Socrates. No, nor can it be known by anyone.
440
440a
For at the moment when he who seeks to know it approaches, it becomes something else and different, so that its nature and state can no longer be known; and surely there is no knowledge which knows that which is in no state.

Cratylus. It is as you say.

Socrates. But we cannot even say that there is any knowledge, if all things are changing and nothing remains fixed; for if knowledge itself does not change and cease to be knowledge, then knowledge would remain, and there would be knowledge; but if the very essence of knowledge changes,
440b
at the moment of the change to another essence of knowledge there would be no knowledge, and if it is always changing, there will always be no knowledge, and by this reasoning there will be neither anyone to know nor anything to be known. But if there is always that which knows and that which is knownif the beautiful, the good, and all the other verities existI do not see how there is any likeness between these conditions of which I am now speaking and flux or motion.
440c
Now whether this is the nature of things, or the doctrine of Heracleitus and many others is true, is another question; but surely no man of sense can put himself and his soul under the control of names, and trust in names and their makers to the point of affirming that he knows anything; nor will he condemn himself and all things and say that there is no health in them, but that all things are flowing like leaky pots,
440d
or believe that all things are just like people afflicted with catarrh, flowing and running all the time. Perhaps, Cratylus, this theory is true, but perhaps it is not. Therefore you must consider courageously and thoroughly and not accept anything carelesslyfor you are still young and in your prime; then, if after investigation you find the truth, impart it to me.

Cratylus. I will do so. However, I assure you, Socrates, that I have already considered the matter, and after toilsome consideration
440e
I think the doctrine of Heracleitus is much more likely to be true.

Socrates. Some other time, then, my friend, you will teach me, when you come back; but now go into the country as you have made ready to do; and Hermogenes here will go with you a bit.

Cratylus. Very well, Socrates, and I hope you also will continue to think of these matters.

Socrates 1 w 8
No 1 w 11
nor 1 w 15
can 1 w 18
it 1 w 20
be 1 w 22
known 1 w 27
by 1 w 29
anyone 1 w 35
For 1 w 39
at 2 w 41
the 1 w 44
moment 1 w 50
when 1 w 54
he 3 w 56
who 1 w 59
seeks 1 w 64
to 1 w 66
know 2 w 70
it 2 w 72
approaches 1 w 82
it 3 w 85
becomes 1 w 92
something 1 w 101
else 1 w 105
and 1 w 108
different 1 w 117
so 2 w 120
that 1 w 124
its 1 w 127
nature 1 w 133
and 2 w 136
state 1 w 141
can 2 w 144
no 4 w 146
longer 1 w 152
be 3 w 154
known 2 w 159
and 3 w 163
surely 1 w 169
there 1 w 174
is 1 w 176
no 6 w 178
knowledge 1 w 187
which 1 w 192
knows 1 w 197
that 2 w 201
which 2 w 206
is 2 w 208
in 2 w 210
no 9 w 212
state 2 w 217
Cratylus 1 w 226
It 1 w 229
is 3 w 231
as 1 w 233
you 1 w 236
say 1 w 239
Socrates 2 w 248
But 1 w 252
we 1 w 254
cannot 1 w 260
even 1 w 264
say 2 w 267
that 3 w 271
there 2 w 276
is 4 w 278
any 2 w 281
knowledge 2 w 290
if 2 w 293
all 1 w 296
things 1 w 302
are 1 w 305
changing 1 w 313
and 4 w 316
nothing 1 w 323
remains 1 w 330
fixed 1 w 335
for 1 w 339
if 3 w 341
knowledge 3 w 350
itself 1 w 356
does 1 w 360
not 3 w 363
change 1 w 369
and 5 w 372
cease 1 w 377
to 2 w 379
be 4 w 381
knowledge 4 w 390
then 1 w 395
knowledge 5 w 404
would 1 w 409
remain 2 w 415
and 6 w 419
there 3 w 424
would 2 w 429
be 5 w 431
knowledge 6 w 440
but 1 w 444
if 4 w 446
the 6 w 449
very 1 w 453
essence 1 w 460
of 1 w 462
knowledge 7 w 471
changes 1 w 478
at 11 w 481
the 7 w 484
moment 2 w 490
of 2 w 492
the 8 w 495
change 3 w 501
to 3 w 503
another 1 w 510
essence 2 w 517
of 3 w 519
knowledge 8 w 528
there 4 w 533
would 3 w 538
be 6 w 540
no 21 w 542
knowledge 9 w 551
and 7 w 555
if 5 w 557
it 6 w 559
is 5 w 561
always 1 w 567
changing 2 w 575
there 5 w 581
will 1 w 585
always 2 w 591
be 7 w 593
no 23 w 595
knowledge 10 w 604
and 8 w 608
by 2 w 610
this 1 w 614
reasoning 1 w 623
there 6 w 628
will 2 w 632
be 8 w 634
neither 1 w 641
anyone 2 w 647
to 4 w 649
know 15 w 653
nor 2 w 656
anything 1 w 664
to 5 w 666
be 9 w 668
known 3 w 673
But 2 w 677
if 6 w 679
there 7 w 684
is 7 w 686
always 3 w 692
that 4 w 696
which 3 w 701
knows 2 w 706
and 9 w 709
that 5 w 713
which 4 w 718
is 8 w 720
known 4 w 725
if 7 w 728
the 15 w 731
beautiful 1 w 740
the 16 w 744
good 1 w 748
and 10 w 752
all 2 w 755
the 17 w 758
other 2 w 763
verities 1 w 771
exist 1 w 776
I 2 w 778
do 2 w 780
not 5 w 783
see 2 w 786
how 1 w 789
there 8 w 794
is 10 w 796
any 5 w 799
likeness 1 w 807
between 1 w 814
these 1 w 819
conditions 1 w 829
of 4 w 831
which 5 w 836
I 3 w 837
am 1 w 839
now 19 w 842
speaking 1 w 850
and 11 w 853
flux 1 w 857
or 5 w 859
motion 1 w 865
Now 1 w 869
whether 1 w 876
this 2 w 880
is 12 w 882
the 22 w 885
nature 2 w 891
of 5 w 893
things 2 w 899
or 6 w 902
the 23 w 905
doctrine 1 w 913
of 6 w 915
Heracleitus 1 w 926
and 12 w 929
many 1 w 933
others 1 w 939
is 13 w 941
true 1 w 945
is 14 w 948
another 2 w 955
question 1 w 963
but 2 w 967
surely 2 w 973
no 33 w 975
man 2 w 978
of 7 w 980
sense 1 w 985
can 4 w 988
put 1 w 991
himself 1 w 998
and 13 w 1001
his 3 w 1004
soul 1 w 1008
under 1 w 1013
the 26 w 1016
control 1 w 1023
of 8 w 1025
names 1 w 1030
and 14 w 1034
trust 1 w 1039
in 14 w 1041
names 2 w 1046
and 15 w 1049
their 1 w 1054
makers 1 w 1060
to 6 w 1062
the 28 w 1065
point 1 w 1070
of 9 w 1072
affirming 1 w 1081
that 6 w 1085
he 33 w 1087
knows 3 w 1092
anything 2 w 1100
nor 3 w 1104
will 3 w 1108
he 34 w 1110
condemn 1 w 1117
himself 2 w 1124
and 16 w 1127
all 3 w 1130
things 3 w 1136
and 17 w 1139
say 3 w 1142
that 7 w 1146
there 9 w 1151
is 16 w 1153
no 36 w 1155
health 1 w 1161
in 19 w 1163
them 1 w 1167
but 3 w 1171
that 8 w 1175
all 4 w 1178
things 4 w 1184
are 2 w 1187
flowing 1 w 1194
like 2 w 1198
leaky 1 w 1203
pots 1 w 1207
or 8 w 1210
believe 1 w 1217
that 9 w 1221
all 5 w 1224
things 5 w 1230
are 3 w 1233
just 1 w 1237
like 3 w 1241
people 1 w 1247
afflicted 1 w 1256
with 1 w 1260
catarrh 1 w 1267
flowing 2 w 1275
and 18 w 1278
running 1 w 1285
all 6 w 1288
the 31 w 1291
time 1 w 1295
Perhaps 1 w 1303
Cratylus 2 w 1312
this 3 w 1317
theory 1 w 1323
is 18 w 1325
true 2 w 1329
but 4 w 1333
perhaps 1 w 1340
it 12 w 1342
is 19 w 1344
not 7 w 1347
Therefore 1 w 1357
you 2 w 1360
must 1 w 1364
consider 1 w 1372
courageously 1 w 1384
and 19 w 1387
thoroughly 1 w 1397
and 20 w 1400
not 8 w 1403
accept 1 w 1409
anything 3 w 1417
carelessly 1 w 1427
for 3 w 1431
you 3 w 1434
are 5 w 1437
still 1 w 1442
young 1 w 1447
and 21 w 1450
in 26 w 1452
your 1 w 1456
prime 1 w 1461
then 2 w 1466
if 9 w 1469
after 1 w 1474
investigation 1 w 1487
you 6 w 1490
find 1 w 1494
the 34 w 1497
truth 1 w 1502
impart 1 w 1509
it 13 w 1511
to 7 w 1513
me 9 w 1515
Cratylus 3 w 1524
I 4 w 1526
will 4 w 1530
do 4 w 1532
so 5 w 1534
However 1 w 1542
I 5 w 1544
assure 1 w 1550
you 7 w 1553
Socrates 3 w 1562
that 10 w 1567
I 6 w 1568
have 1 w 1572
already 1 w 1579
considered 1 w 1589
the 35 w 1592
matter 1 w 1598
and 22 w 1602
after 2 w 1607
toilsome 1 w 1615
consideration 1 w 1628
I 7 w 1629
think 1 w 1634
the 36 w 1637
doctrine 2 w 1645
of 10 w 1647
Heracleitus 2 w 1658
is 20 w 1660
much 1 w 1664
more 1 w 1668
likely 1 w 1674
to 9 w 1676
be 13 w 1678
true 3 w 1682
Socrates 4 w 1691
Some 1 w 1696
other 5 w 1701
time 2 w 1705
then 3 w 1710
my 1 w 1713
friend 1 w 1719
you 8 w 1723
will 5 w 1727
teach 1 w 1732
me 13 w 1734
when 2 w 1739
you 9 w 1742
come 2 w 1746
back 1 w 1750
but 5 w 1754
now 21 w 1757
go 2 w 1759
into 1 w 1763
the 39 w 1766
country 1 w 1773
as 5 w 1775
you 10 w 1778
have 2 w 1782
made 1 w 1786
ready 2 w 1791
to 11 w 1793
do 6 w 1795
and 23 w 1799
Hermogenes 1 w 1809
here 11 w 1813
will 6 w 1817
go 3 w 1819
with 2 w 1823
you 11 w 1826
a 128 w 1827
bit 1 w 1830
Cratylus 4 w 1839
Very 1 w 1844
well 1 w 1848
Socrates 5 w 1857
and 24 w 1861
I 8 w 1862
hope 1 w 1866
you 12 w 1869
also 1 w 1873
will 7 w 1877
continue 1 w 1885
to 12 w 1887
think 2 w 1892
of 11 w 1894
these 2 w 1899
matters 1 w 1906
