἕνεκʼ ἐνθάδε τιμῆς Il. 17.92, cf. Od. 14.70, 117; οὐ σὴ . . ἡ τ. the penalty is not yours, Pl. Grg. 497b. (The spelling [ τῑ- not τει- IG 1(2).347.33, etc.] and the majority of the senses show that τιμή is cogn. with τίω ‘value, honourʼ; sense III perh. arose from a later association with τίνω.)

ποινή

ποινή -ῆς, ἡ. 1 A blood-price, a sum paid as compensation and satisfaction by a homicide to the family of the slain man : εἵνεκα ποινῆς ἀνδρὸς ἀποφθιμένου Il. 18.498. Cf. Il. 9.633, 636. In reference to requital or vengeance for men slain in battle Il. 13.659, Il. 14.483, Il. 16.398, Il. 21.28 (to pay the price of his blood in their persons). So of the vengeance taken on the Cyclops Od. 23.312. 2 Something given in recompense for loss or deprivation, amends : ποινὴν γανυμήδεος (for the loss of . . .) Il. 5.266. Cf. Il. 17.207. A sum to be paid by an enemy as compensation for loss or damage, an indemnity : μαχήσομαι εἵνεκα ποινῆς Il. 3.290 (= τιμήν 286, 288).

Il. 3.288, 459, Il. 5.552 : Od. 22.57. 2 The value or estimation in which a person is held, position in a scale of honour, estimation, regard : μή μοι πατέρας ὁμοίῃ ἔνθεο τιμῇ Il. 4.410. Cf. Il. 9.319, Il. 23.649 (see λανθάνω 1), Il. 24.57, 66. 3 Due estimation or regard, respect, honour : πόρε καὶ σὺ Διὸς κούρῃσιν ἕπεσθαι τιμήν Il. 9.514. 4 Dignity, honour, worship : θεοί, τῶν περ καὶ μείζων τιμή Il. 9.498. Cf. Il. 1.278, Il. 17.251 : Od. 5.335, Od. 8.480, Od. 11.302, 304. 5 The dignity, honour or prerogative attaching to an office or position : τιμῆς βασιληΐδος ἥμισυ Il. 6.193. Cf. Il. 2.197, Il. 9.616, Il. 15.189 (his share of dignity or prerogative), Il. 20.181 : Od. 1.117, Od. 11.495, 503, Od. 24.30. 6 Honour, distinction, esteem, renown : τιμήν μοι ἐγγυαλίξαι Il. 1.353, ὄφρʼ ἂν Ἀχαιοὶ υἱὸν ἐμὸν τείσωσιν ὀφέλλωσίν τέ ἑ τιμῇ 510 (or perh. this should come under (1), make him rich with recompense). Cf. Il. 9.608, Il. 16.84. Honour or distinction conferred by some particular circumstance : ξεῖνος ἐμός ἐστιν, ἕκαστος δʼ ἔμμορε τιμῆς (shares the honour of entertaining him) Od. 11.338.
