Cratylus. Yes, I remember.

Socrates. Very well, then. So long as this intrinsic quality is present, even though the name have not all the proper letters, the thing will still be named; well, when it has all the proper letters; badly, when it has only a few of them. Let us, then, grant this, my friend, or we shall get into trouble, like the belated night wanderers in the road at Aegina,[*] and in very truth we shall be found to have arrived too late;
433b
otherwise you must look for some other principle of correctness in names, and must not admit that a name is the representation of a thing in syllables and letters. For if you maintain both positions, you cannot help contradicting yourself.

Cratylus. Well, Socrates, I think what you say is reasonable, and I accept it.

Socrates. Then since we are agreed about this, let us consider the next point. If a name, we say, is to be a good one, it must have the proper letters?

Cratylus. Yes.
433c

Socrates. And the proper letters are those which are like the things named?

Cratylus. Yes, certainly.

Socrates. That is, then, the method by which wellgiven names are given. But if any name is not well given, the greater part of it may perhaps, if it is to be an image at all, be made up of proper and like letters, but it may contain some inappropriate element, and is on that account not good or well made. Is that our view?

Cratylus. I suppose, Socrates, there is no use in keeping up my contention; but I am not satisfied that it can be a name and not be well given.

Socrates. Are you not satisfied that the name is
433d
the representation of a thing?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. And do you not think it is true that some names are composed of earlier ones and others are primary?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. But if the primary names are to be representations of any things, can you suggest any better way of making them representations than by making them as much as possible like the things which they are to represent?
433e
Or do you prefer the theory advanced by Hermogenes and many others, who claim that names are conventional and represent things to those who established the convention and knew the things beforehand, and that convention is the sole principle of correctness in names, and it makes no difference whether we accept the existing convention or adopt an opposite one according to which small would be called great and great small? Which of these two theories do you prefer?

Yes 1 w 12
I 1 w 14
remember 1 w 22
Socrates 1 w 31
Very 1 w 36
well 1 w 40
then 1 w 45
So 2 w 48
long 1 w 52
as 1 w 54
this 1 w 58
intrinsic 1 w 67
quality 1 w 74
is 2 w 76
present 1 w 83
even 1 w 88
though 1 w 94
the 2 w 97
name 1 w 101
have 1 w 105
not 1 w 108
all 1 w 111
the 3 w 114
proper 1 w 120
letters 1 w 127
the 4 w 131
thing 1 w 136
will 1 w 140
still 1 w 145
be 2 w 147
named 1 w 152
well 2 w 157
when 1 w 162
it 2 w 164
has 1 w 167
all 2 w 170
the 5 w 173
proper 2 w 179
letters 2 w 186
badly 1 w 192
when 2 w 197
it 3 w 199
has 2 w 202
only 1 w 206
a 13 w 207
few 1 w 210
of 1 w 212
them 1 w 216
Let 1 w 220
us 2 w 222
then 2 w 227
grant 1 w 233
this 2 w 237
my 1 w 240
friend 1 w 246
or 1 w 249
we 3 w 251
shall 1 w 256
get 1 w 259
into 1 w 263
trouble 1 w 270
like 1 w 275
the 8 w 278
belated 1 w 285
night 1 w 290
wanderers 1 w 299
in 5 w 301
the 9 w 304
road 1 w 308
at 4 w 310
Aegina 1 w 316
This 1 w 321
seems 1 w 326
to 2 w 328
refer 1 w 333
to 3 w 335
some 1 w 339
story 1 w 344
unknown 1 w 351
to 5 w 353
us 3 w 355
and 2 w 359
in 7 w 361
very 1 w 365
truth 1 w 370
we 4 w 372
shall 2 w 377
be 4 w 379
found 1 w 384
to 6 w 386
have 2 w 390
arrived 1 w 397
too 1 w 400
late 2 w 404
otherwise 1 w 414
you 1 w 417
must 1 w 421
look 1 w 425
for 1 w 428
some 2 w 432
other 2 w 437
principle 1 w 446
of 2 w 448
correctness 1 w 459
in 9 w 461
names 1 w 466
and 3 w 470
must 2 w 474
not 2 w 477
admit 1 w 482
that 1 w 486
a 30 w 487
name 4 w 491
is 6 w 493
the 12 w 496
representation 1 w 510
of 3 w 512
a 33 w 513
thing 2 w 518
in 11 w 520
syllables 1 w 529
and 4 w 532
letters 3 w 539
For 1 w 543
if 1 w 545
you 2 w 548
maintain 1 w 556
both 1 w 560
positions 1 w 569
you 3 w 573
cannot 1 w 579
help 1 w 583
contradicting 1 w 596
yourself 1 w 604
Cratylus 2 w 613
Well 1 w 618
Socrates 2 w 627
I 2 w 629
think 1 w 634
what 1 w 638
you 5 w 641
say 1 w 644
is 7 w 646
reasonable 1 w 656
and 5 w 660
I 3 w 661
accept 1 w 667
it 6 w 669
Socrates 3 w 678
Then 1 w 683
since 1 w 688
we 5 w 690
are 1 w 693
agreed 1 w 699
about 1 w 704
this 3 w 708
let 4 w 712
us 7 w 714
consider 1 w 722
the 13 w 725
next 1 w 729
point 1 w 734
If 1 w 737
a 52 w 738
name 5 w 742
we 6 w 745
say 2 w 748
is 9 w 751
to 8 w 753
be 5 w 755
a 55 w 756
good 1 w 760
one 1 w 763
it 7 w 766
must 3 w 770
have 3 w 774
the 14 w 777
proper 3 w 783
letters 4 w 790
Cratylus 3 w 799
Yes 2 w 803
Socrates 4 w 812
And 1 w 816
the 15 w 819
proper 4 w 825
letters 5 w 832
are 2 w 835
those 1 w 840
which 1 w 845
are 3 w 848
like 2 w 852
the 16 w 855
things 1 w 861
named 2 w 866
Cratylus 4 w 875
Yes 3 w 879
certainly 1 w 889
Socrates 5 w 898
That 1 w 903
is 10 w 905
then 3 w 910
the 18 w 914
method 1 w 920
by 1 w 922
which 2 w 927
wellgiven 1 w 936
names 2 w 941
are 4 w 944
given 2 w 949
But 1 w 953
if 2 w 955
any 1 w 958
name 8 w 962
is 11 w 964
not 4 w 967
well 4 w 971
given 3 w 976
the 19 w 980
greater 1 w 987
part 1 w 991
of 4 w 993
it 8 w 995
may 1 w 998
perhaps 1 w 1005
if 3 w 1008
it 9 w 1010
is 12 w 1012
to 9 w 1014
be 6 w 1016
an 9 w 1018
image 1 w 1023
at 18 w 1025
all 5 w 1028
be 7 w 1031
made 1 w 1035
up 1 w 1037
of 5 w 1039
proper 5 w 1045
and 6 w 1048
like 3 w 1052
letters 6 w 1059
but 1 w 1063
it 10 w 1065
may 2 w 1068
contain 1 w 1075
some 3 w 1079
inappropriate 1 w 1092
element 1 w 1099
and 7 w 1103
is 13 w 1105
on 10 w 1107
that 2 w 1111
account 1 w 1118
not 5 w 1121
good 2 w 1125
or 6 w 1127
well 5 w 1131
made 2 w 1135
Is 1 w 1138
that 3 w 1142
our 2 w 1145
view 1 w 1149
Cratylus 5 w 1158
I 6 w 1160
suppose 1 w 1167
Socrates 6 w 1176
there 1 w 1182
is 14 w 1184
no 7 w 1186
use 1 w 1189
in 22 w 1191
keeping 1 w 1198
up 3 w 1200
my 2 w 1202
contention 1 w 1212
but 2 w 1216
I 7 w 1217
am 9 w 1219
not 6 w 1222
satisfied 1 w 1231
that 4 w 1235
it 11 w 1237
can 2 w 1240
be 8 w 1242
a 95 w 1243
name 9 w 1247
and 8 w 1250
not 7 w 1253
be 9 w 1255
well 6 w 1259
given 4 w 1264
Socrates 7 w 1273
Are 1 w 1277
you 6 w 1280
not 8 w 1283
satisfied 2 w 1292
that 5 w 1296
the 21 w 1299
name 10 w 1303
is 17 w 1305
the 22 w 1308
representation 2 w 1322
of 6 w 1324
a 103 w 1325
thing 4 w 1330
Cratylus 6 w 1339
Yes 4 w 1343
Socrates 8 w 1352
And 2 w 1356
do 1 w 1358
you 7 w 1361
not 9 w 1364
think 2 w 1369
it 12 w 1371
is 18 w 1373
true 1 w 1377
that 6 w 1381
some 4 w 1385
names 3 w 1390
are 5 w 1393
composed 1 w 1401
of 7 w 1403
earlier 1 w 1410
ones 1 w 1414
and 9 w 1417
others 1 w 1423
are 6 w 1426
primary 1 w 1433
Cratylus 7 w 1442
Yes 5 w 1446
Socrates 9 w 1455
But 2 w 1459
if 4 w 1461
the 24 w 1464
primary 2 w 1471
names 4 w 1476
are 7 w 1479
to 10 w 1481
be 10 w 1483
representations 1 w 1498
of 8 w 1500
any 2 w 1503
things 2 w 1509
can 3 w 1513
you 8 w 1516
suggest 1 w 1523
any 3 w 1526
better 1 w 1532
way 1 w 1535
of 9 w 1537
making 1 w 1543
them 2 w 1547
representations 2 w 1562
than 1 w 1566
by 2 w 1568
making 2 w 1574
them 3 w 1578
as 5 w 1580
much 1 w 1584
as 6 w 1586
possible 1 w 1594
like 4 w 1598
the 27 w 1601
things 3 w 1607
which 3 w 1612
they 1 w 1616
are 8 w 1619
to 11 w 1621
represent 5 w 1630
Or 1 w 1633
do 2 w 1635
you 9 w 1638
prefer 1 w 1644
the 29 w 1647
theory 1 w 1653
advanced 1 w 1661
by 3 w 1663
Hermogenes 1 w 1673
and 10 w 1676
many 1 w 1680
others 2 w 1686
who 1 w 1690
claim 1 w 1695
that 7 w 1699
names 5 w 1704
are 9 w 1707
conventional 1 w 1719
and 11 w 1722
represent 6 w 1731
things 4 w 1737
to 12 w 1739
those 2 w 1744
who 2 w 1747
established 1 w 1758
the 32 w 1761
convention 2 w 1771
and 12 w 1774
knew 1 w 1778
the 33 w 1781
things 5 w 1787
beforehand 1 w 1797
and 14 w 1801
that 8 w 1805
convention 3 w 1815
is 20 w 1817
the 34 w 1820
sole 1 w 1824
principle 2 w 1833
of 10 w 1835
correctness 2 w 1846
in 33 w 1848
names 6 w 1853
and 15 w 1857
it 13 w 1859
makes 1 w 1864
no 12 w 1866
difference 1 w 1876
whether 1 w 1883
we 11 w 1885
accept 2 w 1891
the 36 w 1894
existing 1 w 1902
convention 4 w 1912
or 10 w 1914
adopt 1 w 1919
an 27 w 1921
opposite 1 w 1929
one 3 w 1932
according 1 w 1941
to 13 w 1943
which 4 w 1948
small 1 w 1953
would 1 w 1958
be 13 w 1960
called 1 w 1966
great 2 w 1971
and 16 w 1974
great 3 w 1979
small 2 w 1984
Which 1 w 1990
of 11 w 1992
these 1 w 1997
two 1 w 2000
theories 1 w 2008
do 4 w 2010
you 10 w 2013
prefer 2 w 2019
