Phaedo.
Now these streams are many and great and of all sorts, but among the many are four streams, the greatest and outermost of which is that called Oceanus, which flows round in a circle, and opposite this, flowing in the opposite direction, is Acheron, which flows through
113
113a
various desert places and, passing under the earth, comes to the Acherusian lake. To this lake the souls of most of the dead go and, after remaining there the appointed time, which is for some longer and for others shorter, are sent back to be born again into living beings. The third river flows out between these two, and near the place whence it issues it falls into a vast region burning with a great fire and makes a lake larger than our Mediterranean sea, boiling with water and mud.
113b
Thence it flows in a circle, turbid and muddy, and comes in its winding course, among other places, to the edge of the Acherusian lake, but does not mingle with its water. Then, after winding about many times underground, it flows into Tartarus at a lower level. This is the river which is called Pyriphlegethon, and the streams of lava which spout up at various places on earth are offshoots from it. Opposite this the fourth river issues, it is said, first into a wild and awful place, which is all of a dark blue color, like lapis lazuli.
113c
This is called the Stygian river, and the lake which it forms by flowing in is the Styx. And when the river has flowed in here and has received fearful powers into its waters, it passes under the earth and, circling round in the direction opposed to that of Pyriphlegethon, it meets it coming from the other way in the Acherusian lake. And the water of this river also mingles with no other water, but this also passes round in a circle and falls into Tartarus opposite Pyriphlegethon. And the name of this river, as the Poets say, is Cocytus.
113d
Such is the nature of these things. Now when the dead have come to the place where each is led by his genius, first they are judged and sentenced, as they have lived well and piously, or not. And those who are found to have lived neither well nor ill, go to the Acheron and, embarking upon vessels provided for them, arrive in them at the lake; there they dwell and are purified, and if they have done any wrong they are absolved by paying the penalty for their wrong doings,
113e
and for their good deeds they receive rewards, each according to his merits. But those who appear to be incurable, on account of the greatness of their wrongdoings, because they have committed many great deeds of sacrilege, or wicked and abominable murders, or any other such crimes, are cast by their fitting destiny into Tartarus, whence they never emerge.

Phaedo. Those, however, who are curable, but are found to have committed great sinswho have, for example, in a moment of passion done some act of violence against father or mother and
114
114a
have lived in repentance the rest of their lives, or who have slain some other person under similar conditionsthese must needs be thrown into Tartarus, and when they have been there a year the wave casts them out, the homicides by way of Cocytus, those who have outraged their parents by way of Pyriphlegethon. And when they have been brought by the current to the Acherusian lake, they shout and cry out, calling to those whom they have slain or outraged, begging and beseeching them
114b
to be gracious and to let them come out into the lake; and if they prevail they come out and cease from their ills, but if not, they are borne away again to Tartarus and thence back into the rivers, and this goes on until they prevail upon those whom they have wronged; for this is the penalty imposed upon them by the judges. But those who are found to have excelled in holy living are freed from these regions within the earth and are released as from prisons;
114c
they mount upward into their pure abode and dwell upon the earth. And of these, all who have duly purified themselves by philosophy live henceforth altogether without bodies, and pass to still more beautiful abodes which it is not easy to describe, nor have we now time enough.
But, Simmias, because of all these things which we have recounted we ought to do our best to acquire virtue and wisdom in life. For the prize is fair and the hope great.
114d
Now it would not be fitting for a man of sense to maintain that all this is just as I have described it, but that this or something like it is true concerning our souls and their abodes, since the soul is shown to be immortal, I think he may properly and worthily venture to believe; for the venture is well worth while; and he ought to repeat such things to himself as if they were magic charms, which is the reason why I have been lengthening out the story so long. This then is why a man should be of good cheer about his soul, who in his life
114e
has rejected the pleasures and ornaments of the body, thinking they are alien to him and more likely to do him harm than good, and has sought eagerly for those of learning, and after adorning his soul with no alien ornaments, but with its own proper adornment of self-restraint and justice and
115

courage and freedom and truth, awaits his departure to the other world, ready to go when fate calls him.

they 13 w 2807
prevail 1 w 2814
they 14 w 2818
come 5 w 2822
out 11 w 2825
and 32 w 2828
cease 1 w 2833
from 3 w 2837
their 7 w 2842
ills 1 w 2846
but 5 w 2850
if 4 w 2852
not 3 w 2855
they 15 w 2860
are 13 w 2863
borne 1 w 2868
away 1 w 2872
again 3 w 2877
to 24 w 2879
Tartarus 5 w 2887
and 33 w 2890
thence 1 w 2896
back 2 w 2900
into 10 w 2904
the 83 w 2907
rivers 1 w 2913
and 34 w 2917
this 7 w 2921
goes 1 w 2925
on 25 w 2927
until 1 w 2932
they 16 w 2936
prevail 2 w 2943
upon 2 w 2947
those 5 w 2952
whom 2 w 2956
they 17 w 2960
have 14 w 2964
wronged 1 w 2971
for 8 w 2975
this 8 w 2979
is 28 w 2981
the 86 w 2984
penalty 2 w 2991
imposed 1 w 2998
upon 3 w 3002
them 6 w 3006
by 8 w 3008
the 88 w 3011
judges 1 w 3017
But 2 w 3021
those 6 w 3026
who 9 w 3029
are 14 w 3032
found 3 w 3037
to 26 w 3039
have 15 w 3043
excelled 1 w 3051
in 60 w 3053
holy 1 w 3057
living 2 w 3063
are 15 w 3066
freed 1 w 3071
from 4 w 3075
these 5 w 3080
regions 1 w 3087
within 1 w 3093
the 90 w 3096
earth 4 w 3101
and 35 w 3104
are 16 w 3107
released 1 w 3115
as 14 w 3117
from 5 w 3121
prisons 1 w 3128
they 18 w 3133
mount 1 w 3138
upward 1 w 3144
into 11 w 3148
their 8 w 3153
pure 1 w 3157
abode 1 w 3162
and 36 w 3165
dwell 2 w 3170
upon 4 w 3174
the 93 w 3177
earth 5 w 3182
And 6 w 3186
of 21 w 3188
these 6 w 3193
all 9 w 3197
who 10 w 3200
have 16 w 3204
duly 1 w 3208
purified 2 w 3216
themselves 1 w 3226
by 9 w 3228
philosophy 1 w 3238
live 5 w 3242
henceforth 1 w 3252
altogether 1 w 3262
without 1 w 3269
bodies 1 w 3275
and 37 w 3279
pass 5 w 3283
to 29 w 3285
still 1 w 3290
more 1 w 3294
beautiful 1 w 3303
abodes 1 w 3309
which 9 w 3314
it 31 w 3316
is 30 w 3318
not 4 w 3321
easy 1 w 3325
to 30 w 3327
describe 1 w 3335
nor 2 w 3339
have 17 w 3343
we 10 w 3345
now 1 w 3348
time 3 w 3352
enough 1 w 3358
But 3 w 3362
Simmias 1 w 3370
because 2 w 3378
of 22 w 3380
all 10 w 3383
these 7 w 3388
things 2 w 3394
which 10 w 3399
we 11 w 3401
have 18 w 3405
recounted 1 w 3414
we 12 w 3416
ought 2 w 3421
to 31 w 3423
do 8 w 3425
our 5 w 3428
best 1 w 3432
to 32 w 3434
acquire 1 w 3441
virtue 1 w 3447
and 38 w 3450
wisdom 1 w 3456
in 65 w 3458
life 1 w 3462
For 1 w 3466
the 98 w 3469
prize 1 w 3474
is 32 w 3476
fair 1 w 3480
and 39 w 3483
the 99 w 3486
hope 1 w 3490
great 7 w 3495
Now 3 w 3499
it 32 w 3501
would 1 w 3506
not 5 w 3509
be 16 w 3511
fitting 2 w 3518
for 10 w 3521
a 261 w 3522
man 5 w 3525
of 23 w 3527
sense 1 w 3532
to 33 w 3534
maintain 1 w 3542
that 3 w 3546
all 11 w 3549
this 9 w 3553
is 34 w 3555
just 1 w 3559
as 18 w 3561
I 1 w 3562
have 19 w 3566
described 1 w 3575
it 34 w 3577
but 6 w 3581
that 4 w 3585
this 10 w 3589
or 27 w 3591
something 1 w 3600
like 2 w 3604
it 35 w 3606
is 36 w 3608
true 1 w 3612
concerning 1 w 3622
our 6 w 3625
souls 2 w 3630
and 40 w 3633
their 9 w 3638
abodes 2 w 3644
since 1 w 3650
the 101 w 3653
soul 3 w 3657
is 37 w 3659
shown 1 w 3664
to 34 w 3666
be 18 w 3668
immortal 1 w 3676
I 2 w 3678
think 1 w 3683
he 120 w 3685
may 1 w 3688
properly 1 w 3696
and 41 w 3699
worthily 1 w 3707
venture 1 w 3714
to 35 w 3716
believe 1 w 3723
for 11 w 3727
the 102 w 3730
venture 2 w 3737
is 38 w 3739
well 5 w 3743
worth 2 w 3748
while 1 w 3753
and 42 w 3757
he 122 w 3759
ought 3 w 3764
to 36 w 3766
repeat 1 w 3772
such 2 w 3776
things 3 w 3782
to 37 w 3784
himself 1 w 3791
as 19 w 3793
if 8 w 3795
they 19 w 3799
were 1 w 3803
magic 1 w 3808
charms 1 w 3814
which 11 w 3820
is 39 w 3822
the 104 w 3825
reason 1 w 3831
why 1 w 3834
I 3 w 3835
have 20 w 3839
been 3 w 3843
lengthening 1 w 3854
out 13 w 3857
the 106 w 3860
story 1 w 3865
so 16 w 3867
long 2 w 3871
This 3 w 3876
then 3 w 3880
is 41 w 3882
why 2 w 3885
a 282 w 3886
man 6 w 3889
should 1 w 3895
be 21 w 3897
of 24 w 3899
good 2 w 3903
cheer 1 w 3908
about 2 w 3913
his 16 w 3916
soul 4 w 3920
who 11 w 3924
in 75 w 3926
his 17 w 3929
life 2 w 3933
has 3 w 3936
rejected 1 w 3944
the 108 w 3947
pleasures 1 w 3956
and 43 w 3959
ornaments 1 w 3968
of 25 w 3970
the 109 w 3973
body 1 w 3977
thinking 1 w 3986
they 20 w 3990
are 17 w 3993
alien 1 w 3998
to 39 w 4000
him 2 w 4003
and 44 w 4006
more 2 w 4010
likely 1 w 4016
to 40 w 4018
do 10 w 4020
him 3 w 4023
harm 2 w 4027
than 2 w 4031
good 3 w 4035
and 45 w 4039
has 4 w 4042
sought 1 w 4048
eagerly 1 w 4055
for 12 w 4058
those 7 w 4063
of 26 w 4065
learning 1 w 4073
and 46 w 4077
after 3 w 4082
adorning 1 w 4090
his 18 w 4093
soul 5 w 4097
with 7 w 4101
no 11 w 4103
alien 2 w 4108
ornaments 2 w 4117
but 7 w 4121
with 8 w 4125
its 5 w 4128
own 3 w 4131
proper 2 w 4137
adornment 1 w 4146
of 27 w 4148
self-restraint 1 w 4162
and 47 w 4165
justice 1 w 4172
and 48 w 4175
courage 1 w 4182
and 49 w 4185
freedom 1 w 4192
and 50 w 4195
truth 1 w 4200
awaits 1 w 4207
his 19 w 4210
departure 1 w 4219
to 41 w 4221
the 111 w 4224
other 8 w 4229
world 1 w 4234
ready 1 w 4240
to 42 w 4242
go 7 w 4244
when 7 w 4248
fate 1 w 4252
calls 1 w 4257
him 4 w 4260
