πέτρη -ης, ἡ [cf. πέτρος.] 1 A rock or cliff on land or in or bordering upon the sea : πέτρης ἐκ γλαφυρῆς Il. 2.88. Cf. Il. 2.617, Il. 4.107, Il. 9.15, Il. 13.137, Il. 24.614, etc. : πέτρης ἐκ πείσματα δήσας Od. 10.96. Cf. Od. 3.293, Od. 4.501, Od. 5.443, Od. 8.508, Od. 12.59, 241, Od. 13.408, Od. 23.327, etc. 2 The rock forming the walls of a cave : περὶ δʼ ἴαχε πέτρη Od. 9.395, ὁρμαθοῦ ἐκ πέτρης (attached at each end to the walls) Od. 24.8. 3 A large detached mass of stone, a rock : κατερχομένης ὑπὸ πέτρης Od. 9.484 = 541.
