Then it was that Miriam, the sister of Moses, came to her end, having completed her fortieth year [*] since she left Egypt, on the first [*] day of the lunar month Xanthicus. They then made a public funeral for her, at a great expense. She was buried upon a certain mountain, which they call Sin: and when they had mourned for her thirty days, Moses purified the people after this manner: He brought a heifer that had never been used to the plough or to husbandry, that was complete in all its parts, and entirely of a red color, at a little distance from the camp, into a place perfectly clean. This heifer was slain by the high priest, and her blood sprinkled with his finger seven times before the tabernacle of God; after this, the entire heifer was burnt in that state, together with its skin and entrails; and they threw cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet wool, into the midst of the fire; then a clean man gathered all her ashes together, and laid them in a place perfectly clean. When therefore any persons were defiled by a dead body, they put a little of these ashes into spring water, with hyssop, and, dipping part of these ashes in it, they sprinkled them with it, both on the third day, and on the seventh, and after that they were clean. This he enjoined them to do also when the tribes should come into their own land.

7

Now when this purification, which their leader made upon the mourning for his sister, as it has been now described, was over, he caused the army to remove and to march through the wilderness and through Arabia; and when he came to a place which the Arabians esteem their metropolis, which was formerly called Arce, but has now the name of Petra, at this place, which was encompassed with high mountains, Aaron went up one of them in the sight of the whole army, Moses having before told him that he was to die, for this place was over against them. He put off his pontifical garments, and delivered them to Eleazar his son, to whom the high priesthood belonged, because he was the elder brother; and died while the multitude looked upon him. He died in the same year wherein he lost his sister, having lived in all a hundred twenty and three years. He died on the first day of that lunar month which is called by the Athenians Hecatombaeon, by the Macedonians Lous, but by the Hebrews Abba.

1
HOW MOSES CONQUERED SIHON AND OG KINGS OF THE AMORITES, AND DESTROYED THEIR WHOLE ARMY AND THEN DIVIDED THEIR LAND BY LOT TO TWO TRIBES AND A HALF OF THE HEBREWS.

THE people mourned for Aaron thirty days, and when this mourning was over, Moses removed the army from that place, and came to the river Arnon, which, issuing out of the mountains of Arabia, and running through all that wilderness, falls into the lake Asphaltitis, and becomes the limit between the land of the Moabites and the land of the Amorites. This land is fruitful, and sufficient to maintain a great number of men, with the good things it produces. Moses therefore sent messengers to Sihon, the king of this country, desiring that he would grant his army a passage, upon what security he should please to require; he promised that he should be no way injured, neither as to that country which Sihon governed, nor as to its inhabitants; and that he would buy his provisions at such a price as should be to their advantage, even though he should desire to sell them their very water. But Sihon refused his offer, and put his army into battle array, and was preparing every thing in order to hinder their passing over Arnon.

2

When Moses saw that the Amorite king was disposed to enter upon hostilities with them, he thought he ought not to bear that insult; and, determining to wean the Hebrews from their indolent temper, and prevent the disorders which arose thence, which had been the occasion of their former sedition, (nor indeed were they now thoroughly easy in their minds,) he inquired of God, whether he would give him leave to fight? which when he had done, and God also promised him the victory, he was himself very courageous, and ready to proceed to fighting. Accordingly he encouraged the soldiers; and he desired of them that they would take the pleasure of fighting, now God gave them leave so to do. They then, upon the receipt of this permission, which they so much longed for, put on their whole armor, and set about the work without delay. But the Amorite king was not now like to himself when the Hebrews were ready to attack him; but both he himself was affrighted at the Hebrews, and his army, which before had showed themselves to be of good courage, were then found to be timorous: so they could not sustain the first onset, nor bear up against the Hebrews, but fled away, as thinking this would afford them a more likely way for their escape than fighting, for they depended upon their cities, which were strong, from which yet they reaped no advantage when they were forced to fly to them; for as soon as the Hebrews saw them giving ground, they immediately pursued them close; and when they had broken their ranks, they greatly terrified them, and some of them broke off from the rest, and ran away to the cities. Now the Hebrews pursued them briskly, and obstinately persevered in the labors they had already undergone; and being very skillful in slinging, and very dexterous in throwing of darts, or any thing else of that kind, and also having nothing but light armor, which made them quick in the pursuit, they overtook their enemies; and for those that were most remote, and could not be overtaken, they reached them by their slings and their bows, so that many were slain; and those that escaped the slaughter were sorely wounded, and these were more distressed with thirst than with any of those that fought against them, for it was the summer season; .and when the greatest number of them were brought down to the river out of a desire to drink, as also when others fled away by troops, the Hebrews came round them, and shot at them; so that, what with darts and what with arrows, they made a slaughter of them all. Sihon their king was also slain. So the Hebrews spoiled the dead bodies, and took their prey. The land also which they took was full of abundance of fruits, and the army went all over it without fear, and fed their cattle upon it; and they took the enemies prisoners, for they could no way put a stop to them, since all the fighting men were destroyed. Such was the destruction which overtook the Amorites, who were neither sagacious in counsel, nor courageous in action. Hereupon the Hebrews took possession of their land, which is a country situate between three rivers, and naturally resembled an island: the river Arnon being its southern ; the river Jabbok determining its northern side, which running into Jordan loses its own name, and takes the other; while Jordan itself runs along by it, on its western coast.

3

When matters were come to this state, Og, the king of Gilead and Gaulanitis, fell upon the Israelites. He brought an army with him, and in haste to the assistance of his friend Sihon: but though he found him already slain, yet did he resolve still to come and fight the Hebrews, supposing he should be too hard for them, and being desirous to try their valor; but failing of his hope, he was both himself slain in the battle, and all his army was destroyed. So Moses passed over the river Jabbok, and overran the kingdom of Og. He overthrew their cities, and slew all their inhabitants, who yet exceeded in riches all the men in that part of the continent, on account of the goodness of the soil, and the great quantity of their wealth. Now Og had very few equals, either in the largeness of his body, or handsomeness of his appearance. He was also a man of great activity in the use of his hands, so that his actions were not unequal to the vast largeness and handsome appearance of his body. And men could easily guess at his strength and magnitude when they took his bed at Rabbath, the royal city of the Ammonites; its structure was of iron, its breadth four cubits, and its length a cubit more than double thereto. However, his fall did not only improve the circumstances of the Hebrews for the present, but by his death he was the occasion of further good success to them; for they presently took those sixty cities, which were encompassed with excellent walls, and had been subject to him, and all got both in general and in particular a great prey.

he 114 w 2964

When 2 w 3299
Moses 6 w 3304
saw 1 w 3307
that 15 w 3311
the 81 w 3314
Amorite 2 w 3321
king 2 w 3325
was 18 w 3328
disposed 1 w 3336
to 30 w 3338
enter 1 w 3343
upon 5 w 3347
hostilities 1 w 3358
with 7 w 3362
them 8 w 3366
he 126 w 3369
thought 1 w 3376
he 127 w 3378
ought 3 w 3383
not 2 w 3386
to 31 w 3388
bear 1 w 3392
that 16 w 3396
insult 1 w 3402
and 33 w 3406
determining 1 w 3418
to 32 w 3420
wean 1 w 3424
the 83 w 3427
Hebrews 2 w 3434
from 3 w 3438
their 7 w 3443
indolent 1 w 3451
temper 1 w 3457
and 34 w 3461
prevent 1 w 3468
the 85 w 3471
disorders 1 w 3480
which 9 w 3485
arose 1 w 3490
thence 1 w 3496
which 10 w 3502
had 3 w 3505
been 3 w 3509
the 87 w 3512
occasion 1 w 3520
of 25 w 3522
their 8 w 3527
former 2 w 3533
sedition 1 w 3541
nor 2 w 3546
indeed 1 w 3552
were 3 w 3556
they 7 w 3560
now 3 w 3563
thoroughly 1 w 3573
easy 1 w 3577
in 56 w 3579
their 9 w 3584
minds 1 w 3589
he 136 w 3593
inquired 1 w 3601
of 26 w 3603
God 2 w 3606
whether 1 w 3614
he 139 w 3616
would 3 w 3621
give 1 w 3625
him 3 w 3628
leave 1 w 3633
to 33 w 3635
fight 1 w 3640
which 11 w 3646
when 9 w 3650
he 141 w 3652
had 4 w 3655
done 1 w 3659
and 35 w 3663
God 3 w 3666
also 4 w 3670
promised 2 w 3678
him 4 w 3681
the 92 w 3684
victory 1 w 3691
he 143 w 3694
was 19 w 3697
himself 1 w 3704
very 3 w 3708
courageous 1 w 3718
and 36 w 3722
ready 1 w 3727
to 35 w 3729
proceed 1 w 3736
to 36 w 3738
fighting 1 w 3746
Accordingly 1 w 3758
he 144 w 3760
encouraged 1 w 3770
the 93 w 3773
soldiers 1 w 3781
and 37 w 3785
he 146 w 3787
desired 1 w 3794
of 27 w 3796
them 9 w 3800
that 17 w 3804
they 8 w 3808
would 4 w 3813
take 1 w 3817
the 96 w 3820
pleasure 1 w 3828
of 28 w 3830
fighting 2 w 3838
now 4 w 3842
God 4 w 3845
gave 1 w 3849
them 10 w 3853
leave 2 w 3858
so 12 w 3860
to 37 w 3862
do 7 w 3864
They 2 w 3869
then 5 w 3873
upon 6 w 3878
the 99 w 3881
receipt 1 w 3888
of 29 w 3890
this 10 w 3894
permission 1 w 3904
which 12 w 3910
they 9 w 3914
so 13 w 3916
much 1 w 3920
longed 2 w 3926
for 15 w 3929
put 4 w 3933
on 38 w 3935
their 10 w 3940
whole 2 w 3945
armor 1 w 3950
and 38 w 3954
set 1 w 3957
about 1 w 3962
the 102 w 3965
work 1 w 3969
without 1 w 3976
delay 1 w 3981
But 2 w 3985
the 103 w 3988
Amorite 3 w 3995
king 3 w 3999
was 20 w 4002
not 3 w 4005
now 5 w 4008
like 1 w 4012
to 38 w 4014
himself 2 w 4021
when 10 w 4025
the 104 w 4028
Hebrews 3 w 4035
were 4 w 4039
ready 2 w 4044
to 39 w 4046
attack 1 w 4052
him 7 w 4055
but 3 w 4059
both 2 w 4063
he 160 w 4065
himself 3 w 4072
was 21 w 4075
affrighted 1 w 4085
at 35 w 4087
the 105 w 4090
Hebrews 4 w 4097
and 39 w 4101
his 23 w 4104
army 6 w 4108
which 13 w 4114
before 3 w 4120
had 5 w 4123
showed 1 w 4129
themselves 1 w 4139
to 40 w 4141
be 21 w 4143
of 30 w 4145
good 2 w 4149
courage 3 w 4156
were 5 w 4161
then 6 w 4165
found 1 w 4170
to 41 w 4172
be 22 w 4174
timorous 1 w 4182
so 14 w 4185
they 10 w 4189
could 1 w 4194
not 4 w 4197
sustain 1 w 4204
the 109 w 4207
first 4 w 4212
onset 1 w 4217
nor 3 w 4221
bear 2 w 4225
up 8 w 4227
against 2 w 4234
the 110 w 4237
Hebrews 5 w 4244
but 4 w 4248
fled 1 w 4252
away 1 w 4256
as 44 w 4259
thinking 1 w 4267
this 11 w 4271
would 5 w 4276
afford 1 w 4282
them 12 w 4286
a 302 w 4287
more 1 w 4291
likely 1 w 4297
way 3 w 4300
for 18 w 4303
their 11 w 4308
escape 1 w 4314
than 1 w 4318
fighting 3 w 4326
for 19 w 4330
they 11 w 4334
depended 1 w 4342
upon 7 w 4346
their 12 w 4351
cities 1 w 4357
which 14 w 4363
were 6 w 4367
strong 1 w 4373
from 4 w 4378
which 15 w 4383
yet 1 w 4386
they 12 w 4390
reaped 1 w 4396
no 16 w 4398
advantage 2 w 4407
when 11 w 4411
they 13 w 4415
were 7 w 4419
forced 1 w 4425
to 42 w 4427
fly 1 w 4430
to 43 w 4432
them 13 w 4436
for 21 w 4440
as 45 w 4442
soon 1 w 4446
as 46 w 4448
the 118 w 4451
Hebrews 6 w 4458
saw 2 w 4461
them 14 w 4465
giving 1 w 4471
ground 1 w 4477
they 14 w 4482
immediately 1 w 4493
pursued 1 w 4500
them 15 w 4504
close 1 w 4509
and 40 w 4513
when 12 w 4517
they 15 w 4521
had 6 w 4524
broken 1 w 4530
their 13 w 4535
ranks 1 w 4540
they 16 w 4545
greatly 1 w 4552
terrified 1 w 4561
them 16 w 4565
and 41 w 4569
some 1 w 4573
of 31 w 4575
them 17 w 4579
broke 2 w 4584
off 4 w 4587
from 5 w 4591
the 127 w 4594
rest 1 w 4598
and 42 w 4602
ran 3 w 4605
away 2 w 4609
to 44 w 4611
the 128 w 4614
cities 2 w 4620
Now 2 w 4624
the 129 w 4627
Hebrews 7 w 4634
pursued 2 w 4641
them 18 w 4645
briskly 1 w 4652
and 43 w 4656
obstinately 1 w 4667
persevered 1 w 4677
in 70 w 4679
the 131 w 4682
labors 1 w 4688
they 17 w 4692
had 7 w 4695
already 1 w 4702
undergone 1 w 4711
and 44 w 4715
being 1 w 4720
very 4 w 4724
skillful 1 w 4732
in 72 w 4734
slinging 1 w 4742
and 45 w 4746
very 5 w 4750
dexterous 1 w 4759
in 75 w 4761
throwing 1 w 4769
of 33 w 4771
darts 1 w 4776
or 40 w 4779
any 2 w 4782
thing 3 w 4787
else 1 w 4791
of 34 w 4793
that 18 w 4797

nothing 1 w 4822
but 5 w 4825

which 16 w 4841
made 3 w 4845
them 19 w 4849
quick 1 w 4854
in 81 w 4856
the 134 w 4859
pursuit 1 w 4866
they 18 w 4871
overtook 1 w 4879
their 14 w 4884
enemies 1 w 4891
and 47 w 4895
for 22 w 4898
those 1 w 4903
that 19 w 4907
were 8 w 4911
most 1 w 4915
remote 1 w 4921
and 48 w 4925
could 2 w 4930
not 6 w 4933
be 25 w 4935
overtaken 1 w 4944
they 19 w 4949
reached 1 w 4956
them 20 w 4960

so 18 w 4988
that 20 w 4992
many 1 w 4996
were 9 w 5000
slain 2 w 5005
and 50 w 5009
those 2 w 5014
that 21 w 5018
escaped 1 w 5025
the 141 w 5028
slaughter 1 w 5037
were 10 w 5041
sorely 1 w 5047
wounded 1 w 5054
and 51 w 5058
these 3 w 5063
were 11 w 5067
more 2 w 5071
distressed 1 w 5081
with 9 w 5085

than 2 w 5095
with 10 w 5099
any 4 w 5102
of 35 w 5104
those 3 w 5109
that 22 w 5113
fought 1 w 5119
against 3 w 5126
them 21 w 5130
for 23 w 5134
it 41 w 5136
was 22 w 5139
the 144 w 5142

them 23 w 5287
and 53 w 5291
shot 1 w 5295
at 45 w 5297
them 24 w 5301
so 22 w 5304
that 23 w 5308
what 2 w 5313

what 3 w 5329
