And the crowning disgrace is that your posterity also is bound by the same peace which these hopes prompted you to conclude; so completely were you led astray. Why do I mention this now and assert that these men ought to be called upon? I vow that I will boldly tell you the whole truth and keep nothing back.

It is not that by descending to abuse I may lay myself open to retaliation in your presence,[*] while I give those who from the first have fallen foul of me an excuse for making further profit out of Philip. Nor do I wish to indulge in idle talk. But I think that one day Philips policy will cause you more distress than it does now,

for I see the plot thickening. I hope I may prove a false prophet, but I fear the catastrophe is even now only too near. So when you can no longer shut your eyes to what is happening, when you do not need me or someone else to tell you, but can all see for yourselves and be quite certain that all this is directed against you, then I expect you will be angry and exasperated.

Yes, I am afraid that, since the ambassadors have kept silence about the services for which they know they have been bribed, those who are trying to repair some of the losses that these men have caused may chance to fall under your displeasure; for I observe that people vent their wrath as a rule, not on those who are to blame, but chiefly on those who are within their reach.

Now therefore, while the danger is in the future and is gathering head, while we can still hear one another speak, I want to remind each one of you, however clearly he knows it, who it is that persuaded you to abandon the Phocians and Thermopylae, the command of which gave Philip the command also of the road to Attica and the Peloponnesus, and who it is that has forced you to take counsel, not for your rights and interests abroad, but for your possessions here at home and for the war in Attica, a war which will bring distress on every one of us, when it does come, but which really dates from that very day.

yourselves 1 w 1016
and 4 w 1019
be 3 w 1021
quite 1 w 1026

that 6 w 1037
all 4 w 1040
this 2 w 1044
is 14 w 1046
directed 1 w 1054
against 2 w 1061
you 13 w 1064
then 2 w 1069
I 13 w 1070
expect 1 w 1076
you 14 w 1079
will 3 w 1083
be 4 w 1085
angry 1 w 1090
and 5 w 1093
exasperated 1 w 1104
Yes 1 w 1108
I 14 w 1110
am 3 w 1112
afraid 1 w 1118
that 7 w 1122
since 1 w 1128
the 14 w 1131
ambassadors 1 w 1142
have 2 w 1146
kept 1 w 1150
silence 1 w 1157
about 1 w 1162
the 15 w 1165
services 1 w 1173
for 4 w 1176
which 3 w 1181
they 1 w 1185
know 1 w 1189
they 2 w 1193
have 3 w 1197
been 1 w 1201
bribed 1 w 1207
those 2 w 1213
who 3 w 1216
are 2 w 1219
trying 1 w 1225
to 13 w 1227
repair 1 w 1233
some 2 w 1237
of 6 w 1239
the 18 w 1242
losses 1 w 1248
that 8 w 1252
these 3 w 1257
men 3 w 1260
have 4 w 1264
caused 1 w 1270
may 3 w 1273
chance 1 w 1279
to 14 w 1281
fall 2 w 1285
under 1 w 1290
your 6 w 1294
displeasure 1 w 1305
for 5 w 1309
I 15 w 1310
observe 1 w 1317
that 9 w 1321
people 1 w 1327
vent 1 w 1331
their 1 w 1336
wrath 1 w 1341
as 7 w 1343
a 93 w 1344
rule 1 w 1348
not 4 w 1352
on 10 w 1354
those 3 w 1359
who 4 w 1362
are 3 w 1365
to 15 w 1367
blame 1 w 1372
but 3 w 1376
chiefly 1 w 1383
on 11 w 1385
those 4 w 1390
who 5 w 1393
are 4 w 1396
within 1 w 1402
their 2 w 1407
reach 1 w 1412
Now 1 w 1416
therefore 1 w 1425
while 2 w 1431
the 23 w 1434
danger 1 w 1440
is 16 w 1442
in 26 w 1444
the 24 w 1447
future 1 w 1453
and 6 w 1456
is 17 w 1458
gathering 1 w 1467
head 1 w 1471
while 3 w 1477
we 2 w 1479
can 3 w 1482
still 1 w 1487
hear 2 w 1491
one 3 w 1494
another 1 w 1501
speak 1 w 1506
I 16 w 1508
want 1 w 1512
to 16 w 1514
remind 1 w 1520
each 2 w 1524
one 4 w 1527
of 7 w 1529
you 16 w 1532
however 1 w 1540
clearly 1 w 1547
he 37 w 1549
knows 1 w 1554
it 8 w 1556
who 6 w 1560
it 9 w 1562
is 18 w 1564
that 10 w 1568
persuaded 1 w 1577
you 17 w 1580
to 17 w 1582
abandon 1 w 1589
the 27 w 1592
Phocians 1 w 1600
and 8 w 1603
Thermopylae 1 w 1614
the 28 w 1618
command 1 w 1625
of 8 w 1627
which 4 w 1632
gave 1 w 1636
Philip 3 w 1642
the 29 w 1645
command 2 w 1652
also 2 w 1656
of 9 w 1658
the 30 w 1661
road 1 w 1665
to 18 w 1667
Attica 1 w 1673

it 10 w 1700
is 19 w 1702

has 1 w 1709
forced 1 w 1715
you 18 w 1718
to 19 w 1720

here 3 w 1792
at 18 w 1794

a 134 w 1820

will 4 w 1832
bring 1 w 1837
distress 2 w 1845
on 17 w 1847
every 1 w 1852
one 5 w 1855
of 10 w 1857
us 8 w 1859
when 3 w 1864
it 11 w 1866
does 2 w 1870
come 1 w 1874
but 5 w 1878
