so far roamed Leto in travail with the god who shoots afar, to see if any land would be willing to make a dwelling for her son.
47
But they greatly trembled and feared, and none, not even the richest of them, dared receive Phoebus,
until queenly Leto set foot on Delos and uttered winged words and asked her:
Delos, if you would be willing to be the abode of my son Phoebus Apollo and make him a rich temple —; for no other will touch you, as you will find: and I think you will never be rich in oxen and sheep,
nor bear vintage nor yet produce plants abundantly. But if you have the temple of far-shooting Apollo, all men will bring you hecatombs and gather here, and incessant savour of rich sacrifice will always arise, and you will feed those who dwell in you
from the hand of strangers; for truly your own soil is not rich.”
So spake Leto. And Delos rejoiced and answered and said: Leto, most glorious daughter of great Coeus, joyfully would I receive your child the far-shooting lord; for it is all too true that I am ill-spoken of
among men, whereas thus I should become very greatly honored. But this saying I fear, and I will not hide it from you, Leto. They say that Apollo will be one that is very haughty and will greatly lord it among gods and men all over the fruitful earth.
Therefore, I greatly fear in heart and spirit that as soon as he sees the light of the sun, he will scorn this island for truly I have but a hard, rocky soil and overturn me and thrust me down with his feet in the depths of the sea; then will the great ocean wash deep above my head for ever,
and he will go to another land such as will please him, there to make his temple and wooded groves. So many-footed creatures of the sea will make their lairs in me and black seals their dwellings undisturbed, because I lack people. Yet if you will but dare to swear a great oath, goddess,
that here first he will build a glorious temple to be an oracle for men, then let him afterwards
make temples and wooded groves amongst all men; for surely he will be greatly renowned.
So said Delos. And Leto swear the great oath of the gods: Now hear this, Earth and wide Heaven above,
and dropping water of Styx (this is the strongest and most awful oath for the blessed gods), surely Phoebus shall have here his fragrant altar and precinct, and you he shall honor above all.”
89
Now when Leto had sworn and ended her oath,
Delos was very glad at the birth of the far-shooting lord. But Leto was racked nine days and nine nights with pangs beyond wont.
And there were with her all the chiefest of the goddesses, Dione and Rhea and Ichnaea and Themis and loud-moaning Amphitrite and the other deathless goddesses save white-armed Hera, who sat in the halls of cloud-gathering Zeus. Only Eilithyia, goddess of sore travail, had not heard of Leto's trouble, for she sat on the top of Olympus beneath golden clouds by white-armed Hera's
contriving, who kept her close through envy, because Leto with the lovely tresses was soon to bear a son faultless and strong.
But the goddesses sent out Iris from the well-set isle to bring Eilithyia, promising her a great necklace strung with golden threads, nine cubits long.
And they bade Iris call her aside from white-armed Hera, lest she might afterwards turn her from coming with her words. When swift Iris, fleet of foot as the wind, had heard all this, she set to run; and quickly finishing all the distance she came to the home of the gods, sheer Olympus,
and forthwith called Eilithyia out from the hall to the door and spoke winged words to her, telling her all as the goddesses who dwell on Olympus had bidden her. So she moved the heart of Eilithyia in her dear breast; and they went their way, like shy wild-doves in their going.
And as soon as Eilithyia the goddess of sore travail set foot on Delos, the pains of birth seized Leto, and she longed to bring forth; so she cast her arms about a palm tree and kneeled on the soft meadow while the earth laughed for joy beneath. Then the child leaped forth to the light, and all the goddesses raised a cry.
Straightway, great Phoebus, the goddesses washed you purely and cleanly with sweet water, and swathed you in a white garment of fine texture, new-woven, and fastened a golden band about you.
Now Leto did not give Apollo, bearer of the golden blade, her breast; but Themis duly poured nectar and ambrosia
with her divine hands: and Leto was glad because she had borne a strong son and an archer. But as soon as you had tasted that divine heavenly food, O Phoebus, you could no longer then be held by golden cords nor confined with bands, but all their ends were undone.
Forth-with Phoebus Apollo spoke out among the deathless goddesses:
131
The lyre and the curved bow shall ever be dear to me, and I will declare to men the unfailing will of Zeus.”
So said Phoebus, the long-haired god who shoots afar and began to walk upon the wide-pathed earth;
and all the goddesses were amazed at him. Then with gold all Delos [was laden, beholding the child of Zeus and Leto, for joy because the god chose her above the islands and shore to make his dwelling in her: and she loved him yet more in her heart.] blossomed as does a mountain-top with woodland flowers.
And you, O lord Apollo, god of the silver bow, shooting afar, now walked on craggy Cynthus, and now kept wandering about the islands and the people in them. Many are your temples and wooded groves, and all peaks and towering bluffs
of lofty mountains and rivers flowing to the sea are dear to you, Phoebus, yet in Delos do you most delight your heart; for there the long robed Ionians gather in your honor with their children and shy wives: with boxing and dancing and song,
mindful, they delight you so often as they hold their gathering. A man would say that they were deathless and unageing if he should then come upon the Ionians so met together. For he would see the graces of them all, and would be pleased in heart gazing at the men and well-girded women
with their swift ships and great wealth. And there is this great wonder besides and its renown shall never perish —, the girls of Delos, hand-maidens of the Far-shooter; for when they have praised Apollo first, and also Leto and Artemis who delights in arrows,
they sing a strain telling of men and women of past days, and charm the tribes of men. Also they can imitate the tongues of all men and their clattering speech: each would say that he himself were singing, so close to truth is their sweet song.
And now may Apollo be favorable and Artemis; and farewell all you maidens. Remember me in after time whenever any one of men on earth, a stranger who has seen and suffered much, comes here and asks of you: Whom think ye, girls, is the sweetest singer that comes here, and in whom do you most delight?”
Then answer, each and all, with one voice: He is a blind man, and dwells in rocky Chios: his lays are evermore supreme.” As for me, I will carry your renown as far as I roam over the earth

nine 3 w 2583
cubits 1 w 2589
long 1 w 2593
And 4 w 2597
they 2 w 2601
bade 1 w 2605
Iris 2 w 2609
call 1 w 2613
her 19 w 2616
aside 1 w 2621
from 4 w 2625
white-armed 3 w 2636
Hera 3 w 2640
lest 1 w 2645
she 3 w 2648
might 1 w 2653
afterwards 2 w 2663
turn 2 w 2667
her 20 w 2670
from 5 w 2674
coming 1 w 2680
with 7 w 2684
her 21 w 2687
words 2 w 2692
When 1 w 2697
swift 1 w 2702
Iris 3 w 2706
fleet 1 w 2712
of 19 w 2714
foot 3 w 2718
as 13 w 2720
the 42 w 2723
wind 1 w 2727
had 3 w 2731
heard 2 w 2736
all 11 w 2739
this 5 w 2743
she 4 w 2747
set 3 w 2750
to 24 w 2752
run 2 w 2755
and 40 w 2759
quickly 1 w 2766
finishing 1 w 2775
all 12 w 2778
the 43 w 2781
distance 1 w 2789
she 5 w 2792
came 1 w 2796
to 25 w 2798
the 44 w 2801
home 1 w 2805
of 20 w 2807
the 45 w 2810
gods 4 w 2814
sheer 1 w 2820
Olympus 2 w 2827
and 41 w 2831
forthwith 1 w 2840
called 1 w 2846
Eilithyia 3 w 2855
out 2 w 2858
from 6 w 2862
the 46 w 2865
hall 4 w 2869
to 26 w 2871
the 47 w 2874
door 1 w 2878
and 42 w 2881
spoke 2 w 2886
winged 2 w 2892
words 3 w 2897
to 27 w 2899
her 22 w 2902
telling 1 w 2910
her 23 w 2913
all 15 w 2916
as 14 w 2918
the 48 w 2921
goddesses 4 w 2930
who 5 w 2933
dwell 4 w 2938
on 22 w 2940
Olympus 3 w 2947
had 4 w 2950
bidden 1 w 2956
her 24 w 2959
So 4 w 2962
she 7 w 2965
moved 1 w 2970
the 49 w 2973
heart 2 w 2978
of 21 w 2980
Eilithyia 4 w 2989
in 38 w 2991
her 25 w 2994
dear 1 w 2998
breast 1 w 3004
and 43 w 3008
they 3 w 3012
went 1 w 3016
their 3 w 3021
way 2 w 3024
like 1 w 3029
shy 1 w 3032
wild-doves 1 w 3042
in 39 w 3044
their 4 w 3049
going 1 w 3054
And 5 w 3058
as 16 w 3060
soon 3 w 3064
as 17 w 3066
Eilithyia 5 w 3075
the 53 w 3078
goddess 7 w 3085
of 22 w 3087
sore 2 w 3091
travail 3 w 3098
set 4 w 3101
foot 4 w 3105
on 24 w 3107
Delos 6 w 3112
the 54 w 3116
pains 1 w 3121
of 23 w 3123
birth 2 w 3128
seized 1 w 3134
Leto 11 w 3138
and 44 w 3142
she 8 w 3145
longed 1 w 3151
to 29 w 3153
bring 3 w 3158
forth 2 w 3163
so 12 w 3166
she 9 w 3169
cast 1 w 3173
her 26 w 3176
arms 1 w 3180
about 1 w 3185
a 239 w 3186
palm 1 w 3190
tree 1 w 3194
and 45 w 3197
kneeled 1 w 3204
on 26 w 3206
the 55 w 3209
soft 1 w 3213
meadow 1 w 3219
while 1 w 3224
the 56 w 3227
earth 2 w 3232
laughed 1 w 3239
for 14 w 3242
joy 2 w 3245
beneath 2 w 3252
Then 1 w 3257
the 57 w 3260
child 2 w 3265
leaped 1 w 3271
forth 3 w 3276
to 30 w 3278
the 58 w 3281
light 2 w 3286
and 46 w 3290
all 16 w 3293
the 59 w 3296
goddesses 5 w 3305
raised 1 w 3311
a 250 w 3312
cry 1 w 3315
Straightway 1 w 3327
great 11 w 3333
Phoebus 4 w 3340
the 60 w 3344
goddesses 6 w 3353
washed 1 w 3359
you 14 w 3362
purely 1 w 3368
and 47 w 3371
cleanly 1 w 3378
with 9 w 3382
sweet 1 w 3387
water 2 w 3392
and 48 w 3396
swathed 1 w 3403
you 15 w 3406
in 43 w 3408
a 260 w 3409
white 4 w 3414
garment 1 w 3421
of 25 w 3423
fine 1 w 3427
texture 1 w 3434
new-woven 1 w 3444
and 49 w 3448
fastened 1 w 3456
a 264 w 3457
golden 3 w 3463
band 1 w 3467
about 2 w 3472
you 16 w 3475
Now 3 w 3479
Leto 12 w 3483
did 1 w 3486
not 6 w 3489
give 1 w 3493
Apollo 4 w 3499
bearer 1 w 3506
of 26 w 3508
the 62 w 3511
golden 4 w 3517
blade 1 w 3522
her 27 w 3526
breast 2 w 3532
but 3 w 3536
Themis 2 w 3542
duly 1 w 3546
poured 1 w 3552
nectar 1 w 3558
and 51 w 3561
ambrosia 1 w 3569
with 10 w 3573
her 28 w 3576
divine 1 w 3582
hands 1 w 3587
and 53 w 3591
Leto 13 w 3595
was 6 w 3598
glad 2 w 3602
because 3 w 3609
she 11 w 3612
had 5 w 3615
borne 1 w 3620
a 280 w 3621
strong 3 w 3627
son 4 w 3630
and 54 w 3633
an 70 w 3635
archer 1 w 3641
But 6 w 3645
as 23 w 3647
soon 4 w 3651
as 24 w 3653
you 17 w 3656
had 6 w 3659
tasted 1 w 3665
that 6 w 3669
divine 2 w 3675
heavenly 1 w 3683
food 1 w 3687
O 5 w 3689
Phoebus 5 w 3696
you 18 w 3700
could 1 w 3705
no 14 w 3707
longer 1 w 3713
then 3 w 3717
be 19 w 3719
held 1 w 3723
by 2 w 3725
golden 5 w 3731
cords 1 w 3736
nor 5 w 3739
confined 1 w 3747
with 11 w 3751
bands 1 w 3756
but 4 w 3760
all 17 w 3763
their 5 w 3768
ends 1 w 3772
were 3 w 3776
undone 1 w 3782
Forth-with 1 w 3793
Phoebus 6 w 3800
Apollo 5 w 3806
spoke 3 w 3811
out 5 w 3814
among 4 w 3819
the 65 w 3822
deathless 2 w 3831
goddesses 7 w 3840
The 6 w 3845
lyre 1 w 3849
and 56 w 3852
the 66 w 3855
curved 1 w 3861
bow 1 w 3864
shall 3 w 3869
ever 3 w 3873
be 20 w 3875
dear 2 w 3879
to 33 w 3881
me 18 w 3883
and 57 w 3887
I 14 w 3888
will 20 w 3892
declare 1 w 3899
to 34 w 3901
men 7 w 3904
the 67 w 3907
unfailing 1 w 3916
will 21 w 3920
of 27 w 3922
Zeus 2 w 3926
So 5 w 3930
said 3 w 3934
Phoebus 7 w 3941
the 68 w 3945
long-haired 1 w 3956
god 16 w 3959
who 6 w 3962
shoots 2 w 3968
afar 2 w 3972
and 58 w 3975
began 1 w 3980
to 35 w 3982
walk 1 w 3986
upon 1 w 3990
the 69 w 3993
wide-pathed 1 w 4004
earth 3 w 4009
and 59 w 4013
all 19 w 4016
the 71 w 4019
goddesses 8 w 4028
were 4 w 4032
amazed 1 w 4038
at 37 w 4040
him 4 w 4043
Then 2 w 4048
with 13 w 4052
gold 6 w 4056
all 20 w 4059
Delos 7 w 4064
was 7 w 4068
laden 1 w 4073
beholding 1 w 4083
the 72 w 4086
child 3 w 4091
of 28 w 4093
Zeus 3 w 4097
and 60 w 4100
Leto 14 w 4104
for 16 w 4108
joy 3 w 4111
because 4 w 4118
the 73 w 4121
god 18 w 4124
chose 1 w 4129
her 30 w 4132
above 4 w 4137
the 74 w 4140
islands 1 w 4147
and 62 w 4150
shore 1 w 4155
to 37 w 4157
make 6 w 4161
his 9 w 4164
dwelling 3 w 4172
in 51 w 4174
her 31 w 4177
and 63 w 4181
she 12 w 4184
loved 1 w 4189
him 5 w 4192
yet 2 w 4195
more 1 w 4199
in 52 w 4201
her 32 w 4204
heart 3 w 4209
blossomed 1 w 4220
as 27 w 4222
does 1 w 4226
a 326 w 4227
mountain-top 1 w 4239
with 14 w 4243
woodland 1 w 4251
flowers 1 w 4258
And 6 w 4262
you 19 w 4265
O 6 w 4267
lord 4 w 4271
Apollo 6 w 4277
god 19 w 4281
of 29 w 4283
the 75 w 4286
silver 1 w 4292
bow 2 w 4295
shooting 4 w 4304
afar 3 w 4308
now 2 w 4312
walked 1 w 4318
on 36 w 4320
craggy 1 w 4326
Cynthus 1 w 4333
and 65 w 4337
now 3 w 4340
kept 2 w 4344
wandering 1 w 4353
about 3 w 4358
the 76 w 4361
islands 2 w 4368
and 68 w 4371
the 77 w 4374
people 2 w 4380
in 56 w 4382
them 2 w 4386
Many 1 w 4391
are 6 w 4394
your 3 w 4398
temples 2 w 4405
and 69 w 4408
wooded 3 w 4414
groves 3 w 4420
and 70 w 4424
all 21 w 4427
peaks 1 w 4432
and 71 w 4435
towering 1 w 4443
bluffs 1 w 4449
of 30 w 4451
lofty 1 w 4456
mountains 1 w 4465
and 72 w 4468
rivers 1 w 4474
flowing 1 w 4481
to 40 w 4483
the 79 w 4486

are 7 w 4492
dear 3 w 4496
to 41 w 4498
you 21 w 4501
Phoebus 8 w 4509
yet 3 w 4513
in 60 w 4515
Delos 8 w 4520
do 7 w 4522
you 22 w 4525
most 3 w 4529
delight 1 w 4536
your 4 w 4540
heart 4 w 4545
for 17 w 4549
there 3 w 4554
the 81 w 4557

your 5 w 4585

with 15 w 4594
their 6 w 4599

they 4 w 4659

you 25 w 4669
so 18 w 4671

as 28 w 4678
they 5 w 4682

their 7 w 4691

A 14 w 4702

that 7 w 4717
they 6 w 4721

deathless 3 w 4734
and 76 w 4737
unageing 1 w 4745
if 7 w 4747
he 154 w 4749
should 2 w 4755
then 4 w 4759
come 2 w 4763
upon 2 w 4767
the 90 w 4770

so 19 w 4779

together 1 w 4790
For 2 w 4794
he 158 w 4796

all 22 w 4822
and 77 w 4826
would 6 w 4831

praised 1 w 5044
Apollo 7 w 5050
first 2 w 5055
and 82 w 5059
also 1 w 5063
Leto 15 w 5067

Also 1 w 5170
they 9 w 5174
