Muse, tell me the deeds of golden Aphrodite the Cyprian, who stirs up sweet passion in the gods and subdues the tribes of mortal men and birds that fly in air and all the many creatures
that the dry land rears, and all that the sea: all these love the deeds of rich-crowned Cytherea.
Yet there are three hearts that she cannot bend nor yet ensnare. First is the daughter of Zeus who holds the aegis, bright-eyed Athena; for she has no pleasure in the deeds of golden Aphrodite,
but delights in wars and in the work of Ares, in strifes and battles and in preparing famous crafts. She first taught earthly craftsmen to make chariots of war and cars variously wrought with bronze, and she, too, teaches tender maidens in the house
and puts knowledge of goodly arts in each one's mind. Nor does laughter-loving Aphrodite ever tame in love Artemis, the huntress with shafts of gold; for she loves archery and the slaying of wild beasts in the mountains, the lyre also and dancing and thrilling cries
and shady woods and the cities of upright men. Nor yet does the pure maiden Hestia love Aphrodite's works. She was the first-born child of wily Cronos and youngest too,[*] by will of Zeus who holds the aegis, a queenly maid whom both Poseidon and Apollo sought to wed.
But she was wholly unwilling, nay, stubbornly refused; and touching the head of father Zeus who holds the aegis, she, that fair goddess, swear a great oath which has in truth been fulfilled, that she would be a maiden all her days. So Zeus the Father gave her an high honor instead of marriage,
and she has her place in the midst of the house and has the richest portion. In all the temples of the gods she has a share of honor, and among all mortal men she is chief of the goddesses.
33
Of these three Aphrodite cannot bend or ensnare the hearts. But of all others there is nothing
among the blessed gods or among mortal men that has escaped Aphrodite. Even the heart of Zeus, who delights in thunder, is led astray by her; though he is greatest of all and has the lot of highest majesty, she beguiles even his wise heart whensoever she pleases, and mates him with mortal women,
unknown to Hera, his sister and his wife, the grandest far in beauty among the deathless goddesses most glorious is she whom wily Cronos with her mother Rhea did beget: and Zeus, whose wisdom is everlasting, made her his chaste and careful wife.
But upon Aphrodite herself Zeus cast sweet desire to be joined in love with a mortal man, to the end that, very soon, not even she should be innocent of a mortal's love; lest laughter-loving Aphrodite should one day softly smile and say mockingly among all the gods
that she had joined the gods in love with mortal women who bare sons of death to the deathless gods, and had mated the goddesses with mortal men.
And so he put in her heart sweet desire for Anchises who at that time among the steep hills of many-fountained Ida
was tending cattle, and in shape was like the immortal gods. Therefore, when laughter-loving Aphrodite saw him, she loved him, and terribly desire seized her in her heart. She went to Cyprus, to Paphos, where her precinct is and fragrant altar, and passed into her sweet-smelling temple.
There she went in and put to the glittering doors, and there the Graces bathed her with heavenly oil such as blooms upon the bodies of the eternal gods oil divinely sweet, which she had by her, filled with fragrance. And laughter-loving Aphrodite put on all her rich clothes,
and when she had decked herself with gold, she left sweet-smelling Cyprus and went in haste towards Troy, swiftly travelling high up among the clouds. So she came to many-fountained Ida, the mother of wild creatures and went straight to the homestead across the mountains. After her
came grey wolves, fawning on her, and grim-eyed lions, and bears, and fleet leopards, ravenous for deer: and she was glad in heart to see them, and put desire in their breasts, so that they all mated, two together, about the shadowy coombes.
75
But she herself came to the neat-built shelters, and him she found left quite alone in the homestead the hero Anchises who was comely as the gods. All the others were following the herds over the grassy pastures, and he, left quite alone in the homestead,
was roaming hither and thither and playing thrillingly upon the lyre. And Aphrodite, the daughter of Zeus stood before him, being like a pure maiden in height and mien, that he should not be frightened when he took heed of her with his eyes. Now when Anchises saw her, he marked her well and wondered at
her mien and height and shining garments. For she was clad in a robe out-shining the brightness of fire,
a splendid robe of gold, enriched with all manner of needlework, which shimmered like the moon
over her tender breasts, a marvel to see. Also she wore twisted brooches and shining earrings in the form of flowers;
and round her soft throat were lovely necklaces.
And Anchises was seized with love, and said to her:
Hail, lady, whoever of the blessed ones you are that are come to this house, whether Artemis, or Leto, or golden Aphrodite, or high-born Themis, or bright-eyed Athena.
Or, maybe, you are one of the Graces come hither, who bear the gods company and are called immortal, or else one of the Nymphs who haunt the pleasant woods, or of those who inhabit this lovely mountain and the springs of rivers and grassy meads.
I will make you an altar upon a high peak in a far seen place, and will sacrifice rich offerings to you at all seasons. And do you feel kindly towards me and grant that I may become a man very eminent among the Trojans, and give me strong offspring for the time to come. As for my own self,
let me live long and happily, seeing the light of the sun, and come to the threshold of old age, a man prosperous among the people.”
107
Thereupon Aphrodite the daughter of Zeus answered him: Anchises, most glorious of all men born on earth, know that I am no goddess: why do you liken me to the deathless ones?
Nay, I am but a mortal, and a woman was the mother that bare me. Otreus of famous name is my father, if so be you have heard of him, and he reigns over all Phrygia rich in fortresses. But I know your speech well beside my own, for a Trojan nurse brought me up at home:
she took me from my dear mother and reared me thenceforth when I was a little child. So comes it, then, that I well know your tongue also. And now the Slayer of Argus with the golden wand has caught me up from the dance of huntress Artemis, her with the golden arrows. For there were many of us, nymphs and marriageable[*] maidens,
playing together; and an innumerable company encircled us: from these the Slayer of Argus with the golden wand rapt me away. He carried me over many fields of mortal men and over much land untilled and unpossessed, where savage wild-beasts roam through shady coombes,
until I thought never again to touch the life-giving earth with my feet. And he said that I should be called the wedded wife of Anchises, and should bear you goodly children. But when he had told and advised me, he, the strong Slayer of Argos, went back to the families of the deathless gods,

of 30 w 2598
many-fountained 1 w 2613
Ida 1 w 2616
was 6 w 2619
tending 1 w 2626
cattle 1 w 2632
and 33 w 2636
in 39 w 2638
shape 1 w 2643
was 7 w 2646
like 1 w 2650
the 60 w 2653
immortal 1 w 2661
gods 7 w 2665
Therefore 1 w 2675
when 2 w 2680
laughter-loving 3 w 2695
Aphrodite 9 w 2704
saw 1 w 2707
him 2 w 2710
she 16 w 2714
loved 1 w 2719
him 3 w 2722
and 34 w 2726
terribly 1 w 2734
desire 3 w 2740
seized 1 w 2746
her 18 w 2749
in 41 w 2751
her 19 w 2754
heart 6 w 2759
She 3 w 2763
went 1 w 2767
to 13 w 2769
Cyprus 1 w 2775
to 14 w 2778
Paphos 1 w 2784
where 1 w 2790
her 21 w 2793
precinct 1 w 2801
is 23 w 2803
and 35 w 2806
fragrant 1 w 2814
altar 1 w 2819
and 36 w 2823
passed 1 w 2829
into 1 w 2833
her 22 w 2836
sweet-smelling 1 w 2850
temple 2 w 2856
There 2 w 2862
she 17 w 2865
went 2 w 2869
in 45 w 2871
and 37 w 2874
put 3 w 2877
to 16 w 2879
the 61 w 2882
glittering 1 w 2892
doors 1 w 2897
and 38 w 2901
there 4 w 2906
the 63 w 2909
Graces 1 w 2915
bathed 1 w 2921
her 25 w 2924
with 8 w 2928
heavenly 1 w 2936
oil 1 w 2939
such 1 w 2943
as 25 w 2945
blooms 1 w 2951
upon 2 w 2955
the 65 w 2958
bodies 1 w 2964
of 31 w 2966
the 66 w 2969
eternal 1 w 2976
gods 8 w 2980
oil 2 w 2984
divinely 1 w 2992
sweet 5 w 2997
which 2 w 3003
she 18 w 3006
had 4 w 3009
by 3 w 3011
her 26 w 3014
filled 2 w 3021
with 9 w 3025
fragrance 1 w 3034
And 2 w 3038
laughter-loving 4 w 3053
Aphrodite 10 w 3062
put 4 w 3065
on 25 w 3067
all 12 w 3070
her 27 w 3073
rich 3 w 3077
clothes 1 w 3084
and 39 w 3088
when 3 w 3092
she 19 w 3095
had 5 w 3098
decked 1 w 3104
herself 2 w 3111
with 10 w 3115
gold 4 w 3119
she 20 w 3123
left 1 w 3127
sweet-smelling 2 w 3141
Cyprus 2 w 3147
and 40 w 3150
went 3 w 3154
in 50 w 3156
haste 2 w 3161
towards 1 w 3168
Troy 1 w 3172
swiftly 1 w 3180
travelling 1 w 3190
high 3 w 3194
up 5 w 3196
among 7 w 3201
the 68 w 3204
clouds 1 w 3210
So 2 w 3213
she 21 w 3216
came 1 w 3220
to 18 w 3222
many-fountained 2 w 3237
Ida 2 w 3240
the 69 w 3244
mother 2 w 3250
of 32 w 3252
wild 2 w 3256
creatures 2 w 3265
and 41 w 3268
went 4 w 3272
straight 1 w 3280
to 19 w 3282
the 71 w 3285
homestead 1 w 3294
across 1 w 3300
the 72 w 3303
mountains 2 w 3312
After 1 w 3318
her 30 w 3321
came 2 w 3325
grey 1 w 3329
wolves 1 w 3335
fawning 1 w 3343
on 27 w 3345
her 31 w 3348
and 42 w 3352
grim-eyed 1 w 3361
lions 1 w 3366
and 43 w 3370
bears 1 w 3375
and 44 w 3379
fleet 1 w 3384
leopards 1 w 3392
ravenous 1 w 3401
for 6 w 3404
deer 1 w 3408
and 45 w 3412
she 22 w 3415
was 8 w 3418
glad 1 w 3422
in 55 w 3424
heart 7 w 3429
to 20 w 3431
see 1 w 3434
them 2 w 3438
and 46 w 3442
put 5 w 3445
desire 4 w 3451
in 56 w 3453
their 1 w 3458
breasts 1 w 3465
so 9 w 3468
that 12 w 3472
they 2 w 3476
all 13 w 3479
mated 2 w 3484
two 1 w 3488
together 1 w 3496
about 1 w 3502
the 77 w 3505
shadowy 1 w 3512
coombes 1 w 3519
But 4 w 3523
she 23 w 3526
herself 3 w 3533
came 3 w 3537
to 22 w 3539
the 78 w 3542
neat-built 1 w 3552
shelters 1 w 3560
and 47 w 3564
him 4 w 3567
she 25 w 3570
found 1 w 3575
left 2 w 3579
quite 1 w 3584
alone 1 w 3589
in 57 w 3591
the 79 w 3594
homestead 2 w 3603
the 80 w 3607
hero 1 w 3611
Anchises 2 w 3619
who 12 w 3622
was 9 w 3625
comely 1 w 3631
as 30 w 3633
the 81 w 3636
gods 9 w 3640
All 1 w 3644
the 82 w 3647
others 2 w 3653
were 2 w 3657
following 1 w 3666
the 84 w 3669
herds 1 w 3674
over 1 w 3678
the 85 w 3681
grassy 1 w 3687
pastures 1 w 3695
and 48 w 3699
he 158 w 3701
left 3 w 3706
quite 2 w 3711
alone 2 w 3716
in 59 w 3718
the 86 w 3721
homestead 3 w 3730
was 10 w 3734
roaming 1 w 3741
hither 1 w 3747
and 49 w 3750
thither 1 w 3757
and 50 w 3760
playing 1 w 3767
thrillingly 1 w 3778
upon 3 w 3782
the 89 w 3785
lyre 2 w 3789
And 3 w 3793
Aphrodite 11 w 3802
the 90 w 3806
daughter 2 w 3814
of 33 w 3816
Zeus 8 w 3820
stood 1 w 3825
before 1 w 3831
him 5 w 3834
being 2 w 3840
like 2 w 3844
a 279 w 3845
pure 2 w 3849
maiden 4 w 3855
in 64 w 3857
height 1 w 3863
and 51 w 3866
mien 1 w 3870
that 13 w 3875
he 165 w 3877
should 3 w 3883
not 5 w 3886
be 19 w 3888
frightened 1 w 3898
when 4 w 3902
he 167 w 3904
took 1 w 3908
heed 1 w 3912
of 34 w 3914
her 39 w 3917
with 11 w 3921
his 8 w 3924
eyes 1 w 3928
Now 1 w 3932
when 5 w 3936
Anchises 3 w 3944
saw 2 w 3947
her 40 w 3950
he 172 w 3953
marked 1 w 3959
her 41 w 3962
well 1 w 3966
and 52 w 3969
wondered 1 w 3977
at 35 w 3979
her 42 w 3982
mien 2 w 3986
and 53 w 3989
height 2 w 3995
and 54 w 3998
shining 1 w 4005
garments 1 w 4013
For 1 w 4017
she 26 w 4020
was 11 w 4023
clad 1 w 4027
in 67 w 4029
a 292 w 4030
robe 1 w 4034
out-shining 1 w 4045
the 91 w 4048
brightness 1 w 4058
of 35 w 4060
fire 1 w 4064
a 293 w 4066

which 3 w 4124
shimmered 1 w 4133
like 3 w 4137
the 92 w 4140

over 2 w 4148
her 43 w 4151

Also 1 w 4182
she 27 w 4185

And 4 w 4285
Anchises 4 w 4293
was 12 w 4296
seized 2 w 4302
with 13 w 4306
love 10 w 4310
and 57 w 4314
said 1 w 4318
to 26 w 4320
her 45 w 4323
Hail 1 w 4329
lady 1 w 4334
whoever 1 w 4342

Or 1 w 4467
maybe 1 w 4473
you 3 w 4477

me 27 w 4787
and 62 w 4790

that 15 w 4799
I 5 w 4800

eminent 1 w 4824
among 8 w 4829
the 103 w 4832
Trojans 1 w 4839
and 63 w 4843
give 1 w 4847

As 1 w 4883

me 32 w 4901
live 1 w 4905
long 1 w 4909
and 64 w 4912
happily 1 w 4919
seeing 1 w 4926
the 105 w 4929

and 65 w 4946
come 6 w 4950
to 32 w 4952
the 107 w 4955

of 48 w 4966
old 11 w 4969
age 2 w 4972
a 359 w 4974
man 7 w 4977
prosperous 1 w 4987
among 9 w 4992
the 108 w 4995
people 1 w 5001
Thereupon 1 w 5012
Aphrodite 13 w 5021
the 109 w 5024
daughter 3 w 5032
of 49 w 5034
Zeus 9 w 5038
answered 1 w 5046
him 7 w 5049
Anchises 5 w 5059
most 2 w 5064

of 50 w 5074
all 17 w 5077
men 11 w 5080
born 6 w 5084
on 44 w 5086
earth 2 w 5091
know 3 w 5096
that 16 w 5100
I 6 w 5101
am 16 w 5103
no 19 w 5105
goddess 5 w 5112
why 1 w 5116
do 8 w 5118
you 7 w 5121
liken 1 w 5126
me 35 w 5128
to 33 w 5130
the 110 w 5133
deathless 3 w 5142
ones 2 w 5146
Nay 1 w 5150
I 7 w 5152
am 17 w 5154
but 3 w 5157
a 371 w 5158
mortal 11 w 5164
and 66 w 5168
a 374 w 5169
woman 1 w 5174
was 13 w 5177
the 111 w 5180
mother 3 w 5186
that 17 w 5190
bare 2 w 5194
me 36 w 5196
Otreus 1 w 5203
of 51 w 5205
famous 2 w 5211
name 1 w 5215
is 34 w 5217
my 2 w 5219
father 2 w 5225
if 6 w 5228
so 13 w 5230
be 25 w 5232
you 8 w 5235
have 1 w 5239
heard 1 w 5244
of 52 w 5246
him 8 w 5249
and 67 w 5253
he 210 w 5255
reigns 1 w 5261
over 3 w 5265
all 18 w 5268
Phrygia 1 w 5275
rich 6 w 5279
in 83 w 5281
fortresses 1 w 5291
But 5 w 5295
I 8 w 5296
know 4 w 5300
your 1 w 5304
speech 1 w 5310
well 2 w 5314
beside 1 w 5320
my 3 w 5322
own 4 w 5325
for 12 w 5329
a 387 w 5330
Trojan 2 w 5336
nurse 1 w 5341
brought 1 w 5348
me 38 w 5350
up 9 w 5352
at 44 w 5354
home 4 w 5358
she 28 w 5362
took 2 w 5366
me 40 w 5368
from 1 w 5372
my 4 w 5374
dear 1 w 5378
mother 4 w 5384
and 68 w 5387
reared 1 w 5393
me 41 w 5395
thenceforth 1 w 5406
when 6 w 5410
I 9 w 5411
was 14 w 5414
a 394 w 5415
little 1 w 5421
child 4 w 5426
So 3 w 5429
comes 1 w 5434
it 36 w 5436
then 4 w 5441
that 18 w 5446
I 10 w 5447
well 3 w 5451
know 5 w 5455
your 2 w 5459

also 2 w 5469
And 6 w 5473
now 6 w 5476
the 117 w 5479

the 118 w 5499

has 10 w 5512
caught 1 w 5518
me 43 w 5520
up 10 w 5522
from 2 w 5526
the 119 w 5529
dance 1 w 5534
of 54 w 5536
huntress 2 w 5544
Artemis 3 w 5551
her 52 w 5555
with 15 w 5559
the 120 w 5562
golden 5 w 5568
arrows 1 w 5574
For 2 w 5578
there 5 w 5583
were 5 w 5587
many 4 w 5591
of 55 w 5593
us 26 w 5595
nymphs 1 w 5602
and 70 w 5605
marriageable 1 w 5617
Cattle-earning 1 w 5632
because 1 w 5641
an 95 w 5643

paid 1 w 5661
for 14 w 5664
his 14 w 5667

maidens 2 w 5688
playing 2 w 5696
together 2 w 5704
and 71 w 5708
an 97 w 5710

these 3 w 5749
the 124 w 5752

rapt 1 w 5786
me 45 w 5788
away 1 w 5792
He 5 w 5795
carried 1 w 5802
me 46 w 5804
over 4 w 5808
many 5 w 5812
fields 1 w 5818
of 57 w 5820
mortal 12 w 5826
men 12 w 5829
and 73 w 5832
over 5 w 5836
much 1 w 5840
land 2 w 5844
untilled 1 w 5852
and 75 w 5855
unpossessed 1 w 5866
where 2 w 5872
savage 1 w 5878
wild-beasts 1 w 5889
roam 2 w 5893
through 1 w 5900
shady 2 w 5905
coombes 2 w 5912
until 2 w 5918
I 11 w 5919

to 38 w 5938
touch 2 w 5943
the 126 w 5946
life-giving 1 w 5957
earth 3 w 5962
with 17 w 5966
my 5 w 5968
feet 1 w 5972
And 7 w 5976
he 228 w 5978
said 2 w 5982
that 19 w 5986
I 12 w 5987
should 4 w 5993
be 30 w 5995
called 2 w 6001
the 127 w 6004
wedded 1 w 6010
wife 3 w 6014
of 58 w 6016
Anchises 6 w 6024
and 76 w 6028
should 5 w 6034
bear 3 w 6038
you 11 w 6041
goodly 2 w 6047
children 3 w 6055
But 6 w 6059
when 7 w 6063
he 231 w 6065
had 8 w 6068
told 1 w 6072
and 77 w 6075
advised 1 w 6082
me 48 w 6084
he 232 w 6087
the 128 w 6091
strong 2 w 6097
Slayer 3 w 6103
of 59 w 6105
Argos 1 w 6110
went 5 w 6115
back 1 w 6119
to 41 w 6121
the 129 w 6124
families 1 w 6132
of 60 w 6134
the 130 w 6137
deathless 4 w 6146
gods 11 w 6150
