SOC. For they have been deprived of growth and straightforwardness and independence by the slavery they have endured from their youth up, for this forces them to do crooked acts by putting a great burden of fears and dangers upon their souls while these are still tender; and since they cannot bear this burden with uprightness and truth, they turn forthwith to deceit and to requiting wrong with wrong, so that they become greatly bent and stunted.
173b
Consequently they pass from youth to manhood with no soundness of mind in them, but they think they have become clever and wise. So much for them, Theodorus. Shall we describe those who belong to our band, or shall we let that go and return to the argument, in order to avoid abuse of that freedom and variety of discourse, of which we were speaking just now?

THEO. By all means, Socrates, describe them;
173c
for I like your saying that we who belong to this band are not the servants of our arguments, but the arguments are, as it were, our servants, and each of them must await our pleasure to be finished; for we have neither judge, nor, as the poets have, any spectator set over us to censure and rule us.

SOC. Very well, that is quite appropriate, since it is your wish; and let us speak of the leaders; for why should anyone talk about the inferior philosophers? The leaders, in the first place, from their youth up, remain ignorant of the way to the agora,
173d
do not even know where the court-room is, or the senate-house, or any other public place of assembly; as for laws and decrees, they neither hear the debates upon them nor see them when they are published; and the strivings of political clubs after public offices, and meetings, and banquets, and revellings with chorus girlsit never occurs to them even in their dreams to indulge in such things. And whether anyone in the city is of high or low birth, or what evil has been inherited by anyone from his ancestors, male or female, are matters to which they pay no more attention than to the number of pints in the sea, as the saying is.
173e
And all these things the philosopher does not even know that he does not know; for he does not keep aloof from them for the sake of gaining reputation, but really it is only his body that has its place and home in the city; his mind, considering all these things petty and of no account, disdains them and is borne in all directions, as Pindar [*] says, both below the earth, and measuring the surface of the earth, and above the sky, studying the stars, and investigating the universal nature

of every thing that is, each in its entirety, never lowering itself to anything close at hand.

SOC 1 w 3
For 1 w 7
they 1 w 11
have 1 w 15
been 1 w 19
deprived 1 w 27
of 1 w 29
growth 1 w 35
and 1 w 38
straightforwardness 1 w 57
and 2 w 60
independence 1 w 72
by 1 w 74
the 2 w 77
slavery 1 w 84
they 2 w 88
have 2 w 92
endured 1 w 99
from 1 w 103
their 1 w 108
youth 1 w 113
up 1 w 115
for 2 w 119
this 1 w 123
forces 1 w 129
them 1 w 133
to 1 w 135
do 1 w 137
crooked 1 w 144
acts 1 w 148
by 2 w 150
putting 1 w 157
a 9 w 158
great 1 w 163
burden 1 w 169
of 2 w 171
fears 1 w 176
and 3 w 179
dangers 1 w 186
upon 1 w 190
their 2 w 195
souls 1 w 200
while 1 w 205
these 1 w 210
are 1 w 213
still 1 w 218
tender 1 w 224
and 4 w 228
since 1 w 233
they 3 w 237
cannot 1 w 243
bear 1 w 247
this 2 w 251
burden 2 w 257
with 1 w 261
uprightness 1 w 272
and 5 w 275
truth 1 w 280
they 4 w 285
turn 1 w 289
forthwith 1 w 298
to 2 w 300
deceit 1 w 306
and 6 w 309
to 3 w 311
requiting 1 w 320
wrong 1 w 325
with 3 w 329
wrong 2 w 334
so 2 w 337
that 1 w 341
they 5 w 345
become 1 w 351
greatly 1 w 358
bent 1 w 362
and 7 w 365
stunted 1 w 372
Consequently 1 w 385
they 6 w 389
pass 1 w 393
from 2 w 397
youth 2 w 402
to 4 w 404
manhood 1 w 411
with 4 w 415
no 2 w 417

them 2 w 438
but 1 w 442
they 7 w 446

they 8 w 455
have 3 w 459
become 2 w 465
clever 1 w 471
and 8 w 474
wise 1 w 478
So 1 w 481
much 1 w 485
for 5 w 488
them 3 w 492
Theodorus 1 w 502
Shall 1 w 508
we 1 w 510
describe 1 w 518
those 1 w 523
who 1 w 526
belong 1 w 532
to 5 w 534
our 1 w 537
band 1 w 541
or 8 w 544
shall 1 w 549
we 2 w 551
let 1 w 554
that 2 w 558
go 1 w 560
and 10 w 563
return 1 w 569
to 6 w 571
the 16 w 574
argument 1 w 582
in 8 w 585
order 1 w 590
to 7 w 592

abuse 1 w 602
of 4 w 604
that 3 w 608
freedom 1 w 615
and 11 w 618

of 5 w 627

of 6 w 639
which 1 w 644
we 3 w 646
were 1 w 650
speaking 1 w 658
just 1 w 662
now 1 w 665
