Phaedo.
Then, my good friend, it will never do for us to say that the soul is a harmony; for we should, it seems,
95
95a
agree neither with Homer, the divine poet, nor with ourselves.
That is true, said he.
Very well, said Socrates, Harmonia, the Theban goddess, has, it seems, been moderately gracious to us; but how, Cebes, and by what argument can we find grace in the sight of Cadmus?
I think, said Cebes, you will find a way. At any rate, you conducted this argument against harmony wonderfully and better than I expected. For when Simmias was telling of his difficulty, I wondered if anyone could make head against
95b
his argument; so it seemed to me very remarkable that it could not withstand the first attack of your argument. Now I should not be surprised if the argument of Cadmus met with the same fate.
My friend, said Socrates, do not be boastful, lest some evil eye put to rout the argument that is to come. That, however, is in the hands of God. Let us, in Homeric fashion, charge the foe and test the worth of what you say. Now the sum total of what you seek is this: You demand a proof that our soul is indestructible
95c
and immortal, if the philosopher, who is confident in the face of death and who thinks that after death he will fare better in the other world than if he had lived his life differently, is not to find his confidence senseless and foolish. And although we show that the soul is strong and godlike and existed before we men were born as men, all this, you say, may bear witness not to immortality, but only to the fact that the soul lasts a long while, and existed somewhere an immeasurably long time before our birth, and knew and did various things; yet it was none the more immortal for all that,
95d
but its very entrance into the human body was the beginning of its dissolution, a disease, as it were; and it lives in toil through this life and finally perishes in what we call death. Now it makes no difference, you say, whether a soul enters into a body once or many times, so far as the fear each of us feels is concerned; for anyone, unless he is a fool, must fear, if he does not know and cannot prove that the soul is immortal. That,
95e
Cebes, is, I think, about what you mean. And I restate it purposely that nothing may escape us and that you may, if you wish, add or take away anything.
And Cebes said, I do not at present wish to take anything away or to add anything. You have expressed my meaning.
Socrates paused for some time and was absorbed in thought. Then he said: It is no small thing that you seek; for the cause of generation and decay must be completely investigated.

96
96a

Phaedo. Now I will tell you my own experience in the matter, if you wish; then if anything I say seems to you to be of any use, you can employ it for the solution of your difficulty.
Certainly, said Cebes, I wish to hear your experiences.
Listen then, and I will tell you. When I was young, Cebes, I was tremendously eager for the kind of wisdom which they call investigation of nature. I thought it was a glorious thing to know the causes of everything, why each thing comes into being and why it perishes and why it exists;
96b
and I was always unsettling myself with such questions as these: Do heat and cold, by a sort of fermentation, bring about the organization of animals, as some people say? Is it the blood, or air, or fire by which we think? Or is it none of these, and does the brain furnish the sensations of hearing and sight and smell, and do memory and opinion arise from these, and does knowledge come from memory and opinion in a state of rest? And again I tried to find out
96c
how these things perish, and I investigated the phenomena of heaven and earth until finally I made up my mind that I was by nature totally unfitted for this kind of investigation. And I will give you a sufficient proof of this. I was so completely blinded by these studies that I lost the knowledge that I, and others also, thought I had before; I forgot what I had formerly believed I knew about many things and even about the cause of mans growth. For I had thought previously that it was plain to everyone that man grows through eating and
96d
drinking; for when, from the food he eats, flesh is added to his flesh and bones to his bones, and in the same way the appropriate thing is added to each of his other parts, then the small bulk becomes greater and the small man large. That is what I used to think. Doesnt that seem to you reasonable?
Yes, said Cebes.
Now listen to this, too. I thought I was sure enough, when I saw a tall man standing by a short one, that he was, say, taller by a head than the other,
96e
and that one horse was larger by a head than another horse; and, to mention still clearer things than those, I thought ten were more than eight because two had been added to the eight, and I thought a two-cubit rule was longer than a one-cubit rule because it exceeded it by half its length.
And now, said Cebes, what do you think about them?

blood 1 w 2696
or 28 w 2699
air 1 w 2702
or 29 w 2705
fire 1 w 2709
by 3 w 2711
which 2 w 2716
we 10 w 2718
think 4 w 2723
Or 1 w 2726
is 38 w 2728
it 26 w 2730
none 2 w 2734
of 20 w 2736
these 2 w 2741
and 26 w 2745
does 2 w 2749
the 39 w 2752
brain 1 w 2757
furnish 1 w 2764
the 40 w 2767
sensations 1 w 2777
of 21 w 2779
hearing 1 w 2786
and 27 w 2789
sight 2 w 2794
and 28 w 2797
smell 1 w 2802
and 29 w 2806
do 10 w 2808
memory 1 w 2814
and 30 w 2817
opinion 1 w 2824
arise 1 w 2829
from 1 w 2833
these 3 w 2838
and 31 w 2842
does 3 w 2846
knowledge 1 w 2855
come 3 w 2859
from 2 w 2863
memory 2 w 2869
and 32 w 2872
opinion 2 w 2879
in 50 w 2881
a 224 w 2882
state 2 w 2887
of 22 w 2889
rest 2 w 2893
And 4 w 2897
again 3 w 2902
I 18 w 2903
tried 1 w 2908
to 20 w 2910
find 4 w 2914
out 4 w 2917
how 4 w 2920
these 4 w 2925
things 2 w 2931
perish 3 w 2937
and 33 w 2941
I 19 w 2942
investigated 2 w 2954
the 43 w 2957
phenomena 1 w 2966
of 23 w 2968
heaven 1 w 2974
and 34 w 2977
earth 1 w 2982
until 1 w 2987
finally 2 w 2994
I 20 w 2995
made 1 w 2999
up 1 w 3001
my 5 w 3003
mind 1 w 3007
that 13 w 3011
I 21 w 3012
was 9 w 3015
by 4 w 3017
nature 2 w 3023
totally 1 w 3030
unfitted 1 w 3038
for 11 w 3041
this 5 w 3045
kind 2 w 3049
of 24 w 3051
investigation 2 w 3064
And 5 w 3068
I 22 w 3069
will 6 w 3073
give 1 w 3077
you 20 w 3080
a 241 w 3081
sufficient 1 w 3091
proof 2 w 3096
of 26 w 3098
this 6 w 3102
I 23 w 3104
was 10 w 3107
so 18 w 3109
completely 2 w 3119
blinded 1 w 3126
by 5 w 3128
these 5 w 3133
studies 1 w 3140
that 14 w 3144
I 24 w 3145
lost 1 w 3149
the 45 w 3152
knowledge 2 w 3161
that 15 w 3165
I 25 w 3166
and 35 w 3170
others 1 w 3176
also 1 w 3180
thought 3 w 3188
I 26 w 3189
had 2 w 3192
before 3 w 3198
I 27 w 3200
forgot 1 w 3206
what 6 w 3210
I 28 w 3211
had 3 w 3214
formerly 1 w 3222
believed 1 w 3230
I 29 w 3231
knew 2 w 3235
about 3 w 3240
many 2 w 3244
things 3 w 3250
and 36 w 3253
even 1 w 3257
about 4 w 3262
the 47 w 3265
cause 3 w 3270
of 27 w 3272
man 5 w 3275
s 219 w 3277
growth 1 w 3283
For 2 w 3287
I 30 w 3288
had 4 w 3291
thought 4 w 3298
previously 1 w 3308
that 16 w 3312
it 28 w 3314
was 11 w 3317
plain 1 w 3322
to 22 w 3324
everyone 1 w 3332
that 17 w 3336
man 6 w 3339
grows 1 w 3344
through 2 w 3351
eating 1 w 3357
and 37 w 3360
drinking 1 w 3368
for 15 w 3372
when 2 w 3376
from 3 w 3381
the 48 w 3384
food 1 w 3388
he 72 w 3390
eats 1 w 3394
flesh 1 w 3400
is 44 w 3402
added 1 w 3407
to 23 w 3409
his 11 w 3412
flesh 2 w 3417
and 38 w 3420
bones 1 w 3425
to 24 w 3427
his 12 w 3430
bones 2 w 3435
and 39 w 3439
in 65 w 3441
the 49 w 3444
same 2 w 3448
way 5 w 3451
the 50 w 3454
appropriate 1 w 3465
thing 13 w 3470
is 47 w 3472
added 2 w 3477
to 25 w 3479
each 3 w 3483
of 28 w 3485
his 13 w 3488
other 3 w 3493
parts 1 w 3498
then 3 w 3503
the 53 w 3506
small 2 w 3511
bulk 1 w 3515
becomes 1 w 3522
greater 1 w 3529
and 40 w 3532
the 54 w 3535
small 3 w 3540
man 7 w 3543
large 1 w 3548
That 4 w 3553
is 49 w 3555
what 7 w 3559
I 31 w 3560
used 2 w 3564
to 26 w 3566
think 5 w 3571
Doesn 1 w 3577
t 331 w 3579
that 18 w 3583
seem 5 w 3587
to 27 w 3589
you 21 w 3592
reasonable 1 w 3602
Yes 1 w 3606
said 8 w 3611
Cebes 7 w 3616
Now 5 w 3620
listen 1 w 3626
to 28 w 3628
this 7 w 3632
too 1 w 3636
I 32 w 3638
thought 5 w 3645
I 33 w 3646
was 12 w 3649
sure 1 w 3653
enough 1 w 3659
when 3 w 3664
I 34 w 3665
saw 1 w 3668
a 289 w 3669
tall 2 w 3673
man 8 w 3676
standing 1 w 3684
by 6 w 3686
a 293 w 3687
short 1 w 3692
one 8 w 3695
that 19 w 3700
he 80 w 3702
was 13 w 3705
say 7 w 3709
taller 1 w 3716
by 7 w 3718
a 298 w 3719
head 2 w 3723
than 3 w 3727
the 55 w 3730
other 4 w 3735
and 42 w 3739
that 20 w 3743
one 9 w 3746
horse 1 w 3751
was 14 w 3754
larger 1 w 3760
by 8 w 3762
a 305 w 3763
head 3 w 3767
than 4 w 3771
another 1 w 3778
horse 2 w 3783
and 43 w 3787
to 30 w 3790
mention 1 w 3797
still 1 w 3802
clearer 1 w 3809
things 4 w 3815
than 5 w 3819
those 1 w 3824
I 35 w 3826
thought 6 w 3833
ten 3 w 3836
were 3 w 3840
more 2 w 3844
than 6 w 3848
eight 1 w 3853
because 1 w 3860
two 1 w 3863
had 5 w 3866
been 2 w 3870
added 3 w 3875
to 31 w 3877
the 58 w 3880
eight 2 w 3885
and 44 w 3889
I 36 w 3890
thought 7 w 3897
a 317 w 3898
two-cubit 1 w 3907
rule 1 w 3911
was 15 w 3914
longer 1 w 3920
than 7 w 3924
a 320 w 3925
one-cubit 1 w 3934
rule 2 w 3938
because 2 w 3945
it 31 w 3947
exceeded 1 w 3955
it 32 w 3957
by 9 w 3959
half 1 w 3963
its 3 w 3966
length 1 w 3972
And 6 w 3976
now 5 w 3979
said 9 w 3984
Cebes 8 w 3989
what 8 w 3994
do 12 w 3996
you 22 w 3999
think 6 w 4004
about 5 w 4009
them 1 w 4013
