SO.What shall we do with all these people, my friend? For, advancing little by little, we have unwittingly fallen between the two parties, and,
181
181a
unless we protect ourselves and escape somehow, we shall pay the penalty, like those in the palaestra, who in playing on the line are caught by both sides and dragged in opposite directions. [*] I think, then, we had better examine first the one party, those whom we originally set out to join, the flowing ones, and if we find their arguments sound, we will help them to pull us over, trying thus to escape the others; but if we find that the partisans of the whole seem to have truer doctrines, we will take refuge with them from those who would move what is motionless.
181b
But if we find that neither party has anything reasonable to say, we shall be ridiculous if we think that we, who are of no account, can say anything worth while after having rejected the doctrines of very ancient and very wise men. Therefore, Theodorus, see whether it is desirable to go forward into so great a danger.

THEO. Oh, it would be unendurable, Socrates, not to examine thoroughly the doctrines of both parties.

SOC. Then they must be examined, since you are so urgent. Now I think the starting-point of our examination of the doctrine of motion is this:
181c
Exactly what do they mean, after all, when they say that all things are in motion? What I wish to ask is this: Do they mean to say that there is only one kind of motion or, as I believe, two? But it must not be my belief alone; you must share it also, that if anything happens to us we may suffer it in common. Tell me, do you call it motion when a thing changes its place or turns round in the same place?

THEO. Yes.

SOC. Let this, then, be one kind of motion. Now when a thing
181d
remains in the same place, but grows old, or becomes black instead of white, or hard instead of soft, or undergoes any other kind of alteration, is it not proper to say that this is another kind of motion?

THEO. I think so.

SOC. Nay, it must be true. So I say that there are these two kinds of motion: alteration, and motion in space.

THEO. And you are right.

SOC. Now that we have made this distinction, let us at once converse with those who say that all things are in motion, and let us ask them, Do you mean that everything moves in both ways,
181e
moving in space and undergoing alteration, or one thing in both ways and another in one of the two ways only?

THEO. By Zeus, I cannot tell! But I think they would say that everything moves in both ways.

SOC. Yes; otherwise, my friend, they will find that things in motion are also things at rest, and it will be no more correct to say that all things are in motion than that all things are at rest.

THEO. What you say is very true.

somehow 1 w 160
we 5 w 163

ix 1 w 327

the 7 w 335

were 1 w 346

into 1 w 357
two 2 w 360

first 1 w 470
the 10 w 473

party 1 w 481
those 2 w 487
whom 1 w 491
we 8 w 493

out 1 w 509
to 4 w 511
join 1 w 515
the 11 w 519
flowing 1 w 526
ones 1 w 530
and 4 w 534
if 1 w 536
we 9 w 538
find 1 w 542
their 1 w 547
arguments 1 w 556
sound 1 w 561
we 10 w 564
will 1 w 568
help 1 w 572
them 1 w 576
to 5 w 578
pull 1 w 582
us 1 w 584
over 2 w 588
trying 1 w 595
thus 1 w 599
to 6 w 601
escape 2 w 607
the 14 w 610
others 1 w 616
but 1 w 620
if 2 w 622
we 11 w 624
find 2 w 628
that 1 w 632
the 16 w 635
partisans 1 w 644
of 2 w 646
the 17 w 649
whole 1 w 654
seem 1 w 658
to 7 w 660
have 2 w 664
truer 1 w 669
doctrines 1 w 678
we 12 w 681
will 2 w 685
take 1 w 689
refuge 1 w 695
with 2 w 699
them 2 w 703
from 1 w 707
those 3 w 712
who 4 w 715
would 1 w 720
move 1 w 724
what 1 w 728
is 2 w 730
motionless 1 w 740
But 1 w 744
if 3 w 746
we 13 w 748
find 3 w 752
that 2 w 756
neither 1 w 763
party 2 w 768
has 1 w 771
anything 1 w 779
reasonable 1 w 789
to 8 w 791
say 1 w 794
we 14 w 797
shall 3 w 802
be 3 w 804
ridiculous 1 w 814
if 4 w 816
we 15 w 818
think 2 w 823
that 3 w 827
we 16 w 829
who 5 w 833
are 2 w 836
of 3 w 838
no 1 w 840
account 1 w 847
can 1 w 851
say 2 w 854
anything 2 w 862
worth 1 w 867
while 1 w 872
after 1 w 877
having 1 w 883
rejected 1 w 891
the 20 w 894
doctrines 2 w 903
of 4 w 905
very 1 w 909
ancient 1 w 916
and 5 w 919
very 2 w 923
wise 1 w 927
men 2 w 930
Therefore 1 w 940
Theodorus 1 w 950
see 2 w 954
whether 1 w 961
it 9 w 963
is 4 w 965
desirable 1 w 974
to 9 w 976
go 1 w 978
forward 1 w 985
into 2 w 989
so 4 w 991
great 1 w 996
a 69 w 997
danger 1 w 1003
THEO 1 w 1008
Oh 1 w 1011
it 10 w 1014
would 2 w 1019
be 4 w 1021
unendurable 1 w 1032
Socrates 1 w 1041
not 1 w 1045
to 11 w 1047
examine 2 w 1054
thoroughly 1 w 1064
the 22 w 1067
doctrines 3 w 1076
of 5 w 1078
both 2 w 1082
parties 3 w 1089
SOC 1 w 1093
Then 1 w 1098
they 1 w 1102
must 1 w 1106
be 5 w 1108
examined 1 w 1116
since 1 w 1122
you 1 w 1125
are 3 w 1128
so 5 w 1130
urgent 1 w 1136
Now 1 w 1140
I 3 w 1141
think 3 w 1146
the 24 w 1149
starting-point 1 w 1163
of 6 w 1165
our 2 w 1168
examination 1 w 1179
of 7 w 1181
the 25 w 1184
doctrine 4 w 1192
of 8 w 1194
motion 2 w 1200
is 5 w 1202
this 1 w 1206
Exactly 1 w 1214
what 2 w 1218
do 7 w 1220
they 2 w 1224
mean 1 w 1228
after 2 w 1234
all 8 w 1237
when 1 w 1242
they 3 w 1246
say 3 w 1249
that 4 w 1253
all 9 w 1256
things 1 w 1262
are 4 w 1265
in 36 w 1267
motion 3 w 1273
What 2 w 1278
I 4 w 1279
wish 1 w 1283
to 12 w 1285
ask 1 w 1288
is 8 w 1290
this 2 w 1294
Do 1 w 1297
they 4 w 1301
mean 2 w 1305
to 13 w 1307
say 4 w 1310
that 5 w 1314
there 1 w 1319
is 10 w 1321
only 1 w 1325
one 4 w 1328
kind 1 w 1332
of 9 w 1334
motion 4 w 1340
or 8 w 1342
as 4 w 1345
I 5 w 1346
believe 1 w 1353
two 3 w 1357
But 2 w 1361
it 11 w 1363
must 2 w 1367
not 2 w 1370
be 7 w 1372
my 2 w 1374
belief 1 w 1380
alone 1 w 1385
you 2 w 1389
must 3 w 1393
share 1 w 1398
it 12 w 1400
also 1 w 1404
that 6 w 1409
if 5 w 1411
anything 3 w 1419
happens 1 w 1426
to 14 w 1428
us 8 w 1430
we 17 w 1432
may 1 w 1435
suffer 1 w 1441
it 13 w 1443
in 39 w 1445
common 1 w 1451
Tell 1 w 1456
me 7 w 1458
do 8 w 1461
you 3 w 1464
call 2 w 1468
it 14 w 1470
motion 5 w 1476
when 2 w 1480
a 103 w 1481
thing 5 w 1486
changes 1 w 1493
its 2 w 1496

or 9 w 1503
turns 1 w 1508
round 1 w 1513
in 41 w 1515
the 30 w 1518
same 1 w 1522
place 2 w 1527
THEO 2 w 1532
Yes 1 w 1536
SOC 2 w 1540
Let 1 w 1544
this 3 w 1548
then 2 w 1553
be 9 w 1556
one 6 w 1559
kind 2 w 1563
of 10 w 1565
motion 6 w 1571
Now 2 w 1575
when 3 w 1579
a 108 w 1580

remains 1 w 1592
in 45 w 1594
the 32 w 1597

of 14 w 1693

say 5 w 1722
that 7 w 1726
this 4 w 1730

say 6 w 1793
that 8 w 1797
