So she commends your work of art, and your selective method, but cannot recognize the likeness. She does not come up to the description, nor near it, for indeed no woman could. Accordingly she sends you back your laudation, and pays homage to the originals from which you drew it. Confine your praises within the limits of humanity; if the shoe is too big, it may

v.3.p.27
chance to trip her up. Then there was another point which I was to impress upon you.

I often hear, she said,—but whether it is true, you men know better than Ithat at Olympia the victors are not allowed to have their statues set up larger than life; the Stewards see to it that no one transgresses this rule, examining the statues even more scrupulously than they did the competitor's qualification. Take care that we do not get convicted of false proportions, and find our statue thrown down by the Stewards.

And now I have given you her message. It is for you, Lycinus, to overhaul your work, and by removing these blemishes avoid the offence. They shocked and made her nervous as I read; she kept on addressing the Goddesses in propitiatory words; and such feelings may surely be permitted to her sex. For that matter, to be quite frank, I shared them to some extent. At the first hearing I found no offence; but as soon as she put her finger on the fault, I .egan to agree. You know what happens with visible objects; if we look at them at close quarters, just under our eyes, I mean, we distinguish nothing clearly; but stepping back to the right distance, we get a clear conception of what is right and what is wrong about them. That was my experience here.

After all, to compare a mortal to Hera and Aphrodite is cheapening the Goddesses, and nothing else. In such comparisons the small is not so much magnified as the great is diminished and reduced. If a giant and a dwarf were walking together, and their heights had to be equalized, no efforts of the dwarf could effect it, however much he stood on tiptoe; the giant must stoop and make himself out shorter than he is. So in this sort of portraiture: the human is not so much exalted by the similitude as the divine is belittled and pulled down. If indeed a lack of earthly beauties forced the artist upon scaling Heaven, he might perhaps be acquitted of blasphemy; but your

v.3.p.28
enterprise was so needless; why Aphrodite and Hera, when you have all mortal beauty to choose from?

we 3 w 1138

them 2 w 1148
at 15 w 1150
close 1 w 1155
quarters 1 w 1163
just 1 w 1168
under 1 w 1173
our 7 w 1176

we 4 w 1189

but 4 w 1218
stepping 1 w 1226
back 2 w 1230
to 16 w 1232
the 23 w 1235
right 1 w 1240
distance 1 w 1248
we 5 w 1251
get 2 w 1254
a 79 w 1255
clear 2 w 1260
conception 1 w 1270
of 7 w 1272
what 2 w 1276
is 11 w 1278
right 2 w 1283
and 7 w 1286
what 3 w 1290
is 12 w 1292
wrong 1 w 1297
about 1 w 1302
them 3 w 1306
That 1 w 1311
was 3 w 1314
my 1 w 1316
experience 1 w 1326
here 2 w 1330
After 1 w 1336
all 2 w 1339
to 17 w 1342
compare 1 w 1349
a 89 w 1350
mortal 1 w 1356
to 18 w 1358
Hera 1 w 1362
and 8 w 1365
Aphrodite 1 w 1374
is 13 w 1376
cheapening 1 w 1386
the 25 w 1389
Goddesses 2 w 1398
and 9 w 1402
nothing 2 w 1409
else 1 w 1413
In 1 w 1416
such 2 w 1420
comparisons 1 w 1431
the 26 w 1434
small 1 w 1439
is 15 w 1441
not 8 w 1444
so 4 w 1446
much 1 w 1450
magnified 1 w 1459
as 7 w 1461
the 27 w 1464
great 1 w 1469
is 16 w 1471
diminished 1 w 1481
and 10 w 1484
reduced 1 w 1491
If 1 w 1494
a 101 w 1495
giant 1 w 1500
and 11 w 1503
a 104 w 1504
dwarf 1 w 1509
were 1 w 1513
walking 1 w 1520
together 1 w 1528
and 12 w 1532
their 2 w 1537
heights 1 w 1544
had 1 w 1547
to 20 w 1549
be 4 w 1551
equalized 1 w 1560
no 16 w 1563
efforts 1 w 1570
of 8 w 1572
the 30 w 1575
dwarf 2 w 1580
could 2 w 1585
effect 1 w 1591
it 15 w 1593
however 1 w 1601
much 2 w 1605
he 52 w 1607
stood 1 w 1612
on 16 w 1614
tiptoe 1 w 1620
the 31 w 1624
giant 2 w 1629
must 1 w 1633
stoop 1 w 1638
and 13 w 1641
make 1 w 1645
himself 1 w 1652
out 2 w 1655
shorter 1 w 1662
than 4 w 1666
he 54 w 1668
is 18 w 1670
So 2 w 1673
in 24 w 1675
this 2 w 1679
sort 1 w 1683
of 9 w 1685
portraiture 1 w 1696
the 32 w 1700
human 2 w 1705
is 20 w 1707
not 9 w 1710
so 6 w 1712
much 3 w 1716
exalted 1 w 1723
by 3 w 1725
the 33 w 1728
similitude 1 w 1738
as 8 w 1740
the 34 w 1743
divine 1 w 1749
is 21 w 1751
belittled 1 w 1760
and 14 w 1763
pulled 1 w 1769
down 2 w 1773
If 2 w 1776
indeed 2 w 1782
a 120 w 1783
lack 1 w 1787
of 10 w 1789
earthly 1 w 1796
beauties 1 w 1804
forced 1 w 1810

upon 2 w 1823
scaling 1 w 1830
Heaven 1 w 1836
he 59 w 1839
might 1 w 1844
perhaps 1 w 1851
be 7 w 1853
acquitted 1 w 1862
of 11 w 1864
blasphemy 1 w 1873
but 5 w 1877
your 6 w 1881
enterprise 1 w 1891
was 4 w 1894
so 7 w 1896
needless 1 w 1904
why 1 w 1908
Aphrodite 2 w 1917
and 15 w 1920
Hera 2 w 1924
when 1 w 1929
you 13 w 1932
have 3 w 1936
all 4 w 1939
mortal 2 w 1945
beauty 1 w 1951
to 24 w 1953
choose 1 w 1959
from 2 w 1963
