Cratylus. The lawgivers, as you said in the beginning.

Socrates. Shall we declare that this art arises in men like the other arts, or not? What I mean is this: Some painters are better, and others worse, are they not?

Cratylus. Certainly.

Socrates. And the better produce better worksthat is, their paintingsand the others worse works? And likewise some builders build better houses and others worse?

Cratylus. Yes.
429b

Socrates. Then do some lawgivers produce better, and others worse works?

Cratylus. No; at that point I cease to agree.

Socrates. Then you do not think that some laws are better, and some worse?

Cratylus. No, I do not.

Socrates. And you do not, it appears, think that one name is better, and another worse?

Cratylus. No, I do not.

Socrates. Then all names are correct?

Cratylus. All that are really names.

Socrates. How about the name of our friend Hermogenes,
429c
which was mentioned a while ago? Shall we say that it is not his name at all, unless he belongs to the race of Hermes, or that it is his name, but is incorrect?

Cratylus. I think, Socrates, that it is not his name at all; it appears to be his, but is really the name of some one else who possesses the nature that makes the name clear.

Socrates. And when anyone says that our friend is Hermogenes, is he not even speaking falsely? For perhaps it is not even possible to say that he is Hermogenes, if he is not.

Cratylus. What do you mean?

Socrates. Do you mean to say that it is impossible to speak falsehood at all?
429d
For there are, my dear Cratylus, many who do so, and who have done so in the past.

Cratylus. Why, Socrates, how could anyone who says that which he says, say that which is not? Is not falsehood saying that which is not?

Socrates. Your reasoning is too clever for me at my age, my friend. However, tell me this: Do you think it is possible to speak falsehood,
429e
but not to say it?

Cratylus. Neither to speak nor to say it.

Socrates. Nor utter it or use it as a form of address? For instance, if some one should meet you in hospitable fashion, should grasp your hand and say, Well met, my friend from Athens, son of Smicrion, Hermogenes, would he be saying or speaking or uttering or addressing these words not to you, but to Hermogenesor to nobody?

Cratylus. I think, Socrates, the man would be producing sounds without sense.

but 1 w 844
is 12 w 846
incorrect 1 w 855
Cratylus 8 w 864
I 5 w 866
think 3 w 871
Socrates 8 w 880
that 9 w 885
it 4 w 887
is 13 w 889
not 9 w 892
his 5 w 895

some 5 w 946
one 3 w 949
else 1 w 953
who 1 w 956

the 16 w 968
nature 1 w 974
that 10 w 978
makes 1 w 983
the 17 w 986
name 9 w 990
clear 1 w 995
Socrates 9 w 1004
And 4 w 1008
when 1 w 1012
anyone 1 w 1018
says 1 w 1022
that 11 w 1026
our 2 w 1029
friend 2 w 1035
is 17 w 1037
Hermogenes 2 w 1047
is 18 w 1050
he 24 w 1052
not 10 w 1055
even 1 w 1059
speaking 1 w 1067
falsely 1 w 1074
For 1 w 1078
perhaps 1 w 1085
it 6 w 1087
is 19 w 1089
not 11 w 1092
even 2 w 1096
possible 1 w 1104
to 4 w 1106
say 3 w 1109
that 12 w 1113
he 25 w 1115
is 20 w 1117
Hermogenes 3 w 1127
if 1 w 1130
he 26 w 1132
is 21 w 1134
not 12 w 1137
Cratylus 9 w 1146
What 2 w 1151
do 6 w 1153
you 4 w 1156
mean 2 w 1160
Socrates 10 w 1169
Do 1 w 1172
you 5 w 1175
mean 3 w 1179
to 5 w 1181
say 4 w 1184
that 13 w 1188
it 7 w 1190
is 22 w 1192
impossible 1 w 1202
to 6 w 1204
speak 2 w 1209
falsehood 1 w 1218
at 39 w 1220
all 8 w 1223
For 2 w 1227
there 1 w 1232
are 7 w 1235
my 1 w 1238
dear 1 w 1242
Cratylus 10 w 1250
many 1 w 1255
who 2 w 1258
do 7 w 1260
so 6 w 1262
and 7 w 1266
who 3 w 1269
have 1 w 1273
done 1 w 1277
so 7 w 1279
in 15 w 1281
the 19 w 1284
past 1 w 1288
Cratylus 11 w 1297
Why 1 w 1301
Socrates 11 w 1310
how 1 w 1314
could 1 w 1319
anyone 2 w 1325
who 4 w 1328
says 2 w 1332
that 14 w 1336
which 2 w 1341
he 29 w 1343
says 3 w 1347
say 7 w 1351
that 15 w 1355
which 3 w 1360
is 23 w 1362
not 13 w 1365
Is 1 w 1368
not 14 w 1371
falsehood 2 w 1380
saying 1 w 1386
that 16 w 1390
which 4 w 1395
is 24 w 1397
not 15 w 1400
Socrates 12 w 1409
Your 1 w 1414
reasoning 1 w 1423
is 25 w 1425
too 1 w 1428
clever 1 w 1434
for 1 w 1437
me 22 w 1439
at 47 w 1441
my 2 w 1443
age 1 w 1446
my 3 w 1449
friend 3 w 1455
However 1 w 1463
tell 1 w 1468
me 23 w 1470
this 3 w 1474
Do 2 w 1477
you 6 w 1480
think 4 w 1485
it 8 w 1487
is 27 w 1489
possible 3 w 1497
to 8 w 1499
speak 3 w 1504
falsehood 3 w 1513
but 3 w 1517
not 16 w 1520
to 9 w 1522
say 9 w 1525
it 9 w 1527
Cratylus 12 w 1536
Neither 1 w 1544
to 10 w 1546
speak 4 w 1551
nor 1 w 1554
to 11 w 1556
say 10 w 1559
it 11 w 1561
Socrates 13 w 1570
Nor 1 w 1574
utter 1 w 1579
it 12 w 1581
or 19 w 1583
use 2 w 1586
it 13 w 1588
as 6 w 1590
a 137 w 1591
form 1 w 1595
of 4 w 1597
address 1 w 1604
For 3 w 1608
instance 1 w 1616
if 2 w 1619
some 6 w 1623
one 7 w 1626
should 1 w 1632
meet 1 w 1636
you 7 w 1639
in 20 w 1641
hospitable 1 w 1651
fashion 1 w 1658
should 2 w 1665
grasp 1 w 1670
your 1 w 1674
hand 1 w 1678
and 9 w 1681
say 11 w 1684
Well 1 w 1689
met 1 w 1692
my 4 w 1695
friend 4 w 1701
from 1 w 1705
Athens 1 w 1711
son 2 w 1715
of 5 w 1717
Smicrion 1 w 1725
Hermogenes 4 w 1736
would 1 w 1742
he 32 w 1744
be 11 w 1746
saying 2 w 1752
or 22 w 1754
speaking 2 w 1762
or 23 w 1764
uttering 1 w 1772
or 24 w 1774
addressing 1 w 1784
these 1 w 1789
words 1 w 1794
not 17 w 1797
to 12 w 1799
you 9 w 1802
but 4 w 1806
to 13 w 1808
Hermogenes 5 w 1818
or 26 w 1821
to 14 w 1823
nobody 1 w 1829
Cratylus 13 w 1838
I 7 w 1840
think 5 w 1845
Socrates 14 w 1854
the 23 w 1858
man 2 w 1861
would 2 w 1866
be 12 w 1868
producing 1 w 1877
sounds 1 w 1883
without 1 w 1890
sense 1 w 1895
