Fr.

Where have you been now, Socrates? Ah, but of course you have been in chase of Alcibiades and his youthful beauty! Well, only the other day, as I looked at him, I thought him still handsome as a manfor a man he is, Socrates, between you and me, and with quite a growth of beard.

Soc.

And what of that? Do you mean to say you do not approve of Homer,[*]

309b
who said that youth has highest grace in him whose beard is appearing, as now in the case of Alcibiades?

Fr.

Then how is the affair at present? Have you been with him just now? And how is the young man treating you?

Soc.

Quite well, I considered, and especially so today: for he spoke a good deal on my side, supporting me in a discussionin fact I have only just left him. However, there is a strange thing I have to tell you: although he was present, I not merely paid him no attention, but at times forgot him altogether.

309c
Fr.

Why, what can have happened between you and him? Something serious! For surely you did not find anyone else of greater beauty there,—no, not in our city.

Soc.

Yes, of far greater.

Fr.

What do you say? One of our people, or a foreigner?

Soc.

A foreigner.

Fr.

Of what city?

Soc.

Abdera.

Fr.

And you found this foreigner so beautiful that he appeared to you of greater beauty than the son of Cleinias?

Soc.

Why, my good sir, must not the wisest appear more beautiful?

Fr.

Do you mean it was some wise man that you met just now?

309d
Soc.

Nay, rather the wisest of our generation, I may tell you, if wisest is what you agree to call Protagoras.

Fr.

Ah, what a piece of news! Protagoras come to town!

Soc.

Yes, two days ago.

Fr.

And it was his company that you left just now?

310
310a
Soc.

Yes, and a great deal I said to him, and he to me.

Fr.

Then do let us hear your account of the conversation at once, if you are disengaged take my boys place,[*] and sit here.

Soc.

Very good indeed, I shall be obliged to you, if you will listen.

Fr.

And we also to you, I assure you, if you will tell us.

Soc.

A twofold obligation. Well now, listen.

During this night just past, in the small hours, Hippocrates, son of Apollodorus and brother of Phason, knocked violently at my door with his stick,
310b
and when they opened to him he came hurrying in at once and calling to me in a loud voice:
Socrates, are you awake, or sleeping?
Then I, recognizing his voice, said: Hippocrates, hallo! Some news to break to me?
Only good news,
he replied. Tell it, and welcome, I said: what is it, and what business brings you here at such an hour?
Protagoras has come,
he said, standing at my side. Yes, two days ago, I said: have you only just heard?
Yes, by Heaven!
he replied,
310c
last evening.
With this he groped about for the bedstead, and sitting down by my feet he said:
It was in the evening, after I had got in very late from Oenoe. My boy Satyrus, you see, had run away: I meant to let you know I was going in chase of him, but some other matter put it out of my head. On my return, when we had finished dinner and were about to retire, my brother told me, only then, that Protagoras had come. I made an effort, even at that hour, to get to you at once, but came to the conclusion that it was too late at night.
310d
But as soon as I had slept off my fatigue I got up at once and made my way straight here.
Then I, noting the mans gallant spirit and the flutter he was in, remarked: Well, what is that to you? Has Protagoras wronged you? At this he laughed and,
Yes, by the gods!
he said,
by being the only wise man, and not making me one.
But, by Zeus! I said, if you give him a fee and win him over he will make you wise too.
Would to Zeus and all the gods,
he exclaimed,
310e
only that were needed! I should not spare either my own pocket or those of my friends. But it is on this very account I have come to you now, to see if you will have a talk with him on my behalf: for one thing, I am too young to do it myself; and for another, I have never yet seen Protagoras nor heard him speak a wordI was but a child when he paid us his previous visit.

Soc.

You know, Socrates, how everyone praises the man and tells of his mastery of speech: let us step over to him at once,
311
311a
to make sure of finding him in; he is staying, so I was told, with Callias, son of Hipponicus. Now, let us be going.
To this I replied: We had better not go there yet, my good friend, it is so very early: let us rise and turn into the court here, and spend the time strolling there till daylight comes; after that we can go. Protagoras, you see, spends most of his time indoors, so have no fear, we shall find him in all right, most likely.
So then we got up and strolled in the court;
311b
and I, to test Hippocrates grit, began examining him with a few questions. Tell me, Hippocrates, I said, in your present design of going to Protagoras and paying him money as a fee for his services to yourself, to whom do you consider you are resorting, and what is it that you are to become? Suppose, for example, you had taken it into your head to call on your namesake Hippocrates of Cos, the Asclepiad, and pay him money as your personal fee, and suppose someone asked youTell me, Hippocrates, in purposing to pay
311c
a fee to Hippocrates, what do you consider him to be? How would you answer that?
A doctor, I would say.
And what would you intend to become?
A doctor,
he replied.
And suppose you had a mind to approach Polycleitus the Argive or Pheidias the Athenian and pay them a personal fee, and somebody asked youWhat is it that you consider Polycleitus or Pheidias to be, that you are minded to pay them this money? What would your answer be to that?
Sculptors, I would reply.
And what would you intend to become?
Obviously, a sculptor.
Very well then, I said; you and I will go now to Protagoras,
311d
prepared to pay him money as your fee, from our own means if they are adequate for the purpose of prevailing on him, but if not, then drawing on our friends resources to make up the sum. Now if anyone, observing our extreme earnestness in the matter, should ask us,—Pray, Socrates and Hippocrates, what is it that you take Protagoras to be, when you purpose to pay him money? What should we reply to him? What is the other name that we commonly hear attached to Protagoras? They call Pheidias a sculptor and Homer a poet:
311e
what title do they give Protagoras?
A sophist, to be sure, Socrates, is what they call him.
Then we go to him and pay him the money as a sophist?
Certainly.

Soc.

Now suppose someone asked you this further question:
312
312a
And what is it that you yourself hope to become when you go to Protagoras?
To this he replied with a blushfor by then there was a glimmer of daylight by which I could see him quite clearly
If it is like the previous cases, obviously, to become a sophist.
In Heavens name, I said, would you not be ashamed to present yourself before the Greeks as a sophist?
Yes, on my soul I should, Socrates, if I am to speak my real thoughts.
Yet after all, Hippocrates, perhaps it is not this sort of learning that you expect to get from Protagoras, but rather the sort you had
312b
from your language-master, your harp-teacher, and your sports-instructor; for when you took your lessons from each of these it was not in the technical way, with a view to becoming a professional, but for education, as befits a private gentleman.
I quite agree,
he said;
it is rather this kind of learning that one gets from Protagoras.
Then are you aware what you are now about to do, or is it not clear to you? I asked.
To what do you refer?
I mean your intention of submitting your soul
312c
to the treatment of a man who, as you say, is a sophist; and as to what a sophist really is, I shall be surprised if you can tell me. And yet, if you are ignorant of this, you cannot know to whom you are entrusting your soul,—whether it is to something good or to something evil.
I really think,
he said,
that I know.
Then tell me, please, what you consider a sophist to be.
I should say,
he replied,
from what the name implies, that he is one who has knowledge of wise matters.
Well, I went on, we are able to say this of painters also, and of carpenters,—that they are the persons who have knowledge of wise matters;
312d
and if someone asked us for what those matters are wise, of which painters have knowledge, I suppose we should tell him that they are wise for the production of likenesses, and similarly with the rest. But if he should ask for what the matters of the sophist are wise, how should we answer him? What sort of workmanship is he master of?
How should we describe him, Socrates,—as a master of making one a clever speaker?
Perhaps, I replied, we should be speaking the truth, but yet not all the truth; for our answer still calls for a question, as to the subject on which the sophist makes one a clever speaker: just as the harp player
312e
makes one clever, I presume, at speaking on the matter of which he gives one knowledge, namely harp-playing,—you agree to that?
Yes.
Well, about what does the sophist make one a clever speaker?
Clearly it must be the same thing as that of which he gives one knowledge.
So it would seem: now what is this thing, of which the sophist himself has knowledge and gives knowledge to his pupil?
Ah, there, in good faith,
he said,
I fail to find you an answer.

313
313a
Soc.

I then went on to say: Now tell me, are you aware upon what sort of hazard you are going to stake your soul? If you had to entrust your body to someone, taking the risk of its being made better or worse, you would first consider most carefully whether you ought to entrust it or not, and would seek the advice of your friends and relations and ponder it for a number of days: but in the case of your soul, which you value much more highly than your body, and on which depends the good or ill condition of all your affairs, according as it is made better or worse, would you omit to consult first with either your father

313b
or your brother or one of us your comrades,—as to whether or no you should entrust your very soul to this newly-arrived foreigner; but choose rather, having heard of him in the evening, as you say, and coming to me at dawn, to make no mention of this question, and take no counsel upon itwhether you ought to entrust yourself to him or not; and are ready to spend your own substance and that of your friends, in the settled conviction that at all costs you must converse with Protagoras, whom you neither know, as you tell me, nor have ever met in argument before,
313c
and whom you call sophist, in patent ignorance of what this sophist may be to whom you are about to entrust yourself?
When he heard this he said:
It seems so, Socrates, by what you say.
Then can it be, Hippocrates, that the sophist is really a sort of merchant or dealer in provisions on which a soul is nourished? For such is the view I take of him.
With what, Socrates, is a soul nourished?
With doctrines, presumably, I replied. And we must take care, my good friend, that the sophist, in commending his wares, does not deceive us, as both merchant and dealer do in the case of our bodily food.
313d
For among the provisions, you know, in which these men deal, not only are they themselves ignorant what is good or bad for the body, since in selling they commend them all, but the people who buy from them are so too, unless one happens to be a trainer or a doctor. And in the same way, those who take their doctrines the round of our cities, hawking them about to any odd purchaser who desires them, commend everything that they sell, and there may well be some of these too, my good sir, who are ignorant which of their wares is
313e
good or bad for the soul; and in just the same case are the people who buy from them, unless one happens to have a doctors knowledge here also, but of the soul. So then, if you are well informed as to what is good or bad among these wares, it will be safe for you to buy doctrines from Protagoras or from anyone else you please: but if not, take care, my dear fellow, that you do not risk your greatest treasure on a toss of the dice.

he 60 w 2941
exclaimed 1 w 2950
only 6 w 2955
that 10 w 2959
were 2 w 2963
needed 1 w 2969
I 24 w 2971
should 1 w 2977

or 21 w 3004
those 1 w 3009

I 25 w 3046
have 7 w 3050
come 5 w 3054
to 27 w 3056
you 39 w 3059
now 8 w 3062
to 28 w 3065
see 2 w 3068
if 8 w 3070
you 40 w 3073
will 4 w 3077
have 8 w 3081
a 244 w 3082

on 29 w 3095
my 14 w 3097
behalf 1 w 3103
for 9 w 3107

myself 1 w 3139
and 24 w 3143
for 10 w 3146
another 1 w 3153
I 27 w 3155
have 9 w 3159
never 1 w 3164
yet 1 w 3167
seen 1 w 3171
Protagoras 6 w 3181
nor 1 w 3184
heard 2 w 3189
him 16 w 3192
speak 1 w 3197
a 255 w 3198
word 1 w 3202
I 28 w 3204
was 9 w 3207
but 5 w 3210
a 257 w 3211
child 1 w 3216
when 3 w 3220
he 65 w 3222
paid 2 w 3226
us 18 w 3228
his 10 w 3231
previous 1 w 3239
visit 1 w 3244
Soc 15 w 3248
You 1 w 3252
know 2 w 3256
Socrates 4 w 3265
how 3 w 3269
everyone 1 w 3277
praises 1 w 3284
the 30 w 3287
man 7 w 3290
and 25 w 3293
tells 1 w 3298
of 22 w 3300
his 11 w 3303
mastery 1 w 3310
of 23 w 3312
speech 1 w 3318
let 3 w 3322
us 20 w 3324
step 1 w 3328
over 2 w 3332
to 31 w 3334
him 17 w 3337
at 54 w 3339
once 5 w 3343
to 32 w 3346
make 2 w 3350
sure 3 w 3354
of 24 w 3356
finding 1 w 3363
him 18 w 3366
in 44 w 3368
he 67 w 3371
is 34 w 3373
staying 1 w 3380
so 11 w 3383
I 29 w 3384
was 10 w 3387
told 2 w 3391
with 5 w 3396
Callias 1 w 3403
son 4 w 3407
of 25 w 3409
Hipponicus 1 w 3419
Now 1 w 3423
let 4 w 3427
us 22 w 3429
be 17 w 3431
going 2 w 3436
To 1 w 3439
this 6 w 3443
I 30 w 3444
replied 3 w 3451
We 4 w 3454
had 7 w 3457
better 1 w 3463
not 10 w 3466
go 20 w 3468
there 3 w 3473
yet 2 w 3476
my 16 w 3479
good 5 w 3483
friend 3 w 3489
it 25 w 3492

rise 1 w 3515
and 26 w 3518
turn 2 w 3522
into 1 w 3526
the 32 w 3529
court 1 w 3534
here 8 w 3538
and 27 w 3542
spend 1 w 3547
the 33 w 3550
time 2 w 3554
strolling 1 w 3563
there 4 w 3568
till 2 w 3572
daylight 1 w 3580
comes 1 w 3585
after 2 w 3591
that 11 w 3595
we 10 w 3597
can 2 w 3600
go 22 w 3602
Protagoras 7 w 3613
you 42 w 3617
see 4 w 3620
spends 1 w 3627
most 1 w 3631
of 26 w 3633
his 13 w 3636
time 3 w 3640
indoors 1 w 3647
so 14 w 3650
have 10 w 3654
no 25 w 3656

we 11 w 3663
shall 2 w 3668

in 51 w 3677
all 11 w 3680
right 1 w 3685
most 2 w 3690
likely 1 w 3696
So 19 w 3699
then 2 w 3703
we 12 w 3705
got 4 w 3708
up 3 w 3710
and 28 w 3713
strolled 1 w 3721
in 52 w 3723

and 29 w 3735
I 31 w 3736

Socrates 5 w 4867
and 37 w 4870
Hippocrates 8 w 4881
what 13 w 4886
is 43 w 4888
it 33 w 4890
that 17 w 4894
you 64 w 4897
take 3 w 4901
Protagoras 10 w 4911
to 58 w 4913
be 26 w 4915
when 4 w 4920
you 65 w 4923
purpose 2 w 4930
to 59 w 4932
pay 7 w 4935
him 26 w 4938

What 4 w 4948
should 3 w 4954
we 16 w 4956
reply 2 w 4961
to 60 w 4963
him 27 w 4966
What 5 w 4971
is 44 w 4973
the 49 w 4976
other 6 w 4981
name 2 w 4985
that 18 w 4989
we 17 w 4991
commonly 1 w 4999
hear 4 w 5003
attached 1 w 5011
to 61 w 5013
Protagoras 11 w 5023
They 1 w 5028
call 4 w 5032
Pheidias 3 w 5040
a 389 w 5041
sculptor 2 w 5049
and 38 w 5052
Homer 2 w 5057
a 391 w 5058
poet 1 w 5062
what 14 w 5067
title 1 w 5072
do 13 w 5074
they 3 w 5078
give 3 w 5082
Protagoras 12 w 5092
A 23 w 5094
sophist 1 w 5101
to 63 w 5104
be 27 w 5106
sure 4 w 5110
Socrates 6 w 5119
is 46 w 5122
what 15 w 5126
they 4 w 5130
call 5 w 5134
him 28 w 5137
Then 5 w 5142
we 18 w 5144
go 32 w 5146
to 64 w 5148
him 29 w 5151
and 39 w 5154
pay 8 w 5157
him 30 w 5160
the 53 w 5163
money 6 w 5168
as 50 w 5170
a 401 w 5171

Soc 19 w 5192
Now 3 w 5196

someone 2 w 5210
asked 3 w 5215
you 66 w 5218
this 8 w 5222
further 1 w 5229
question 2 w 5237
And 9 w 5241
what 16 w 5245
is 49 w 5247
it 35 w 5249
that 19 w 5253
you 67 w 5256
yourself 2 w 5264
hope 1 w 5268
to 65 w 5270

when 5 w 5280
you 69 w 5283
go 33 w 5285
to 66 w 5287
Protagoras 13 w 5297
To 2 w 5300
this 9 w 5304
he 104 w 5306
replied 5 w 5313
with 7 w 5317
a 408 w 5318
blush 1 w 5323
for 14 w 5327
by 7 w 5329
then 6 w 5333
there 5 w 5338
was 11 w 5341
a 410 w 5342
glimmer 1 w 5349
of 30 w 5351
daylight 2 w 5359
by 8 w 5361
which 1 w 5366
I 37 w 5367
could 1 w 5372

him 31 w 5378
quite 2 w 5383
clearly 1 w 5390
If 1 w 5393
it 38 w 5395
is 51 w 5397
like 2 w 5401
the 57 w 5404

In 1 w 5447
Heaven 2 w 5453

would 7 w 5471
you 70 w 5474
not 12 w 5477
be 30 w 5479
ashamed 1 w 5486
to 68 w 5488
present 4 w 5495
yourself 3 w 5503
before 1 w 5509
the 58 w 5512
Greeks 1 w 5518
as 56 w 5520
a 421 w 5521
sophist 4 w 5528
Yes 7 w 5532
on 55 w 5535
my 17 w 5537

I 41 w 5542
should 4 w 5548
Socrates 7 w 5557
if 12 w 5560
I 42 w 5561
am 10 w 5563
to 69 w 5565
speak 2 w 5570
my 18 w 5572
real 1 w 5576
thoughts 1 w 5584
Yet 1 w 5588
after 3 w 5593
all 15 w 5596
Hippocrates 9 w 5608
perhaps 1 w 5616
it 39 w 5618
is 54 w 5620
not 13 w 5623
this 10 w 5627
sort 2 w 5631
of 31 w 5633
learning 1 w 5641
that 20 w 5645
you 72 w 5648
expect 1 w 5654
to 70 w 5656
get 3 w 5659
from 3 w 5663
Protagoras 14 w 5673
but 7 w 5677
rather 2 w 5683
the 60 w 5686
sort 3 w 5690
you 73 w 5693
had 10 w 5696
from 4 w 5700
your 11 w 5704
language-master 1 w 5719
your 12 w 5724
harp-teacher 1 w 5736

your 13 w 5744
sports-instructor 1 w 5761
for 16 w 5765
when 6 w 5769
you 77 w 5772

your 14 w 5780
lessons 1 w 5787
from 5 w 5791
each 2 w 5795
of 32 w 5797
these 1 w 5802
it 40 w 5804
was 12 w 5807
not 14 w 5810
in 73 w 5812
the 62 w 5815
technical 1 w 5824
way 3 w 5827
with 8 w 5832
a 446 w 5833
view 1 w 5837
to 73 w 5839
becoming 1 w 5847
a 447 w 5848
professional 1 w 5860
but 8 w 5864
for 17 w 5867
education 1 w 5876
as 60 w 5879
befits 1 w 5885
a 451 w 5886
private 1 w 5893
gentleman 1 w 5902
I 43 w 5904
quite 3 w 5909
agree 2 w 5914
he 115 w 5917
said 13 w 5921
it 44 w 5924
is 56 w 5926
rather 3 w 5932
this 11 w 5936
kind 1 w 5940
of 34 w 5942
learning 2 w 5950
that 21 w 5954
one 14 w 5957
gets 1 w 5961
from 6 w 5965
Protagoras 15 w 5975
Then 6 w 5980
are 10 w 5983
you 79 w 5986
aware 1 w 5991
what 17 w 5995
you 80 w 5998
are 12 w 6001
now 11 w 6004
about 3 w 6009
to 74 w 6011
do 14 w 6013
or 56 w 6016
is 58 w 6018
it 45 w 6020
not 15 w 6023
clear 2 w 6028
to 75 w 6030
you 81 w 6033
I 44 w 6035
asked 4 w 6040
To 3 w 6043
what 18 w 6047
do 15 w 6049
you 82 w 6052
refer 1 w 6057
I 45 w 6059
mean 5 w 6063
your 15 w 6067
intention 1 w 6076
of 35 w 6078
submitting 1 w 6088
your 16 w 6092
soul 2 w 6096
to 76 w 6098
the 64 w 6101
treatment 1 w 6110
of 36 w 6112
a 472 w 6113
man 9 w 6116
who 5 w 6119
as 63 w 6122
you 85 w 6125
say 4 w 6128
is 59 w 6131
a 476 w 6132
sophist 5 w 6139
and 41 w 6143
as 64 w 6145
to 77 w 6147
what 19 w 6151
a 480 w 6152
sophist 6 w 6159
really 1 w 6165
is 62 w 6167
I 46 w 6169
shall 3 w 6174
be 34 w 6176
surprised 1 w 6185
if 13 w 6187
you 86 w 6190
can 3 w 6193
tell 5 w 6197
me 51 w 6199
And 10 w 6203
yet 3 w 6206
if 14 w 6209
you 87 w 6212
are 13 w 6215
ignorant 1 w 6223
of 37 w 6225
this 12 w 6229
you 88 w 6233
cannot 1 w 6239
know 3 w 6243
to 78 w 6245
whom 2 w 6249
you 89 w 6252
are 14 w 6255
entrusting 1 w 6265
your 17 w 6269
soul 3 w 6273
whether 1 w 6282
it 47 w 6284
is 65 w 6286
to 79 w 6288
something 1 w 6297
good 6 w 6301
or 58 w 6303
to 80 w 6305
something 2 w 6314
evil 1 w 6318
I 47 w 6320
really 2 w 6326
think 1 w 6331
he 121 w 6334
said 14 w 6338
that 22 w 6343
I 48 w 6344
know 4 w 6348
Then 7 w 6353
tell 6 w 6357
me 54 w 6359
please 1 w 6366
what 20 w 6371
you 91 w 6374
consider 5 w 6382
a 493 w 6383
sophist 7 w 6390
to 81 w 6392
be 35 w 6394
I 49 w 6396
should 5 w 6402
say 5 w 6405
he 123 w 6408
replied 6 w 6415
from 7 w 6420
what 21 w 6424
the 66 w 6427
name 4 w 6431
implies 1 w 6438
that 23 w 6443
he 125 w 6445
is 67 w 6447
one 15 w 6450
who 7 w 6453
has 6 w 6456
knowledge 1 w 6465
of 38 w 6467
wise 7 w 6471
matters 1 w 6478
Well 4 w 6483
I 50 w 6485
went 1 w 6489
on 63 w 6491
we 20 w 6494
are 15 w 6497
able 1 w 6501
to 82 w 6503
say 6 w 6506
this 13 w 6510
of 39 w 6512
painters 1 w 6520
also 2 w 6524
and 42 w 6528
of 40 w 6530
carpenters 1 w 6540
that 24 w 6546
they 5 w 6550
are 16 w 6553
the 68 w 6556
persons 1 w 6563
who 8 w 6566
have 11 w 6570
knowledge 2 w 6579
of 41 w 6581
wise 8 w 6585
matters 2 w 6592
and 43 w 6596
if 15 w 6598
someone 3 w 6605
asked 5 w 6610
us 32 w 6612
for 18 w 6615
what 22 w 6619
those 2 w 6624
matters 3 w 6631
are 17 w 6634
wise 9 w 6638
of 42 w 6641
which 2 w 6646
painters 2 w 6654
have 12 w 6658
knowledge 3 w 6667
I 51 w 6669
suppose 4 w 6676
we 21 w 6678
should 6 w 6684
tell 7 w 6688
him 32 w 6691
that 25 w 6695
they 6 w 6699
are 18 w 6702
wise 10 w 6706
for 19 w 6709
the 70 w 6712
production 1 w 6722
of 43 w 6724
likenesses 1 w 6734
and 44 w 6738
similarly 1 w 6747
with 9 w 6751
the 71 w 6754
rest 1 w 6758
But 4 w 6762
if 16 w 6764
he 131 w 6766
should 7 w 6772
ask 7 w 6775
for 20 w 6778
what 23 w 6782
the 72 w 6785
matters 4 w 6792
of 44 w 6794
the 73 w 6797
sophist 8 w 6804
are 19 w 6807
wise 11 w 6811
how 4 w 6815
should 8 w 6821
we 22 w 6823
answer 3 w 6829
him 33 w 6832
What 6 w 6837
sort 4 w 6841
of 45 w 6843
workmanship 1 w 6854
is 75 w 6856
he 134 w 6858
master 3 w 6864
of 46 w 6866
How 3 w 6870
should 9 w 6876
we 24 w 6878
describe 1 w 6886
him 34 w 6889
Socrates 8 w 6898
as 70 w 6902
a 532 w 6903
master 4 w 6909
of 47 w 6911
making 2 w 6917
one 17 w 6920
a 535 w 6921
clever 1 w 6927
speaker 1 w 6934
Perhaps 1 w 6942
I 52 w 6944
replied 7 w 6951
we 25 w 6954
should 10 w 6960
be 37 w 6962
speaking 1 w 6970
the 74 w 6973
truth 1 w 6978
but 9 w 6982
yet 4 w 6985
not 17 w 6988
all 19 w 6991
the 75 w 6994
truth 2 w 6999
for 21 w 7003
our 31 w 7006
answer 4 w 7012
still 2 w 7017
calls 1 w 7022
for 22 w 7025
a 542 w 7026
question 3 w 7034
as 72 w 7037
to 83 w 7039
the 76 w 7042
subject 1 w 7049
on 69 w 7051
which 3 w 7056
the 77 w 7059
sophist 9 w 7066
makes 1 w 7071
one 18 w 7074
a 545 w 7075
clever 2 w 7081
speaker 2 w 7088
just 7 w 7093
as 73 w 7095
the 78 w 7098
harp 2 w 7102
player 1 w 7108
makes 2 w 7113
one 19 w 7116
clever 3 w 7122
I 53 w 7124
presume 1 w 7131
at 113 w 7134
speaking 2 w 7142
on 72 w 7144
the 79 w 7147
matter 7 w 7153
of 48 w 7155
which 4 w 7160
he 141 w 7162
gives 1 w 7167
one 20 w 7170
knowledge 4 w 7179
namely 1 w 7186
harp-playing 1 w 7198
you 92 w 7203
agree 3 w 7208
to 84 w 7210
that 26 w 7214
Yes 8 w 7218
Well 5 w 7223
about 4 w 7229
what 24 w 7233
does 1 w 7237
the 80 w 7240
sophist 10 w 7247
make 6 w 7251
one 21 w 7254
a 562 w 7255
clever 4 w 7261
speaker 3 w 7268
Clearly 1 w 7276
it 49 w 7278
must 2 w 7282
be 38 w 7284
the 81 w 7287
same 1 w 7291
thing 6 w 7296
as 74 w 7298
that 27 w 7302
of 49 w 7304
which 5 w 7309
he 144 w 7311
gives 2 w 7316
one 22 w 7319
knowledge 5 w 7328
So 25 w 7331
it 50 w 7333
would 8 w 7338
seem 1 w 7342
now 19 w 7346
what 25 w 7350
is 78 w 7352
this 14 w 7356
thing 7 w 7361
of 50 w 7364
which 6 w 7369
the 82 w 7372
sophist 11 w 7379
himself 1 w 7386
has 7 w 7389
knowledge 6 w 7398
and 45 w 7401
gives 3 w 7406
knowledge 7 w 7415
to 85 w 7417
his 34 w 7420
pupil 1 w 7425
Ah 3 w 7428
there 6 w 7434
in 91 w 7437
good 7 w 7441
faith 1 w 7446
he 147 w 7449
said 15 w 7453
I 54 w 7455
fail 1 w 7459
to 86 w 7461
find 4 w 7465
you 93 w 7468
an 84 w 7470
answer 5 w 7476
Soc 22 w 7480
I 55 w 7482
then 7 w 7486
went 2 w 7490
on 76 w 7492
to 87 w 7494
say 7 w 7497
Now 4 w 7501
tell 8 w 7505
me 60 w 7507
are 20 w 7511
you 94 w 7514
aware 2 w 7519
upon 1 w 7523
what 26 w 7527
sort 5 w 7531
of 51 w 7533
hazard 1 w 7539
you 95 w 7542
are 22 w 7545
going 4 w 7550
to 88 w 7552
stake 1 w 7557
your 18 w 7561
soul 4 w 7565
If 2 w 7568
you 97 w 7571
had 11 w 7574
to 89 w 7576
entrust 2 w 7583
your 19 w 7587
body 2 w 7591
to 90 w 7593
someone 4 w 7600
taking 1 w 7607
the 85 w 7610
risk 1 w 7614
of 52 w 7616
its 2 w 7619
being 2 w 7624
made 3 w 7628
better 2 w 7634

I 59 w 8783
replied 8 w 8790
And 11 w 8794
we 29 w 8796

And 12 w 9142
in 115 w 9144

there 7 w 9287
