And when Hermogenes observed,

That is a surprising statement,
he had replied,
Do you think it surprising that even God holds it better for me to die now? Do you not know that I would refuse to concede that any man has lived a better life than I have up to now? For I have realized that my whole life has been spent in righteousness toward God and man,—a fact that affords the greatest satisfaction; and so I have felt a deep self-respect and have discovered that my associates hold corresponding sentiments toward me.

But now, if my years are prolonged, I know that the frailties of old age will inevitably be realized,—that my vision must be less perfect and my hearing less keen, that I shall be slower to learn and more forgetful of what I have learned. If I perceive my decay and take to complaining, how,
he had continued,
could I any longer take pleasure in life?

And 1 w 3
when 1 w 7
Hermogenes 1 w 17
observed 1 w 25
That 1 w 30
is 1 w 32
a 2 w 33
surprising 1 w 43
statement 1 w 52
he 2 w 55
had 1 w 58
replied 1 w 65
Do 1 w 68
you 1 w 71
think 1 w 76
it 1 w 78
surprising 2 w 88
that 1 w 92
even 1 w 96
God 1 w 99
holds 1 w 104
it 2 w 106
better 1 w 112
for 1 w 115
me 2 w 117
to 1 w 119
die 1 w 122
now 1 w 125
Do 2 w 128
you 2 w 131
not 1 w 134
know 1 w 138
that 2 w 142
I 1 w 143
would 1 w 148
refuse 1 w 154
to 2 w 156
concede 1 w 163
that 3 w 167
any 1 w 170
man 1 w 173
has 1 w 176
lived 1 w 181
a 11 w 182
better 2 w 188
life 1 w 192
than 1 w 196
I 2 w 197
have 1 w 201
up 1 w 203
to 3 w 205
now 3 w 208
For 1 w 212
I 3 w 213
have 2 w 217
realized 1 w 225
that 4 w 229
my 1 w 231
whole 1 w 236
life 2 w 240
has 2 w 243
been 1 w 247
spent 1 w 252
in 4 w 254
righteousness 1 w 267
toward 1 w 273
God 2 w 276
and 1 w 279
man 2 w 282
a 21 w 285
fact 1 w 289
that 5 w 293
affords 1 w 300
the 1 w 303
greatest 1 w 311
satisfaction 1 w 323
and 2 w 327
so 1 w 329
I 4 w 330
have 3 w 334
felt 1 w 338
a 30 w 339
deep 1 w 343
self-respect 1 w 355
and 3 w 358
have 4 w 362
discovered 1 w 372
that 6 w 376
my 2 w 378
associates 1 w 388
hold 2 w 392
corresponding 1 w 405
sentiments 1 w 415
toward 2 w 421
me 4 w 423
But 1 w 427
now 4 w 430
if 3 w 433
my 3 w 435
years 1 w 440
are 1 w 443
prolonged 1 w 452
I 5 w 454
know 2 w 458
that 7 w 462
the 2 w 465
frailties 1 w 474
of 1 w 476
old 3 w 479
age 1 w 482
will 1 w 486
inevitably 1 w 496
be 4 w 498
realized 2 w 506
that 8 w 512
my 4 w 514
vision 1 w 520
must 1 w 524
be 5 w 526
less 1 w 530
perfect 1 w 537
and 4 w 540
my 5 w 542
hearing 1 w 549
less 2 w 553
keen 1 w 557
that 9 w 562
I 6 w 563
shall 1 w 568
be 6 w 570
slower 1 w 576
to 6 w 578
learn 1 w 583
and 5 w 586
more 1 w 590
forgetful 1 w 599
of 2 w 601
what 1 w 605
I 7 w 606
have 5 w 610
learned 1 w 617
If 1 w 620
I 9 w 621
perceive 1 w 629
my 6 w 631
decay 1 w 636
and 6 w 639
take 1 w 643
to 7 w 645
complaining 1 w 656
how 1 w 660
he 6 w 663
had 2 w 666
continued 1 w 675
could 1 w 681
I 10 w 682
any 2 w 685
longer 1 w 691
take 2 w 695
pleasure 1 w 703
in 11 w 705
life 3 w 709
