past Cruni it went and Chalcis and past Dyme and fair Elis, where the Epei rule. And at the time when she was making for Pherae, exulting in the breeze from Zeus, there appeared to them below the clouds the steep mountain of Ithaca, and Dulichium and Same and wooded Zacynthus.
But when they were passed by all the coast of Peloponnesus, then, towards Crisa, that vast gulf began to heave in sight which through all its length cuts off the rich isle of Pelops. There came on them a strong, clear west-wind by ordinance of Zeus and blew from heaven vehemently, that with all speed
the ship might finish coursing over the briny water of the sea. So they began again to voyage back towards the dawn and the sun: and the lord Apollo, son of Zeus, led them on until they reached far-seen Crisa, land of vines, and into haven: there the sea-coursing ship grounded on the sands.
Then, like a star at noonday, the lord, far-working Apollo, leaped from the ship: flashes of fire flew from him thick and their brightness reached to heaven. He entered into his shrine between priceless tripods,
444
and there made a flame to flare up bright, showing forth the splendor of his shafts, so that their radiance
filled all Crisa, and the wives and well-girded daughters of the Crisaeans raised a cry at that outburst of Phoebus; for he cast great fear upon them all. From his shrine he sprang forth again, swift as a thought, to speed again to the ship, bearing the form of a man, brisk and sturdy,
in the prime of his youth, while his broad shoulders were covered with his hair: and he spoke to the Cretans, uttering winged words:
Strangers, who are you? Whence come you sailing along the paths of the sea? Are you for traffic, or do you wander at random over the sea as pirates do who put
their own lives to hazard and bring mischief to men of foreign parts as they roam? Why rest you so and are afraid, and do not go ashore nor stow the gear of your black ship? For that is the custom of men who live by bread, whenever they come to land in their dark ships from the main,
spent with toil: at once desire for sweet food catches them about the heart.”
So speaking, he put courage in their hearts, and the master of the Cretans answered him and said: Stranger though you are nothing like mortal men
in shape or stature, but are as the deathless gods hail and all happiness to you, and may the gods give you good. Now tell me truly that I may surely know it: what country is this, and what land, and what men live herein? As for us, with thoughts set otherwards, we were sailing over the great sea
to Pylos from Crete (for from there we declare that we are sprung), but now are come on shipboard to this place by no means willingly another way and other paths and gladly would we return. But one of the deathless gods brought us here against our will.”
Then far-working Apollo answered them and said:
Strangers who once dwelt about wooded Cnossos but now shall return no more each to his loved city and fair house and dear wife; here shall you keep my rich temple that is honored by many men.
I am the son of Zeus; Apollo is my name: but you I brought here over the wide gulf of the sea, meaning you no hurt; nay, here you shall keep my rich temple that is greatly honored among men, and you shall know the plans of the deathless gods, and by their will
you shall be honored continually for all time. And now come, make haste and do as I say. First loose the sheets and lower the sail, and then draw the swift ship up upon the land. Take out your goods and the gear of the straight ship,
and make an altar upon the beach of the sea: light fire upon it and make an offering of white meal. Next, stand side by side around the altar and pray:
493
and in as much as at the first on the hazy sea I sprang upon the swift ship in the form of a dolphin,
pray to me as Apollo Delphinius; also the altar itself shall be called Delphinius and overlooking[*] for ever. Afterwards, sup beside your dark ship and pour an offering to the blessed gods who dwell on Olympus. But when you have put away craving for sweet food,
come with me singing the hymn Ie Paean (Hail, Healer!), until you come to the place where you shall keep my rich temple.”
So said Apollo. And they readily harkened to him and obeyed him. First they unfastened the sheets and let down the sail and lowered the mast by the forestays upon the mast-rest.
Then, landing upon the beach of the sea, they hauled up the ship from the water to dry land and fixed long stays under it. Also they made an altar upon the beach of the sea, and when they had lit a fire, made an offering of white meal,
and prayed standing around the altar as Apollo had bidden them. Then they took their meal by the swift, black ship, and poured an offering to the blessed gods who dwell on Olympus. And when they had put away craving for drink and food, they started out with the lord Apollo, the son of Zeus, to lead them,
holding a lyre in his hands, and playing sweetly as he stepped high and featly. So the Cretans followed him to Pytho, marching in time as they chanted the Ie Paean after the manner of the Cretan paean-singers and of those in whose hearts the heavenly Muse has put sweet-voiced song.
With tireless feet they approached the ridge and straightway came to Parnassus and the lovely place where they were to dwell honored by many men. There Apollo brought them and showed them his most holy sanctuary and rich temple.
But their spirit was stirred in their dear breasts,
and the master of the Cretans asked him, saying:
Lord, since you have brought us here far from our dear ones and our fatherland, for so it seemed good to your heart,—tell us now how we shall live. That we would know of you. This land is not to be desired either for vineyards or for pastures
so that we can live well thereon and also minister to men.”
531
Then Apollo, the son of Zeus, smiled upon them and said: Foolish mortals and poor drudges are you, that you seek cares and hard toils and straits! Easily will I tell you a word and set it in your hearts.
Though each one of you with knife in hand should slaughter sheep continually, yet would you always have abundant store, even all that the glorious tribes of men bring here for me. But guard you my temple and receive the tribes of men that gather to this place,
and especially show mortal men my will, and do you keep righteousness in your heart.
But if any shall be disobedient and pay no heed to my warning,
or if there shall be any idle word or deed and outrage as is common among mortal men, then other men shall be your masters and with a strong hand shall make you subject for ever. All has been told you: do you keep it in your heart.”
And so, farewell, son of Zeus and Leto; but I will remember you and another hymn also.

started 1 w 4062
out 6 w 4065
with 6 w 4069
the 113 w 4072
lord 3 w 4076
Apollo 9 w 4082
the 114 w 4086
son 3 w 4089
of 36 w 4091
Zeus 6 w 4095
to 31 w 4098
lead 1 w 4102
them 8 w 4106
holding 1 w 4114
a 345 w 4115
lyre 1 w 4119
in 62 w 4121
his 11 w 4124
hands 1 w 4129
and 63 w 4133
playing 1 w 4140
sweetly 1 w 4147
as 25 w 4149
he 154 w 4151
stepped 1 w 4158
high 1 w 4162
and 64 w 4165
featly 1 w 4171
So 4 w 4174
the 116 w 4177
Cretans 3 w 4184
followed 1 w 4192
him 5 w 4195
to 32 w 4197
Pytho 1 w 4202
marching 1 w 4211
in 65 w 4213
time 3 w 4217
as 26 w 4219
they 14 w 4223
chanted 1 w 4230
the 118 w 4233
Ie 2 w 4235
Paean 2 w 4240
after 1 w 4245
the 119 w 4248
manner 1 w 4254
of 37 w 4256
the 120 w 4259
Cretan 4 w 4265
paean-singers 1 w 4278
and 65 w 4281
of 38 w 4283
those 1 w 4288
in 67 w 4290
whose 1 w 4295
hearts 2 w 4301
the 121 w 4304

sweet-voiced 1 w 4334
song 1 w 4338
With 1 w 4343
tireless 1 w 4351
feet 1 w 4355
they 15 w 4359
approached 1 w 4369
the 123 w 4372
ridge 1 w 4377
and 66 w 4380
straightway 1 w 4391
came 2 w 4395
to 33 w 4397
Parnassus 1 w 4406
and 67 w 4409
the 124 w 4412
lovely 1 w 4418
place 3 w 4423
where 3 w 4428
they 16 w 4432
were 7 w 4436
to 34 w 4438
dwell 3 w 4443
honored 4 w 4450
by 10 w 4452
many 2 w 4456
men 8 w 4459
There 2 w 4465
Apollo 10 w 4471
brought 3 w 4478
them 9 w 4482
and 68 w 4485
showed 1 w 4491
them 10 w 4495
his 12 w 4498
most 1 w 4502
holy 1 w 4506
sanctuary 1 w 4515
and 69 w 4518
rich 5 w 4522
temple 4 w 4528
But 4 w 4532
their 8 w 4537
spirit 1 w 4543
was 2 w 4546
stirred 1 w 4553
in 68 w 4555
their 9 w 4560
dear 2 w 4564
breasts 1 w 4571
and 70 w 4575
the 130 w 4578
master 2 w 4584
of 39 w 4586
the 131 w 4589
Cretans 4 w 4596
asked 1 w 4601
him 6 w 4604
saying 1 w 4611
Lord 1 w 4617
since 1 w 4623
you 22 w 4626
have 3 w 4630
brought 4 w 4637
us 22 w 4639
here 15 w 4643
far 4 w 4646
from 10 w 4650
our 10 w 4653
dear 3 w 4657
ones 1 w 4661
and 71 w 4664
our 11 w 4667
fatherland 1 w 4677
for 17 w 4682
so 10 w 4684
it 21 w 4686
seemed 1 w 4692
good 3 w 4696
to 35 w 4698
your 4 w 4702
heart 4 w 4707
tell 2 w 4713
us 23 w 4715
now 6 w 4718
how 3 w 4721
we 27 w 4723
shall 8 w 4728
live 4 w 4732
That 1 w 4737
we 28 w 4739
would 2 w 4744
know 3 w 4748
of 40 w 4750
you 24 w 4753
This 1 w 4758
land 8 w 4762
is 31 w 4764
not 4 w 4767
to 36 w 4769
be 13 w 4771
desired 1 w 4778
either 1 w 4784
for 18 w 4787
vineyards 1 w 4796
or 39 w 4798
for 19 w 4801
pastures 1 w 4809
so 11 w 4811
that 10 w 4815
we 29 w 4817
can 1 w 4820
live 5 w 4824
well 5 w 4828
thereon 1 w 4835
and 74 w 4838
also 2 w 4842
minister 1 w 4850
to 37 w 4852
men 9 w 4855
Then 5 w 4861
Apollo 11 w 4867
the 135 w 4871
son 5 w 4874
of 41 w 4876
Zeus 7 w 4880
smiled 1 w 4887
upon 9 w 4891
them 11 w 4895
and 75 w 4898
said 4 w 4902
Foolish 1 w 4911
mortals 1 w 4918
and 76 w 4921
poor 1 w 4925
drudges 1 w 4932
are 11 w 4935
you 25 w 4938
that 11 w 4943
you 26 w 4946
seek 1 w 4950

Easily 1 w 4984
will 4 w 4988
I 9 w 4989
tell 3 w 4993
you 27 w 4996
a 418 w 4997
word 2 w 5001
and 79 w 5004
set 2 w 5007
it 24 w 5009
in 73 w 5011
your 5 w 5015
hearts 3 w 5021
Though 1 w 5028
each 7 w 5032

you 29 w 5040
with 7 w 5044
knife 1 w 5049
in 74 w 5051
hand 2 w 5055
should 2 w 5061
slaughter 1 w 5070

continually 2 w 5086
yet 1 w 5090
would 3 w 5095
you 30 w 5098
always 1 w 5104
have 4 w 5108
abundant 1 w 5116
store 1 w 5121
even 1 w 5126

But 5 w 5173
guard 1 w 5178
you 31 w 5181

and 81 w 5192
receive 1 w 5199
the 138 w 5202
tribes 2 w 5208
of 44 w 5210
men 11 w 5213
that 13 w 5217

But 6 w 5308
if 7 w 5310

my 7 w 5347
warning 1 w 5354
or 48 w 5357
if 8 w 5359

All 1 w 5501
