and he opened his mouth and spoke winged words to Hermes:
Slayer of oxen, trickster, busy one, comrade of the feast, this song of yours is worth fifty cows, and I believe that presently we shall settle our quarrel peacefully. But come now, tell me this, resourceful son of Maia:
has this marvellous thing been with you from your birth, or did some god or mortal man give it you a noble gift and teach you heavenly song? For wonderful is this new-uttered sound I hear, the like of which I vow that no man
nor god dwelling on Olympus ever yet has known but you,O thievish son of Maia.
446
What skill is this? What song for desperate cares? What way of song? For verily here are three things to hand all at once from which to choose, mirth, and love, and sweet sleep.
And though I am a follower of the Olympian Muses who love dances and the bright path of song the full-toned chant and ravishing thrill of flutes yet I never cared for any of those feats of skill at young men's revels, as I do now for this:
I am filled with wonder, O son of Zeus, at your sweet playing. But now, since you, though little, have such glorious skill, sit down, dear boy, and respect the words of your elders For now you shall have renown among the deathless gods, you and your mother also. This I will declare to you exactly:
by this shaft of cornel wood I will surely make you a leader renowned among the deathless gods, and fortunate, and will give you glorious gifts and will not deceive you from first to last.”
Then Hermes answered him with artful words: You question me carefully, O Far-worker; yet I am
not jealous that you should enter upon my art: this day you shall know it. For I seek to be friendly with you both in thought and word. Now you well know all things in your heart, since you sit foremost among the deathless gods, O son of Zeus, and are goodly and strong. And wise Zeus loves you
as all right is, and has given you splendid gifts. And they say that from the utterance of Zeus you have learned both the honors due to the gods, O Far-worker, and oracles from Zeus, even all his ordinances. Of all these I myself have already learned that you have great wealth. Now, you are free to learn whatever you please;
but since, as it seems, your heart is so strongly set on playing the lyre, chant, and play upon it, and give yourself to merriment, taking this as a gift from me, and do you, my friend, bestow glory on me. Sing well with this clear-voiced companion in your hands; for you are skilled in good, well-ordered utterance.
From now on bring it confidently to the rich feast and lovely dance and glorious revel, a joy by night and by day. Whoso with wit and wisdom enquires of it cunningly, him it teaches
through its sound all manner of things that delight the mind, being easily played with gentle familiarities, for it abhors toilsome drudgery; but whoso in ignorance enquires of it violently, to him it chatters mere vanity and foolishness.
488
But you are able to learn whatever you please.
So then, I will give you this lyre, glorious son of Zeus, while I for my part will graze down with wild-roving cattle the pastures on hill and horse-feeding plain: so shall the cows covered by the bulls calve abundantly both males and females. And now there is no need for you,
bargainer though you are, to be furiously angry.”
When Hermes had said this, he held out the lyre: and Phoebus Apollo took it, and readily put his shining whip in Hermes' hand, and ordained him keeper of herds. The son of Maia received it joyfully,
while the glorious son of Leto, the lord far-working Apollo, took the lyre upon his left arm and tried each string with the key.
Awesomely it sounded at the touch of the god, while he sang sweetly to its note. Afterwards they two, the all-glorious sons of Zeus turned the cows back towards the sacred meadow,
but themselves hastened back to snowy Olympus, delighting in the lyre. Then wise Zeus was glad and made them both friends. And Hermes loved the son of Leto continually, even as he does now, when he had given the lyre as token to the Far-shooter,
who played it skilfully, holding it upon his arm. But for himself Hermes found out another cunning art and made himself the pipes whose sound is heard afar.
513
Then the son of Leto said to Hermes: Son of Maia, guide and cunning one, I fear
you may steal from me the lyre and my curved bow together; for you have an office from Zeus, to establish deeds of barter amongst men throughout the fruitful earth. Now if you would only swear me the great oath of the gods, either by nodding your head, or by the potent water of Styx,
you would do all that can please and ease my heart.”
Then Maia's son nodded his head and promised that he would never steal anything of all the Far-shooter possessed, and would never go near his strong house; but Apollo, son of Leto, swore to be fellow and friend to Hermes,
vowing that he would love no other among the immortals, neither god nor man sprung from Zeus, better than Hermes:
and the Father sent forth an eagle in confirmation. And Apollo swear also: Verily I will make you only to be an omen for the immortals and all alike, trusted and honored by my heart. Moreover, I will give you a splendid staff of riches and wealth:
it is of gold, with three branches, and will keep you scatheless, accomplishing every task, whether of words or deeds that are good, which I claim to know through the utterance of Zeus. But as for sooth-saying, noble, heaven-born child, of which you ask, it is not lawful for you to learn it, nor for any other
of the deathless gods: only the mind of Zeus knows that. I am pledged and have vowed and sworn a strong oath that no other of the eternal gods save I should know the wise-hearted counsel of Zeus. And do not you, my brother, bearer of the golden wand, bid me
tell those decrees which all-seeing Zeus intends. As for men, I will harm one and profit another, sorely perplexing the tribes of unenviable men. Whosoever shall come guided by the call and flight of birds of sure omen,
that man shall have advantage through my voice, and I will not deceive him. But whoso shall trust to idly-chattering birds and shall seek to invoke my prophetic art contrary to my will, and to understand more than the eternal gods, I declare that he shall come on an idle journey; yet his gifts I would take.
550
But I will tell you another thing, Son of all-glorious Maia and Zeus who holds the aegis, luck-bringing genius of the gods. There are certain holy ones, sisters born three virgins[*] gifted with wings: their heads are besprinkled with white meal,
and they dwell under a ridge of Parnassus. These are teachers of divination apart from me, the art which I practised while yet a boy following herds, though my father paid no heed to it. From their home they fly now here, now there, feeding on honey-comb and bringing all things to pass.
And when they are inspired through eating yellow honey, they are willing to speak truth; but if they be deprived of the gods' sweet food, then they speak falsely, as they swarm in and out together. These, then, I give you; enquire of them strictly
and delight your heart: and if you should teach any mortal so to do, often will he hear your response if he have good fortune. Take these, Son of Maia, and tend the wild roving, horned oxen and horses and patient mules.”
So he spake. And from heaven father Zeus himself gave confirmation to his words,
and commanded that glorious Hermes should be lord over all birds of omen and grim-eyed lions, and boars with gleaming tusks,

part 1 w 2500
will 6 w 2504
graze 1 w 2509
down 2 w 2513
with 8 w 2517
wild-roving 1 w 2528
cattle 1 w 2534
the 20 w 2537
pastures 1 w 2545
on 31 w 2547
hill 1 w 2551
and 29 w 2554
horse-feeding 1 w 2567
plain 1 w 2572
so 20 w 2575
shall 4 w 2580
the 21 w 2583
cows 2 w 2587
covered 1 w 2594
by 4 w 2596
the 22 w 2599
bulls 1 w 2604
calve 1 w 2609
abundantly 1 w 2619
both 3 w 2623
males 1 w 2628
and 30 w 2631
females 1 w 2638
And 4 w 2642
now 11 w 2645
there 1 w 2650
is 25 w 2652
no 19 w 2654
need 1 w 2658
for 9 w 2661
you 38 w 2664
bargainer 1 w 2674
though 4 w 2680
you 39 w 2683
are 10 w 2686
to 16 w 2689
be 6 w 2691
furiously 1 w 2700
angry 1 w 2705
When 1 w 2711
Hermes 3 w 2717
had 1 w 2720
said 1 w 2724
this 12 w 2728
he 33 w 2731
held 1 w 2735
out 2 w 2738
the 24 w 2741
lyre 3 w 2745
and 31 w 2749
Phoebus 1 w 2756
Apollo 1 w 2762
took 1 w 2766
it 26 w 2768
and 32 w 2772
readily 1 w 2779
put 1 w 2782
his 16 w 2785
shining 1 w 2792
whip 1 w 2796
in 31 w 2798
Hermes 4 w 2804
hand 3 w 2809
and 34 w 2813
ordained 1 w 2821
him 4 w 2824
keeper 1 w 2830
of 22 w 2832
herds 1 w 2837
The 2 w 2841
son 11 w 2844
of 23 w 2846
Maia 3 w 2850
received 1 w 2858
it 27 w 2860
joyfully 1 w 2868
while 2 w 2874
the 25 w 2877
glorious 5 w 2885
son 12 w 2888
of 24 w 2890
Leto 1 w 2894
the 26 w 2898
lord 1 w 2902
far-working 1 w 2913
Apollo 2 w 2919
took 2 w 2924
the 27 w 2927
lyre 4 w 2931
upon 3 w 2935
his 17 w 2938
left 1 w 2942
arm 1 w 2945
and 35 w 2948
tried 1 w 2953
each 3 w 2957
string 1 w 2963
with 9 w 2967
the 28 w 2970
key 1 w 2973
Awesomely 1 w 2983
it 29 w 2985
sounded 1 w 2992
at 25 w 2994
the 29 w 2997
touch 1 w 3002
of 25 w 3004
the 30 w 3007
god 7 w 3010
while 3 w 3016
he 44 w 3018
sang 1 w 3022
sweetly 1 w 3029
to 21 w 3031
its 2 w 3034
note 1 w 3038
Afterwards 1 w 3049
they 2 w 3053
two 1 w 3056
the 32 w 3060
all-glorious 1 w 3072
sons 1 w 3076
of 26 w 3078
Zeus 7 w 3082
turned 1 w 3088
the 33 w 3091
cows 3 w 3095
back 1 w 3099
towards 1 w 3106
the 34 w 3109
sacred 1 w 3115
meadow 1 w 3121
but 4 w 3125
themselves 1 w 3135
hastened 1 w 3143
back 2 w 3147
to 23 w 3149
snowy 1 w 3154
Olympus 2 w 3161
delighting 1 w 3172
in 36 w 3174
the 36 w 3177
lyre 5 w 3181
Then 2 w 3186
wise 2 w 3190
Zeus 8 w 3194
was 1 w 3197
glad 1 w 3201
and 36 w 3204
made 1 w 3208
them 2 w 3212
both 4 w 3216
friends 1 w 3223
And 5 w 3227
Hermes 5 w 3233
loved 1 w 3238
the 38 w 3241
son 14 w 3244
of 27 w 3246
Leto 2 w 3250
continually 1 w 3261
even 2 w 3266
as 17 w 3268
he 54 w 3270
does 1 w 3274
now 13 w 3277
when 1 w 3282
he 56 w 3284
had 2 w 3287
given 2 w 3292
the 39 w 3295
lyre 6 w 3299
as 18 w 3301
token 1 w 3306
to 26 w 3308
the 40 w 3311
Far-shooter 1 w 3322
who 3 w 3326
played 2 w 3332
it 31 w 3334
skilfully 1 w 3343
holding 1 w 3351
it 32 w 3353
upon 4 w 3357
his 18 w 3360
arm 2 w 3363
But 4 w 3367
for 10 w 3370
himself 1 w 3377
Hermes 6 w 3383
found 1 w 3388
out 3 w 3391
another 1 w 3398
cunning 2 w 3405
art 6 w 3408
and 37 w 3411
made 2 w 3415
himself 2 w 3422
the 42 w 3425

whose 1 w 3435
sound 4 w 3440
is 31 w 3442
heard 1 w 3447
afar 1 w 3451
Then 3 w 3456
the 43 w 3459
son 15 w 3462
of 28 w 3464
Leto 3 w 3468
said 2 w 3472
to 28 w 3474
Hermes 7 w 3480
Son 1 w 3485
of 29 w 3487

and 39 w 3543
my 5 w 3545

together 1 w 3562
for 11 w 3566
you 41 w 3569
have 6 w 3573
an 60 w 3575

from 8 w 3585
Zeus 9 w 3589
to 30 w 3592

deeds 1 w 3606
of 31 w 3608

Now 3 w 3654

by 5 w 3705
nodding 1 w 3712

please 3 w 3772
and 40 w 3775

heart 3 w 3786
Then 4 w 3792
Maia 5 w 3796

nodded 1 w 3807
his 19 w 3810

As 1 w 4772
