Now then, said Socrates, keep carefully in mind what is the object of Love, and only tell me whether he desires the particular thing that is his object.
Yes, to be sure, he replied.
Has he or has he not the object of his desire and love when he desires and loves it?
He does not have it, most likely, he said.
Not as a likelihood, said Socrates, but as a necessity,
200b
consider if the desiring subject must have desire for something it lacks, and again, no desire if it has no lack. I at least, Agathon, am perfectly sure it is a necessity. How does it strike you?
I am sure of it also, said he.
Very good. Now could a tall man wish to be tall, or a strong man to be strong?
By what has been admitted, this is impossible.
Since, I suppose, the man in each case would not be lacking the quality mentioned.
True.
For if, being strong, he should wish to be strong, said Socrates, or being swift, to be swift, or being healthy, to be healthy,—since we are apt to suppose in these
200c
and all such cases that men of this or that sort, possessing these qualities, do also desire what they have already: I put this in, to prevent any misconception; these men, Agathon, if you consider, are bound to have at the very moment each thing that they have whether they wish it or not; and how, I ask, is a man going to desire that? No, when a person says, I being healthy, want to be healthy; being rich, I want to be rich; I desire the very things that I havewe shall tell him,
200d
My good sir, riches you possess, and health and strength, which you would like to possess in the future also: for the time now present you have them whether you would or no. When you say, I desire these present things, we suggest you are merely saying I wish these things now present to be present also in the future. Would he not admit our point? To this Agathon assented.
And so, continued Socrates, a man may be said to love a thing not yet provided or possessed, when he would have the presence of certain things secured to him for ever in the future.
Certainly, he said.
200e
Then such a person, and in general all who feel desire, feel it for what is not provided or present; for something they have not or are not or lack and that sort of thing is the object of desire and love?
Assuredly, he said.
Now then, said Socrates, let us agree to what we have so far concluded. First, is not Love directed to certain things of which, in the second place, he has a want?

Yes, he said.
201
201a
Then, granting this, recollect what things you named in our discussion as the objects of Love: if you like, I will remind you. What you said, I believe, was to the effect that the gods contrived the world from a love of beautiful things, for of ugly there was no love. Did you not say something of the sort?
Yes, I did, said Agathon.
And quite properly, my friend, said Socrates; then, such being the case, must not Love be only love of beauty, and not of ugliness? He assented.
201b
Well then, we have agreed that he loves what he lacks and has not?
Yes, he replied.
And what Love lacks and has not is beauty?
That needs must be, he said.
Well now, will you say that what lacks beauty, and in no wise possesses it, is beautiful?
Surely not.
So can you still allow Love to be beautiful, if this is the case?
Whereupon Agathon said, I greatly fear, Socrates, I knew nothing of what I was talking about.
201c
Ah, your words were beautiful enough, Agathon; but pray give me one or two more: you hold, do you not, that good things are beautiful?
I do.
Then if Love lacks beautiful things, and good things are beautiful, he must lack good things too.
I see no means, Socrates, of contradicting you, he replied; let it be as you say.
No, it is Truth, my lovable Agathon,
201d
whom you cannot contradict: Socrates you easily may. The Speech of Socrates
And now I shall let you alone, and proceed with the discourse upon Love which I heard one day from a Mantinean woman named Diotima: [*] in this subject she was skilled, and in many others too; for once, by bidding the Athenians offer sacrifices ten years before the plague, she procured them so much delay in the advent of the sickness. Well, I also had my lesson from her in love-matters; so now I will try and follow up the points on which Agathon and I have just agreed by narrating to you all on my own account, as well as I am able, the speech she delivered to me. So first, Agathon, I must unfold,
201e
in your manner of exposition, who and what sort of being is Love, and then I shall tell of his works. The readiest way, I think, will be to give my description that form of question and answer which the stranger woman used for hers that day. For I spoke to her in much the same terms as Agathon addressed just now to me, saying Love was a great god, and was of beautiful things; and she refuted me with the very arguments I have brought against our young friend, showing that by my account that god was neither beautiful nor good.
How do you mean, Diotima? said I; is Love then ugly and bad?
Peace, for shame! she replied: or do you imagine that whatever is not beautiful must needs be ugly?

Love 6 w 2583
to 20 w 2585
be 27 w 2587
beautiful 3 w 2596
if 11 w 2599
this 6 w 2603
is 26 w 2605
the 40 w 2608
case 4 w 2612
Whereupon 1 w 2622
Agathon 5 w 2629
said 15 w 2633
I 15 w 2635
greatly 1 w 2642
fear 1 w 2646
Socrates 7 w 2655
I 16 w 2657
knew 1 w 2661
nothing 1 w 2668
of 15 w 2670
what 10 w 2674
I 17 w 2675
was 3 w 2678
talking 1 w 2685
about 1 w 2690
Ah 1 w 2693
your 1 w 2698
words 1 w 2703
were 1 w 2707
beautiful 4 w 2716
enough 1 w 2722
Agathon 6 w 2730
but 2 w 2734
pray 1 w 2738
give 1 w 2742
me 12 w 2744
one 2 w 2747
or 24 w 2749
two 1 w 2752
more 1 w 2756
you 17 w 2760
hold 1 w 2764
do 4 w 2767
you 18 w 2770
not 18 w 2773
that 11 w 2778
good 3 w 2782
things 8 w 2788
are 6 w 2791
beautiful 5 w 2800
I 18 w 2802
do 5 w 2804
Then 3 w 2809
if 14 w 2811
Love 7 w 2815
lacks 5 w 2820
beautiful 6 w 2829
things 9 w 2835
and 16 w 2839
good 4 w 2843
things 10 w 2849
are 7 w 2852
beautiful 7 w 2861
he 76 w 2864
must 4 w 2868
lack 9 w 2872
good 5 w 2876
things 11 w 2882
too 1 w 2885
I 19 w 2887
see 1 w 2890
no 28 w 2892
means 1 w 2897
Socrates 8 w 2906
of 16 w 2909
contradicting 1 w 2922
you 19 w 2925
he 77 w 2928
replied 3 w 2935
let 2 w 2939
it 18 w 2941
be 33 w 2943
as 22 w 2945
you 20 w 2948
say 6 w 2951
No 6 w 2954
it 19 w 2957
is 27 w 2959
Truth 1 w 2964
my 2 w 2967
lovable 1 w 2974
Agathon 7 w 2981
whom 1 w 2986
you 21 w 2989
cannot 1 w 2995
contradict 2 w 3005
Socrates 9 w 3014
you 22 w 3017
easily 1 w 3023
may 2 w 3026
The 4 w 3030
Speech 1 w 3036
of 17 w 3038
Socrates 10 w 3046
And 4 w 3049
now 4 w 3052
I 20 w 3053
shall 2 w 3058
let 3 w 3061
you 23 w 3064
alone 1 w 3069
and 17 w 3073
proceed 1 w 3080
with 1 w 3084
the 41 w 3087
discourse 1 w 3096
upon 2 w 3100
Love 8 w 3104
which 3 w 3109
I 21 w 3110
heard 1 w 3115
one 4 w 3118
day 1 w 3121
from 2 w 3125
a 219 w 3126
Mantinean 1 w 3135
woman 1 w 3140
named 2 w 3145
Diotima 1 w 3152
These 1 w 3158
names 1 w 3163
suggest 2 w 3170
a 226 w 3171
connection 1 w 3181
respectively 1 w 3193
with 2 w 3197
prophecy 1 w 3205
and 18 w 3208
with 3 w 3212
the 42 w 3215
favor 1 w 3220
of 18 w 3222
Heaven 1 w 3228
in 57 w 3231
this 7 w 3235
subject 2 w 3242
she 1 w 3245
was 4 w 3248
skilled 1 w 3255
and 19 w 3259
in 58 w 3261
many 1 w 3265
others 1 w 3271
too 2 w 3274
for 7 w 3278
once 2 w 3282
by 1 w 3285
bidding 1 w 3292
the 44 w 3295
Athenians 1 w 3304
offer 1 w 3309
sacrifices 1 w 3319
ten 1 w 3322
years 1 w 3327
before 1 w 3333
the 46 w 3336
plague 1 w 3342
she 2 w 3346
procured 1 w 3354
them 2 w 3358
so 15 w 3360
much 1 w 3364
delay 1 w 3369
in 60 w 3371
the 48 w 3374
advent 1 w 3380
of 20 w 3382
the 49 w 3385
sickness 1 w 3393
Well 3 w 3398
I 22 w 3400
also 5 w 3404
had 1 w 3407
my 3 w 3409
lesson 1 w 3415
from 3 w 3419
her 7 w 3422
in 61 w 3424
love-matters 1 w 3436
so 18 w 3439
now 5 w 3442
I 23 w 3443
will 3 w 3447
try 1 w 3450
and 20 w 3453
follow 1 w 3459
up 5 w 3461
the 50 w 3464
points 1 w 3470
on 37 w 3472
which 4 w 3477
Agathon 8 w 3484
and 21 w 3487
I 24 w 3488
have 12 w 3492
just 1 w 3496
agreed 2 w 3502
by 2 w 3504
narrating 1 w 3513
to 23 w 3515
you 24 w 3518
all 8 w 3521
on 39 w 3523
my 4 w 3525
own 1 w 3528
account 1 w 3535
as 25 w 3538
well 1 w 3542
as 26 w 3544
I 25 w 3545
am 6 w 3547
able 2 w 3551
the 51 w 3555
speech 1 w 3561
she 3 w 3564
delivered 1 w 3573
to 24 w 3575
me 16 w 3577
So 12 w 3580
first 1 w 3585
Agathon 9 w 3593
I 26 w 3595
must 5 w 3599
unfold 1 w 3605
in 64 w 3608
your 2 w 3612
manner 1 w 3618
of 21 w 3620
exposition 1 w 3630
who 3 w 3634
and 22 w 3637
what 11 w 3641
sort 4 w 3645
of 22 w 3647
being 7 w 3652
is 30 w 3654
Love 9 w 3658
and 23 w 3662
then 6 w 3666
I 27 w 3667
shall 3 w 3672
tell 3 w 3676
of 23 w 3678
his 10 w 3681
works 1 w 3686
The 6 w 3690
readiest 1 w 3698
way 1 w 3701
I 28 w 3703
think 1 w 3708
will 4 w 3713
be 36 w 3715
to 25 w 3717
give 2 w 3721
my 5 w 3723
description 1 w 3734
that 12 w 3738
form 1 w 3742
of 24 w 3744
question 1 w 3752
and 24 w 3755
answer 1 w 3761
which 5 w 3766
the 53 w 3769
stranger 1 w 3777
woman 2 w 3782
used 1 w 3786
for 10 w 3789
hers 2 w 3793
that 13 w 3797
day 2 w 3800
For 2 w 3804
I 29 w 3805
spoke 1 w 3810
to 26 w 3812
her 9 w 3815
in 67 w 3817
much 2 w 3821
the 54 w 3824
same 1 w 3828
terms 1 w 3833
as 27 w 3835
Agathon 10 w 3842
addressed 1 w 3851
just 2 w 3855
now 6 w 3858
to 27 w 3860
me 18 w 3862
saying 2 w 3869
Love 10 w 3873
was 5 w 3876
a 276 w 3877
great 2 w 3882
god 2 w 3885
and 25 w 3889
was 6 w 3892
of 25 w 3894
beautiful 8 w 3903
things 12 w 3909
and 26 w 3913
she 4 w 3916
refuted 1 w 3923
me 19 w 3925
with 4 w 3929
the 55 w 3932
very 3 w 3936
arguments 1 w 3945
I 30 w 3946
have 13 w 3950
brought 1 w 3957
against 1 w 3964
our 6 w 3967
young 1 w 3972
friend 2 w 3978
showing 1 w 3986
that 14 w 3990
by 3 w 3992
my 6 w 3994
account 2 w 4001
that 15 w 4005
god 3 w 4008
was 7 w 4011
neither 1 w 4018
beautiful 9 w 4027
nor 1 w 4030
good 6 w 4034
How 2 w 4038
do 6 w 4040
you 27 w 4043
mean 2 w 4047
Diotima 2 w 4055
said 16 w 4060
I 31 w 4061
is 32 w 4064
Love 11 w 4068
then 7 w 4072
ugly 2 w 4076
and 27 w 4079
bad 1 w 4082
Peace 1 w 4088
for 11 w 4092
shame 1 w 4097
she 5 w 4101
replied 4 w 4108
or 36 w 4111
do 7 w 4113
you 28 w 4116
imagine 1 w 4123
that 16 w 4127
whatever 1 w 4135
is 33 w 4137
not 20 w 4140
beautiful 10 w 4149
must 6 w 4153
needs 2 w 4158
be 40 w 4160
ugly 3 w 4164
