δεινός

δεινός -ή, -όν [δϝι-, δείδοικα.] 1 Causing, or such as to cause, fear, fearful, terrible, aweinspiring, dread, dire Il. 1.200, Il. 2.321, Il. 5.739, Il. 8.135, Il. 11.418, etc.: Od. 3.145, Od. 5.52, Od. 11.157, Od. 12.94, Od. 22.405, etc. With complementary infin.: δεινὸν γένος βασιλήϊόν ἐστι κτείνειν Od. 16.401. Of noises, troubling the hearers, terrible, dreadful: καναχήν Il. 16.104. Cf. Il. 1.49, Il. 23.688. Of something said, calculated to trouble the hearer, out of place, unseemly: ἔπος Od. 8.409, Od. 21.169. 2 In neut. δεινόν as adv., so as to cause fear, fearfully, terribly, dreadfully: δ. δερκόμενοι Il. 3.342. Cf. Il. 3.337, Il. 4.420, Il. 6.182, Il. 8.133, Il. 11.10, etc.: κῦμα δ. ἐπεσσύμενον Od. 5.314. Cf. ἵππουρις

ἵππουρις [ἵππος + οὐρή.] Bearing a horse's tail as a crest. Of helmets Il. 6.495, Il. 19.382, Il. 3.337=Il. 11.42=Il. 15.481=Il. 16.138:=Od. 22.124.

λόφος

λόφος -ου, ὁ 1 The neck Il. 10.573. Of horses Il. 23.508. 2 A crest or plume on a helmet: δεινὸν λόφος καθύπερθεν ἔνευεν Il. 3.337=Il. 11.42=Il. 15.481=Il. 16.138, κόρυθος φάλον ἤλασεν ὑπὸ λόφον αὐτόν (just at the base of it) Il. 13.615. Cf. Il. 6.469, Il. 15.537, Il. 18.612, Il. 19.383=Il. 22.316 : Od. 22.124. 3 The crest or summit of a hill Od. 11.596. An eminence or ridge : ὅθι Ἕρμαιος λ. ἐστίν Od. 16.471.

νεύω

νεύω (ἀνα-, ἐπι-, κατα-) 1 To make a quick inclination of the head, bend the head : ψαῦον κόρυθες νευόντων (genit. with κόρυθες, as the men bent their heads) Il. 13.133 = Il. 16.217. Of the nodding of the crest of a helmet Il. 6.470, Il. 3.337 = Il. 11.42 = Il. 15.481 = Il. 16.138 : = Od. 22.124. To bend (the head). Of persons on whom destruction has come : νεύοιεν κεφαλάς δεδμημένοι Od. 18.237. 2 To nod in token or sanction of a promise, promise, undertake, vouchsafe : ἐπʼ ὀφρύσι νεῦσεν (with his brows, bending the head forward) Il. 1.528 = Il. 17.209. With infin. : νεῦσέ οἱ λαὸον ἔμμεναι Il. 8.246. 3 To convey an order or make a sign by a motion of the head : νεῦσʼ αἴας φοίνικι Il. 9.223 : ἐπʼ ὀφρύσι νεῦσεν Od. 16.164. Cf.
