There were some bold young men of the village of Dabaritta, who observed that the wife of Ptolemy, the kings procurator, was to make a progress over the great plain with a mighty attendance, and with some horsemen that followed as a guard to them, and this out of a country that was subject to the king and queen, into the jurisdiction of the Romans; and fell upon them on a sudden, and obliged the wife of Ptolemy to fly away, and plundered all the carriages. They also came to me to Tarichese, with four mules loading of garments, and other furniture; and the weight of the silver they brought was not small, and there were five hundred pieces of gold also. Now I had a mind to preserve these spoils for Ptolemy, who was my countryman; and it is prohibited [*] by our laws even to spoil our enemies; so I said to those that brought these spoils, that they ought to be kept, in order to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem with them when they came to be sold. But the young men took it very ill that they did not receive a part of those spoils for themselves, as they expected to have done; so they went among the villages in the neighborhood of Tiberias, and told the people that I was going to betray their country to the Romans, and that I used deceitful language to them, when I said, that what had been thus gotten by rapine should be kept for the rebuilding of the walls of the city of Jerusalem; although I had resolved to restore these spoils again to their former owner. And indeed they were herein not mistaken as to my intentions; for when I had gotten clear of them, I sent for two of the principal men, Dassion, and Janneus the son of Levi, persons that were among the chief friends of the king, and commanded them to take the furniture that had been plundered, and to send it to him; and I threatened that I would order them to be put to death by way of punishment, if they discovered this my command to any other person.

27

Now, when all Galilee was filled with this rumor, that their country was about to be betrayed by me to the Romans, and when all men were exasperated against me, and ready to bring me to punishment, the inhabitants of Tarichee did also themselves suppose that what the young men said was true, and persuaded my guards and armed men to leave me when I was asleep, and to come presently to the hippodrome, in order there to take counsel against me their commander. And when they had prevailed with them, and they were gotten together, they found there a great company assembled already, who all joined in one clamor, to bring the man who was so wicked to them as to betray them, to his due punishment; and it was Jesus, the son of Sapphias, who principally set them on. He was ruler in Tiberias, a wicked man, and naturally disposed to make disturbances in matters of consequence; a seditious person he was indeed, and an innovator beyond every body else. He then took the laws of Moses into his hands, and came into the midst of the people, and said, O my fellow citizens! if you are not disposed to hate Josephus on your own account, have regard, however, to these laws of your country, which your commander-in-chief is going to betray; hate him therefore on both these accounts, and bring the man who hath acted thus insolently, to his deserved punishment.

28

When he had said this, and the multitude had openly applauded him for what he had said, he took some of the armed men, and made haste away to the house in which I lodged, as if he would kill me immediately, while I was wholly insensible of all till this disturbance happened; and by reason of the pains I had been taking, was fallen fast asleep. But Simon, who was intrusted with the care of my body, and was the only person that stayed with me, and saw the violent incursion the citizens made upon me, awaked me, and told me of the danger I was in, and desired me to let him kill me, that I might die bravely and like a general, before my enemies came in, and forced me [to kill myself], or killed me themselves. Thus did he discourse to me; but I committed the care of my life to God, and made haste to go out to the multitude. Accordingly, I put on a black garment, and hung my sword at my neck, and went by such a different way to the hippodrome, wherein I thought none of my adversaries would meet me; so I appeared among them on the sudden, and fell down flat on the earth, and bedewed the ground with my tears: then I seemed to them all an object of compassion. And when I perceived the change that was made in the multitude, I tried to divide their opinions before the armed men should return from my house; so I granted them that I had been as wicked as they supposed me to be; but still I entreated them to let me first inform them for what use I had kept that money which arose from the plunder, and, that they might then kill me if they pleased: and upon the multitudes ordering me to speak, the armed men came upon me, and when they saw me, they ran to kill me; but when the multitude bade them hold their hands, they complied, and expected that as soon as I should own to them that I kept the money for the king, it would be looked on as a confession of my treason, and they should then be allowed to kill me.

29

When, therefore, silence was made by the whole multitude, I spake thus to them: O my countrymen! I refuse not to die, if justice so require. However, I am desirous to tell you the truth of this matter before I die; for as I know that this city of yours [Tarichee] was a city of great hospitality, and filled with abundance of such men as have left their own countries, and are come hither to be partakers of your fortune, whatever it be, I had a mind to build walls about it, out of this money, for which you are so angry with me, while yet it was to be expended in building your own walls. Upon my saying this, the people of Taricheae and the strangers cried out, that they gave me thanks, and desired me to be of good courage, although the Galileans and the people of Tiberias continued in their wrath against me, insomuch that there arose a tumult among them, while some threatened to kill me, and some bade me not to regard them; but when I promised them that I would build them walls at Tiberias, and at other cities that wanted them, they gave credit to what I promised, and returned every one to his own home. So I escaped the forementioned danger, beyond all my hopes, and returned to my own house, accompanied with my friends, and twenty armed men also.

30

However, these robbers and other authors of this tumult, who were afraid, on their own account, lest I should punish them for what they had done, took six hundred armed men, and came to the house where I abode, in order to set it on fire. When this their insult was told me, I thought it indecent for me to run away, and I resolved to expose myself to danger, and to act with some boldness; so I gave order to shut the doors, and went up into an upper room, and desired that they would send in some of their men to receive the money [from the spoils] for I told them they would then have no occasion to be angry with me; and when they had sent in one of the boldest of them all, I had him whipped severely, and I commanded that one of his hands should be cut off, and hung about his neck; and in this case was he put out to those that sent him. At which procedure of mine they were greatly affrighted, and in no small consternation, and were afraid that they should themselves be served in like manner, if they staid there; for they supposed that I had in the house more armed men than they had themselves; so they ran away immediately, while I, by the use of this stratagem, escaped this their second treacherous design against me.

of 28 w 3162
the 86 w 3165

O 1 w 3181
my 9 w 3183
fellow 1 w 3189
citizens 1 w 3197
if 5 w 3200

him 2 w 3342
therefore 1 w 3351
on 26 w 3353
both 1 w 3357
these 5 w 3362
accounts 1 w 3370
and 35 w 3374
bring 3 w 3379
the 90 w 3382
man 13 w 3385
who 7 w 3388
hath 1 w 3392
acted 1 w 3397
thus 2 w 3401
insolently 1 w 3411
to 56 w 3414
his 11 w 3417
deserved 1 w 3425
punishment 4 w 3435
When 1 w 3440
he 111 w 3442
had 10 w 3445
said 5 w 3449
this 6 w 3453
and 36 w 3457
the 91 w 3460
multitude 1 w 3469
had 11 w 3472
openly 1 w 3478
applauded 1 w 3487
him 3 w 3490
for 13 w 3493
what 3 w 3497
he 113 w 3499
had 12 w 3502
said 6 w 3506
he 114 w 3509
took 3 w 3513
some 3 w 3517
of 30 w 3519
the 92 w 3522
armed 2 w 3527
men 15 w 3530
and 37 w 3534
made 2 w 3538
haste 1 w 3543
away 2 w 3547
to 58 w 3549
the 93 w 3552
house 1 w 3557
in 49 w 3559
which 4 w 3564
I 13 w 3565
lodged 1 w 3571
as 31 w 3574
if 6 w 3576
he 117 w 3578
would 2 w 3583
kill 1 w 3587
me 36 w 3589
immediately 1 w 3600
while 2 w 3606
I 14 w 3607
was 15 w 3610
wholly 1 w 3616
insensible 1 w 3626
of 31 w 3628
all 12 w 3631
till 1 w 3635
this 7 w 3639
disturbance 2 w 3650
happened 1 w 3658
and 38 w 3662
by 6 w 3664
reason 1 w 3670
of 32 w 3672
the 94 w 3675
pains 1 w 3680
I 15 w 3681
had 13 w 3684
been 4 w 3688
taking 1 w 3694
was 16 w 3698
fallen 1 w 3704
fast 1 w 3708
asleep 2 w 3714
But 2 w 3718
Simon 1 w 3723
who 9 w 3727
was 17 w 3730
intrusted 1 w 3739
with 8 w 3743
the 95 w 3746
care 1 w 3750
of 33 w 3752
my 10 w 3754
body 2 w 3758
and 39 w 3762
was 18 w 3765
the 96 w 3768
only 1 w 3772
person 4 w 3778
that 17 w 3782
stayed 1 w 3788
with 9 w 3792
me 38 w 3794
and 40 w 3798
saw 1 w 3801
the 97 w 3804
violent 1 w 3811
incursion 1 w 3820
the 98 w 3823
citizens 2 w 3831
made 3 w 3835
upon 2 w 3839
me 39 w 3841
awaked 1 w 3848
me 40 w 3850
and 41 w 3854
told 2 w 3858
me 41 w 3860
of 34 w 3862
the 99 w 3865
danger 1 w 3871
I 16 w 3872
was 19 w 3875
in 55 w 3877
and 42 w 3881
desired 1 w 3888
me 42 w 3890
to 60 w 3892
let 1 w 3895
him 4 w 3898
kill 2 w 3902
me 43 w 3904
that 18 w 3909
I 17 w 3910
might 4 w 3915
die 1 w 3918
bravely 1 w 3925
and 43 w 3928
like 1 w 3932
a 303 w 3933
general 1 w 3940
before 3 w 3947
my 11 w 3949
enemies 3 w 3956
came 4 w 3960
in 56 w 3962
and 44 w 3966
forced 1 w 3972
me 45 w 3974
to 61 w 3977
kill 3 w 3981
myself 1 w 3987
or 31 w 3991
killed 1 w 3997
me 46 w 3999
themselves 3 w 4009
Thus 1 w 4014
did 3 w 4017
he 125 w 4019
discourse 1 w 4028
to 62 w 4030
me 47 w 4032
but 1 w 4036
I 18 w 4037
committed 1 w 4046
the 101 w 4049
care 2 w 4053
of 35 w 4055
my 13 w 4057
life 2 w 4061
to 63 w 4063
God 1 w 4066
and 45 w 4070
made 4 w 4074
haste 2 w 4079
to 64 w 4081
go 7 w 4083
out 3 w 4086
to 65 w 4088
the 102 w 4091
multitude 2 w 4100
Accordingly 1 w 4112
I 19 w 4114
put 2 w 4117
on 33 w 4119
a 311 w 4120
black 1 w 4125
garment 2 w 4132
and 46 w 4136
hung 1 w 4140
my 14 w 4142
sword 1 w 4147
at 41 w 4149
my 15 w 4151
neck 1 w 4155
and 47 w 4159
went 2 w 4163
by 7 w 4165
such 1 w 4169
a 317 w 4170
different 1 w 4179
way 4 w 4182
to 66 w 4184
the 103 w 4187
hippodrome 2 w 4197
wherein 1 w 4205
I 20 w 4206
thought 1 w 4213
none 1 w 4217
of 36 w 4219
my 16 w 4221
adversaries 1 w 4232
would 3 w 4237
meet 1 w 4241
me 51 w 4243
so 20 w 4246
I 21 w 4247
appeared 1 w 4255
among 3 w 4260
them 18 w 4264
on 36 w 4266
the 105 w 4269
sudden 2 w 4275
and 48 w 4279
fell 3 w 4283
down 1 w 4287
flat 1 w 4291
on 37 w 4293
the 106 w 4296
earth 1 w 4301
and 49 w 4305
bedewed 1 w 4312
the 107 w 4315
ground 1 w 4321
with 10 w 4325
my 17 w 4327
tears 1 w 4332
then 3 w 4337
I 22 w 4338
seemed 1 w 4344
to 67 w 4346
them 19 w 4350
all 14 w 4353
an 72 w 4355
object 1 w 4361
of 37 w 4363
compassion 1 w 4373
And 3 w 4377
when 8 w 4381
I 23 w 4382
perceived 1 w 4391
the 110 w 4394
change 1 w 4400
that 19 w 4404
was 20 w 4407
made 5 w 4411
in 59 w 4413
the 111 w 4416
multitude 3 w 4425
I 24 w 4427
tried 1 w 4432
to 68 w 4434
divide 1 w 4440
their 7 w 4445
opinions 1 w 4453
before 4 w 4459
the 113 w 4462
armed 3 w 4467
men 17 w 4470
should 2 w 4476
return 1 w 4482
from 2 w 4486
my 18 w 4488
house 2 w 4493
so 21 w 4496
I 25 w 4497
granted 1 w 4504
them 20 w 4508
that 20 w 4512
I 26 w 4513
had 14 w 4516
been 5 w 4520
as 43 w 4522
wicked 3 w 4528
as 44 w 4530
they 12 w 4534
supposed 1 w 4542
me 55 w 4544
to 69 w 4546
be 24 w 4548
but 2 w 4552
still 1 w 4557
I 27 w 4558
entreated 1 w 4567
them 21 w 4571
to 70 w 4573
let 2 w 4576
me 56 w 4578
first 1 w 4583
inform 1 w 4589
them 22 w 4593
for 18 w 4596
what 4 w 4600
use 4 w 4603
I 28 w 4604
had 15 w 4607
kept 3 w 4611
that 21 w 4615
money 1 w 4620
which 5 w 4625
arose 1 w 4630
from 3 w 4634
the 118 w 4637
plunder 3 w 4644
and 50 w 4648
that 22 w 4653
they 13 w 4657
might 5 w 4662
then 4 w 4666
kill 5 w 4670
me 57 w 4672
if 9 w 4674
they 14 w 4678
pleased 1 w 4685
and 51 w 4689
upon 3 w 4693
the 122 w 4696
multitude 4 w 4705
s 259 w 4707
ordering 1 w 4715
me 58 w 4717
to 71 w 4719
speak 1 w 4724
the 123 w 4728
armed 4 w 4733
men 18 w 4736
came 5 w 4740
upon 4 w 4744
me 62 w 4746
and 52 w 4750
when 9 w 4754
they 15 w 4758
saw 2 w 4761
me 63 w 4763
they 16 w 4768
ran 2 w 4771
to 72 w 4773
kill 6 w 4777
me 64 w 4779
but 3 w 4783
when 10 w 4787
the 126 w 4790
multitude 5 w 4799
bade 2 w 4803
them 23 w 4807
hold 1 w 4811
their 8 w 4816
hands 2 w 4821
they 17 w 4826
complied 1 w 4834
and 54 w 4838
expected 2 w 4846
that 23 w 4850
as 46 w 4852
soon 1 w 4856
as 47 w 4858
I 29 w 4859
should 3 w 4865
own 6 w 4868
to 73 w 4870
them 24 w 4874
that 24 w 4878
I 30 w 4879
kept 4 w 4883
the 131 w 4886
money 2 w 4891
for 19 w 4894
the 132 w 4897
king 5 w 4901
it 41 w 4904
would 4 w 4909
be 25 w 4911
looked 1 w 4917
on 45 w 4919
as 48 w 4921
a 365 w 4922
confession 1 w 4932
of 38 w 4934
my 19 w 4936
treason 1 w 4943
and 55 w 4947
they 18 w 4951
should 4 w 4957
then 5 w 4961
be 26 w 4963
allowed 1 w 4970
to 74 w 4972
kill 7 w 4976
me 65 w 4978
When 2 w 4983
therefore 2 w 4993
silence 1 w 5001
was 21 w 5004
made 6 w 5008
by 8 w 5010
the 136 w 5013
whole 1 w 5018
multitude 6 w 5027
I 31 w 5029
spake 1 w 5034
thus 3 w 5038
to 75 w 5040
them 25 w 5044
O 2 w 5046
my 20 w 5048
countrymen 1 w 5058
I 32 w 5060
refuse 1 w 5066
not 6 w 5069
to 76 w 5071
die 2 w 5074
if 10 w 5077
justice 1 w 5084
so 24 w 5086
require 1 w 5093
However 1 w 5101
I 33 w 5103
am 12 w 5105
desirous 1 w 5113
to 77 w 5115
tell 1 w 5119
you 8 w 5122
the 138 w 5125
truth 1 w 5130
of 39 w 5132
this 8 w 5136
matter 2 w 5142
before 5 w 5148
I 34 w 5149
die 3 w 5152
for 22 w 5156
as 51 w 5158
I 35 w 5159
know 1 w 5163
that 25 w 5167
this 9 w 5171
city 2 w 5175
of 40 w 5177
yours 1 w 5182

hospitality 1 w 5218
and 56 w 5222
filled 2 w 5228
with 11 w 5232
abundance 1 w 5241
of 42 w 5243
such 2 w 5247
men 20 w 5250
as 53 w 5252
have 7 w 5256
left 1 w 5260
their 9 w 5265

and 57 w 5281
are 6 w 5284
come 3 w 5288
hither 1 w 5294
to 78 w 5296
be 28 w 5298
partakers 1 w 5307
of 43 w 5309
your 5 w 5313
fortune 1 w 5320
whatever 1 w 5329
it 49 w 5331
be 29 w 5333
I 36 w 5335
had 16 w 5338
a 392 w 5339
mind 2 w 5343
to 79 w 5345
build 3 w 5350
walls 3 w 5355
about 2 w 5360
it 50 w 5362
out 5 w 5366
of 44 w 5368
this 10 w 5372
money 3 w 5377
for 24 w 5381
which 6 w 5386
you 11 w 5389
are 7 w 5392
so 25 w 5394
angry 1 w 5399
with 12 w 5403
me 69 w 5405
while 3 w 5411
yet 3 w 5414
it 52 w 5416
was 23 w 5419

in 65 w 5433

Upon 1 w 5458
my 21 w 5460
saying 1 w 5466
this 11 w 5470
the 141 w 5474
people 3 w 5480
of 45 w 5482
Taricheae 1 w 5491
and 58 w 5494
the 142 w 5497

cried 1 w 5511
out 6 w 5514
that 26 w 5519
they 19 w 5523
gave 1 w 5527
me 70 w 5529
thanks 1 w 5535
and 59 w 5539
desired 2 w 5546

to 81 w 5550
be 31 w 5552
of 46 w 5554
good 1 w 5558

insomuch 1 w 5647
that 27 w 5651
there 7 w 5656
arose 2 w 5661
a 419 w 5662

that 28 w 5759
I 38 w 5760
would 5 w 5765
build 5 w 5770

them 31 w 6105
for 26 w 6108
what 7 w 6112
they 21 w 6116

and 72 w 6504
when 12 w 6508
they 24 w 6512

there 8 w 6825
for 29 w 6829
they 28 w 6833
supposed 2 w 6841
that 34 w 6845
