A good thing,
he said.
219
219a
And we were saying, I believe, that the body, being neither good nor bad, was a friend of medicinethat is, of a good thingbecause of diseasethat is, because of a bad thing; and it is for the sake of health that medicine has acquired this friendship, and health is a good thing. You agree?
Yes.
Is health a friend or not?
A friend.
And disease is a foe?
Certainly.
So what is neither bad nor good
219b
is a friend to the good because of what is bad and a foe for the sake of what is good and a friend.
Apparently.
Hence the friend is a friend of its friend for the sake of its friend and because of its foe.
So it seems.
Very well, I said: since we have reached this point, my boys, let us take good heed not to be deceived. I pass over without remark the fact that the friend has become a friend to the friend, and thus the like becomes a friend to the like, which we said was impossible. There is, however, a further point which we must examine,
219c
if we are not to find our present argument a mere deception. Medicine, we say, is a friend for the sake of health.
Yes.
Then is health a friend also?
Certainly.
And if it is a friend, it is so for the sake of something.
Yes.
And that something is a friend, if it is to conform to our previous agreement.
Quite so.
Then will that something be, on its part also, a friend for the sake of a friend?
Yes.
Now are we not bound to weary ourselves with going on in this way, unless we can arrive at some first principle which will not keep leading us on from one friend to another, but will reach the one original friend, for whose sake all the other things can be said
219d
to be friends?
We must.
So you see what I am afraid ofthat all the other things, which we cited as friends for the sake of that one thing, may be deceiving us like so many phantoms of it, while that original thing may be the veritable friend. For suppose we view the matter thus: when a man highly values a thing, as in the common case of a father who prizes his son above all his possessions, will such a man, for the sake of placing his son before everything,
219e
value anything else highly at the same time? For instance, on learning that he had drunk some hemlock, would he value wine highly if he believed it would save his sons life?
Why, of course,
he said. And the vessel too which contained the wine?
Certainly.
Now does he make no distinction in value, at that moment, between a cup of earthenware and his own son, or between three pints of wine and his son?

A 1 w 1
good 1 w 5
thing 1 w 10
he 1 w 13
said 1 w 17
And 1 w 21
we 1 w 23
were 1 w 27
saying 1 w 33
I 1 w 35
believe 1 w 42
that 1 w 47
the 1 w 50
body 1 w 54
being 1 w 60
neither 1 w 67
good 2 w 71
nor 1 w 74
bad 1 w 77
was 1 w 81
a 6 w 82

of 1 w 90

that 2 w 103
is 1 w 105
of 2 w 108
a 8 w 109
good 3 w 113
thing 2 w 118
because 1 w 126
of 3 w 128
disease 1 w 135
that 3 w 140
is 3 w 142
because 2 w 150
of 4 w 152
a 13 w 153
bad 2 w 156
thing 3 w 161
and 1 w 165
it 2 w 167
is 4 w 169
for 1 w 172
the 3 w 175
sake 1 w 179
of 5 w 181
health 1 w 187
that 4 w 191
medicine 2 w 199
has 1 w 202
acquired 1 w 210
this 1 w 214
friendship 1 w 224
and 2 w 228
health 2 w 234
is 6 w 236
a 23 w 237
good 4 w 241
thing 4 w 246
You 1 w 250
agree 1 w 255
Yes 1 w 259
Is 1 w 262
health 3 w 268
a 26 w 269
friend 3 w 275
or 3 w 277
not 1 w 280
A 3 w 282
friend 4 w 288
And 2 w 292
disease 2 w 299
is 8 w 301
a 28 w 302
foe 1 w 305
Certainly 1 w 315
So 1 w 318
what 1 w 322
is 9 w 324
neither 2 w 331
bad 3 w 334
nor 2 w 337
good 5 w 341
is 10 w 343
a 32 w 344
friend 5 w 350
to 1 w 352
the 5 w 355
good 6 w 359
because 3 w 366
of 6 w 368
what 2 w 372
is 11 w 374
bad 4 w 377
and 3 w 380
a 37 w 381
foe 2 w 384
for 2 w 387
the 6 w 390
sake 2 w 394
of 7 w 396
what 3 w 400
is 12 w 402
good 7 w 406
and 4 w 409
a 41 w 410
friend 6 w 416
Apparently 1 w 427
Hence 1 w 433
the 7 w 436
friend 7 w 442
is 13 w 444
a 43 w 445
friend 8 w 451
of 8 w 453
its 1 w 456
friend 9 w 462
for 3 w 465
the 8 w 468
sake 3 w 472
of 9 w 474
its 2 w 477
friend 10 w 483
and 5 w 486
because 4 w 493
of 10 w 495
its 3 w 498
foe 3 w 501
So 2 w 504
it 7 w 506
seems 1 w 511
Very 1 w 516
well 1 w 520
I 3 w 522
said 2 w 526
since 1 w 532
we 4 w 534
have 1 w 538
reached 1 w 545
this 2 w 549
point 1 w 554
my 1 w 557
boys 1 w 561
let 1 w 565
us 5 w 567
take 1 w 571
good 8 w 575
heed 1 w 579
not 2 w 582
to 2 w 584
be 7 w 586
deceived 1 w 594
I 4 w 596
pass 1 w 600
over 1 w 604
without 1 w 611
remark 1 w 617
the 9 w 620
fact 1 w 624
that 5 w 628
the 10 w 631
friend 11 w 637
has 2 w 640
become 1 w 646
a 56 w 647
friend 12 w 653
to 3 w 655
the 11 w 658
friend 13 w 664
and 6 w 668
thus 1 w 672
the 12 w 675
like 1 w 679
becomes 1 w 686
a 58 w 687
friend 14 w 693
to 4 w 695
the 13 w 698
like 2 w 702
which 1 w 708
we 5 w 710
said 3 w 714
was 2 w 717
impossible 1 w 727
There 1 w 733
is 15 w 735
however 1 w 743
a 61 w 745
further 1 w 752
point 2 w 757
which 2 w 762
we 7 w 764
must 1 w 768
examine 1 w 775
if 1 w 778
we 8 w 780
are 2 w 783
not 3 w 786
to 5 w 788
find 1 w 792
our 1 w 795
present 1 w 802
argument 1 w 810
a 65 w 811
mere 1 w 815
deception 1 w 824
Medicine 1 w 833
we 9 w 836
say 2 w 839
is 16 w 842
a 67 w 843
friend 15 w 849
for 4 w 852
the 15 w 855
sake 4 w 859
of 11 w 861
health 4 w 867
Yes 2 w 871
Then 1 w 876
is 17 w 878
health 5 w 884
a 71 w 885
friend 16 w 891
also 1 w 895
Certainly 2 w 905
And 3 w 909
if 2 w 911
it 9 w 913
is 18 w 915
a 74 w 916
friend 17 w 922
it 10 w 925
is 19 w 927
so 2 w 929
for 5 w 932
the 16 w 935
sake 5 w 939
of 12 w 941
something 1 w 950
Yes 3 w 954
And 4 w 958
that 6 w 962
something 2 w 971
is 20 w 973
a 77 w 974
friend 18 w 980
if 3 w 983
it 11 w 985
is 21 w 987
to 6 w 989
conform 1 w 996
to 7 w 998
our 2 w 1001
previous 1 w 1009
agreement 1 w 1018
Quite 1 w 1024
so 5 w 1026
Then 2 w 1031
will 1 w 1035
that 7 w 1039
something 3 w 1048
be 10 w 1050
on 3 w 1053
its 4 w 1056
part 1 w 1060
also 2 w 1064
a 82 w 1066
friend 19 w 1072
for 7 w 1075
the 17 w 1078
sake 6 w 1082
of 13 w 1084
a 84 w 1085
friend 20 w 1091
Yes 4 w 1095
Now 1 w 1099
are 3 w 1102
we 10 w 1104
not 4 w 1107
bound 1 w 1112
to 8 w 1114
weary 1 w 1119
ourselves 1 w 1128
with 2 w 1132
going 1 w 1137
on 4 w 1139
in 21 w 1141
this 3 w 1145
way 1 w 1148
unless 1 w 1155
we 12 w 1157
can 1 w 1160
arrive 1 w 1166
at 11 w 1168
some 4 w 1172
first 1 w 1177
principle 1 w 1186
which 3 w 1191
will 2 w 1195
not 5 w 1198
keep 1 w 1202
leading 1 w 1209
us 9 w 1211
on 5 w 1213
from 1 w 1217
one 1 w 1220
friend 21 w 1226
to 9 w 1228
another 1 w 1235
but 1 w 1239
will 3 w 1243
reach 2 w 1248
the 19 w 1251
one 2 w 1254
original 1 w 1262
friend 22 w 1268
for 8 w 1272
whose 1 w 1277
sake 7 w 1281
all 1 w 1284
the 20 w 1287
other 2 w 1292
things 1 w 1298
can 2 w 1301
be 11 w 1303
said 4 w 1307
to 10 w 1309
be 12 w 1311
friends 2 w 1318
We 1 w 1321
must 2 w 1325
So 3 w 1328
you 1 w 1331
see 2 w 1334
what 4 w 1338
I 5 w 1339
am 2 w 1341
afraid 1 w 1347
of 14 w 1349
that 8 w 1354
all 2 w 1357
the 22 w 1360
other 3 w 1365
things 2 w 1371
which 4 w 1377
we 13 w 1379
cited 1 w 1384
as 8 w 1386
friends 3 w 1393
for 9 w 1396
the 24 w 1399
sake 8 w 1403
of 15 w 1405
that 9 w 1409
one 3 w 1412
thing 10 w 1417
may 1 w 1421
be 13 w 1423
deceiving 1 w 1432
us 11 w 1434
like 3 w 1438
so 9 w 1440
many 1 w 1444
phantoms 1 w 1452
of 16 w 1454
it 16 w 1456
while 1 w 1462
that 10 w 1466
original 2 w 1474
thing 11 w 1479
may 2 w 1482
be 14 w 1484
the 25 w 1487
veritable 1 w 1496
friend 25 w 1502
For 1 w 1506
suppose 1 w 1513
we 14 w 1515
view 1 w 1519
the 26 w 1522
matter 1 w 1528
thus 2 w 1532
when 1 w 1537
a 116 w 1538
man 2 w 1541
highly 1 w 1547
values 1 w 1553
a 119 w 1554
thing 12 w 1559
as 9 w 1562
in 32 w 1564
the 27 w 1567
common 1 w 1573
case 1 w 1577
of 17 w 1579
a 122 w 1580
father 1 w 1586
who 2 w 1589
prizes 1 w 1595
his 4 w 1598
son 1 w 1601
above 1 w 1606
all 3 w 1609
his 5 w 1612
possessions 1 w 1623
will 4 w 1628
such 1 w 1632
a 126 w 1633
man 3 w 1636
for 10 w 1640
the 29 w 1643
sake 9 w 1647
of 18 w 1649
placing 1 w 1656
his 6 w 1659
son 2 w 1662
before 1 w 1668
everything 1 w 1678
value 2 w 1684
anything 1 w 1692
else 1 w 1696
highly 2 w 1702
at 18 w 1704
the 30 w 1707
same 1 w 1711
time 1 w 1715
For 2 w 1719
instance 1 w 1727
on 13 w 1730
learning 1 w 1738
that 11 w 1742
he 43 w 1744
had 1 w 1747
drunk 1 w 1752
some 5 w 1756
hemlock 1 w 1763
would 1 w 1769
he 45 w 1771
value 3 w 1776
wine 1 w 1780
highly 3 w 1786
if 4 w 1788
he 46 w 1790
believed 1 w 1798
it 18 w 1800
would 2 w 1805
save 1 w 1809
his 7 w 1812
son 3 w 1815
s 122 w 1817
life 1 w 1821
Why 1 w 1825
of 19 w 1828
course 1 w 1834
he 47 w 1837
said 5 w 1841
And 5 w 1845
the 31 w 1848
vessel 1 w 1854
too 1 w 1857
which 5 w 1862
contained 1 w 1871
the 32 w 1874
wine 2 w 1878
Certainly 3 w 1888
Now 2 w 1892
does 1 w 1896
he 50 w 1898
make 1 w 1902
no 9 w 1904
distinction 1 w 1915
in 43 w 1917
value 4 w 1922
at 20 w 1925
that 12 w 1929
moment 1 w 1935
between 1 w 1943
a 147 w 1944
cup 1 w 1947
of 20 w 1949
earthenware 1 w 1960
and 7 w 1963
his 8 w 1966
own 1 w 1969
son 4 w 1972
or 19 w 1975
between 2 w 1982
three 1 w 1987
pints 1 w 1992
of 21 w 1994
wine 3 w 1998
and 8 w 2001
his 9 w 2004
son 5 w 2007
