Mikyllos

Accordingly I got ready to take myself off, but Eukrates turned round and after a good deal of hesitation said, when he saw me looking very downcast, "Come along, too, Mikyllos, and dine with us. I will tell my son to have his supper with his mother in the nursery so that there may be a place for you." So I went in like a wolf who has almost lost his prey, ashamed that they should think I had driven Eukrates's boy from the table. When it was time to take our places on the couches, they first lifted Thesmopolis and set him up. It was no small job, by Zeus! for fiveI think it was five -well-grown young men, and they stuffed cushions in all round him to keep him in position and enable him to hold out a long time. Then, as nobody could endure to sit near him, they took me and deposited me beside him, so that we were neighbors. Thereupon we dined, Pythagoras, and had a bountiful and varied dinner off abundance of silver and gold. There were golden goblets, and the waiters were beautiful boys, and between the courses there were singing-girls and clowns, and on the whole the entertainment

p.96
was delightful. The only drawback was that Thesmopolis gave me a good deal of trouble by boring me and talking to me about the "higher life," and instructing me that two negatives make an affirmative, and that if it is day it is not night, and sometimes he even proved that I had horns. He strung together a great deal more of such philosophy for me, quite gratuitously, and cut off my mirth, because he would not let me listen to the cither-playing and singing. Such, Cock, was the dinner.

Cock

Not much fun, Mikyllos, particularly as you were assigned to that silly old man.

Mikyllos

But now hear my dream, too. I thought that Eukrates was dying, being somehow childless, and he sent for me and made a will by which I was heir to everything he had, and shortly after died. I came into possession of the property, and drew gold and silver by the bucketful from a perennial stream. As to other things, clothing, and furniture, and plate, and servants, all I had was just what you would expect. I drove in a white chariot, lolling back, stared at and envied by all spectators. A quantity of servants ran and rode before me, and more followed. I wore his clothes and had as many as sixteen massive rings on my fingers, and I was ordering some brilliant feast to be prepared for the entertainment of my friends. Then, after the manner of

p.97
dreams, they were already present, and the supper was just being served, and the drinking was about to begin. I was in this situation, and pledging each of my guests in golden goblets, and the dessert was just coming in, when you raised your inopportune cry, put our feast to confusion, overturned the tables and scattered that wealth so that it was blown to the winds. Does it strike you that my anger against you was unreasonable? I should have liked to see that dream for three nights running.

Cock

What a lover you are of gold and wealth, Mikyllos. Do you admire this one thing of all others, and think it is happiness to have quantities of gold?

Mikyllos

I am not alone in my opinion, Pythagoras. You yourself, when you were Euphorbos, decked your locks with gold and silver when you went to fight the Achaians, actually in battle, where it was a better plan to carry iron than gold; but even there you thought you must wreathe your hair with gold before you fought. And in my judgment that is why Homer said your hair was like the Graces, because "it was tightly bound with gold and with silver." For it is plain that it looked much more goodly and delightful when it was braided with the gold and vied with it in splendor. Still it does not make much difference, Goldlocks, whether you, who

p.98
were only Panthoos's son, honored gold or not. But the father of all men and gods, the son of Kronos and Rhea, when he fell in love with that Argolian girl, knew no lovelier form to assume, and no better way to break through the guard of Akrisios-you know, of course, that he turned into gold, and poured through the roof to be with his beloved. So why should I go on to tell you anything more about it, saying how many wants gold fills, and how it makes its owners handsome and clever and powerful, adds glory and reputation to them, and sometimes brings them in a twinkling from obscurity and contempt to prominence and fame.

Mikyllos

Now, you know my neighbor and fellow-craftsman, Simon, who dined with me not long ago; that time in the holidays when I made a bean soup with two slices of sausage in it.

Cock

I know the little snub-nosed creature. He picked up the earthen cup, the only one we had, and carried it off under his arm. I saw him, Mikyllos.

Mikyllos

Then was he that stole it, and afterwards called so many gods to witness his innocence! But why did you not cry out and tell of him then, Cock, when you saw us being robbed?

Cock

I crowed, which was all I could do then. But what has Simon done? I thought you had something to say about him.

p.99

Mikyllos

He had a cousin named Drimylos, who was enormously rich. While he was living he never gave Simon a cent. Why should he, who never touched his money himself? But he died the other day, and all his property has come by law to Simon, and now he of the dirty rags, he who used to lick his soup-plate, drives at his ease, wearing purple and scarlet, owning slaves and carriages and golden goblets and ivory tables, with the crowd bowing before him, and not so much as a glance for me any longer. At least, I saw him passing close by me and said, "How do you do, Simon?" But he flew into a rage and said, "Tell this beggar not to shorten my name. I am not called Simon, but Simonides." And what is more important, the women are in love with him already, but he is coy with them and fastidious. Some he approves and treats graciously, but others threaten to hang themselves because of his neglect. You see what good things gold can do, if it even transforms the ugly and makes them charming, as that cestus did in the poem. You know, too, what the poets say:

O gold, fairest of possessions;
and,
For it is gold that sways mortals.
But what are you laughing at in the midst of my story, Cock?
p.100

Cock

To see you, too, Mikyllos, sharing the vulgar error about rich people through your ignorance. Be assured that they live a much more wretched life than you do. I tell you as one who has been both poor and rich over and over again, and tried every sort of life. It will not be long before you yourself will have knowledge of each.

Mikyllos

By Zeus! it is high time for you to take your turn and tell about your metamorphoses, and what you know about each life.

Cock

Listen, but first know this, that I have seen no living soul happier than you.

Mikyllos

Than I? I wish you the same, for you move me to use bad language to you. But begin with Euphorbos, and tell me how you were changed into Pythagoras, and so on in order down to the cock. For you must have had a variety of sights and experiences in your manifold lives.

opinion 1 w 2554
Pythagoras 2 w 2565
You 1 w 2569
yourself 1 w 2577
when 3 w 2582
you 12 w 2585
were 7 w 2589
Euphorbos 1 w 2598
decked 1 w 2605
your 3 w 2609
locks 1 w 2614
with 3 w 2618
gold 7 w 2622
and 40 w 2625
silver 3 w 2631
when 4 w 2635
you 14 w 2638
went 2 w 2642
to 25 w 2644
fight 1 w 2649
the 33 w 2652
Achaians 1 w 2660
actually 1 w 2669
in 53 w 2671
battle 1 w 2677
where 1 w 2683
it 24 w 2685
was 17 w 2688
a 210 w 2689
better 1 w 2695
plan 1 w 2699
to 26 w 2701
carry 1 w 2706
iron 1 w 2710
than 1 w 2714
gold 8 w 2718
but 2 w 2722
even 2 w 2726
there 3 w 2731
you 15 w 2734
thought 2 w 2741
you 16 w 2744
must 1 w 2748
wreathe 1 w 2755
your 4 w 2759
hair 1 w 2763
with 4 w 2767
gold 9 w 2771
before 2 w 2777
you 18 w 2780
fought 1 w 2786
And 1 w 2790
in 54 w 2792
my 10 w 2794
judgment 1 w 2802
that 14 w 2806
is 14 w 2808
why 1 w 2811
Homer 1 w 2816
said 2 w 2820
your 5 w 2824
hair 2 w 2828
was 18 w 2831
like 3 w 2835
the 36 w 2838
Graces 1 w 2844
because 2 w 2852
it 26 w 2855
was 19 w 2858
tightly 1 w 2865
bound 1 w 2870
with 5 w 2874
gold 10 w 2878
and 41 w 2881
with 6 w 2885
silver 4 w 2891
For 1 w 2896
it 29 w 2898
is 15 w 2900
plain 1 w 2905
that 15 w 2909
it 30 w 2911
looked 1 w 2917
much 2 w 2921
more 3 w 2925
goodly 1 w 2931
and 42 w 2934
delightful 2 w 2944
when 5 w 2948
it 31 w 2950
was 20 w 2953
braided 1 w 2960
with 7 w 2964
the 37 w 2967
gold 11 w 2971
and 43 w 2974
vied 2 w 2978
with 8 w 2982
it 34 w 2984
in 56 w 2986
splendor 1 w 2994
Still 1 w 3000
it 35 w 3002
does 1 w 3006
not 4 w 3009
make 2 w 3013
much 3 w 3017
difference 1 w 3027
Goldlocks 1 w 3037
whether 1 w 3045
you 20 w 3048
who 3 w 3052
were 8 w 3056
only 2 w 3060
Panthoos 1 w 3068
s 180 w 3070
son 3 w 3073
honored 1 w 3081
gold 12 w 3085
or 27 w 3087
not 5 w 3090
But 2 w 3094
the 39 w 3097
father 1 w 3103
of 16 w 3105
all 7 w 3108
men 5 w 3111
and 44 w 3114
gods 1 w 3118
the 41 w 3122
son 4 w 3125
of 17 w 3127
Kronos 1 w 3133
and 45 w 3136
Rhea 1 w 3140
when 6 w 3145
he 69 w 3147
fell 1 w 3151
in 57 w 3153
love 2 w 3157
with 9 w 3161
that 16 w 3165
Argolian 1 w 3173
girl 2 w 3177
knew 1 w 3182
no 12 w 3184
lovelier 1 w 3192
form 1 w 3196
to 27 w 3198
assume 1 w 3204
and 46 w 3208
no 13 w 3210
better 2 w 3216
way 1 w 3219
to 28 w 3221
break 1 w 3226
through 1 w 3233
the 42 w 3236
guard 1 w 3241
of 18 w 3243
Akrisios-you 1 w 3255
know 1 w 3259
of 19 w 3262
course 2 w 3268
that 17 w 3273
he 71 w 3275
turned 3 w 3281
into 2 w 3285
gold 13 w 3289
and 47 w 3293
poured 1 w 3299
through 2 w 3306
the 43 w 3309
roof 1 w 3313
to 30 w 3315
be 15 w 3317
with 10 w 3321
his 7 w 3324
beloved 1 w 3331
So 2 w 3334
why 2 w 3337
should 3 w 3343
I 18 w 3344
go 24 w 3346
on 26 w 3348
to 31 w 3350
tell 2 w 3354
you 22 w 3357
anything 1 w 3365
more 4 w 3369
about 3 w 3374
it 38 w 3376
saying 1 w 3383
how 2 w 3386
many 2 w 3390
wants 1 w 3395
gold 14 w 3399
fills 1 w 3404
and 48 w 3408
how 3 w 3411
it 39 w 3413
makes 1 w 3418
its 1 w 3421
owners 1 w 3427
handsome 1 w 3435
and 50 w 3438
clever 1 w 3444
and 51 w 3447
powerful 1 w 3455
adds 1 w 3460
glory 1 w 3465
and 52 w 3468
reputation 1 w 3478
to 32 w 3480
them 1 w 3484
and 53 w 3488
sometimes 2 w 3497
brings 1 w 3503
them 2 w 3507
in 62 w 3509
a 260 w 3510
twinkling 1 w 3519
from 3 w 3523
obscurity 1 w 3532
and 54 w 3535
contempt 1 w 3543
to 33 w 3545
prominence 1 w 3555
and 55 w 3558
fame 1 w 3562
Mikyllos 7 w 3571
Now 1 w 3574
you 23 w 3578
know 2 w 3582
my 11 w 3584
neighbor 2 w 3592
and 56 w 3595
fellow-craftsman 1 w 3611
Simon 1 w 3617
who 4 w 3621
dined 2 w 3626
with 11 w 3630
me 32 w 3632
not 6 w 3635
long 3 w 3639
ago 3 w 3642
that 18 w 3647
time 5 w 3651
in 67 w 3653
the 46 w 3656
holidays 1 w 3664
when 7 w 3668
I 19 w 3669
made 2 w 3673
a 271 w 3674
bean 1 w 3678
soup 1 w 3682
with 12 w 3686
two 2 w 3689
slices 1 w 3695
of 21 w 3697
sausage 1 w 3704
in 68 w 3706
it 44 w 3708
Cock 4 w 3713
I 20 w 3714
know 3 w 3718
the 47 w 3721
little 1 w 3727
snub-nosed 1 w 3737
creature 1 w 3745
He 2 w 3748
picked 1 w 3754
up 7 w 3756
the 48 w 3759
earthen 1 w 3766
cup 1 w 3769
the 50 w 3773
only 3 w 3777
one 3 w 3780
we 19 w 3782
had 7 w 3785
and 57 w 3789
carried 1 w 3796
it 46 w 3798
off 4 w 3801
under 1 w 3806
his 8 w 3809
arm 1 w 3812
I 21 w 3814
saw 2 w 3817
him 7 w 3820
Mikyllos 8 w 3829
Mikyllos 9 w 3838
Then 3 w 3842
was 21 w 3845
he 82 w 3847
that 19 w 3851
stole 1 w 3856
it 47 w 3858
and 58 w 3862
afterwards 1 w 3872
called 1 w 3878
so 15 w 3880
many 3 w 3884
gods 2 w 3888
to 35 w 3890
witness 1 w 3897
his 9 w 3900
innocence 1 w 3909
But 3 w 3913
why 3 w 3916
did 1 w 3919
you 24 w 3922
not 7 w 3925
cry 2 w 3928
out 5 w 3931
and 59 w 3934
tell 3 w 3938
of 23 w 3940
him 8 w 3943
then 2 w 3947
Cock 5 w 3952
when 8 w 3957
you 25 w 3960
saw 3 w 3963
us 13 w 3965
being 3 w 3970
robbed 1 w 3976
Cock 6 w 3981
I 22 w 3982
crowed 1 w 3988
which 2 w 3994
was 22 w 3997
all 9 w 4000
I 23 w 4001
could 2 w 4006
do 4 w 4008
then 3 w 4012
But 4 w 4016
what 2 w 4020
has 2 w 4023
Simon 2 w 4028
done 1 w 4032
I 24 w 4034
thought 3 w 4041
you 26 w 4044
had 8 w 4047
something 1 w 4056
to 36 w 4058
say 2 w 4061
about 4 w 4066
him 9 w 4069
Mikyllos 10 w 4078
He 3 w 4080
had 9 w 4083
a 299 w 4084
cousin 1 w 4090
named 1 w 4095
Drimylos 1 w 4103
who 5 w 4107
was 23 w 4110
enormously 1 w 4120
rich 1 w 4124
While 1 w 4130
he 86 w 4132
was 24 w 4135
living 1 w 4141
he 87 w 4143
never 1 w 4148
gave 2 w 4152
Simon 3 w 4157
a 304 w 4158
cent 1 w 4162
Why 1 w 4166
should 4 w 4172
he 88 w 4174
who 6 w 4178
never 2 w 4183
touched 1 w 4190
his 10 w 4193
money 1 w 4198
himself 1 w 4205
But 5 w 4209
he 90 w 4211
died 2 w 4215
the 53 w 4218
other 4 w 4223
day 3 w 4226
and 60 w 4230
all 10 w 4233
his 11 w 4236
property 2 w 4244
has 3 w 4247
come 1 w 4251
by 6 w 4253
law 1 w 4256
to 38 w 4258
Simon 4 w 4263
and 61 w 4267
now 5 w 4270
he 93 w 4272
of 24 w 4274
the 55 w 4277
dirty 1 w 4282
rags 1 w 4286
he 95 w 4289
who 7 w 4292
used 1 w 4296
to 39 w 4298
lick 1 w 4302
his 12 w 4305
soup-plate 1 w 4315
drives 1 w 4322
at 42 w 4324
his 13 w 4327
ease 1 w 4331
wearing 1 w 4339
purple 1 w 4345
and 62 w 4348
scarlet 1 w 4355
owning 1 w 4362
slaves 1 w 4368
and 63 w 4371
carriages 1 w 4380
and 64 w 4383
golden 3 w 4389
goblets 3 w 4396
and 65 w 4399
ivory 1 w 4404
tables 2 w 4410
with 13 w 4415
the 56 w 4418
crowd 1 w 4423
bowing 1 w 4429
before 3 w 4435
him 11 w 4438
and 66 w 4442
not 8 w 4445
so 18 w 4447
much 4 w 4451
as 43 w 4453
a 327 w 4454
glance 1 w 4460
for 11 w 4463
me 37 w 4465
any 5 w 4468
longer 1 w 4474
At 1 w 4477
least 1 w 4482
I 25 w 4484
saw 4 w 4487
him 12 w 4490
passing 1 w 4497
close 1 w 4502
by 7 w 4504
me 38 w 4506
and 67 w 4509
said 3 w 4513
How 1 w 4518
do 6 w 4520
you 27 w 4523
do 7 w 4525
Simon 5 w 4531
But 6 w 4536
he 97 w 4538
flew 1 w 4542
into 3 w 4546
a 335 w 4547
rage 1 w 4551
and 68 w 4554
said 4 w 4558
Tell 1 w 4564
this 3 w 4568
beggar 1 w 4574
not 9 w 4577
to 41 w 4579
shorten 1 w 4586
my 13 w 4588
name 2 w 4592
I 26 w 4594
am 11 w 4596
not 10 w 4599
called 2 w 4605
Simon 6 w 4610
but 3 w 4614
Simonides 1 w 4623
And 2 w 4628
what 3 w 4632
is 25 w 4634
more 5 w 4638
important 1 w 4647
the 57 w 4651
women 1 w 4656
are 4 w 4659
in 79 w 4661
love 5 w 4665
with 14 w 4669
him 13 w 4672
already 2 w 4679
but 4 w 4683
he 99 w 4685
is 26 w 4687
coy 1 w 4690
with 15 w 4694
them 3 w 4698
and 69 w 4701
fastidious 1 w 4711
Some 1 w 4716
he 101 w 4718
approves 1 w 4726
and 70 w 4729
treats 1 w 4735
graciously 1 w 4745
but 5 w 4749
others 2 w 4755
threaten 1 w 4763
to 42 w 4765
hang 1 w 4769
themselves 1 w 4779
because 3 w 4786
of 25 w 4788
his 15 w 4791
neglect 1 w 4798
You 2 w 4802
see 2 w 4805
what 4 w 4809
good 4 w 4813
things 2 w 4819
gold 16 w 4823
can 1 w 4826
do 8 w 4828
if 7 w 4831
it 52 w 4833
even 3 w 4837
transforms 1 w 4847
the 61 w 4850
ugly 1 w 4854
and 71 w 4857
makes 2 w 4862
them 5 w 4866
charming 1 w 4874
as 47 w 4877
that 20 w 4881
cestus 1 w 4887
did 2 w 4890
in 82 w 4892
the 63 w 4895
poem 1 w 4899
You 3 w 4903
know 4 w 4907
too 4 w 4911
what 5 w 4916
the 64 w 4919
poets 1 w 4924
say 3 w 4927
O 1 w 4929
gold 17 w 4933
fairest 1 w 4941
of 26 w 4943
possessions 1 w 4954
and 72 w 4958
For 2 w 4962
it 53 w 4964
is 28 w 4966
gold 18 w 4970
that 21 w 4974
sways 1 w 4979
mortals 1 w 4986
But 7 w 4990
what 6 w 4994
are 5 w 4997
you 28 w 5000
laughing 1 w 5008
at 51 w 5010
in 84 w 5012
the 65 w 5015
midst 1 w 5020
of 27 w 5022
my 14 w 5024
story 1 w 5029
Cock 7 w 5034
Cock 8 w 5039
To 1 w 5041
see 3 w 5044
you 29 w 5047
too 5 w 5051
Mikyllos 11 w 5060
sharing 1 w 5068
the 66 w 5071
vulgar 1 w 5077
error 1 w 5082
about 5 w 5087
rich 2 w 5091
people 1 w 5097
through 3 w 5104
your 6 w 5108
ignorance 1 w 5117
Be 1 w 5120
assured 1 w 5127
that 22 w 5131
they 6 w 5135
live 1 w 5139
a 382 w 5140
much 5 w 5144
more 6 w 5148
wretched 1 w 5156
life 2 w 5160
than 2 w 5164
you 31 w 5167
do 9 w 5169
I 27 w 5171
tell 4 w 5175
you 32 w 5178
as 49 w 5180
one 6 w 5183
who 8 w 5186
has 4 w 5189
been 1 w 5193
both 1 w 5197
poor 1 w 5201
and 73 w 5204
rich 3 w 5208
over 3 w 5212
and 74 w 5215
over 4 w 5219
again 2 w 5224
and 75 w 5228
tried 1 w 5233
every 2 w 5238
sort 1 w 5242
of 28 w 5244
life 3 w 5248
It 2 w 5251
will 3 w 5255
not 11 w 5258
be 24 w 5260
long 5 w 5264
before 4 w 5270
you 33 w 5273
yourself 2 w 5281
will 4 w 5285
have 4 w 5289
knowledge 1 w 5298
of 29 w 5300
each 2 w 5304
Mikyllos 12 w 5313
By 1 w 5315
Zeus 2 w 5319
it 54 w 5322
is 29 w 5324
high 2 w 5328
time 6 w 5332
for 14 w 5335
you 35 w 5338
to 46 w 5340
take 3 w 5344
your 8 w 5348
turn 4 w 5352
and 76 w 5355
tell 5 w 5359
about 6 w 5364
your 9 w 5368
metamorphoses 1 w 5381
and 77 w 5385
what 7 w 5389
you 38 w 5392
know 6 w 5396
about 7 w 5401
each 3 w 5405
life 4 w 5409
Cock 9 w 5414
Listen 1 w 5420
but 6 w 5424
first 2 w 5429
know 7 w 5433
this 4 w 5437
that 23 w 5442
I 29 w 5443
have 5 w 5447
seen 1 w 5451
no 32 w 5453
living 2 w 5459
soul 1 w 5463
happier 1 w 5470
than 3 w 5474
you 39 w 5477
Mikyllos 13 w 5486
Than 1 w 5490
I 30 w 5491
I 31 w 5493
wish 1 w 5497
you 40 w 5500
the 68 w 5503
same 1 w 5507
for 15 w 5511
you 41 w 5514
move 1 w 5518
me 45 w 5520
to 47 w 5522
use 5 w 5525
bad 1 w 5528
language 1 w 5536
to 48 w 5538
you 42 w 5541
But 8 w 5545
begin 2 w 5550
with 16 w 5554
Euphorbos 2 w 5563
and 78 w 5567
tell 6 w 5571
