Now the multitude of the Galileans had that great kindness for me, and fidelity to me, that when their cities were taken by force, and their wives and children carried into slavery, they did not so deeply lament for their own calamities, as they were solicitous for my preservation. But when John saw this, he envied me, and wrote to me, desiring that I would give him leave to come down, and make use of the hot-baths of Tiberias for the recovery of the health of his body. Accordingly, I did not hinder him, as having no suspicion of any wicked designs of his; and I wrote to those to whom I had committed the administration of the affairs of Tiberius by name, that they should provide a lodging for John, and for such as should come with him, and should procure him what necessaries soever he should stand in need of. Now at this time my abode was in a village of Galilee, which is named Cans.

17

But when John was come to the city of Tiberias, he persuaded the men to revolt from their fidelity to me, and to adhere to him; and many of them gladly received that invitation of his, as ever fond of innovations, and by nature disposed to changes, and delighting in seditions; but they were chiefly Justus and his father Pistus, that were earnest for their revolt from me, and their adherence to John. But I came upon them, and prevented them; for a messenger had come to me from Silas, whom I had made governor of Tiberias, as I have said already, and had told me of the inclinations of the people of Tiberias, and advised me to make haste thither; for that, if I made any delay, the city would come under anothers jurisdiction. Upon the receipt of this letter of Silas, I took two hundred men along with me, and traveled all night, having sent before a messenger to let the people of Tiberias know that I was coming to them. When I came near to the city, which was early in the morning, the multitude came out to meet me; and John came with them, and saluted me, but in a most disturbed manner, as being afraid that my coming was to call him to an account for what I was now sensible he was doing. So he, in great haste, went to his lodging. But when I was in the open place of the city, having dismissed the guards I had about me, excepting one, and ten armed men that were with him, I attempted to make a speech to the multitude of the people of Tiberias: and, standing on a certain elevated place, I entreated them not to be so hasty in their revolt; for that such a change in their behavior would be to their reproach, and that they would then justly be suspected by those that should be their governors hereafter, as if they were not likely to be faithful to them neither.

18

But before I had spoken all I designed, I heard one of my own domestics bidding me come down, for that it was not a proper time to take care of retaining the good-will of the people of Tiberias, but to provide for my own safety, and escape my enemies there; for John had chosen the most trusty of those armed men that were about him out of those thousand that he had with him, and had given them orders when he sent them, to kill me, having learned that I was alone, excepting some of my domestics. So those that were sent came as they were ordered, and they had executed what they came about, had I not leaped down from the elevation I stood on, and with one of my guards, whose name was James, been carried [out of the crowd] upon the back of one Herod of Tiberias, and guided by him down to the lake, where I seized a ship, and got into it, and escaped my enemies unexpectedly, and came to Tarichese.

19

Now, as soon as the inhabitants of that city understood the perfidiousness of the people of Tiberias, they were greatly provoked at them. So they snatched up their arms, and desired me to be their leader against them; for they said they would avenge their commanders cause upon them. They also carried the report of what had been done to me to all the Galileans, and eagerly endeavored to irritate them against the people of Tiberias, and desired that vast numbers of them would get together, and come to them, that they might act in concert with their commander, what should be determined as fit to be done. Accordingly, the Galileans came to me in great numbers, from all parts, with their weapons, and besought me to assault Tiberias, to take it by force, and to demolish it, till it lay even with the ground, and then to make slaves of its inhabitants, with their wives and children. Those that were Josephuss friends also, and had escaped out of Tiberias, gave him the same advice. But I did not comply with them, thinking it a terrible thing to begin a civil war among them; for I thought that this contention ought not to proceed further than words; nay, I told them that it was not for their own advantage to do what they would have me to do, while the Romans expected no other than that we should destroy one another by our mutual seditions. And by saying this, I put a stop to the anger of the Galileans.

20

But now John was afraid for himself, since his treachery had proved unsuccessful. So he took the armed men that were about him, and removed from Tiberias to Gischala, and wrote to me to apologize for himself concerning What had been done, as if it had been done without his approbation, and desired me to have no suspicion of him to his disadvantage. He also added oaths and certain horrible curses upon himself, and supposed he should be thereby believed in the points he wrote about to me.

what 3 w 2635
they 9 w 2639
came 6 w 2643
about 3 w 2648
had 12 w 2652
I 21 w 2653
not 7 w 2656
leaped 1 w 2662
down 3 w 2666
from 4 w 2670
the 60 w 2673
elevation 1 w 2682
I 22 w 2683
stood 1 w 2688
on 18 w 2690
and 30 w 2694
with 6 w 2698
one 4 w 2701
of 33 w 2703
my 8 w 2705
guards 2 w 2711
whose 1 w 2717
name 3 w 2721
was 11 w 2724
James 1 w 2729
been 1 w 2734
carried 2 w 2741
out 6 w 2745
of 34 w 2747
the 61 w 2750
crowd 1 w 2755
upon 2 w 2760
the 62 w 2763
back 1 w 2767
of 35 w 2769
one 5 w 2772
Herod 1 w 2777
of 36 w 2779
Tiberias 8 w 2787
and 31 w 2791
guided 1 w 2797
by 5 w 2799
him 10 w 2802
down 4 w 2806
to 36 w 2808
the 63 w 2811
lake 1 w 2815
where 1 w 2821
I 23 w 2822
seized 1 w 2828
a 215 w 2829
ship 1 w 2833
and 32 w 2837
got 1 w 2840
into 2 w 2844
it 26 w 2846
and 33 w 2850
escaped 1 w 2857
my 9 w 2859
enemies 2 w 2866
unexpectedly 1 w 2878
and 34 w 2882
came 7 w 2886
to 38 w 2888
Tarichese 1 w 2897
Now 3 w 2901
as 33 w 2904
soon 1 w 2908
as 34 w 2910
the 64 w 2913
inhabitants 1 w 2924
of 37 w 2926
that 19 w 2930
city 5 w 2934
understood 1 w 2944
the 65 w 2947
perfidiousness 1 w 2961
of 38 w 2963
the 66 w 2966
people 5 w 2972
of 39 w 2974
Tiberias 9 w 2982
they 10 w 2987
were 10 w 2991
greatly 1 w 2998
provoked 1 w 3006
at 39 w 3008
them 10 w 3012
So 3 w 3015
they 11 w 3019
snatched 1 w 3027
up 3 w 3029
their 11 w 3034
arms 1 w 3038
and 35 w 3042
desired 1 w 3049
me 48 w 3051
to 40 w 3053
be 22 w 3055
their 12 w 3060
leader 1 w 3066
against 1 w 3073
them 11 w 3077
for 18 w 3081
they 12 w 3085
said 2 w 3089
they 13 w 3093
would 5 w 3098
avenge 1 w 3104
their 13 w 3109
commander 1 w 3118
s 160 w 3120
cause 1 w 3125
upon 3 w 3129
them 12 w 3133
They 1 w 3138
also 1 w 3142
carried 3 w 3149
the 77 w 3152
report 1 w 3158
of 40 w 3160
what 4 w 3164
had 13 w 3167
been 2 w 3171
done 1 w 3175
to 41 w 3177
me 49 w 3179
to 42 w 3181
all 4 w 3184
the 78 w 3187
Galileans 2 w 3196
and 37 w 3200
eagerly 1 w 3207
endeavored 1 w 3217
to 43 w 3219
irritate 1 w 3227
them 13 w 3231
against 2 w 3238
the 80 w 3241
people 6 w 3247
of 41 w 3249
Tiberias 10 w 3257
and 38 w 3261
desired 2 w 3268
that 20 w 3272
vast 1 w 3276
numbers 1 w 3283
of 42 w 3285
them 14 w 3289
would 6 w 3294
get 1 w 3297
together 1 w 3305
and 39 w 3309
come 7 w 3313
to 45 w 3315
them 15 w 3319
that 21 w 3324
they 14 w 3328
might 1 w 3333
act 1 w 3336
in 43 w 3338
concert 1 w 3345
with 7 w 3349
their 14 w 3354
commander 2 w 3363
what 5 w 3368
should 6 w 3374
be 26 w 3376
determined 1 w 3386
as 38 w 3388
fit 1 w 3391
to 46 w 3393
be 27 w 3395
done 2 w 3399
Accordingly 2 w 3411
the 86 w 3415
Galileans 3 w 3424
came 8 w 3428
to 47 w 3430
me 52 w 3432
in 46 w 3434
great 4 w 3439
numbers 2 w 3446
from 5 w 3451
all 5 w 3454
parts 1 w 3459
with 8 w 3464
their 15 w 3469
weapons 1 w 3476
and 41 w 3480
besought 1 w 3488
me 53 w 3490
to 48 w 3492
assault 1 w 3499
Tiberias 11 w 3507
to 49 w 3510
take 3 w 3514
it 33 w 3516
by 6 w 3518
force 2 w 3523
and 42 w 3527
to 50 w 3529
demolish 1 w 3537
it 34 w 3539
till 1 w 3544
it 35 w 3546
lay 2 w 3549
even 2 w 3553
with 9 w 3557
the 88 w 3560
ground 1 w 3566
and 43 w 3570
then 2 w 3574
to 51 w 3576
make 4 w 3580
slaves 1 w 3586
of 43 w 3588
its 1 w 3591
inhabitants 2 w 3602
with 10 w 3607
their 16 w 3612
wives 2 w 3617
and 44 w 3620
children 2 w 3628
Those 1 w 3634
that 22 w 3638
were 11 w 3642
Josephus 1 w 3650
s 188 w 3652
friends 1 w 3659
also 2 w 3663
and 45 w 3667
had 14 w 3670
escaped 2 w 3677
out 7 w 3680
of 44 w 3682
Tiberias 12 w 3690
gave 1 w 3695
him 11 w 3698
the 91 w 3701
same 1 w 3705
advice 1 w 3711
But 6 w 3715
I 24 w 3716
did 3 w 3719
not 8 w 3722
comply 1 w 3728
with 11 w 3732
them 16 w 3736
thinking 1 w 3745
it 41 w 3747
a 292 w 3748
terrible 1 w 3756
thing 1 w 3761
to 52 w 3763
begin 1 w 3768
a 293 w 3769
civil 1 w 3774
war 1 w 3777
among 1 w 3782
them 17 w 3786
for 20 w 3790
I 25 w 3791
thought 1 w 3798
that 23 w 3802
this 4 w 3806
contention 1 w 3816
ought 3 w 3821
not 9 w 3824
to 53 w 3826
proceed 1 w 3833
further 1 w 3840
than 1 w 3844
words 1 w 3849
nay 1 w 3853
I 26 w 3855
told 2 w 3859
them 18 w 3863
that 24 w 3867
it 42 w 3869
was 12 w 3872
not 10 w 3875
for 21 w 3878
their 17 w 3883
own 8 w 3886
advantage 1 w 3895
to 55 w 3897
do 10 w 3899
what 6 w 3903
they 15 w 3907
would 7 w 3912
have 2 w 3916
me 55 w 3918
to 56 w 3920
do 11 w 3922
while 1 w 3928
the 98 w 3931
Romans 1 w 3937
expected 2 w 3945
no 17 w 3947
other 2 w 3952
than 2 w 3956
that 25 w 3960
we 14 w 3962
should 7 w 3968
destroy 1 w 3975
one 8 w 3978
another 2 w 3985
by 7 w 3987
our 1 w 3990
mutual 1 w 3996
seditions 2 w 4005
And 1 w 4009
by 8 w 4011
saying 1 w 4017
this 5 w 4021
I 27 w 4023
put 1 w 4026
a 312 w 4027
stop 1 w 4031
to 58 w 4033
the 101 w 4036
anger 1 w 4041
of 45 w 4043
the 102 w 4046
Galileans 4 w 4055
But 7 w 4059
now 3 w 4062
John 7 w 4066
was 13 w 4069
afraid 2 w 4075
for 22 w 4078
himself 1 w 4085
since 1 w 4091
his 11 w 4094
treachery 1 w 4103
had 15 w 4106
proved 1 w 4112
unsuccessful 1 w 4124
So 4 w 4127
he 126 w 4129
took 2 w 4133
the 103 w 4136
armed 3 w 4141
men 6 w 4144
that 26 w 4148
were 12 w 4152
about 4 w 4157
him 13 w 4160
and 46 w 4164
removed 1 w 4171
from 6 w 4175
Tiberias 13 w 4183
to 60 w 4185
Gischala 1 w 4193
and 47 w 4197
wrote 3 w 4202
to 61 w 4204
me 58 w 4206
to 62 w 4208
apologize 1 w 4217
for 23 w 4220
himself 2 w 4227
concerning 1 w 4237
What 1 w 4241
had 16 w 4244
been 3 w 4248
done 3 w 4252
as 45 w 4255
if 3 w 4257
it 44 w 4259
had 17 w 4262
been 4 w 4266
done 4 w 4270
without 1 w 4277
his 12 w 4280
approbation 1 w 4291
and 48 w 4295
desired 3 w 4302
me 59 w 4304
to 63 w 4306
have 3 w 4310
no 20 w 4312
suspicion 2 w 4321
of 46 w 4323
him 15 w 4326
to 64 w 4328
his 13 w 4331
disadvantage 1 w 4343
He 2 w 4346
also 3 w 4350
added 1 w 4355
oaths 1 w 4360
and 49 w 4363
certain 2 w 4370
horrible 1 w 4378
curses 1 w 4384
upon 4 w 4388
himself 3 w 4395
and 50 w 4399
supposed 1 w 4407
he 128 w 4409
should 8 w 4415
be 36 w 4417
thereby 1 w 4424
believed 1 w 4432
in 56 w 4434
the 105 w 4437
points 1 w 4443
he 131 w 4445
wrote 4 w 4450
about 5 w 4455
to 65 w 4457
me 60 w 4459
