Μενεσθεύς (δῖος, μεγάθυμος, πλήξιππος). Son of Peteos and leader of the Athenians Il. 2.552 , Il. 4.327; in charge of part of the wall Il. 12.331, 373; Il. 13.195, 690, Il. 15.331.
ἡγεμονεύω [ἡγεμών.] 1 To act as guide or pilot, show the way: θεός τις ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 9.142, Od. 10.141. Cf. Od. 17.194. With dat., to guide (a person), show (him) the way: δεῦρό οἱ ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 17.372. Cf. Od. 10.445. With cognate acc., to show (the way): ὁδὸν ἡγεμονεύσω Od. 6.261, Od. 7.30. Cf. Od. 10.501. 2 To lead the way, act as leader, take the lead: Τηλέμαχος πρόσθʼ ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 22.400. With dat.: τοῖσιν ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 3.386, Od. 8.4 = 421, Od. 23.293. With dat. and cognate acc.: τοῖσιν ὁδὸν ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 24.225. Sim.: ὅτʼ ἀνὴρ ὀχετηγὸς ὕδατι ῥόον ἡγεμονεύῃ (guides the flow) Il. 21.258. 3 To lead the way, give a lead, in a course of action: τῇ ἴμεν ᾗ κε σὺ ἡγεμονεύῃς Il. 15.46. 4 To precede a person by an interval of time: Ὀδυσσεὺς ὕστερος, αὐτὰρ Τηλέμαχος πρόσθʼ ἡγεμόνευεν Od. 24.155. 5 To be the leader, commander or chief of. a With genit.: λοκρῶν Il. 2.527, τῆς ἑτέρης [στιχός] Il. 16.179.
