Phaedo. But it is most absurd to call things of that sort causes. If anyone were to say that I could not have done what I thought proper if I had not bones and sinews and other things that I have, he would be right. But to say that those things are the cause of my doing what I do,
99b
and that I act with intelligence but not from the choice of what is best, would be an extremely careless way of talking. Whoever talks in that way is unable to make a distinction and to see that in reality a cause is one thing, and the thing without which the cause could never be a cause is quite another thing. And so it seems to me that most people, when they give the name of cause to the latter, are groping in the dark, as it were, and are giving it a name that does not belong to it. And so one man makes the earth stay below the heavens by putting a vortex about it, and another regards the earth as a flat trough supported on a foundation of air; but they do not look for
99c
the power which causes things to be now placed as it is best for them to be placed, nor do they think it has any divine force, but they think they can find a new Atlas more powerful and more immortal and more all-embracing than this, and in truth they give no thought to the good, which must embrace and hold together all things. Now I would gladly be the pupil of anyone who would teach me the nature of such a cause; but since that was denied me and I was not able to discover it myself or to learn of it from anyone else,
99d
do you wish me, Cebes, said he, to give you an account of the way in which I have conducted my second voyage in quest of the cause?
I wish it with all my heart, he replied.
After this, then, said he, since I had given up investigating realities, I decided that I must be careful not to suffer the misfortune which happens to people who look at the sun and watch it during an eclipse. For some of them ruin their eyes unless they look at its image in water
99e
or something of the sort. I thought of that danger, and I was afraid my soul would be blinded if I looked at things with my eyes and tried to grasp them with any of my senses. So I thought I must have recourse to conceptions and examine in them the truth of realities.

Phaedo. Now perhaps my metaphor
100
100a
is not quite accurate; for I do not grant in the least that he who studies realities by means of conceptions is looking at them in images any more than he who studies them in the facts of daily life. However, that is the way I began. I assume in each case some principle which I consider strongest, and whatever seems to me to agree with this, whether relating to cause or to anything else, I regard as true, and whatever disagrees with it, as untrue. But I want to tell you more clearly what I mean; for I think you do not understand now.
Not very well, certainly, said Cebes.
100b
Well, said Socrates, this is what I mean. It is nothing new, but the same thing I have always been saying, both in our previous conversation and elsewhere. I am going to try to explain to you the nature of that cause which I have been studying, and I will revert to those familiar subjects of ours as my point of departure and assume that there are such things as absolute beauty and good and greatness and the like. If you grant this and agree that these exist, I believe I shall explain cause to you and shall prove that
100c
the soul is immortal.
You may assume, said Cebes, that I grant it, and go on.
Then, said he, see if you agree with me in the next step. I think that if anything is beautiful besides absolute beauty it is beautiful for no other reason than because it partakes of absolute beauty; and this applies to everything. Do you assent to this view of cause?
I do, said he.
Now I do not yet, understand, he went on, nor can I perceive those other ingenious causes. If anyone tells me that what makes a thing beautiful is its lovely color,
100d
or its shape or anything else of the sort, I let all that go, for all those things confuse me, and I hold simply and plainly and perhaps foolishly to this, that nothing else makes it beautiful but the presence or communion (call it which you please) of absolute beauty, however it may have been gained; about the way in which it happens, I make no positive statement as yet, but I do insist that beautiful things are made beautiful by beauty. For I think this is the safest answer I can give to myself or to others, and if I cleave fast to this,
100e
I think I shall never be overthrown, and I believe it is safe for me or anyone else to give this answer, that beautiful things are beautiful through beauty. Do you agree?
I do.
And great things are great and greater things greater by greatness, and smaller things smaller by smallness?
Yes.

After 1 w 1325
this 2 w 1329
then 1 w 1334
said 2 w 1339
he 35 w 1341
since 2 w 1347
I 12 w 1348
had 2 w 1351

I 13 w 1382

that 11 w 1393
I 14 w 1394
must 2 w 1398

For 1 w 1495
some 1 w 1499
of 12 w 1501

I 16 w 1595

and 23 w 2569
good 2 w 2573
and 24 w 2576
greatness 1 w 2585
and 25 w 2588
the 47 w 2591
like 1 w 2595
If 2 w 2598
you 6 w 2601
grant 2 w 2606
this 5 w 2610
and 26 w 2613
agree 3 w 2618
that 17 w 2622
these 1 w 2627
exist 1 w 2632
I 35 w 2634
believe 1 w 2641
I 36 w 2642
shall 1 w 2647
explain 2 w 2654
cause 12 w 2659
to 29 w 2661
you 7 w 2664
and 27 w 2667
shall 2 w 2672
prove 1 w 2677
that 18 w 2681
the 49 w 2684
soul 2 w 2688
is 24 w 2690
immortal 2 w 2698
You 1 w 2702
may 1 w 2705
assume 3 w 2711
said 5 w 2716
Cebes 3 w 2721
that 19 w 2726
I 37 w 2727
grant 3 w 2732
it 28 w 2734
and 28 w 2738
go 4 w 2740
on 22 w 2742
Then 1 w 2747
said 6 w 2752
he 62 w 2754
see 4 w 2758
if 4 w 2760
you 8 w 2763
agree 4 w 2768
with 8 w 2772
me 20 w 2774
in 60 w 2776
the 50 w 2779
next 1 w 2783
step 1 w 2787
I 38 w 2789
think 4 w 2794
that 20 w 2798
if 5 w 2800
anything 2 w 2808
is 25 w 2810
beautiful 1 w 2819
besides 1 w 2826
absolute 2 w 2834
beauty 2 w 2840
it 30 w 2842
is 26 w 2844
beautiful 2 w 2853
for 7 w 2856
no 18 w 2858
other 4 w 2863
reason 1 w 2869
than 3 w 2873
because 1 w 2880
it 31 w 2882
partakes 1 w 2890
of 22 w 2892
absolute 3 w 2900
beauty 3 w 2906
and 29 w 2910
this 6 w 2914
applies 1 w 2921
to 30 w 2923
everything 1 w 2933
Do 1 w 2936
you 9 w 2939
assent 1 w 2945
to 31 w 2947
this 7 w 2951
view 1 w 2955
of 23 w 2957
cause 14 w 2962
I 39 w 2964
do 12 w 2966
said 7 w 2971
he 65 w 2973
Now 3 w 2977
I 40 w 2978
do 13 w 2980
not 14 w 2983
yet 1 w 2986
understand 2 w 2997
he 66 w 3000
went 1 w 3004
on 24 w 3006
nor 2 w 3010
can 2 w 3013
I 41 w 3014
perceive 1 w 3022
those 3 w 3027
other 5 w 3032
ingenious 1 w 3041
causes 3 w 3047
If 3 w 3050
anyone 4 w 3056
tells 1 w 3061
me 21 w 3063
that 21 w 3067
what 8 w 3071
makes 2 w 3076
a 261 w 3077
thing 17 w 3082
beautiful 3 w 3091
is 29 w 3093
its 2 w 3096
lovely 1 w 3102
color 1 w 3107
or 27 w 3110
its 3 w 3113
shape 1 w 3118
or 28 w 3120
anything 3 w 3128
else 4 w 3132
of 24 w 3134
the 53 w 3137
sort 3 w 3141
I 43 w 3143
let 1 w 3146
all 7 w 3149
that 22 w 3153
go 5 w 3155
for 8 w 3159
all 8 w 3162
those 4 w 3167
things 8 w 3173
confuse 1 w 3180
me 22 w 3182
and 31 w 3186
I 44 w 3187
hold 2 w 3191
simply 1 w 3197
and 32 w 3200
plainly 1 w 3207
and 33 w 3210
perhaps 2 w 3217
foolishly 1 w 3226
to 32 w 3228
this 8 w 3232
that 23 w 3237
nothing 2 w 3244
else 5 w 3248
makes 3 w 3253
it 34 w 3255
beautiful 4 w 3264
but 6 w 3267
the 54 w 3270
presence 1 w 3278
or 31 w 3280
communion 1 w 3289
call 2 w 3294
it 35 w 3296
which 8 w 3301
you 10 w 3304
please 1 w 3310
of 25 w 3313
absolute 4 w 3321
beauty 4 w 3327
however 1 w 3335
it 36 w 3337
may 2 w 3340
have 7 w 3344
been 3 w 3348
gained 1 w 3354
about 2 w 3360
the 55 w 3363
way 6 w 3366
in 71 w 3368
which 9 w 3373
it 37 w 3375
happens 2 w 3382
I 45 w 3384
make 5 w 3388
no 22 w 3390
positive 1 w 3398
statement 1 w 3407
as 22 w 3409
yet 2 w 3412
but 7 w 3416
I 46 w 3417
do 14 w 3419
insist 1 w 3425
that 24 w 3429
beautiful 5 w 3438
things 9 w 3444
are 7 w 3447
made 1 w 3451
beautiful 6 w 3460
by 3 w 3462
beauty 5 w 3468
For 2 w 3472
I 47 w 3473
think 5 w 3478
this 9 w 3482
is 34 w 3484
the 56 w 3487
safest 1 w 3493
answer 1 w 3499
I 48 w 3500
can 3 w 3503
give 5 w 3507
to 33 w 3509
myself 2 w 3515
or 33 w 3517
to 34 w 3519
others 1 w 3525
and 34 w 3529
if 12 w 3531
I 49 w 3532
cleave 1 w 3538
fast 1 w 3542
to 35 w 3544
this 10 w 3548
I 50 w 3550
think 6 w 3555
I 51 w 3556
shall 3 w 3561
never 2 w 3566
be 34 w 3568
overthrown 1 w 3578
and 35 w 3582
I 52 w 3583
believe 2 w 3590
it 39 w 3592
is 36 w 3594
safe 2 w 3598
for 9 w 3601
me 24 w 3603
or 35 w 3605
anyone 5 w 3611
else 6 w 3615
to 36 w 3617
give 6 w 3621
this 11 w 3625
answer 2 w 3631
that 25 w 3636
beautiful 7 w 3645
things 10 w 3651
are 8 w 3654
beautiful 8 w 3663
through 1 w 3670
beauty 6 w 3676
Do 2 w 3679
you 11 w 3682
agree 5 w 3687
I 53 w 3689
do 15 w 3691
And 3 w 3695
great 2 w 3700
things 11 w 3706
are 9 w 3709
great 3 w 3714
and 36 w 3717
greater 1 w 3724
things 12 w 3730
greater 2 w 3737
by 4 w 3739
greatness 2 w 3748
and 37 w 3752
smaller 1 w 3759
things 13 w 3765
smaller 2 w 3772
by 5 w 3774
smallness 1 w 3783
Yes 1 w 3787
