The family from which I am derived is not an ignoble one, but hath descended all along from the priests; and as nobility among several people is of a different origin, so with us to be of the sacerdotal dignity, is an indication of the splendor of a family. Now, I am not only sprung from a sacerdotal family in general, but from the first of the twenty-four [*] courses; and as among us there is not only a considerable difference between one family of each course and another, I am of the chief family of that first course also; nay, further, by my mother I am of the royal blood; for the children of Asamoneus, from whom that family was derived, had both the office of the high priesthood, and the dignity of a king, for a long time together. I will accordingly set down my progenitors in order. My grandfathers father was named Simon, with the addition of Psellus: he lived at the same time with that son of Simon the high priest, who first of all the high priests was named Hyrcanus. This Simon Psellus had nine sons, one of whom was Matthias, called Ephlias: he married the daughter of Jonathan the high priest, which Jonathan was the first of the sons of Asamoneus, who was high priest, and was the brother of Simon the high priest also. This Matthias had a son called Matthias Curtus, and that in the first year of the government of Hyrcanus: his sons name was Joseph, born in the ninth year of the reign of Alexandra: his son Matthias was born in the tenth year of the reign of Archclaus; as was I born to Matthias in the first year of the reign of Caius Caesar. I have three sons: Hyrcanus, the eldest, was born in the fourth year of the reign of Vespasian, as was Justus born in the seventh, and Agrippa in the ninth. Thus have I set down the genealog of my family as I have found it described [*] in the public records, and so bid adieu to those who calumniate me [as of a lower original].

2

Now, my father Matthias was not only eminent on account of is nobility, but had a higher commendation on account of his righteousness, and was in great reputation in Jerusalem, the greatest city we have. I was myself brought up with my brother, whose name was Matthias, for he was my own brother, by both father and mother; and I made mighty proficiency in the improvements of my learning, and appeared to have both a great memory and understanding. Moreover, when I was a child, and about fourteen years of age, I was commended by all for the love I had to learning; on which account the high priests and principal men of the city came then frequently to me together, in order to know my opinion about the accurate understanding of points of the law. And when I was about sixteen years old, I had a mind to make trim of the several sects that were among us. These sects are three: - The first is that of the Pharisees, the second that Sadducees, and the third that of the Essens, as we have frequently told you; for I thought that by this means I might choose the best, if I were once acquainted with them all; so I contented myself with hard fare, and underwent great difficulties, and went through them all. Nor did I content myself with these trials only; but when I was informed that one, whose name was Banus, lived in the desert, and used no other clothing than grew upon trees, and had no other food than what grew of its own accord, and bathed himself in cold water frequently, both by night and by day, in order to preserve his chastity, I imitated him in those things, and continued with him three years. [*] So when I had accomplished my desires, I returned back to the city, being now nineteen years old, and began to conduct myself according to the rules of the sect of the Pharisees, which is of kin to the sect of the Stoics, as the Greeks call them.

3

But when I was in the twenty-sixth year of my age, it happened that I took a voyage to Rome, and this on the occasion which I shall now describe. At the time when Felix was procurator of Judea there were certain priests of my acquaintance, and very excellent persons they were, whom on a small and trifling occasion he had put into bonds, and sent to Rome to plead their cause before Caesar. These I was desirous to procure deliverance for, and that especially because I was informed that they were not unmindful of piety towards God, even under their afflictions, but supported themselves with figs and nuts. [*] Accordingly I came to Rome, though it were through a great number of hazards by sea; for as our ship was drowned in the Adriatic Sea, we that were in it, being about six hundred in number, [*] swam for our lives all the night; when, upon the first appearance of the day, and upon our sight of a ship of Cyrene, I and some others, eighty in all, by Gods providence, prevented the rest, and were taken up into the other ship. And when I had thus escaped, and was come to Dieearchia, which the Italians call Puteoli, I became acquainted with Aliturius, an actor of plays, and much beloved by Nero, but a Jew by birth; and through his interest became known to Poppea, Caesars wife, and took care, as soon as possible, to entreat her to procure that the priests might be set at liberty. And when, besides this favor, I had obtained many presents from Poppea, I returned home again.

4

And now I perceived innovations were already begun, and that there were a great many very much elevated in hopes of a revolt from the Romans. I therefore endeavored to put a stop to these tumultuous persons, and persuaded them to change their minds; and laid before their eyes against whom it was that they were going to fight, and told them that they were inferior to the Romans not only in martial skill, but also in good fortune; and desired them not rashly, and after the most foolish manner, to bring on the dangers of the most terrible mischiefs upon their country, upon their families, and upon themselves. And this I said with vehement exhortation, because I foresaw that the end of such a war would be most unfortunate to us. But I could not persuade them; for the madness of desperate men was quite too hard for me.

5

I was then afraid, lest, by inculcating these things so often, I should incur their hatred and their suspicions, as if I were of our enemies party, and should run into the danger of being seized by them, and slain; since they were already possessed of Antonia, which was the citadel; so I retired into the inner court of the temple. Yet did I go out of the temple again, after Manahem and the principal of the band of robbers were put to death, when I abode among the high priests and the chief of the Pharisees. But no small fear seized upon us when we saw the people in arms, while we ourselves knew not what we should do, and were not able to restrain the seditious. However, as the danger was directly upon us, we pretended that we were of the same opinion with them, but only advised them to be quiet for the present, and to let the enemy go away, still hoping that Gessius [Florus] would not be long ere he came, and that with great forces, and so put an end to these seditious proceedings.

I 39 w 6174
became 1 w 6180
acquainted 2 w 6190
with 16 w 6194
Aliturius 1 w 6203
an 78 w 6206
actor 1 w 6211
of 76 w 6213

and 49 w 6222
much 2 w 6226
beloved 1 w 6233
by 15 w 6235
Nero 1 w 6239
but 8 w 6243
a 466 w 6244
Jew 4 w 6247
by 16 w 6249

and 50 w 6258
through 3 w 6265
his 21 w 6268
interest 1 w 6276
became 2 w 6282
known 1 w 6287
to 43 w 6289
Poppea 1 w 6295
Caesar 3 w 6302

wife 1 w 6308
and 51 w 6312
took 2 w 6316
care 2 w 6320
as 69 w 6323
soon 1 w 6327
as 70 w 6329
possible 1 w 6337
to 45 w 6340
entreat 1 w 6347
her 37 w 6350
to 46 w 6352
procure 2 w 6359
that 26 w 6363
the 140 w 6366

might 6 w 6378
be 30 w 6380
set 3 w 6383
at 67 w 6385
liberty 1 w 6392
And 3 w 6396
when 9 w 6400
besides 2 w 6408
this 8 w 6412
favor 2 w 6417
I 40 w 6419
had 13 w 6422
obtained 1 w 6430
many 2 w 6434
presents 1 w 6442
from 8 w 6446
Poppea 2 w 6452
I 41 w 6454
returned 2 w 6462
home 1 w 6466
again 1 w 6471
And 4 w 6475
now 5 w 6478
I 42 w 6479
perceived 1 w 6488
innovations 1 w 6499
were 13 w 6503
already 1 w 6510
begun 1 w 6515
and 52 w 6519
that 27 w 6523
there 9 w 6528
were 14 w 6532
a 491 w 6533
great 6 w 6538
many 3 w 6542
very 4 w 6546
much 3 w 6550
elevated 1 w 6558
in 85 w 6560
hopes 1 w 6565
of 77 w 6567
a 495 w 6568
revolt 1 w 6574
from 9 w 6578
the 142 w 6581
Romans 1 w 6587
I 43 w 6589
therefore 2 w 6598
endeavored 1 w 6608
to 47 w 6610
put 3 w 6613
a 498 w 6614
stop 1 w 6618
to 49 w 6620
these 2 w 6625
tumultuous 1 w 6635
persons 2 w 6642
and 53 w 6646
persuaded 1 w 6655
them 6 w 6659
to 50 w 6661
change 1 w 6667
their 4 w 6672
minds 1 w 6677
and 54 w 6681
laid 1 w 6685
before 4 w 6691
their 5 w 6696
eyes 1 w 6700
against 1 w 6707
whom 4 w 6711
it 39 w 6713
was 32 w 6716
that 28 w 6720
they 4 w 6724
were 15 w 6728
going 1 w 6733
to 51 w 6735
fight 1 w 6740
and 55 w 6744
told 2 w 6748
them 7 w 6752
that 29 w 6756
they 5 w 6760
were 16 w 6764
inferior 1 w 6772
to 53 w 6774
the 151 w 6777
Romans 2 w 6783
not 11 w 6786
only 8 w 6790
in 90 w 6792
martial 1 w 6799
skill 1 w 6804
but 9 w 6808
also 4 w 6812
in 91 w 6814
good 1 w 6818
fortune 1 w 6825
and 56 w 6829
desired 1 w 6836
them 8 w 6840
not 12 w 6843
rashly 1 w 6849
and 57 w 6853
after 4 w 6858
the 153 w 6861
most 2 w 6865
foolish 1 w 6872
manner 1 w 6878
to 54 w 6881
bring 1 w 6886
on 88 w 6888
the 154 w 6891
dangers 1 w 6898
of 78 w 6900
the 155 w 6903
most 3 w 6907
terrible 1 w 6915
mischiefs 1 w 6924
upon 4 w 6928
their 6 w 6933
country 1 w 6940
upon 5 w 6945
their 7 w 6950
families 1 w 6958
and 58 w 6962
upon 6 w 6966
themselves 2 w 6976
And 5 w 6980
this 9 w 6984
I 44 w 6985
said 1 w 6989
with 17 w 6993
vehement 1 w 7001
exhortation 1 w 7012
because 3 w 7020
I 45 w 7021
foresaw 1 w 7028
that 30 w 7032
the 159 w 7035
end 7 w 7038
of 79 w 7040
such 2 w 7044
a 527 w 7045
war 3 w 7048
would 1 w 7053
be 36 w 7055
most 4 w 7059
unfortunate 1 w 7070
to 55 w 7072
us 41 w 7074
But 2 w 7078
I 46 w 7079
could 1 w 7084
not 13 w 7087
persuade 2 w 7095
them 10 w 7099
for 24 w 7103
the 161 w 7106
madness 1 w 7113
of 80 w 7115
desperate 1 w 7124
men 10 w 7127
was 33 w 7130
quite 1 w 7135
too 4 w 7138
hard 2 w 7142
for 25 w 7145
me 39 w 7147
I 47 w 7149
was 34 w 7152
then 3 w 7156
afraid 1 w 7162
lest 1 w 7167
by 17 w 7170
inculcating 1 w 7181
these 3 w 7186
things 2 w 7192
so 21 w 7194
often 1 w 7199
I 48 w 7201
should 1 w 7207
incur 1 w 7212
their 8 w 7217
hatred 1 w 7223
and 59 w 7226
their 9 w 7231
suspicions 1 w 7241
as 75 w 7244
if 9 w 7246
I 49 w 7247
were 17 w 7251
of 82 w 7253
our 24 w 7256
enemies 1 w 7263
party 1 w 7269
and 60 w 7273
should 2 w 7279
run 2 w 7282
into 4 w 7286
the 166 w 7289
danger 2 w 7295
of 83 w 7297
being 4 w 7302
seized 1 w 7308
by 18 w 7310
them 11 w 7314
and 61 w 7318
slain 1 w 7323
since 1 w 7329
they 6 w 7333
were 18 w 7337
already 2 w 7344
possessed 1 w 7353
of 84 w 7355
Antonia 1 w 7362
which 11 w 7368
was 35 w 7371
the 169 w 7374
citadel 1 w 7381
so 22 w 7384
I 50 w 7385
retired 1 w 7392
into 5 w 7396
the 170 w 7399
inner 1 w 7404
court 1 w 7409
of 85 w 7411
the 171 w 7414
temple 1 w 7420
Yet 1 w 7424
did 2 w 7427
I 51 w 7428
go 4 w 7430
out 8 w 7433
of 86 w 7435
the 172 w 7438
temple 2 w 7444
again 3 w 7449
after 5 w 7455
Manahem 1 w 7462
and 62 w 7465
the 173 w 7468
principal 2 w 7477
of 87 w 7479
the 174 w 7482
band 1 w 7486
of 88 w 7488
robbers 1 w 7495
were 19 w 7499
put 4 w 7502
to 60 w 7504
death 1 w 7509
when 10 w 7514
I 52 w 7515
abode 1 w 7520
among 5 w 7525
the 175 w 7528
high 9 w 7532
priests 12 w 7539
and 64 w 7542
the 176 w 7545
chief 3 w 7550
of 89 w 7552
the 177 w 7555
Pharisees 4 w 7564
But 3 w 7568
no 26 w 7570
small 3 w 7575
fear 1 w 7579
seized 2 w 7585
upon 7 w 7589
us 43 w 7591
when 11 w 7595
we 36 w 7597
saw 2 w 7600
the 178 w 7603
people 3 w 7609
in 105 w 7611
arms 1 w 7615
while 2 w 7621
we 37 w 7623
ourselves 1 w 7632
knew 1 w 7636
not 14 w 7639
what 3 w 7643
we 38 w 7645
should 3 w 7651
do 6 w 7653
and 65 w 7657
were 20 w 7661
not 15 w 7664
able 5 w 7668
to 61 w 7670
restrain 1 w 7678
the 179 w 7681
seditious 1 w 7690
However 1 w 7698
as 77 w 7701
the 180 w 7704
danger 3 w 7710
was 36 w 7713
directly 1 w 7721
upon 8 w 7725
us 45 w 7727
we 41 w 7730
pretended 1 w 7739
that 31 w 7743
we 42 w 7745
were 21 w 7749
of 90 w 7751
the 181 w 7754
same 2 w 7758
opinion 3 w 7765
with 18 w 7769
them 12 w 7773
but 10 w 7777
only 9 w 7781
advised 1 w 7788
them 13 w 7792
to 62 w 7794
be 39 w 7796
quiet 1 w 7801
for 26 w 7804
the 184 w 7807
present 3 w 7814
and 66 w 7818
to 63 w 7820
let 1 w 7823
the 185 w 7826
enemy 1 w 7831
go 5 w 7833
away 2 w 7837
still 2 w 7843
hoping 1 w 7849
that 32 w 7853
Gessius 1 w 7860
Florus 1 w 7867
would 2 w 7873
not 16 w 7876
be 40 w 7878
long 3 w 7882
ere 43 w 7885
he 226 w 7887
came 5 w 7891
and 67 w 7895
that 33 w 7899
with 19 w 7903
great 7 w 7908
forces 1 w 7914
and 68 w 7918
so 23 w 7920
put 5 w 7923
an 109 w 7925
end 9 w 7928
to 64 w 7930
these 4 w 7935
seditious 2 w 7944
proceedings 1 w 7955
