Phaedo.
To begin with, then, it is clear that in such matters the philosopher, more than other men, separates
65
65a
the soul from communion with the body?
It is.
Now certainly most people think that a man who takes no pleasure and has no part in such things doesnt deserve to live, and that one who cares nothing for the pleasures of the body is about as good as dead.
That is very true.
Now, how about the acquirement of pure knowledge? Is the body a hindrance or not, if it is made to share in the search for wisdom?
65b
What I mean is this: Have the sight and hearing of men any truth in them, or is it true, as the poets are always telling us, that we neither hear nor see any thing accurately? And yet if these two physical senses are not accurate or exact, the rest are not likely to be, for they are inferior to these. Do you not think so?
Certainly I do, he replied.
Then, said he, when does the soul attain to truth? For when it tries to consider anything in company with the body, it is evidently deceived by it.
65c
True.
In thought, then, if at all, something of the realities becomes clear to it?
Yes.
But it thinks best when none of these things troubles it, neither hearing nor sight, nor pain nor any pleasure, but it is, so far as possible, alone by itself, and takes leave of the body, and avoiding, so far as it can, all association or contact with the body, reaches out toward the reality.
That is true.
In this matter also, then,
65d
the soul of the philosopher greatly despises the body and avoids it and strives to be alone by itself?
Evidently.
Now how about such things as this, Simmias? Do we think there is such a thing as absolute justice, or not?
We certainly think there is.
And absolute beauty and goodness.
Of course.
Well, did you ever see anything of that kind with your eyes?
Certainly not, said he.
Or did you ever reach them with any of the bodily senses? I am speaking of all such things, as size, health, strength, and in short the essence
65e
or underlying quality of everything. Is their true nature contemplated by means of the body? Is it not rather the case that he who prepares himself most carefully to understand the true essence of each thing that he examines would come nearest to the knowledge of it?
Certainly.

Phaedo.
Would not that man do this most perfectly who approaches each thing, so far as possible, with the reason alone, not introducing sight into his reasoning nor dragging in
66
66a
any of the other senses along with his thinking, but who employs pure, absolute reason in his attempt to search out the pure, absolute essence of things, and who removes himself, so far as possible, from eyes and ears, and, in a word, from his whole body, because he feels that its companionship disturbs the soul and hinders it from attaining truth and wisdom? Is not this the man, Simmias, if anyone, to attain to the knowledge of reality?
That is true as true can be, Socrates, said Simmias.
66b
Then, said he, all this must cause good lovers of wisdom to think and say one to the other something like this: There seems to be a short cut which leads us and our argument to the conclusion in our search that so long as we have the body, and the soul is contaminated by such an evil, we shall never attain completely what we desire, that is, the truth. For the body keeps us constantly busy by reason of its need of sustenance;
66c
and moreover, if diseases come upon it they hinder our pursuit of the truth. And the body fills us with passions and desires and fears, and all sorts of fancies and foolishness, so that, as they say, it really and truly makes it impossible for us to think at all. The body and its desires are the only cause of wars and factions and battles; for all wars arise for the sake of gaining money, and we are compelled to gain money
66d
for the sake of the body. We are slaves to its service. And so, because of all these things, we have no leisure for philosophy. But the worst of all is that if we do get a bit of leisure and turn to philosophy, the body is constantly breaking in upon our studies and disturbing us with noise and confusion, so that it prevents our beholding the truth, and in fact we perceive that, if we are ever to know anything absolutely, we must be free from the body and must behold
66e
the actual realities with the eye of the soul alone. And then, as our argument shows, when we are dead we are likely to possess the wisdom which we desire and claim to be enamored of, but not while we live.

body 12 w 2791
fills 1 w 2796
us 11 w 2798
with 9 w 2802
passions 1 w 2810
and 20 w 2813
desires 1 w 2820
and 21 w 2823
fears 1 w 2828
and 22 w 2832
all 6 w 2835
sorts 1 w 2840
of 22 w 2842
fancies 1 w 2849
and 23 w 2852
foolishness 1 w 2863
so 27 w 2866
that 12 w 2870
as 28 w 2873
they 3 w 2877
say 2 w 2880
it 37 w 2883
really 1 w 2889
and 24 w 2892
truly 1 w 2897
makes 1 w 2902
it 38 w 2904
impossible 1 w 2914
for 4 w 2917
us 12 w 2919
to 20 w 2921
think 8 w 2926
at 36 w 2928
all 8 w 2931
The 4 w 2935
body 13 w 2939
and 25 w 2942
its 5 w 2945
desires 2 w 2952
are 10 w 2955
the 61 w 2958
only 1 w 2962
cause 3 w 2967
of 23 w 2969
wars 1 w 2973
and 26 w 2976
factions 1 w 2984
and 27 w 2987
battles 1 w 2994
for 5 w 2998
all 9 w 3001
wars 2 w 3005
arise 1 w 3010
for 6 w 3013
the 62 w 3016
sake 1 w 3020
of 24 w 3022
gaining 1 w 3029
money 1 w 3034
and 28 w 3038
we 6 w 3040
are 11 w 3043
compelled 1 w 3052
to 21 w 3054
gain 2 w 3058
money 2 w 3063
for 7 w 3066
the 63 w 3069
sake 2 w 3073
of 25 w 3075
the 64 w 3078
body 14 w 3082
We 3 w 3085
are 12 w 3088
slaves 1 w 3094
to 22 w 3096
its 6 w 3099
service 1 w 3106
And 4 w 3110
so 28 w 3112
because 2 w 3120
of 26 w 3122
all 10 w 3125
these 4 w 3130
things 6 w 3136
we 7 w 3139
have 2 w 3143
no 23 w 3145
leisure 1 w 3152
for 8 w 3155
philosophy 1 w 3165
But 2 w 3169
the 66 w 3172
worst 1 w 3177
of 27 w 3179
all 11 w 3182
is 36 w 3184
that 13 w 3188
if 6 w 3190
we 8 w 3192
do 10 w 3194
get 1 w 3197
a 244 w 3198
bit 1 w 3201
of 28 w 3203
leisure 2 w 3210
and 29 w 3213
turn 1 w 3217
to 23 w 3219
philosophy 2 w 3229
the 67 w 3233
body 15 w 3237
is 38 w 3239
constantly 2 w 3249
breaking 1 w 3257
in 70 w 3259
upon 2 w 3263
our 6 w 3266
studies 1 w 3273
and 30 w 3276
disturbing 1 w 3286
us 15 w 3288
with 10 w 3292
noise 1 w 3297
and 31 w 3300
confusion 1 w 3309
so 31 w 3312
that 14 w 3316
it 43 w 3318
prevents 1 w 3326
our 7 w 3329
beholding 1 w 3338
the 68 w 3341
truth 6 w 3346
and 32 w 3350
in 73 w 3352
fact 2 w 3356
we 9 w 3358
perceive 1 w 3366
that 15 w 3370
if 7 w 3373
we 10 w 3375
are 13 w 3378
ever 5 w 3382
to 24 w 3384
know 4 w 3388
anything 3 w 3396
absolutely 1 w 3406
we 11 w 3409
must 2 w 3413
be 12 w 3415
free 1 w 3419
from 5 w 3423
the 69 w 3426
body 16 w 3430
and 33 w 3433
must 3 w 3437
behold 2 w 3443
the 70 w 3446
actual 1 w 3452
realities 2 w 3461
with 11 w 3465
the 71 w 3468
eye 3 w 3471
of 29 w 3473
the 72 w 3476
soul 6 w 3480
alone 4 w 3485
And 5 w 3489
then 4 w 3493
as 29 w 3496
our 8 w 3499
argument 2 w 3507
shows 1 w 3512
when 4 w 3517
we 12 w 3519
are 14 w 3522
dead 2 w 3526
we 13 w 3528
are 15 w 3531
likely 2 w 3537
to 25 w 3539
possess 1 w 3546
the 74 w 3549
wisdom 4 w 3555
which 2 w 3560
we 14 w 3562
desire 4 w 3568
and 34 w 3571
claim 1 w 3576
to 26 w 3578
be 14 w 3580
enamored 1 w 3588
of 30 w 3590
but 3 w 3594
not 12 w 3597
while 1 w 3602
we 15 w 3604
live 2 w 3608
