Have no fears as to my caution. The bow shall pass
into no hands but yours and mine. Give it to me, and may good luck accompany it!
Philoctetes
There, take it boy. And humble yourself before the jealous gods, so that the bow may not prove baneful for you, as it did for me and for him who owned it before me.
Neoptolemus
O gods, grant this to the two of us! And grant us a voyage
prosperous and unimpeded, to whatever goal the god may deem right and that our mission provides!
782
Philoctetes
Futile, I fear, are your prayers, boy. Look, once again the dark blood is oozing drop by drop from deep in the wound, and I look for worse to come.
Ah, me, oh, oh! Cursed foot, what torment you cause me! It creeps on me, it is coming near! Ah, misery! Now you know my condition. Do not flee, no!
Oh, alas! Odysseus of Cephallene, once my friend, would that this anguish might stick to you, and pierce your chest! Ah, me! Ah, me! O you twin marshalls, Agamemnon, and you, Menelaus, may your flesh instead of mine
nourish this plague, and for as long! Oh, Ah, me! O Death, Death, though I am always summoning you day after day, why do you never come? O son, noble youth, seize me,
burn me up, true friend, in that fire famed as Lemnian. I, too, once deemed it lawful to do that very service for the son of Zeus, in return for which I received these same arms, which are now in your keeping. What do you say, boy, what do you say?
Why this silence? Where are your thoughts, son?
806
Neoptolemus
My heart has long been aching for your load of pain.
Philoctetes
Stop, then, and take courage; this visitor comes sharply, but goes quickly. Yet, I beg you, do not leave me alone.
Neoptolemus
Take heart, we will remain.
Philoctetes
Will you?
Neoptolemus
Be sure of it.
Philoctetes
Indeed, I do not think it right to put you under oath.
Neoptolemus
Rest assured; it is not lawful for me to leave without you.
Philoctetes
Give me your hand in pledge!
Neoptolemus
I give itto stay.
Philoctetes
Now take me there, over there!
Neoptolemus
Where do you mean?
Philoctetes
Up there!
Neoptolemus
What is this new delirium? Why do you gaze at the dome above us?
Philoctetes
Let me go, let me go!
Neoptolemus
Where will you go, if I do so?
Philoctetes
Let me go, I say!
Neoptolemus
I will not.
Philoctetes
You will kill me, if you touch me further.
Neoptolemus
There, then, I release youif in fact you believe it is for the better.

Where 1 w 1160
are 3 w 1163
your 7 w 1167

long 2 w 1205
been 1 w 1209

take 2 w 1261
courage 1 w 1268
this 5 w 1273
visitor 1 w 1280
comes 1 w 1285

Yet 1 w 1311
I 7 w 1313
beg 1 w 1316
you 20 w 1319
do 5 w 1322
not 3 w 1325
leave 1 w 1330
me 20 w 1332
alone 1 w 1337
Neoptolemus 3 w 1349
Take 1 w 1353
heart 2 w 1358
we 1 w 1361
will 1 w 1365
remain 1 w 1371
Philoctetes 4 w 1383
Will 1 w 1387
you 21 w 1390
Neoptolemus 4 w 1402
Be 1 w 1404
sure 1 w 1408
of 6 w 1410
it 10 w 1412
Philoctetes 5 w 1424
Indeed 1 w 1430
I 9 w 1432
do 6 w 1434
not 4 w 1437
think 1 w 1442
it 11 w 1444
right 2 w 1449
to 17 w 1451
put 1 w 1454
you 22 w 1457
under 1 w 1462
oath 1 w 1466
Neoptolemus 5 w 1478
Rest 1 w 1482
assured 1 w 1489
it 12 w 1492
is 13 w 1494
not 5 w 1497
lawful 2 w 1503
for 11 w 1506
me 21 w 1508
to 19 w 1510
leave 2 w 1515
without 1 w 1522
you 23 w 1525
Philoctetes 6 w 1537
Give 2 w 1541
me 22 w 1543
your 9 w 1547
hand 2 w 1551
in 19 w 1553
pledge 1 w 1559
Neoptolemus 6 w 1571
I 10 w 1572
give 1 w 1576
it 14 w 1578
to 21 w 1581
stay 1 w 1585
Philoctetes 7 w 1597
Now 2 w 1600
take 3 w 1604
me 23 w 1606
there 1 w 1611
over 1 w 1616
there 2 w 1621
Neoptolemus 7 w 1633
Where 2 w 1638
do 7 w 1640
you 25 w 1643
mean 1 w 1647
Philoctetes 8 w 1659
Up 1 w 1661
there 3 w 1666
Neoptolemus 8 w 1678
What 2 w 1682
is 14 w 1684
this 6 w 1688
new 1 w 1691
delirium 1 w 1699
Why 2 w 1703
do 8 w 1705
you 26 w 1708
gaze 1 w 1712
at 14 w 1714
the 13 w 1717
dome 1 w 1721
above 1 w 1726
us 17 w 1728
Philoctetes 9 w 1740
Let 1 w 1743
me 26 w 1745
go 7 w 1747
let 1 w 1751
me 27 w 1753
go 8 w 1755
Neoptolemus 9 w 1767
Where 3 w 1772
will 2 w 1776
you 27 w 1779
go 9 w 1781
if 1 w 1784
I 11 w 1785
do 10 w 1787
so 5 w 1789
Philoctetes 10 w 1801
Let 2 w 1804
me 28 w 1806
go 10 w 1808
I 12 w 1810
say 3 w 1813
Neoptolemus 10 w 1825
I 13 w 1826
will 3 w 1830
not 6 w 1833
Philoctetes 11 w 1845
You 1 w 1848
will 4 w 1852
kill 1 w 1856
me 29 w 1858
if 2 w 1861
you 28 w 1864
touch 1 w 1869
me 30 w 1871
further 1 w 1878
Neoptolemus 11 w 1890
There 2 w 1895
then 2 w 1900
I 14 w 1902
release 1 w 1909
you 29 w 1912
if 3 w 1915
in 20 w 1917
fact 1 w 1921
you 30 w 1924
believe 1 w 1931
it 15 w 1933
is 16 w 1935
for 12 w 1938
the 16 w 1941
better 1 w 1947
