RICHES That is a different matter, Hermes; I do not go on my own feet then, and it is not Zeus but Pluto who sends me; for he, too, is a bestower of riches and a generous giver, as his name implies. When I am to go from one man to another, they put me in wax tablets, seal me up carefully, take me up and carry me away. The dead man is laid out in a dark corner of the house with an old sheet over his knees, to be fought for by the weasels, while those who have expectations regarding me wait for me in the public square with their mouths open, just as the

v.2.p.351
swallows chirping brood waits for her to tly home.

When the seal is removed, the thread cut, and the tablets opened, they announce the naine of my new master, cither a relative or a toady or a lewd slave held in high esteem since the days of his wanton youth, with his chin still shaven clean, who in this way gets a generous recompense, deserving fellow that he is, for many and various favours which he did his master long after he had earned a discharge. Whoever he may be, he snatches me up, tablets and all, and runs off with me, changing his name from Pyrrhias or Dromo or Tibius to Megacles or Megabyzus or Protarchus, while those others who opened their mouths in vain are left looking at one another and mourning in earnest because such a fine fish has made his escape from the inmost pocket of their net after swallowing quantities of bait.[*]

As for the man who has been flung head over ears into riches, an uncultivated, coarse-grained fellow who still shudders at the irons, pricks up his ear if anyone casually flicks a whip in passing, and worships the mill as if it were the seat of the mysteries, he is no longer endurable to those who encounter him, but insults gentlemen and whips his fellow-slaves, just to see if he himself can do that sort of thing, until at length he falls in with a prostitute or takes a fancy to breed horses or gives himself into the keeping of toadies who swear that he is better looking than Nireus, better born than Cecrops or Codrus, sharper witted than Odysseus and richer than sixteen Croesuses in one ; and then in a moment, poor devil, he pours out all that was

v.2.p.353
accumulated little by little through many perjuries, robberies and villainies.

HERMES Yes, that is just about the way of it. But when you go on your own feet, how do you find the way, since you are so blind, and how do you tell who the people are whom Zeus sends you to because he thinks they deserve to be rich?

RICHES Do you suppose I find the way or tell who they are? Good Heavens, not a bit of it! Otherwise I would not have left Aristides in the lurch"to--go to Hipponicus and Callias and a great many others who do not deserve a copper.[*] HERMES But what do you do when he sends you down ?

RICHES I wander up and down, roaming about until I come upon someone unawares, and that man, whoever he may be who happens on me, takes me home and keeps me, paying homage to you, Hermes, for his unexpected stroke of good-luck.[*]

HERMES Then you have cheated Zeus, who thinks that you observe his decrees and enrich those who in his opinion deserve riches ?

RICHES Yes, and very properly, my friend, for although he

v.2.p.355
knew that I was blind, he kept sending me to search for a thing so hard to find, which long ago became eclipsed in the world; even a Lynceus could not find it easily, so dim and tiny is its light. So, as the good men are few and wicked men in great numbers fill the cities, it is easier for me to fall in with then in my wanderings and to get into their nets.

HERMES Then how is it that when you leave them you escape easily, since you do not know the way ?

RICHES For some reason I become sharp of eye and swift of foot then, but only for the time of ny escape.

who 15 w 2787
thinks 2 w 2793
that 7 w 2797
you 13 w 2800
observe 1 w 2807
his 15 w 2810
decrees 1 w 2817
and 22 w 2820
enrich 1 w 2826
those 4 w 2831
who 16 w 2834
in 51 w 2836
his 16 w 2839
opinion 1 w 2846
deserve 3 w 2853
riches 3 w 2859
RICHES 4 w 2866
Yes 2 w 2869
and 23 w 2873
very 1 w 2877
properly 1 w 2885
my 4 w 2888
friend 1 w 2894
for 9 w 2898
although 1 w 2906
he 81 w 2908
knew 1 w 2912
that 8 w 2916
I 11 w 2917
was 3 w 2920
blind 2 w 2925
he 82 w 2928
kept 1 w 2932
sending 1 w 2939
me 24 w 2941
to 25 w 2943
search 1 w 2949
for 10 w 2952
a 208 w 2953
thing 2 w 2958
so 6 w 2960
hard 1 w 2964
to 26 w 2966
find 3 w 2970
which 3 w 2976
long 3 w 2980
ago 1 w 2983
became 1 w 2989
eclipsed 1 w 2997
in 57 w 2999
the 50 w 3002
world 1 w 3007
even 1 w 3012
a 212 w 3013
Lynceus 1 w 3020
could 1 w 3025
not 9 w 3028
find 4 w 3032
it 20 w 3034
easily 1 w 3040
so 7 w 3043
dim 1 w 3046
and 24 w 3049
tiny 1 w 3053
is 33 w 3055
its 2 w 3058
light 1 w 3063
So 1 w 3066
as 19 w 3069
the 51 w 3072
good 2 w 3076
men 3 w 3079
are 8 w 3082
few 1 w 3085
and 25 w 3088
wicked 1 w 3094
men 4 w 3097
in 60 w 3099
great 2 w 3104
numbers 1 w 3111
fill 1 w 3115
the 52 w 3118
cities 1 w 3124
it 23 w 3127
is 34 w 3129
easier 1 w 3135
for 11 w 3138
me 28 w 3140
to 27 w 3142
fall 3 w 3146
in 61 w 3148
with 6 w 3152
then 3 w 3156
in 62 w 3158
my 5 w 3160
wanderings 1 w 3170
and 27 w 3173
to 28 w 3175
get 2 w 3178
into 3 w 3182
their 4 w 3187
nets 1 w 3191
HERMES 4 w 3198
Then 2 w 3202
how 3 w 3205
is 35 w 3207
it 25 w 3209
that 9 w 3213
when 3 w 3217
you 14 w 3220
leave 1 w 3225
them 1 w 3229
you 15 w 3232
escape 2 w 3238
easily 2 w 3244
since 3 w 3250
you 16 w 3253
do 10 w 3255
not 10 w 3258
know 1 w 3262
the 56 w 3265
way 6 w 3268
RICHES 5 w 3275
For 1 w 3278
some 2 w 3282
reason 1 w 3288
I 13 w 3289
become 1 w 3295
sharp 2 w 3300
of 21 w 3302
eye 1 w 3305
and 28 w 3308
swift 1 w 3313
of 22 w 3315
foot 1 w 3319
then 4 w 3323
but 5 w 3327
only 1 w 3331
for 12 w 3334
the 58 w 3337
time 1 w 3341
of 23 w 3343
ny 6 w 3345
escape 3 w 3351
