Lycinus

Well, we fell to, quietly at first, on the ample and varied fare, But you do not want a catalogue of soups and pastry and sauces; there was plenty of everything. At this stage Cleodemus bent down to Ion, and said: Do you see how the old man (this was Zenothemis; I could overhear their talk) is stuffing down the good thingshis dress gets a good deal of the gravyand what a lot he hands back to his servant? he thinks we cannot see him, and does not care whether there will be enough to go round, Just call Lycinuss attention to him.’ This was quite unnecessary, as I had had an excellent view of it for some time.

Lycinus

Just after Cleodemus had said this, in burst Alcidamas the cynic. He had not been asked, but put a good face upon it with the usual No summons Menelaus waits.’ The general opinion clearly was that he was an impudent rogue, and various people struck in with what came to hand: What, Menelaus, art distraught?’ or, It liked not Agamemnon, Atreus son,’ and other neat tags suited to the occasion; but these were all asides; no one ventured to make them audible to him. Alcidamas is a man uncommonly good at the war-cry’; he will bark you louder than any dog of them all, literal or metaphorical; my gentlemen all knew he was their better, and lay low.

Lycinus

Aristaenetus told him he was quite right to come; would he take a chair and sit behind Histiaeus and Dionysodorus? Stuff!' he said; a soft womanish trick, to sit on a chair or a stool! one might as well loll at ones food half on ones back, like all of you on this soft couch with purple cushions under you. As for me, I will take my dinner standing and walking about the room. If I get tired, I will lay my old cloak on the ground and prop myself on my elbow like Heracles in the

pictures.’ Just as you please,’ said Aristaenetus; and after that Alcidamas fed walking round, shifting his quarters like the Scythians according to where pasturage was richest, and following the servants up as they carried the dishes.

Lycinus

However, he did not let feeding interrupt his energetic expositions of virtue and vice, and his scoffs at gold and silver. What was the good of this multitude of wonderful cups, he wanted to know, when earthenware would serve the purpose? Aristaenetus got rid of his obtrusiveness for the moment by signing to his servant to hand the cynic a huge goblet of potent liquor. It seemed a happy thought; but he little knew the woes that were to flow from that goblet. When Alcidamas got it, he was quiet for a while, throwing himself on the ground in dishabille as he had threatened, with his elbow planted vertically, just in the attitude of the painters Heracles with Pholus.

Lycinus

By this time the wine was flowing pretty freely everywhere; healths were drunk, conversation was general, and the lights had come in. I now noticed the boy standing near Cleodemus a good-looking cup-bearerto have an odd smile on. I suppose I am to give you all the by-play of the dinner, especially any tender incidents. Well, so I was trying to get at the reason for the smile. In a little while he came to take Cleodemuss cup from him; he gave the boys fingers a pinch, and handed him up a couple of shillings, I think it was, with the cup. The smile appeared again in response to the pinch, but I imagine he failed to notice the coins; he did not get hold of them; they went ringing on the floor, and there were two blushing faces to be seen. Those round, however, could not tell whose the money was, the boy saying he had not dropped it, and Cleodemus, at whose place it had been heard to fall, not confessing to the loss. So the matter was soon done with; hardly any one had grasped the situationonly Aristaenetus, as far as I could gather. He shifted the boy soon after, effecting

the transfer without any fuss, and assigned Cleodemus a strong grown-up fellow who might be a mule or horse groom. So much for that business; it would have seriously compromised Cleodemus if it had attracted general attention; but it was smothered forthwith by Aristaenetuss tactful handling of the offence.

two 1 w 2802
blushing 1 w 2810
faces 1 w 2815
to 25 w 2817
be 7 w 2819
seen 1 w 2823
Those 1 w 2829
round 5 w 2834
however 1 w 2842
could 2 w 2848
not 11 w 2851
tell 1 w 2855
whose 1 w 2860
the 50 w 2863
money 1 w 2868
was 15 w 2871
the 51 w 2875
boy 3 w 2878
saying 1 w 2884
he 80 w 2886
had 7 w 2889
not 12 w 2892
dropped 1 w 2899
it 23 w 2901
and 28 w 2905
Cleodemus 5 w 2914
at 20 w 2917
whose 2 w 2922
place 1 w 2927
it 24 w 2929
had 8 w 2932
been 2 w 2936
heard 1 w 2941
to 26 w 2943
fall 1 w 2947
not 13 w 2951
confessing 1 w 2961
to 27 w 2963
the 52 w 2966
loss 1 w 2970
So 1 w 2973
the 53 w 2976
matter 1 w 2982
was 16 w 2985
soon 1 w 2989
done 1 w 2993
with 7 w 2997
hardly 1 w 3004
any 3 w 3007
one 7 w 3010
had 9 w 3013
grasped 1 w 3020
the 54 w 3023
situation 1 w 3032
only 2 w 3037
Aristaenetus 4 w 3049
as 34 w 3052
far 2 w 3055
as 35 w 3057
I 17 w 3058
could 3 w 3063
gather 1 w 3069
He 4 w 3072
shifted 1 w 3079
the 56 w 3082
boy 4 w 3085
soon 2 w 3089
after 3 w 3094
effecting 1 w 3104
the 57 w 3107
transfer 1 w 3115
without 1 w 3122
any 4 w 3125
fuss 1 w 3129
and 29 w 3133
assigned 1 w 3141
Cleodemus 6 w 3150
a 237 w 3151
strong 1 w 3157
grown-up 1 w 3165
fellow 1 w 3171
who 3 w 3174
might 2 w 3179
be 9 w 3181
a 238 w 3182
mule 1 w 3186
or 14 w 3188
horse 1 w 3193
groom 1 w 3198
So 2 w 3201
much 1 w 3205
for 6 w 3208
that 5 w 3212
business 1 w 3220
it 28 w 3223
would 3 w 3228
have 2 w 3232
seriously 1 w 3241
compromised 1 w 3252
Cleodemus 7 w 3261
if 3 w 3263
it 29 w 3265
had 10 w 3268
attracted 1 w 3277
general 3 w 3284
attention 2 w 3293
but 5 w 3297
it 30 w 3299
was 17 w 3302
smothered 1 w 3311
forthwith 1 w 3320
by 3 w 3322
Aristaenetus 5 w 3334
s 219 w 3336
tactful 1 w 3343
handling 1 w 3351
of 19 w 3353
the 59 w 3356
offence 1 w 3363
