Socrates. Well, then, can I not step up to the same man again and say, This is your name? A name is an imitation, just as a picture is.
431
431a
Very well; can I not say to him, This is your name, and then bring before his sense of hearing perhaps the imitation of himself, saying that it is a man, or perhaps the imitation of the female of the human species, saying that it is a woman? Do you not believe that this is possible and sometimes happens?

Cratylus. I am willing to concede it, Socrates, and grant that you are right.

Socrates. That is a good thing for you to do, my friend, if I am right; for now we need no longer argue about the matter.
431b
If, then, some such assignment of names takes place, we will call one kind speaking truth, and the other speaking falsehood. But if this is accepted, and if it is possible to assign names incorrectly and to give to objects not the names that befit them, but sometimes those that are unfitting, it would be possible to treat verbs in the same way. And if verbs and nouns can be assigned in this way, the same must be true of sentences; for sentences are, I conceive, a combination of verbs and nouns.
431c
What do you say to that, Cratylus?

Cratylus. I agree; I think you are right.

Socrates. If, then, we compare the earliest words to sketches, it is possible in them, as in pictures, to reproduce all the colors and shapes, or not all; some may be wanting, and some may be added, and they may be too many or too large. Is not that true?

Cratylus. Yes, it is.

Socrates. Then he who reproduces all, produces good sketches and pictures, and he who adds or takes away produces also sketches and pictures, but bad ones?
431d

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. And how about him who imitates the nature of things by means of letters and syllables? By the same principle, if he gives all that is appropriate, the imagethat is to say, the namewill be good, and if he sometimes omits a little, it will be an image, but not a good one; and therefore some names are well and others badly made. Is that not true?

Cratylus. Perhaps.
431e

Socrates. Perhaps, then, one artisan of names will be good, and another bad?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. The name of such an artisan was lawgiver?

Cratylus. Yes.

Socrates. Perhaps, then, by Zeus, as is the case in the other arts, one lawgiver may be good and another bad, if we accept our previous conclusions.

to 9 w 936
that 7 w 940
Cratylus 2 w 949

I 7 w 960

right 3 w 983
Socrates 4 w 992
If 2 w 995
then 4 w 1000
we 4 w 1003

the 17 w 1013
earliest 1 w 1021
words 1 w 1026
to 10 w 1028
sketches 1 w 1036
it 11 w 1039
is 17 w 1041
possible 4 w 1049
in 17 w 1051
them 2 w 1055
as 5 w 1058
in 18 w 1060
pictures 1 w 1068
to 11 w 1071
reproduce 1 w 1080
all 2 w 1083
the 19 w 1086
colors 1 w 1092
and 10 w 1095
shapes 1 w 1101
or 9 w 1104
not 5 w 1107
all 3 w 1110
some 4 w 1115
may 1 w 1118
be 7 w 1120
wanting 1 w 1127
and 11 w 1131
some 5 w 1135
may 2 w 1138
be 8 w 1140
added 1 w 1145
and 12 w 1149
they 1 w 1153
may 3 w 1156
be 9 w 1158
too 1 w 1161
many 1 w 1165
or 10 w 1167
too 2 w 1170
large 1 w 1175
Is 1 w 1178
not 6 w 1181
that 8 w 1185
true 2 w 1189
Cratylus 4 w 1198
Yes 1 w 1202
it 12 w 1205
is 18 w 1207
Socrates 5 w 1216
Then 1 w 1221
he 24 w 1223
who 1 w 1226
reproduces 1 w 1236
all 4 w 1239
produces 2 w 1248

who 2 w 1280
adds 1 w 1284
or 11 w 1286
takes 2 w 1291
away 1 w 1295
produces 3 w 1303
also 1 w 1307

Yes 2 w 1350
Socrates 6 w 1359
And 2 w 1363
how 1 w 1366
about 2 w 1371
him 3 w 1374
who 3 w 1377
imitates 1 w 1385
the 21 w 1388
nature 1 w 1394
of 8 w 1396

By 1 w 1433

if 6 w 1525
he 33 w 1527
sometimes 3 w 1536
