Let not such considerations as these distress you: I shall live in discredit, and be nobody anywhere. For if discredit be an evil, you can no more be involved in evil through another, than in baseness. Is it any business of yours, then, to get power, or to be admitted to an entertainment? By no means. How then, after all, is this discredit? And how is it true that you will be .nobody anywhere; when you ought to be somebody in those things only which are within your own power, in which you may be of the greatest consequence? But my friends will be unassisted. What do you mean by unassisted? They will not have money from you; nor will you make them Roman citizens. Who told you, then, that these are

p.2226
among the things within our own power, and not rather the affairs of others? And who can give to another the things which he himself has not? Well, but get them, then, that we too may have a share. If I can get them with the preservation of my own honor and fidelity and self-respect, show me the way, and I will get them; but if you require me to lose my own proper good, that you may gain what is no good, consider how unreasonable and foolish you are. Besides, which would you rather have, a sum of money, or a faithful and honorable friend? Rather assist me, then, to gain this character, than require me to do those things by which I may lose it. Well, but my country, say you, as far as depends upon me, will be unassisted. Here, again, what assistance is this you mean? It will not have porticos nor baths of your providing? And what signifies that? Why, neither does a smith provide it with shoes, nor a shoemaker with arms. It is enough if every one fully performs his own proper business. And were you to supply it with another faithful and honorable citizen, would not he be of use to it? Yes. Therefore neither are you yourself useless to it. What place, then, say you, shall I hold in the state? Whatever you can hold with the preservation of your fidelity and honor. But if, by desiring to be useful to that, you lose these, how can you serve your country, when you have become faithless and shameless?
p.2227

Is any one preferred before you at an entertainment, or in courtesies, or in confidential intercourse? If these things are good, you ought to rejoice that he. has them; and if they are evil, do not be grieved that you have them not. And remember that you cannot be permitted to rival others in externals, without using the same means to obtain them. For how can he who will not haunt the door of any man, will not attend him, will not praise him, have an equal share with him who does these things? You are unjust, then, and unreasonable, if you are unwilling to pay the price for which these things are sold, and would have them for nothing. For how much are lettuces sold? An obolus, for instance. If another, then, paying an obolus, takes the lettuces, and you, not paying it, go without them, do not imagine that he has gained any advantage over you. For as he has the lettuces, so you have the obolus which you did not give. So, in the present case, you have not been invited to such a persons entertainment, because you have not paid him the price for which a supper is sold. It is sold for praise; it is sold for attendance. Give him, then, the value, if it be for your advantage. But if you would at the same time not pay the one, and yet receive the other, you are unreasonable and foolish. Have you nothing, then, in place of the supper? Yes, indeed you have: not

p.2228
to praise him whom you do not like to praise; not to bear the insolence of his lackeys.

The will of Nature may be learned from things upon which we are all agreed. As, when our neighbors boy has broken a cup, or the like, we are ready at once to say, These are casualties that will happen; be assured, then, that when your own cup is likewise broken, you ought to be affected just as when anothers cup was broken. Now apply this to greater things. Is the child or wife of another dead? There is no one who would not say, This is an accident of mortality. But if any ones own child happens to die, it is immediately, Alas ! how wretched am I! It should be always remembered how we are affected on hearing the same thing concerning others.

Yes 2 w 2821
indeed 1 w 2828
you 44 w 2831
have 12 w 2835
not 25 w 2839
to 21 w 2841
praise 3 w 2847
him 7 w 2850
whom 1 w 2854
you 45 w 2857
do 8 w 2859
not 26 w 2862
like 1 w 2866
to 22 w 2868
praise 4 w 2874
not 27 w 2878

The 3 w 2912

Nature 1 w 2924
may 5 w 2927
be 21 w 2929
learned 1 w 2936
from 2 w 2940
things 8 w 2946
upon 2 w 2950
which 9 w 2955
we 6 w 2957
are 14 w 2960
all 4 w 2963
agreed 1 w 2969
As 1 w 2972
when 3 w 2977

cup 1 w 3006
or 30 w 3009
the 61 w 3012
like 2 w 3016
we 7 w 3019
are 15 w 3022
ready 1 w 3027
at 31 w 3029
once 1 w 3033
to 24 w 3035
say 3 w 3038
These 1 w 3044
are 16 w 3047
casualties 1 w 3057
that 11 w 3061
will 13 w 3065
happen 1 w 3071
be 22 w 3074
assured 1 w 3081
then 11 w 3086
that 12 w 3091
when 4 w 3095
your 8 w 3099
own 6 w 3102
cup 2 w 3105

likewise 1 w 3115
broken 2 w 3121
you 47 w 3125
ought 3 w 3130
to 25 w 3132
be 23 w 3134
affected 1 w 3142
just 2 w 3146
as 22 w 3148
when 5 w 3152
another 5 w 3159
s 187 w 3161
cup 3 w 3164
was 1 w 3167
broken 3 w 3173
Now 1 w 3177
apply 1 w 3182
this 4 w 3186
to 26 w 3188
greater 1 w 3195
things 9 w 3201
Is 3 w 3204

There 2 w 3237

This 1 w 3263
is 34 w 3265
an 54 w 3267
accident 1 w 3275

But 4 w 3290

to 27 w 3317
die 1 w 3320
it 38 w 3323
is 35 w 3325
immediately 1 w 3336
Alas 1 w 3341
how 7 w 3345
wretched 1 w 3353

It 4 w 3359
should 1 w 3365
be 24 w 3367
always 1 w 3373
remembered 1 w 3383
how 8 w 3386
we 8 w 3388
are 17 w 3391
affected 2 w 3399
on 28 w 3401
hearing 1 w 3408
the 66 w 3411
same 3 w 3415
thing 12 w 3420
concerning 1 w 3430
others 3 w 3436
