At the end of Agathons speech, as Aristodemus told me, there was tumultuous applause from all present, at hearing the youngster speak in terms so appropriate to himself and to the god. Then Socrates, with a glance at Eryximachus, said: Son of Acumenus, do you really call it an unfearful fear that has all this while affrighted me, and myself no prophet in saying just now that Agathon would make a marvellous speech, and I be hard put to it?
In one part of your statement, that he would speak finely, replied Eryximachus,
198b
I think you were a true prophet; but as to your being hard put to it, I do not agree.
But surely, my good sir, said Socrates, I am bound to be hard put, I or anyone else in the world who should have to speak after such a fine assortment of eloquence. The greater part of it was not so very astounding; but when we drew towards the close, the beauty of the words and phrases could not but take ones breath away. For myself, indeed, I was so conscious that I should fail to say anything
198c
half as fine, that for very shame I was on the point of slinking away, had I had any chance. For his speech so reminded me of Gorgias that I was exactly in the plight described by Homer: [*] I feared that Agathon in his final phrases would confront me with the eloquent Gorgias head, and by opposing his speech to mine would turn me thus dumbfounded into stone. And so in that moment I realized what a ridiculous fool I was to fall in with your proposal that I should take my turn in your eulogies of Love,
198d
and to call myself an expert in love-matters, when really I was ignorant of the method in which eulogies ought to be made at all. For I was such a silly wretch as to think that one ought in each case to speak the truth about the person eulogized; on this assumption I hoped we might pick out the fairest of the facts and set these forth in their comeliest guise. I was quite elated with the notion of what a fine speech I should make, for I felt that I knew the truth. But now, it appears that this is not what is meant by a good speech of praise;
198e
which is rather an ascription of all the highest and fairest qualities, whether the case be so or not; it is really no matter if they are untrue. Our arrangement, it seems, was that each should appear to eulogize Love, not that he should make a real eulogy.

Hence it is, sirs, I suppose, that you muster every kind of phrase for your tribute to Love, declaring such and such to be his character and influence, in order to present him
199
199a
in the best and fairest light; successfully, of course, before those who do not know him, though it must be otherwise before those who do; your praise has such a fine impressive air! No, I find I was quite mistaken as to the method required; it was in ignorance that I agreed to take my turn in the round of praising. The tongue, you see, undertook, the mind did not; [*] so good-bye to my bond. I am not to be called upon now as an eulogist in your sense; for such I cannot be.
199b
Nevertheless I am ready, if you like, to speak the mere truth in my own way; not to rival your discourses, and so be your laughing-stock. Decide then, Phaedrus, whether you have any need of such a speech besides, and would like to hear the truth told about Love in whatsoever style of terms and phrases may chance to occur by the way.
So Phaedrus and the others bade him speak, just in any manner he himself should think fit.
Then allow me further, Phaedrus, to put some little questions to Agathon, so as to secure his agreement before I begin my speech.
199c
You have my leave, said Phaedrus; so ask him. After that, my friend told me, Socrates started off in this sort of way:
I must say, my dear Agathon, you gave your speech an excellent introduction, by stating that your duty was first to display the character of Love, and then to treat of his acts. Those opening words I thoroughly admire. So come now, complete your beautiful and magnificent description of Love,
199d
and tell me this: Are we so to view his character as to take Love to be love of some object, or of none? My question is not whether he is love of a mother or a fatherhow absurd it would be to ask whether Love is love of mother or father but as though I were asking about our notion of father, whether ones father is a father of somebody or not. Surely you would say, if you cared to give the proper answer, that the father is father of son or of daughter, would you not?
Yes, of course, said Agathon.
And you would say the same of the mother? He agreed to this too.
199e
Then will you give me just a few more answers, said Socrates, so that you may the better grasp my meaning? Suppose I were to ask you, Well now, a brother, viewed in the abstract, is he brother of somebody or not?
He is, said Agathon.
That is, of brother or of sister? He agreed.
Now try and tell me about Love: is he a love of nothing or of something?

Of something, to be sure.

I 28 w 2612
cannot 1 w 2618
be 14 w 2620
Nevertheless 1 w 2633
I 29 w 2634
am 5 w 2636
ready 1 w 2641
if 2 w 2644
you 13 w 2647
like 1 w 2651
to 34 w 2654
speak 5 w 2659
the 36 w 2662
mere 1 w 2666
truth 3 w 2671
in 46 w 2673
my 8 w 2675
own 1 w 2678
way 3 w 2681
not 12 w 2685
to 35 w 2687
rival 1 w 2692
your 8 w 2696
discourses 1 w 2706
and 12 w 2710
so 11 w 2712
be 15 w 2714
your 9 w 2718
laughing-stock 1 w 2732
Decide 1 w 2739
then 1 w 2743
Phaedrus 1 w 2752
whether 2 w 2760
you 16 w 2763
have 2 w 2767
any 4 w 2770
need 1 w 2774
of 20 w 2776
such 7 w 2780
a 212 w 2781
speech 7 w 2787
besides 1 w 2794
and 13 w 2798
would 5 w 2803
like 2 w 2807
to 37 w 2809
hear 2 w 2813
the 39 w 2816
truth 4 w 2821
told 2 w 2825
about 2 w 2830
Love 4 w 2834
in 48 w 2836
whatsoever 1 w 2846
style 1 w 2851
of 21 w 2853
terms 2 w 2858
and 14 w 2861
phrases 3 w 2868
may 1 w 2871
chance 2 w 2877
to 39 w 2879
occur 1 w 2884
by 5 w 2886
the 40 w 2889
way 4 w 2892
So 4 w 2895
Phaedrus 2 w 2903
and 15 w 2906
the 41 w 2909
others 1 w 2915
bade 1 w 2919
him 4 w 2922
speak 6 w 2927
just 3 w 2932
in 49 w 2934
any 5 w 2937
manner 1 w 2943
he 62 w 2945
himself 2 w 2952
should 7 w 2958
think 3 w 2963
fit 1 w 2966
Then 2 w 2971
allow 1 w 2976
me 18 w 2978
further 1 w 2985
Phaedrus 3 w 2994
to 40 w 2997
put 4 w 3000
some 1 w 3004
little 1 w 3010
questions 1 w 3019
to 41 w 3021
Agathon 5 w 3028
so 14 w 3031
as 35 w 3033
to 42 w 3035
secure 1 w 3041
his 9 w 3044
agreement 1 w 3053
before 3 w 3059
I 30 w 3060
begin 1 w 3065
my 9 w 3067
speech 8 w 3073
You 1 w 3077
have 3 w 3081
my 10 w 3083
leave 1 w 3088
said 3 w 3093
Phaedrus 4 w 3101
so 15 w 3104
ask 1 w 3107
him 6 w 3110
After 1 w 3116
that 18 w 3120
my 11 w 3123
friend 1 w 3129
told 3 w 3133
me 21 w 3135
Socrates 3 w 3144
started 1 w 3151
off 1 w 3154
in 52 w 3156
this 4 w 3160
sort 2 w 3164
of 23 w 3166
way 5 w 3169
I 31 w 3171
must 3 w 3175
say 3 w 3178
my 12 w 3181
dear 1 w 3185
Agathon 6 w 3192
you 17 w 3196
gave 1 w 3200
your 10 w 3204
speech 9 w 3210
an 35 w 3212
excellent 1 w 3221
introduction 1 w 3233
by 6 w 3236
stating 1 w 3243
that 19 w 3247
your 11 w 3251
duty 1 w 3255
was 13 w 3258
first 1 w 3263
to 44 w 3265
display 2 w 3272
the 44 w 3275
character 2 w 3284
of 24 w 3286
Love 5 w 3290
and 16 w 3294
then 2 w 3298
to 45 w 3300
treat 1 w 3305
of 25 w 3307
his 11 w 3310
acts 2 w 3314
Those 1 w 3320
opening 1 w 3327
words 2 w 3332
I 32 w 3333
thoroughly 1 w 3343
admire 1 w 3349
So 6 w 3352
come 2 w 3356
now 5 w 3359
complete 1 w 3368
your 12 w 3372
beautiful 1 w 3381
and 17 w 3384
magnificent 1 w 3395
description 1 w 3406
of 26 w 3408
Love 6 w 3412
and 18 w 3416
tell 1 w 3420
me 23 w 3422
this 5 w 3426
Are 1 w 3430
we 4 w 3432
so 17 w 3434
to 46 w 3436
view 1 w 3440
his 13 w 3443
character 3 w 3452
as 38 w 3454
to 47 w 3456
take 5 w 3460
Love 7 w 3464
to 48 w 3466
be 20 w 3468
love 2 w 3472
of 27 w 3474
some 2 w 3478
object 1 w 3484
or 31 w 3487
of 28 w 3489
none 1 w 3493
My 1 w 3496
question 2 w 3504
is 32 w 3506
not 13 w 3509
whether 3 w 3516
he 69 w 3518
is 33 w 3520
love 3 w 3524
of 29 w 3526
a 265 w 3527
mother 1 w 3533
or 32 w 3535
a 266 w 3536
father 1 w 3542
how 1 w 3546
absurd 1 w 3552
it 20 w 3554
would 6 w 3559
be 21 w 3561
to 49 w 3563
ask 2 w 3566
whether 4 w 3573
Love 8 w 3577
is 34 w 3579
love 4 w 3583
of 30 w 3585
mother 2 w 3591
or 33 w 3593
father 2 w 3599
but 5 w 3603
as 40 w 3605
though 2 w 3611
I 33 w 3612
were 2 w 3616
asking 1 w 3622
about 3 w 3627
our 15 w 3630
notion 2 w 3636
of 31 w 3638
father 3 w 3644
whether 5 w 3652
one 8 w 3655
s 246 w 3657
father 4 w 3663
is 35 w 3665
a 276 w 3666
father 5 w 3672
of 32 w 3674
somebody 1 w 3682
or 34 w 3684
not 15 w 3687
Surely 1 w 3694
you 21 w 3697
would 7 w 3702
say 4 w 3705
if 5 w 3708
you 22 w 3711
cared 1 w 3716
to 50 w 3718
give 1 w 3722
the 56 w 3725
proper 1 w 3731
answer 1 w 3737
that 20 w 3742
the 57 w 3745
father 6 w 3751
is 36 w 3753
father 7 w 3759
of 33 w 3761
son 2 w 3764
or 35 w 3766
of 34 w 3768
daughter 1 w 3776
would 8 w 3782
you 23 w 3785
not 16 w 3788
Yes 1 w 3792
of 35 w 3795
course 3 w 3801
said 4 w 3806
Agathon 7 w 3813
And 2 w 3817
you 24 w 3820
would 9 w 3825
say 5 w 3828
the 60 w 3831
same 1 w 3835
of 36 w 3837
the 61 w 3840
mother 3 w 3846
He 2 w 3849
agreed 2 w 3855
to 51 w 3857
this 6 w 3861
too 2 w 3864
Then 3 w 3869
will 2 w 3873
you 25 w 3876
give 2 w 3880
me 27 w 3882
just 4 w 3886
a 290 w 3887
few 1 w 3890
more 1 w 3894
answers 1 w 3901
said 5 w 3906
Socrates 4 w 3914
so 21 w 3917
that 21 w 3921
you 26 w 3924
may 2 w 3927
the 63 w 3930
better 1 w 3936
grasp 1 w 3941
my 13 w 3943
meaning 1 w 3950
Suppose 1 w 3958
I 34 w 3959
were 3 w 3963
to 53 w 3965
ask 4 w 3968
you 27 w 3971
Well 1 w 3976
now 6 w 3979
a 299 w 3981
brother 1 w 3988
viewed 1 w 3995
in 58 w 3997
the 65 w 4000
abstract 1 w 4008
is 38 w 4011
he 92 w 4013
brother 2 w 4020
of 37 w 4022
somebody 2 w 4030
or 37 w 4032
not 17 w 4035
He 3 w 4038
is 39 w 4040
said 6 w 4045
Agathon 8 w 4052
That 1 w 4057
is 40 w 4059
of 38 w 4062
brother 3 w 4069
or 38 w 4071
of 39 w 4073
sister 1 w 4079
He 4 w 4082
agreed 3 w 4088
Now 1 w 4092
try 1 w 4095
and 19 w 4098
tell 2 w 4102
me 30 w 4104
about 4 w 4109
Love 9 w 4113
is 42 w 4116
he 95 w 4118
a 308 w 4119
love 5 w 4123
of 40 w 4125
nothing 1 w 4132
or 39 w 4134
of 41 w 4136
something 1 w 4145
Of 1 w 4148
something 2 w 4157
to 54 w 4160
be 23 w 4162
sure 2 w 4166
